This beautiful rehearsal dinner, designed by Beth Helmstetter, took place in the Wine Cellar at Westlake Village Inn in Southern California. Beth kept the decor simple playing off the natural beauty of the room using tons of candles to give the room a beautifully soft glow. Florals in shades of blush pink and ivory from Holly Flora added to the the look, and rattan chargers and a simple champagne linen completed the room. The cellar had enclaves that opened onto the lake where Beth left seating for guests to enjoy the view.

The printed materials included custom invitations, individual place cards with various icons representing the dinner entree options, and a hand painted menu board to be displayed on the stone mantle in the cellar.

The groom’s family even shipped in pralines in the shape of Texas (his home state) as a favor for each guest! All of the out-of-towners also received a tote bag featuring a custom map created for the couple’s wedding invitation suite.

I know, right!!! And lucky for us, Julie is starting a new little adventure…documenting real brides and the process of planning a wedding. In little, fun to watch minis that we’ll all be able to enjoy. Can’t wait to see what she comes up with (more info below).

From Julie Hill at Elysium…I’ve always been in awe of the brides whose weddings we film.  They each have a unique vision of how they want their wedding to look and how they want their guests to feel.  I thought it would be so fun to document the REAL process of planning a wedding.  What inspires the bride?  What challenges do they have along the way?  How did they pick their dress, venue, and vendors?  For Libby & Patrick’s wedding, I wasn’t able to film the entire planning process since they live in Nashville and I am in S. Cal but I was able to film the building of all the floral decor the day before as well as all the setup on the wedding day.  Can I just say that I had massive respect for wedding coordinators and designers before I did this, but after?  Let’s just say that they are priceless!!

I am excited to document future couples as they go through the process.  Brides often tell me that they are so inspired by Style Me Pretty (among other things) yet get somewhat stuck at times on how to make their concept a reality.  This series will document the realities, the pitfalls, and the satisfaction and enjoyment of making their wedding dreams come true!  I’m also hoping to document more DIY projects that brides take on that can not only make their wedding more personal & unique, but also a budget saver.

Libby & Patrick’s wedding was an eye opener and so much fun to film behind the scenes.  It turned out so beautifully due to Libby’s great taste and awesome vendors she had on board.  I hope you enjoy this little film of their wedding behind the scenes!Oh and If you are newly engaged and planning a unique wedding based on what you see here on this amazing blog and would be interested in having your wedding planning documented from start to finish, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

This next little bit of goodness is from Justin and Mary Marantz, who I owe HUGE for the gorgeousness that they delivered from Libby and Patrick’s wedding. Their photographs speak volumes as to just how talented they are and yet snapping these pics wasn’t even remotely all they did…they carried flowers inside and outside so that they could shoot them in the perfect light. They helped us clean up after two huge centerpieces crashed and spilled water all over the head table an hour before guests were set to arrive. They draped tables, tied ribbons and did a million other little things to ensure that we would be able to document the details to perfection. To say they were amazing is putting it so lightly, it’s almost a crime.

Justin & I are all about amazing details. So when we were asked to shoot a wedding designed by the joint powerhouse of talent that is Sarah True and the SMP crew, trust me we were all over it! For us, we believe that there are two things that separate a stand out wedding from your basic paint by numbers formula: raw emotion and killer details. The first we can’t really help you with (you either have it or you don’t!, but when it comes to the details just a little bit of extra effort can make a huge difference. So we put together our top five tips for all you brides to keep in mind when thinking about what details you’d like to include.

1) It doesn’t have to take a huge budget to have amazing details. What I loved the most about this wedding was that so much of it was do it yourself. I think a lot of brides out there get discouraged if money is tight that they won’t be able to have the beautiful wedding that they want. But in reality, there are a ton of details you can put together with just a little bit of money and good old fashioned creativity. Two of my absolute favorite details were the “keep warm” blankets at the lounge areas. Abby & Sarah could have just put out some stacks of blankets for the guests (or not done anything at all), but just that little bit extra effort (plus some ribbon & a cute tag!) really took this wedding to a whole other level. I really believe that it’s those little unexpected touches, like the blankets and those fantastic sparkly pillows, that make your guests feel like they are a part of something special.

2) Pick things that are so YOU as a couple. The whole point of the details is to make your guests feel like they are being taken care of and for them to get a feel for who you are as a couple, even if they only knew one of you before the wedding day. I loved the small cans of champagne that were passed for the toasts. That was something that Libby & Patrick loved, and I think when you share the things you love with your guests it counts for so much more than just your basic cookie cutter details.

3) Presentation is everything! Don’t just think of the details individually (i.e. one place card), think also of how you can display them as a collective to create a wow factor. As photographers, we love to shoot things in rows or in groups of things as part of their environment. So we absolutely fell in love with the flower display on the head table! Separately, each of the peony centerpieces were really pretty & simple, but when pieced together as a collective all of us were blown away with how it turned out.

4) Set up the timeline with your photographer so they have time to get in to shoot the details before the guests get there. We used to have it all the time, where the schedule of the day had us shooting the bridal party 45 minutes away from where the reception was going on. By the time we got there, cocktail hour was nearly over and the details (signature drinks, escort table, custom drink stirrers) were all but gone. Trust me I know from experience, you work so hard thinking up these details and putting them together and come the wedding day you might not even get to see them. So now we work with all of our couples to make sure we have time to get in there and capture everything for them.

5) Don’t be afraid to do something unexpected. I feel like a lot of brides really struggle with what they think they are *supposed* to do and what they really want to do. But often it can be exactly those unusual details, like the silhouette chandeliers and the zebra striped rugs, that make a wedding stand out from all the other weddings the guest have been to. Don’t be afraid to stamp your day with your own style.

From Sarah True of True Event, who I respect and adore on an entirely new level after this wedding. She is the most level headed, totally design savvy, can-do anything designer I’ve ever met…literally climbing on tables to hang votives and bussing tables during the reception. Not to mention her insanely gorgeous styling. Yep, she’s officially THE BEST…

The reception was a cocktail party with passed hors d’oeuvres and food stations and one of the most unique venues I have had the opportunity to work at.  I thought it was important to create spaces on the rooftop, where we would shift the energy of the party through the design and detail.  By the majority of the seating and tables we used soft, feminine details, lots of blush tones, hanging pearlescent votives, ruffly chair covers and candelight to create a very romantic backdrop for guests to enjoy.  As the space shifted, around the dance floor we created lounge vignettes that brought in the modern lines in the furniture, bold pops of color, hot pink tones, and black and white zebra pattern carpets that added a wild, exotic detail and fun energy as the band rocked into the night.

From Chase Rivers of Flair, our FABULOUS Nashville based floral guru and generally really awesome dude…seriously someone should give this guy his own show, he’s that good, that creative, that charming.

While we were setting up, I could literally feel the tension and the energy of the day. It was awesome knowing that all of that hard work was slowly transforming itself into the most beautiful wedding ever. And everything was fantastic. Libby was blown away and her guests were too.  I got a call from one of the relatives (older lady) praising us for the work we did.  Everything was so clean and crisp with big splashes of vibrant color.  The chair covers really complemented the flowers with their softness and femininity.

Okay, now I want to walk you through the space and tell you about all of the amazing little details that we infused into the day to make this wedding really special.

Invitations by Laura Hooper…It’s a well known fact that Laura Hooper is a calligraphy and invitation genius, so when she agreed to do Libby’s save the dates and wedding invitations, I almost died. Laura used her chandelier design which literally set the stage for the ENTIRE wedding style. The pale pink icon, letterpressed into the most beautiful paper with Laura’s signature calligraphy text. It was beyond gorgeous.

Rentals by Classic Party Rentals…ALL of our rentals, from the leather ottomans to the reflection tables, from the serving stations to the pretty linens, were by Classic Party Rentals. I seriously cannot say enough about Mark and Allison, the dynamic duo that helped us transform the space. Classic is relatively new to Nashville but from the looks of their inventory and their incredible customer service, I have officially put myself at the top of the number 1 fan list.

Lounge Spaces…each of the lounge spaces was designed to give guests a place to relax, to sip their Sofia champagne, to dive into the amazing apps that Patrick’s sushi restaurant Zumi provided. But more than that, the rugs by Urban Outfitters and the Pillows from various shops, brought a sense of warmth and intimacy to an otherwise very modern space. The leather ottomans and mirrored tables were all swank, but the decor detailing was relaxed and inviting.

Zumi Sushi + Noodle Bar…one of my FAVORITE parts of the whole wedding was the noodle bar that Patrick’s newest venture, Zumi Sushi, provided. Aside from the insanely tasty shrimp sushi appetizers, the noodle bar was a really fun way to share a little of their personalities with the guests and get everyone in on the fun. Noodles were served in take-out chinese containers with a side of chop stix and I swear, I ate three cartons full. If any of you Nashville brides are looking for a really cool element to your dining experience, Zumi is now catering Weddings!! How’s that for cool.

Head Table…In terms of design, Sarah and I set out to make the head table the real centerpiece of the wedding. Although it looks like we had a TON of flowers, we really didn’t. We simply used 95% of them on the head table so that the design looked completely lush and overflowing with peony goodness. We kept all of the other tables super simple with little votive candles and we reused the flowers from the ceremony in the reception space. It was a really practical, money saving way to approach the floral design. Wildflower Linen let us use those AMAZING chair covers which gave the table such an ethereal, pretty look. We hung LED lights above the table, along with the Urban chandeliers. The table was covered in a super simple white linen though was gussied up with a gray runner, milk glass, modern CB2 vases and little mercury glass candle holders. It was STUNNING.

Cake Flower by Estilo Weddings…We kept our cake design really simple. Designed by Bili Mouchow, we simply added a single ceramic flower that Estilo gifted us and it was perfection. The flower was delicate and mimicked a sugar flower beautifully, but since it was ceramic, it also became a wonderful keepsake for Libby and Patrick. LOVE, love, love. Next time, I’m ordering three and making a little bundle on the cake.

Bags by Melangerie NYC….Since most of Libby’s guests would be coming in from out of town, she wanted to do something special for them as they arrived at the hotel. Enter, the PERFECT To Have and To Hold canvas totes by Melangerie NYC. They were the perfect calligraphic element to go with our style and filled with Nashville inspired treats, they made for the sweetest welcome bag ever.

The Milk Glass…we had TONS of milk glass, the most beautiful milk glass you’ve ever seen, all of which let the perfect flowers really shine. Thank you SO very much to Yumiko of Hana Floral Design for letting us borrow all of this goodness and for providing your always spot on floral expertise when it came to choosing the perfect stems to make Libby’s dream a reality.

Flower Rosettes…We used Posh Paperie’s fabric rosette DIY from a few months ago to add a bit of texture to our basic linens. We didn’t have a budget for nice table coverings, so Sarah’s assistant stitched together a million fabric rosettes in white that we layered onto the cotton linens. It was a white on white effect that looked expensive but cost next to nothing. We also made a few pink rosettes to go on our gray runners.

Favor Cards…In lieu of the flooding, our super cute DIY favors had to be scrapped. Instead, we printed cards letting guests know that a donation to the flood victims had been made in their name. Each card was slipped into a glassine envelope and scattered around the lucite trays in the lounge areas.

Menu Cards…We made a really simple menu card come to life by sending it off to Kinkos and having it printed on transparency paper. Set on the silver chargers, the text looked like it was printed right on the glass. It was an awesome effect for maybe $20.

Keep Warm Blankets…Knowing that it could be crazy windy on a rooftop garden (we’d been warned), we wanted to leave blankets for guests to cuddle up with. We found $3.99 white blankets at IKEA and to add a little bit of charm, we tied a tag that said Keep Warm around them with a simple pink ribbon. Again, very little money (we bought 12 total) but left a great impression.

There were so many little ways that we saved money with this wedding. We created clear focal points that really took your breath away and kept the rest of the space really simple. We dressed only the head table from head to toe with chair covers, tablesettings and the prettiest flowers a girl could ever want. We were conciencious of each and every detail that we brought in and made sure that it would really pop. From the $64 Urban outfitter rugs to the $24 Chandeliers, every little details was thoughtfully purchased not only for the price but for the impact that it would make.

And all in all, it turned out spectacular. MUCH more coming up including some killer tips from Justin and Mary Marantz on how to snap an SMP worthy wedding!

From the bride, Lauren…

The ceremony was my favorite part of the entire day. Dark-colored storm clouds rolled in a few hours before that looked quite ominous for rain (August in New Mexico is known for afternoon showers). We certainly lucked out though because the storm never made its way to the Encantado, yet the clouds created an awesome backdrop for spectacular photos.

Luckily for all us, the jaw dropping doesn’t stop with the ceremony. Lauren was inspired by Georgia O’Keeffe’s painting, “White Trumpet Flower”, so she hired Santa Fe floral designer, Andrea Soorikian, to turn her vision into reality and create an evening that was as expressive as the painting itself.

From Lauren…

Overall I wanted the look to be very natural and organic: grasses, succulents, driftwood, pods, etc, with tonal cream blooms, complemented by tons of candlelight. I wanted the floral arrangements to each be unique, so we had a mix of tables with varied vessels to adorn each. The round tables had rectangular wood vases or bamboo bowls, while the long tables had an arrangement of driftwood, white blooms and greens running down the length of each table. I had my heart set on creating a “tree” for the place card table, which I found out is no easy task. Thankfully Andrea did not shy away from the challenge and went above and beyond to create the most gorgeous orchid tree I could have ever imagined!

Hand calligraphy is a big part of my business and I recently had the pleasure of working with a couple (Janet and Ethan) on the calligraphy for their wedding. After the invitations went out, Ethan asked me to create a design that he could frame and present to Janet on their wedding day. Pictured below is the artwork that I created for them. It is hand calligraphy in multiple colors of gouache on archival cotton paper. The text is a reading from their wedding and features their names and wedding date at the bottom. It was gratifying to work on such a project and inspired me to offer a giveaway to a Style Me Pretty couple to remember their special day. I’m offering a hand calligraphed design using archival inks and paper of a poem or reading from their wedding (maximum of 12 lines of text, maximum overall size 15″ x15″) featuring their names and wedding date.

That’s such a great thing to do … either for your own home or as a gift to one of your loved ones!
