From the Bride… We decided to have our wedding at our favorite restaurant. We looked at a lot of venues, but when it came down to it, we loved the idea of supporting a place we loved in a location that we knew we could return to time and time again. The restaurant overlooked the California coast line, sourced all of their food locally, and set the tone for us visually.

The ceremony was at Scripps Institute, outside overlooking the water (there’s a theme here). We arrived early and took all of our photos beforehand with our incredibly talented photographers, The Image is Found, because we didn’t want to miss a minute of the cocktail hour. I’ll never forget after the ceremony, running down the aisle to our friend playing the piano, jumping in the photographers’ car, and going directly to the restaurant, George’s at the Cove. When we arrived, we walked up the stairs that were dotted with candles, and walked out onto the gorgeous patio, with the band playing and the cocktails ready to be served and the beautiful, colorful flowers interplaying with the bold colors of the space. It was absolutely perfect. After months of planning and emails and phone calls and spreadsheets, it was absolutely perfect.

Shortly afterward, the guests arrived. We drank, we toasted, we ate. Then we transitioned downstairs to the dining room, which had dimmed lights, endless candles and sculptural orchids cascading down the tables. Nellie Chan was the mastermind and brilliant muse behind our entire event, and she orchestrated incredible moments for our guests, from the florals to the flow of the space to the timing of events. (She is incredible. We are kind of obsessed with her.) After guests sat down, the dinner of all dinners began: 6 courses, all chosen the week-of by chef Trey Foshee, and sourced primarily by Chino Farms. It was exactly what we had always imagined, a dinner party of friends celebrating great food and wine together. It was intimate, it was warm, and it was delicious.

I’m a designer, so I loved creating some of the smaller moments throughout the day: from the laser cut wooden elements that hung from Nellie’s jaw-dropping florals at the ceremony, to lyrics from Brenden and my song intertwined into the dinner floral pieces. We worked with the one and only Rohner Letterpress in Chicago for the invitations, made welcome books by hand for all the guests, printed and folded ceremony programs, and even hand-cut all of the liners for the save the dates. For me, the wedding story began with the Save the Date, and unfolded over time through each printed element guests received. Telling that story was truly a labor of love, and, of course, incredibly rewarding.

The night ended with Jukebox, an incredibly fun and talented band, rocking out to songs until the wee hours. I changed into a shorter dress, Chef Foshee sent out platters of tacos and bite-sized desserts and everyone was dancing. The night was so perfect that we decided not to do a sendoff, and instead were the last ones to leave. It was perfect.

From the Bride… I feel like I’ve been to the moon and back. After a cumbersome few months of trying to coordinate a small wedding at home, we decided to elope on the intimate Harbour Island – a very small Out Island in the Bahamas, complete with all the rustic charm frequently found with small island living. We stayed in the Cricket Pavilion on Hibiscus Hill…. designed & owned by India Hicks, the Pavilion was perfection. Just steps from a beach of pink sand and an ocean of turquoise with gentle breezes – it was bliss at every turn. Even an evening of heavy tropical rain was enjoyed on the porch, by candlelight, with a glass of wine and a little David Gray.

We married in a little pink church on Dunmore Street – the oldest church in all of the Bahamas – it was beyond words – beyond all expectations on every level. My husband amazed me and I am forever grateful for what we experienced. After a very intimate ceremony, he surprised me with an over-the-top dinner for two, back at the Pavilion. Unbeknownst to me, in the previous weeks, Kevin had been working with a small team to bring this evening to fruition. A two-piece Bahamian band heralded our arrival. The stairs were flanked with floating candles and covered with white rose petals and hundreds of white blooms and candles covered the porch and interior. I was beyond amazed and surprised – and many tears followed. Not one detail was missed – a British-trained private chef, a table draped in linen, printed menu cards and name cards, a first dance, and our private band played as we dined by candlelight on the porch. Just us. I would not have wanted it any other way… those moments were ours, and ours alone and I wouldn’t trade any of them for a windfall.

Making the decision to elope was bittersweet – saying our goodbyes to family friends the week prior to our departure was emotional, and the final call to my mother from the airport really tugged on my heartstrings. But ultimately, I feel that preparing for our marriage privately, and experiencing it exclusively, created an indescribable bond of conquering this milestone together. We truly had the best of both worlds – our elopement and then upon our return, we hosted a small dinner party which was another evening of magic all on its own. We were blessed with the company of those closest to us, a dozen or so toasts, and an evening of many smiles and happy tears.

The Super 8 film, in hindsight, was one of the best decisions… it told “our story” in such a unique way and we will cherish it always. And I cannot say enough kind words about Patrick Moyer and his wife Rachel. They were a true asset to our elopement and were just as much as a support system as they were our photographers. Pat & Rach arrived on Harbour Island as our photographers and left as friends. I have thought of them often since our return and wish they weren’t on the opposite coast!

Being in the industry myself, I did have a leg-up on the planning process but it doesn’t mean that it didn’t come without its stresses – we were planning this excursion with very little lead time. For what it is worth, I do have some advice for brides that are in the throes of the planning process:

Choose a celebration which really represents you as a couple – whether that means eloping our hosting 500 guests, it will make your experience more “real” for both of you.

Select wedding professionals whose work you not only love, but who you really enjoy as people – it will make all of your interactions so much easier, ESPECIALLY your photographer as they’re with you every step of the way the day of your wedding. Also select wedding professionals that you trust so that you can simply let them do their job, there is much value in “letting go” – your “team” will appreciate it and you will be relieved of much stress.

Discuss your priorities & make them your “big ticket items” – you can be really creative with the rest to stay within your budget.

Take any “road bumps” in stride & don’t take your eye off the ball – as much as everybody loves a fabulous party, the bottom line is that it’s about your union, not the “stuff” on the periphery.

Slow yourself down through the planning process and especially the day of your wedding – this event happens once and it’s gone in a blink – embrace every fleeting moment!

From the Bride who also happens to be a FABULOUS wedding photographer… As veteran wedding photographers, Tommy and I had a unique perspective when it came to planning our own day. We had some big advantages, in that we already had established relationships with many of the best vendors in our area – so, we had a good idea of who we wanted to work with, and pretty much had our pick. We also had some pretty strong ideas of what kind of wedding we wanted to have. While my parents would have loved for us to have a big ballroom wedding with a band, we really wanted our wedding to feel more like a night out at an incredible restaurant. We opted to forgo a DJ, and instead amassed a collection of handheld vintage radios. A radio transmitter allowed us to pump an ipod playlist through them, and it was the perfect backdrop for the evening.

Since our wedding was basically a dinner party, the food was really important to us. We explored the idea of a strolling supper, but decided that since we weren’t doing a dance party, a seated, multi-course dinner would lend a bit more structure to the evening, and be a real treat for our guests. We interviewed several caterers before deciding to go with Forte Belanger – we wanted to work with a team that could WOW us with an innovative menu, accommodate some vegan friends, and source ingredients sustainably. They did just that. People are STILL talking about the amazing food at our wedding.

As soon as we found the Frank Lloyd Wright Palmer House, we knew it was the perfect location. It’s Ann Arbor’s only Frank Lloyd Wright home, and is beautifully maintained. It’s only recently been made available as a rental property, and we were actually the first (and possibly only) wedding to be held there. The property did present some interesting challenges in terms of staging an event – and we took a BIG gamble planning everything outdoors – but we were so lucky to have perfect weather, so it all worked out.

I knew from the begining that I wanted a short, 50′s-style dress, and I kept on coming back to dolly couture. I was incredibly nervous about ordering a dress sight-unseen online, but I just couldn’t find anything local that compared. So, I sent along my measurements, and 6 weeks later the dress arrived – and fit perfect right out of the box.

Limiting our guest list to just 60 of our closest friends and family really allowed us to splurge on the things that were important to us. We hired an incredible team of vendors that we trusted implicitly, and really let them do their thing. We had a gorgeous invitation suite designed by local letterpress artist Michelle Baker of Elevated Press. We gave Michelle a lot of creative leeway with our design and she totally NAILED it – the invite actually references the layout of the Palmer House with it’s geometric lines, and we were able to incorporate that triangle theme through much of our design. We had a local beekeeper friend harvest the cutest little jars of honey for our wedding favors. This also lent itself to a really cool display that added some visual interest. The amazing Liz from Parsonage Flowers was so much more than just our florist – she pretty much styled the entire wedding. During our initial meetings, I showed her some tearsheets of elements that appealed to me. Tom and I wanted to incorporate a midcentury/vintage feel, but without it becoming a parody of itself. I knew I wanted yellow to be prominent, and that I loved succulents and ranunculus. But beyond that, I was clueless about HOW to actually stage a beautiful wedding. And with the months leading up to our wedding being, well, wedding season – we were so crazy-busy that we really needed someone to go the extra mile in helping pull the design together. Liz was such a rockstar – sending me mockups of so many incredible ideas, sourcing the coolest vintage furniture pieces from god-knows-where, hunting for the perfect fabrics, sewing things together – just about every beautiful detail you see is thanks to her.

Of course, as photographers ourselves, choosing a photographer was a little tricky. We are so lucky to call some of the best photographers in the country friends – but in the end, we could only hire one. There is so much local talent right in southeast Michigan that almost immediately we ruled out flying someone in. Than it was just a matter of narrowing the field. We wanted to make sure we hired someone who really excelled at shooting the kind of wedding we were having – outdoors, lots of natural light. We wanted very organic imagery and knew we were less interested in posed photos. And of course, we wanted someone who was actually excited about the prospect of working with us (shooting for photographers can be tough!!). We’re so glad we went with Heather, who is not only a amazing photographer, but such a fun person to be around as well.

While our ceremony was fairly secular, it was important to me that we incorporate some Jewish traditions. Liz fashioned a beautiful ‘chuppah’ out of clustered paper lanterns. We created our own spin on the ketubah – asking our close friend to create a piece of art for us that we signed just prior to the ceremony. Tommy also broke the glass. The ceremony was officiated by our friend’s father, and featured a reading from Tom Robbins’ ‘Still Life with Woodpecker’. I walked up the aisle to Iron and Wine’s ‘Love and Some Verses’ played acoustically by a friend.

I loved every minute of being a bride! (Well, except for all the stress of planning – but, honestly, that all faded away the minute my wedding day began.) I will always remember standing with Tom during the ceremony, looking around at how amazing everything was, and bursting into the happiest tears (yep, I blubbered at my wedding!). After years in the wedding industry, it was such a treat to be on the other side of the wedding experience. And it’s so true what everyone says – it goes by in a blur (so make sure you hire a great photographer!!).

“Gillian and Nate love to ski and have spent many vacations together doing so. However they live and work in Boston and their wedding was to be held in the city, on the water, at the Boston Harbor Hotel. We wanted to create an elegant, city chic wedding combined with traditional New England winter details …

photography by adeline & grace weddings

Because they met while on the slopes in college, weaving in this detail was super important to them without making it feel too much like a wedding at a ski lodge. So we carefully immersed subtle design elements throughout the wedding. The invitations were custom designed by Lucky Luxe, where we used a vintage pattern of snowflakes in the envelope liner, the escort cards, which also doubled as a ski ornament favors and hung on an evergreen tree (that they have planted in their yard). The guest book, two vintage wooden skis that guests signed, now hang in their home as a special keepsake. It was the combination of all of these details that made the event truly unique to them.” – Sarah True, Event Planner/Designer

From Gillian ~ “My husband and I met on the alpine ski team at Tufts University and have been together ever since! Skiing is one of the activities we enjoy most in our free time, and we both have many fond memories of skiing with our families and friends. So, when we started planning our wedding last year we wanted to infuse a subtle ski theme, while still keeping the city chic vibe going. We toyed around with hosting the event at a ski resort, but after some thought, decided on our current home of Boston and are very happy we did.

As a busy orthopaedic surgery resident I knew I would need help with the wedding planning process and was so lucky to be connected with Sarah True of True Event. She became my wedding planning angel! Once we settled on the beautiful waterfront venue of the Boston Harbor Hotel, she put together an amazing creative team including Erica of Adeline & Grace for Photography, Erin of Lucky-Luxe Couture Correspondance for a custom letterpress invitation suite, Betsy Dunlap Calligraphy, and Kelly of Beautiful Blooms for a gorgeous display of calla lillies, roses, and orchids. Throughout the process I kept a blog (great idea I got from my now sister-in-law) at Once Upon A Time to look back and remember how it all came to be. Every detail was just perfect!

*Quick Note to Brides from THIS SMP Editor: Keeping a blog throughout your whole pre-wedding experience is almost a no-brainer in this day and age! When will you EVER have so much to say about a subject nearest and dearest to your heart!! And ~ you know, to toot our own horns … it’s SO easy over on SMP’s Style Circle! You can keep it private, or not. You can save your favorite images. Favorite your fellow-brides-in-need-of-help. Join the SMP community of brides who find SMP a warm and friendly place to get feedback on their ideas! But, if you’re the private sort, and just want to keep track of what’s going on in your head … it works for that too!! I do have to say though that sharing your thoughts and ideas with the rest of us wedding visionaries is only perceived as an outstretched hand for faith in all of you designing brides!
On our wedding day in October everyone kept commenting on how calm a bride I was. It was so easy to relax knowing Sarah had it all under control. Our ceremony was beautiful! Having everything at the Boston Harbor Hotel made for easy transitions from the ceremony to the cocktail hour and reception. Guests picked up their mini ski ornaments off our Norway Spruce to find their tables, all named for mountains we had skiied together. And now our “wedding tree” is thriving in our backyard, a daily reminder of our wedding day! There were so many rich details and everything really came together perfectly. As everyone says, the evening goes by so fast, but we both enjoyed every moment. It was incredible!

The boutonnieres and ornaments were inspired by the boutonnieres we found by Fritts Rosenow, but we DIY’d them! I purchased the mini skis online and Nate, Felicity (Nate’s sister), and I put all the ornaments together! Kelly Harris, my florist, crafted the boutonnieres based on the photo I sent her from the Fritts Rosenow site. We’d really like to thank them for their inspiration!

One fun part of pre-wedding photography production is hearing about all the details of the wedding and seeing them all come to life the day of, like a chapter in a book. With Gillian, I heard about family, friends, place settings, flowers, the dress (always my fav) and shoes. After hearing about the wedding and photographing their engagement shoot, I was really looking forward to the day. I couldn’t have been happier for them throughout the whole event! We managed to sneak outside in between some of the rain showers. I have to say, I love a recent rainfall ~ the clouds, the light, and the wet glossy ground. It makes for beautiful images. The day flew by, and just like Gillian and Nate, I loved reliving the images Jenna and I captured on their big day. It is always such a joy to work with a fantastic group of vendors behind the scenes at weddings. Gillian and Nate couldn’t have scored a better team!

Today we’re finishing up our featured wedding from Dave Robbins Photography with a bit of Abby and Matt’s story! But before we get to that, we wanted to elaborate just a bit more on the favors. Abby told us that in the 1800′s, sugar was always sold in blue paper-wrapped cones. For their wedding, Abby and Matt were able to find these sugar cones from a historical reenactment company and used them as place cards as well as favors. They were also Abby’s “something blue.” Betsy Dunlap, calligrapher, wrote names along the side of the cone.

from the beautiful bride, Abby …

It was very important to me that every detail be incredibly personal and well-thought out. Our wedding was the idea of a weekend on Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay. It is an area about two hours outside of Washington, D.C. where I have many fond memories of weekends at my grandparent’s summer house on the beach and later on, at my parents home next door. Summers were spent with all of my cousins and sisters enjoying the water and the traditions of the area.

This area of Virginia, called the Northern Neck, is incredibly historic and I would visit Stratford Hall often, knowing that someday this is where I wanted my wedding to be. How could anyone resist the drama of those steps and having the entire grounds to yourself for your special day? I didn’t even know if they would allow a wedding!

For our invitation suite we worked with the very talented young calligrapher, Betsy Dunlap who wrote out all of our pieces. We then had her handwriting engraved in a glossy black ink on Crane’s pearl white papers. Betsy also addressed all of the invitations and we used affectionate names for friends and family on the inner envelopes. We also did this with Betsy for our menu cards, programs, escort cards, and other materials.

Our ceremony was on the steps of Stratford’s Great House and guests were seated on the Great Lawn. We incorporated my husband’s Jewish background and my Catholic background and had both a priest and rabbi present, combining wedding traditions from both. During the cocktail hour we had cigar rollers from Tennessee who freshly rolled cigars for our guests. Stratford Hall provided our local Virginia-inspired catering menu. Other than the Virginia peanut soup and salad course, the meal was served on large silver platters so that guests might be more engaged with one another and be able to serve one another family style. We served whole striped bass, filet mignon, vegetable gratin, and following our wedding cake, Stratford’s recipe for ginger cookies. We sent down pounds and pounds of our favorite La Colombe coffee.

We found a local band where all of the members are in gospel choirs and come together on the side to play soul music. We had taken dance lessons at the American Ballroom Dance Studio (of Mad Hot Ballroom fame-Pierre Dulaine) and our first dance was to a Stevie Wonder version of Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ in the Wind”. Father and Daughter first dance was to Otis Redding’s “Sitting on the Dock of the Bay’. We intermingled speeches, dances, and cake cutting throughout the dinner courses.

After running through a sparkler farewell lining the gardens paths, our official getaway from the party was in my father’s antique military jeep which he has saved since he was a child growing up in Montana. He drove us to a waiting car and we had a giant sign on the back where Betsy had written out “Just Married”. All of our guests then returned to the Tides Inn by waiting coaches and the wedding party in a vintage trolley.

Gifts to Groomsmen ~ Ralph Lauren black and ivory pocket squares

All of our flowers, including the two hundred pound fresh magnolia wreath at the top of the steps, were from a local florist, Bridget’s Bouquets. We worked with her throughout the year and she understood the vision perfectly on the day. I sent her ivory and hunter green grosgrain ribbon from a source here in New York I knew about from my friend who owns a successful ribbon belt company. We only used magnolia leaves, tons of ivory roses, and boxwood. She built boxwood topiaries adorned with ivory roses for the rectangular tables in the tent. Our cake table was covered in magnolia leaves. Our cake was all ivory buttercream in a basketweave design with ivory roses filling the top and again was a local source in Fredericksburg, Virginia called Paul’s Bakery.

This plantation was the birthplace of Robert E. Lee and the only two signers of the Declaration of Independence who were brothers. There is an elegant history that can be seen in the grounds, the building, and the formal English gardens. We held cocktails and tented a large section of the Cutting Gardens for dinner and dancing. We wanted everything about the wedding day at Stratford to be more of a timeless elegance and to convey an element of the important history, but with our own twist.

Thank you SO much Abby and Matt for sharing your wedding vision and images with us! And a HUGE thanks to Dave Robbins Photography for the fabulous photographs that so elegantly captured the spirit of the day!!

Here are some thoughts from Mina...

Cupcake- I love the simple cupcakes like these ones which are simple to make and affordable. In addition, it is cute to make simple vanilla cupcake and put a little raspberry on top. In addition, you can think about other things like raspberry jam, tarts, and sorbet. Alternatively, with white wine you can put a little raspberry cube for flavor.

The card (setting) – It is easy to make for all you need are a stack of cards and labels. Also, pin it to a wooden white washboard.

Girl in White Dress- So whimsical and beautiful dress. Also I love the rosette around her head

Kissing Tree- I thought this was really whimsical and charming. If there is a big tree, just put a sign on it and it can be a perfect place to that pictures.

Bicycles- Romantic and chic. It is like a scene from a romantic movie. All you need is to tie some flowers onto a bike and add a sign. Absolute perfection

Keep Calm and Carry on- a beautiful simple piece of work. I changed the color so it would match. It can be a neat guest gift. Just put it in a simple white frame and tie a gorgeous bow.

Radishes- I just added this because of the gorgeous color scheme

Calligraphy- Something every wedding could have. It is piece of art. I love it on a raspberry tone paper with white ink.

Carnations Bouquet- Really inexpensive flower but together looks marvelous with a simple white sash. Your bridesmaid can hold possibly a white bouquet of carnations. Other flowers that are wonderful during this time of season and in this shade of colors are anemone, dahlia, spray roses, and roses.

Feather- Really whimsical and I love the French label on it, it looks so fancy. Just add one into a beautiful glass vase with some raspberry carnations and it is a great place setting. Or one under a napkin can be a perfect for people to find their names.

A woman in Pink Dress- It looks so retro yet so modern and classic. I think ruffles are so pretty! I love the simple makeup, white pearl earrings, and classic dress. Pick out some cute shoes to match too. For your bridesmaid, you can allow them to pick a range of tones from raspberry pink to pastel pink.

The maze- I look it because it is so clean cut and sophisticated

The main picture- It may look to trendy however it is quite simple design. I love the simple white/gray dress under the pile of beautiful raspberry rosettes. In addition, I love the balloons, which are inexpensive and can light up a wedding. I really like the big balloons that can be tied each table.

I have to say, I knew from the minute I received Erich and Debra’s save the date, that this wedding was going to be good. They had a vintage Palm Beach postcard replicated with their save the date printed on the back side. It was absolutely adorable…

When the invitations came, I knew instantly that the wedding would be filled with cute personality and fun little touches. They were designed by ephemera press with pale yellow and slate ink letterpressed on pretty white card stock. Check out the wording, it’s the best part…

IF you can’t see the text, it reads:

Debra Ellyn Brodsky and Erich Beeton Shigley / Together with their families / Invite you to share in the celebration of their marriage / As Debra becomes a Red Sox fan and Erich learns to use the dishwasher…(it goes on with the date and time from here)

How cute is that? I always encourage brides to think creatively when it comes to their invitations, but this is the first that I have actually received where they did just that!

If the save the date and the invitations weren’t cute enough, Debra had the fabulous Stephanie of Couture Maps design these adorable maps of the sculpture garden where the ceremony took place.

(Quick Note, there was a typo on the original post. Betsy Dunlap was the calligrapher but Stephanie crafted these maps)

Don’t you just love??? In the words of Rachel Zoe…Bananas!!
