From the Bride-to-be… Joey and I met back in 2007 and became instant friends! About a year later we started to realize our connection was deeper than just friendship and we wanted to be together–we have been ever since. We fell in love on a date in San Francisco and knew that it would be the perfect place for our engagement session. We chose Ashley Batz who also works for The Glitter Guide like I do. She really captured our love and our sense of humor! We can’t wait for our wedding in August of next year at the Ainsley House garden in Campbell, CA!

From Vicky of Vicky Starz Photography… Lara and Dave were together for 12 years before they decided to tie the knot. They opted to forego a traditional wedding as it didn’t suit their wants and needs. The two of them wanted to create a wedding that reflected their relationship and what they love to do together.

After searching for various venues around the city, they fell in love with Boehmer Restaurant which is located in one of Toronto’s hippest neighbourhoods. The decor includes a Brothers Dressler chandelier, a reclaimed wood table, and modern artwork that’s strategically placed around the restaurant. The food is prepared to perfection and the restaurant atmosphere was exactly what they wanted. Lara tried on various wedding gowns at bridal stores around the city, even ordered one online, and returned it because nothing felt right on her. She decided to start trying on other dresses, and instantly fell in love with a blue Brian Bailey dress. She went with a dress that was true to her style and love every bit of it. Lara wanted her invites to reflect her modern vision. Papertalk Press specializes in modern designer wedding invitations and offered Lara exactly what she was looking for. Papertalk Press also designed and printed all the paper goods for the wedding, including the menus and tags.  These beautifully designed and printed paper goods really helped to bring Lara’s vision to life. Their main goal was to celebrate their union with an evening that represented them. They wouldn’t change a thing!

From the Bride…The day was incredible. The beginning felt a little chaotic, getting to the venue, getting the ball rolling with setup and decorations, etc. Thankfully we had a super creative group of friends and two amazing wedding coordinators to help us with all the tasks. I knew everything was in the best hands. The ceremony and reception went really smooth. It was perfect. Simple and intimate, just what we wanted. I could relive that day over and over again. 

DIY/ handmade was a major theme for us. The venue included nothing, so we were able make everything just the way we wanted. It did add a significant amount of stress because there were so many things to plan out but looking back I wouldn’t have done it any other way. Our wedding was so “us!” We designed our own save the dates and invitations. All the flowers arrangements including the bride and maid-of-honor bouquets were made by friends and family. We had a DIY photobooth that was a big hit with the crowd. The napkin rings were all hand rolled and scripted by my mom and I. Menu boards and ceremony signs were all hand painted as well. I also think the cross stitched table cloths and quilts really brought together the handmade theme. My favorite DIY project was the cake topper. I made it myself from felt, dried flowers and other objects I had in my craft box. It was inspired by a Hayao Miyazaki film. He is quite an inspiration to both of us as artists and I couldn’t think of anything better to represent us as a couple. 

Planning and designing the wedding was a bitter sweet adventure. I LOVED the designing part but the actual planning way scary and just plain frustrating at times. We decided to hire I Do Venues as our “day-of” coordinator and it was the best money spent by far. Gloria and her team kept us focused and on task through the whole process. They thought of everything! We couldn’t have done it without them. I highly recommend to any future bride to hire a coordinator. Worth every penny for the peace of mind. 

Every decor element was hand picked by Josh and I. We scoured antique shops, flea markets and Etsy to find our perfect pieces. The best part is that we will be able to use all our wedding stuff around our apartment! Great way to remind us of that special day! 

I think I am most proud of our budget friendly flower arrangements. We went to a local farmers market as per a friends recommendation and were able to pick up 8 summer bouquets the morning of the wedding. The bouquets were enough to fill 6 large centerpiece jars and multiple other vases. They were freshly cut and gorgeous. We had some close friends do the arrangements at the venue. Total cost: 60 dollars and some big thank you hugs! Check your local farmers markets a couple weeks before your wedding. You can often preorder the flowers you want and it saves you a bundle!!

Josh and his family are from Puerto Rico so we had some little hidden culture jems in there. The obvious was the salsa dancing. Really, how could you miss all the hip action! We also had a cigar bar which the boys really enjoyed. We had our caterer to do a plantain appetizer and our wedding cake was also tropics inspired. It had layers of passion fruit and mangos inside. Yum!!

From the Bride…We drew inspiration for the wedding from everything we loved! Whether it was silly things like grassy fields, comfort, natural beauty, anything French, even our friends and family inspired us. My husband called our wedding “classic French hippie” which is probably a more accurate description. We knew when we liked things and what we were going for – a meaningful, personal ceremony and the most fun BBQ/dance party you’ve ever been to. 

The location really set the tone. When we first started planning, the number one thing on my “top 5″ list was…getting married in a field. Fields are not as easy to come by in San Diego as you’d like to think. So when my dad called me to ask what our wedding plans were and out of nowhere mentions that he thought his good friend, Richard, would maybe let us do it as his ranch in Bonsall if we wanted, I flipped. I spent many family BBQ’s there fishing for crawdads in their family’s creek and climbing up trees. One visit with Chadwick sealed the deal. I mean, he has an adult treehouse there and not just one field…but two! 

To give the wedding that personal feel, save money, and make our vision reality, we did take on a ton of DIY projects. I’m a 5th grader teacher and we had just over three months to plan the wedding so that we could get married while on summer break. Now, I know that I never usually read these things and just looked at the pictures but I feel this might give some of you hope – I am NOT a creative person at all and yet somehow managed to pull all this off. My husband, Chadwick, is the most innovative and artistic person I know (fitting, since he’s a graphic designer and photographer for Invisible Children). He came up with many of the design elements and branding for our wedding. From hand-drawing our invitations and then screen-printing them one by one. Or creating a logo we used as a stamp for envelopes, drink tags, and whatever else we felt like stamping. I figured out how to sew for the wedding and made all the pennant banners, our ring bag, collected little knick-knacks from garage sales, bargain hunted the remnants at fabric shops, and made the “yay!” flags/programs. It was 100% a team effort. Not just between Chadwick and I, but with at least half of the people at our wedding! Everyone helped out. Friends brewed beer for the occasion or brought local kegs, bridesmaids hand-painted signs, brewed iced tea, and spent the whole day setting up rentals, my mom and grandma personally made all the 300-400 appetizers for our “Happy Hour”, Chad’s grandma handmade all the guys’ ties, his mom made all the heart pillows for decor, groomsmen invented cocktails and bartended, friends let us borrow things from their own weddings including 150 sets of mismatched china and silver, my dad put together the doors for our entrance and found the wood backdrop. The list goes on and on. We even bartered with our best friends to have them DJ, film, and coordinate the day of. Everyone helped! We were so blessed and the day would not have come together without all of them.

Our favorite details were probably the meaningful ones. We didn’t want to just do things without having a clear purpose. We had our food catered by TK Burger which is Chad’s favorite place from his hometown and where we had one of our first dates (and it’s incredibly tasty/affordable which helped. If you’re ever in Newport, get a shiitake burger there, it’ll change your life). We had ice cream sandwiches for dessert instead of cake as I am obsessed with ice cream. We had my little brothers pass the rings through the aisles as part of the ceremony to signify that everyone there would have a “hand” in our marriage. We gave everyone in our wedding party disposable cameras to use throughout the ceremony and night as Chadwick and I both love the challenge of capturing an event with only 27 exposures. My big surprise (one of the few I’ve ever been able to keep a surprise) was I knew Chad had really wanted me to pull up to the ceremony in a classic car, but it just wasn’t in the budget and we had had a hard time finding one for free (go figure). Richard, who owns the ranch, happens to have a beautiful old convertible that I discovered on one of my trips up to plan. It was even used in my own parents’ wedding! He sneakily helped me work out all the details so Chad didn’t know until I pulled up.

As far as advice goes, I’m not sure I’m a pro but have fun! It’s your wedding! This is the one time everyone you love gets to be together and celebrate you two. Don’t worry about perfection. Pick the things that are most important to the two of you and go from there. People won’t care if you forgot to order sparklers or if you ended up having to forgo the personalized name tags. Really, not one person came up and told me they wished we had had a sparkler for them to wave at the end of the night. It works out. Oh, and let people help. I thought I would try and take on everything but quickly learned that was going to make for a rough few months. Enjoy your engagement. Let other people be a part of it all. Hire a wedding coordinator for the day of stuff if you can or even a friend (or if you luck out like us, you have a friend who IS a wedding planner and helps you with all of that – thanks Julie!). I guess you should just understand that you may come to a point where some things never got done or made or finished and you just let it go. You get to marry your best friend at the end of it. All of the other stuff is just extra.

From Lisa Teso Photography…Two creative girls and one problem – Finding a special way to change their last names.

A few months ago, Jennifer Mele, co-owner of Hi, Friend Design in Portland, Ore. found herself in a pickle  - following her wedding in 2009 she still hadn’t found the time to change her name. That night a plot was hatched with a fellow co-worker who was also facing the same predicament. Looking for a meaningful way to officially change their last names and also a reason to throw a fabulous party, the two decided to surprise their husbands with a fun summer ceremony. With the help of friends, family and local event vendors, the Maiden Voyage was born and two unsuspecting husbands had the surprise of the summer as their wives finally took the plunge at a summer backyard ceremony.

A few details to help you follow along…When the husbands returned home from golfing they were met with glasses of their favorite whiskey and outfits for the night ahead. The nautical theme (Maiden Voyage, get it?!) could be seen throughout the event – from the music, to the ceremony, to the yellow/blue color motif. Small detailed touches were everywhere including: Customized wine labels on the wine bottles and mini bottles of champagne, cupcakes baked by Jennifer herself in husbands’ two favorite flavors, black and white photos of the two couples from their wedding days, a photo booth with nautical themed props, Enlarged copies of their new licenses for guests to sign with their well-wishes, the officiant was the same gentleman that married Jennifer to her husband Steve in 2009 – he focused on the meaning of a name and the importance of taking on someone else’s name for your life. One of the highlights of the ceremony was the girls grabbing iPads from their “maids of honor” and officially changing their names on Facebook.

From Gucio Photography…When Gucio Photography and Revel Events got together to set up this rustic, autumnal photo shoot, it was a classic Vancouver day—grey skies, wind, and rain—but we kept cozy indoors at the lovely Ironworks Studios in Gastown. A refurbished warehouse from the 1880s, the Ironworks provided the ideal inspiration. With its weathered, bottle-green paint on the original wood plank floor, its fir beams, brick walls, skylights, and antique metal accents, no venue could have more aptly embodied our theme of rustic Canadiana. We were inspired by natural textures and colors, and wanted to incorporate as many raw materials as possible into our shoot; in particular, we aimed to feature objects and images reminiscent of the West coast of Canada. Wood, moss, pine cones—and yes, even antlers—helped set the scene and enhance this cool color scheme.

Graphic designer Leah Browne created all of the stationery, including escort cards, table numbers, menus, favor tags, and dessert flags. She used textured kraft paper to compliment the rustic theme, and her design incorporated images of animals indigenous to this beautiful corner of the earth. Inspired by Leah’s design, we glued twigs to the escort cards and used a bed of moss in a wooden tray to anchor this 3-D twist on a seating chart. Instead of seating your guests at table 1 or 2, why not invite them to take a seat at Salmon, Deer, or Bear?

We were so excited to find this antique solid wood dinner table with its scalloped edges and intricate scrollwork. The table has so much character that it would have been a shame to cover it up; instead, we chose to accent the dark wood with a mottled grey bamboo table runner. Clusters of candles in various heights lined the runner and lent a warm glow to the table, highlighting the true showpiece: the fabulous terrarium centerpieces! Nghia Diep at Blumen Floral Boutique crafted these gorgeous succulent creations inside a trio of apothecary jars. The place settings were accented with guest favors of white porcelain acorn ornaments that also served as the place card holders. Fruitwood chiavari chairs added a delicate complement to the heavy solidity of the table.

Of course, no table would be complete without a delicious meal! We brought award-winning food blogger Emily Wight (Well Fed, Flat Broke) on board to create a West Coast menu to feature in the photo shoot. Her menu incorporated the best meats, cheeses, and fresh produce that the Okanagan and Fraser Valley have to offer. The fabulous Vancouver home décor and accessories store, Walrus, provided us with wood serving trays to showcase Emily’s culinary delights.

To cap off the meal, we created a tiny cake-built-for-two, plus a buffet of other Canadian-inspired confections: maple cupcakes, Nanaimo bars, beaver tails, and berries. For those DIY-ers out there, our vintage-inspired green dessert table was a $15 Salvation Army find. We sanded off the unattractive shellac, painted the table this cheerful shade of green, and then sanded the edges and corners to give it that weathered look. It was a fun, budget-friendly way to add a pop of color and character to the décor.

Our stunning model, Kimberly, allowed us to play dress-up with her all day. She spent the morning having her hair styled by Lauren McFadden, and her makeup done by Emily Cheng. Aiming for casual elegance, we steered clear of the typical wedding gown, opting for a trio of short dresses. Each one evoked a different mood: the first, a playful party dress that we commissioned local designer Carina Gonzalez of Philosophy Pink to create; the second, a pure white, flowing linen and lace frock from H&M; and the third, an elegant, flirty, halter dress in a pinkish hue from Club Monaco.

Blumen’s garden-inspired bridal bouquet was a feast for the senses—it looked beautiful, smelled incredible, and featured so many textures and shades of white, grey, and green that it was truly a work of art. The boutonnieres were delicate, yet masculine, and tied in beautifully with the floral accents in the terrarium centerpieces.

Of all the bridal accessories we used in the photo shoot, none was more meaningful than the most enduring of wedding symbols: the ring. The magnificent pearl solitaire gracing Kimberly’s hand was handmade by local jewelry designer Rex Lavado (Broken English) as a gift for his wife, who graciously allowed us to borrow it for the day. Every gal in the room was envious!

After being able to travel extensively over the years, I slowly began to realize my hometown Charlotte is very unique. It still has the appeal of Southern charm, but with a lot of the perks of a bigger city, including great venues for weddings.  My husband and I knew we wanted an outdoor wedding, and after browsing online for possibilities, Daniel Stowe Botanical Garden seemed like the perfect place. As soon as we saw it in person, we knew that this was the venue for us. The White Garden was large enough for all of our guests, but the fact it was enclosed gave the space a very intimate air.

Most of the inspiration came from the venue itself. Being designers, my mother and I found great joy throughout the planning process, setting out to create that perfect balance of décor- giving a subtle nod to times past, without over-doing it and forcing a theme. Images of 19th century English conservatories, vintage botanical illustrations, and apothecary label typographies constantly drove our decisions.

For the ceremony, we used mainly white hydrangeas and lilies. The whole garden was white and green- and we introduced color through the bridesmaids’ dresses, the men’s suits, and the bouquets. When it came to wedding gowns, I was originally interested in Jenny Packham’s signature sheath dresses, reminiscent of bygone eras with her intricate beading. After trying some on, I felt they were more fit for the red carpet than the aisle. My mother-in-law suggested I try on Jenny Packham’s Minerva gown, which had layer upon layer of ivory silk tulle- so light and comfortable! It was perfect for the garden, and I finally felt like a bride.

For the centerpieces we bought large apothecary glass jars and planted silk lady slipper and cymbidium orchids with moss. We chose a navy blue satin for the table linens, and placed the jars on a moss mats in the center of each table. We ordered Jaguar Pink Mokara Orchids from Thailand, and floated each stem in glass cylinders to add some color to the centerpieces. We also decided to give our guests a taste of the South with spiked Arnold Palmers for cocktail hour, and Deep Fried Peanuts for favors.

My favorite part of the planning process though, was collaborating with my husband to design our invitations and programs. We looked to old pharmacy and apothecary labels for guidance, and a friend letterpressed them with his old Vandercook Press.

It is so satisfying to look back and consider how each detail combined to perfectly reflect our desires for this special day. I only wish it could have lasted longer!

For anyone that reads Style Me Pretty you know that we are a group of girls who love us some seriously gorgeous details. We’ve been talking a lot about details lately here, as it’s the details that give us the wedding giddies, that have us gushing while we drink our morning coffee. But that’s not why we love weddings. And we don’t ever want to allow those details to overshadow that reason. A wedding, in it’s most beautiful state, is about the love. Pure and simple. It’s the moment that he lays eyes on her, the minute those vows are read, the first kiss, the first dance. It’s the love that will always be the reason that we get up in the morning and the reason we fall head over heels for every affair that goes up on SMP. So when we read how this particular bride married the pretty with the passion, well…we became very happy bloggers.

From the Bride…I had way too many favorite moments on our day! However, if I HAD to pick one favorite moment, it would have to be the wedding ceremony. The feeling of walking towards your husband-to-be, in front of all your loved ones, is indescribable. The beautiful flowers, the carefully selected music played by our trio, the perfect summer day, the words spoken by our pastor, the way my veil flowed in the wind, all played big roles in making our ceremony perfect. Along with the perfect details, the ceremony was intimate and personal, which made it that much more memorable.

My advice to brides sounds cliche, but remember to soak up every second of your wedding day. It will be a blur. Our coordinator basically had us promise her that we’ll stop and take a few seconds before walking back down the aisle as husband and wife. I’m so glad we did that, because we were able to take a mental picture of everything before the crazy start to an unforgettable night. Remember to breath and let go if there are any mishaps during your wedding day. Don’t waste your time worrying/stressing out. Rather, use that energy/time to be with your family and friends. Always focus on the positive and be happy, because you’ll never get that moment back.
