From Ang Weddings and Events…Fortune Favors the Brave’s jewelry collection is inspired by a rugged Americana and Western sensibility mixed with a touch of 1970s-era glamour.  The jewelry represents a bold and modern reinterpretation of these classic themes, amped up with contemporary proportions for a wearable take on storied, ethereal metalworking techniques.  We found this modern tribute to the southwest as the inspiration for our bridal shoot.  We came across Agave Restaurant in NYC’s West Village- smooth adobe walls, cow skulls, with a bar beneath a wooden beam ceiling – and knew we had found the perfect urban southwestern venue.

In celebration of same-sex marriage becoming legal in the state of New York this year, we decided to use a bride and a bride for our shoot.  Abbey (an artist) and Perkins (a writer) are a real couple, which is so evident in the chemistry they had on camera.  Fortune Favors the Brave provided the jewelry and styled the two brides. Perkins wore an Equipment blouse, vintage blazer and skinny pants from Isabel Marant. Gabriella New York Bridal Salon provided two dresses for Abbey.  For the wedding, Abbey wore Amy Kuschel’s Valencia – a gorgeous dress with architectural layering, rose garden lace, and pleated netting.  A sheer V neckline provided a delicate frame to the bold jewelry she wore. For the after party, Abbey slipped into a short sexy beaded fringe dress by Allison Parris with snakeskin booties by Loeffler Randall.

Make Merry used the jewelry as inspiration for the paper goods, incorporating many of the geometric designs into the invitation, escort cards, place cards and menus.  A deep gold liner was used for the invitation envelope and a silver liner for the response envelope.  A bronze cord tied the escort cards to a tall cactus at the restaurant entrance.  The tables were named for succulents – Blue Aloe and Dessert Rose. Blush Designs created a modern southwestern centerpiece in Agave’s private dining room. Succulents and various cactus plants with pops of red nested in black sand created a low runner down the table. Blush Designs custom draped the table with a light grey chevron fabric with coordinating napkins. A dark brown leather cord tied the menu and napkin together.

Abbey held a modern and romantic bouquet of Chocolate Cosmos, black Calla Lilies, and Succulents. The delicate petals of the Chocolate Cosmos softened the hard geometry of the Succulents and Callas. Perkins wore a boutonniere of a mini black Calla Lily and Succulent.

The cake was simple and elegant, again using the jewelry design as inspiration for the geometric patterns on both tiers, with green sugar succulents as a bright accent. The signature drink was a Smokin’ Hot Margarita – Jalapeno infused tequila, triple sec, fresh lime juice and jalapenos.

The jewelry bar was set at Agave’s bar area, near the entrance of the restaurant. Guests were welcome to enjoy their drinks while adorning themselves with pieces from Fortune Favors the Brave’s collection. The jewelry was showcased on top of black sand in glass vessels, incorporating the jewelry into a landscape of succulents and cactus.

Alex and Kendall’s Napa Valley wedding was thirteen years to the day after they met.  A high school service trip to Costa Rica brought them together, and their initial puppy love blossomed into an enduring friendship that followed them to separate colleges and eventually back to each other in San Francisco.  Together again at last, their love for each other grew deeper still and it was only a matter of time before they decided to take the next step and get married (a decision they had each made many years before).

Kendall and Alex wanted to create a wedding that reflected this growing up together.   They wanted the day to feel playful and relaxed, like they are, without losing the elegant and sophisticated elements that maintained the significance of the long-awaited day.  Naturally, Kendall, a fourth grade teacher who likes little more than crafting, wanted to create this atmosphere with as many do-it-yourself projects as possible.  Fortunately her mom, Paula, lived nearby and likes little more than working on craft projects with Kendall.

When Kendall and Alex saw Beaulieau Gardens in California’s Napa Valley they knew it was the perfect setting for their dream wedding.  The space was beautiful and didn’t require any fussing.

Kendall considers her best decision in dreaming up the wedding day was not complying with a strict color palate.  She started with gray and yellow because she loved how gray was sophisticated but not stuffy and yellow seemed so playful against it.    Still, she never felt forced to select details in only these two colors when so many other colors complemented them so well.  Quickly the palate grew with shades of orange, light blue, greens, and even natural earth tones in some of the linens.

Katherine of Cherries in San Francisco completely understood Kendall’s request for beautiful, loose flowers.  Kendall didn’t want anything too structured or within too strict of a color palate.  She didn’t require Katherine to stick within a list of acceptable flowers, instead just trusted her to pick out what seasonal flowers looked best.  The yellow, orange and pale green blooms were incredible.  Yellow, “Billy Balls” for the groom and groomsmen were the perfect, playful accessory.  Old-fashioned tea tins held flowers over yellow and white striped linens in the cocktail area, and a variety of more rustic stone and metal containers held arrangements over natural linen tablecloths in the dining area.  Kendall and Katherine agreed on a flower palate that wasn’t “matchy matchy”.

Going along with this varied palate, the six bridesmaids more an assortment of dresses, with the maid of honor in a long gray dress from JCrew.  Kendall told the girls to look for a dress they liked in gray, yellow or a complementary orange or pattern.  They accessorized with jewelry and shoes in similar shades or neutrals.  Kendall didn’t see the dresses together until the wedding day, and couldn’t have been more pleased.  The various dresses added incredible color to the ceremony and a depth to the photographs that a monochromatic bridal party wouldn’t have achieved.

At some point early on, Kendall decided that the pinwheel was the perfect playful symbol for the wedding day.  She and her mom made over 250 of them using patterned paper, wooden dowels, and ribbon.  The pinwheels became the escort cards for the wedding–a paper strip attached to the dowel had each guest’s name and table number hand-written (in a few different ways).  After making them, they realized they needed some way to hold the pinwheels, so Kendall’ father, Steve, was enlisted to build two 6ft by 6ft foot garden stands.  Painted gray and adorned with pale yellow window planters, the colorful pinwheels looked fabulous and fun.

Viola, from Chewing the Cud in Oakland, California, worked with Kendall to create other paper goods to suit the concept of the wedding.  She used lined school papers and hand-drawn fonts to satisfy the idea of growing up together.  The pinwheel symbol was repeated in gray and yellow on the invitation and on the ceremony programs that doubled as fold-out fans.  Viola also created table number tents that shared numerical facts about the couple (Kendall and Alex met 13 years ago today at table #13).  The menu was done on natural colored paper with “EAT and love well” (a sentiment close to Alex and Kendall’s hearts) displayed at the top.  Chalkboard signage throughout the wedding was in keeping with the playful school concept.

The fabulous food and assortment of desserts (no wedding cake) were catered by Paula LeDuc. Tim Lilly at Paula LeDuc cleverly had the servers all in yellow ties, unbeknownst to us.

Perhaps the highlight of the whole incredible evening was the rising of the full moon in the warm, Napa sky while guests danced under the stars and twinkly lights.

From the Bride… Cy and I met through a mutual friend who had lived with my cousin, Julia, in Mexico City. Cy had attended the University of New Mexico with my cousins. We were introduced over a beer, became fast friends over movies and Red Vines, and started dating 6 months later. My cousin, Julia, was my Maid of Honor and actually introduced me to San Miguel de Allende, our wedding location.

My goal was to have a small, intimate wedding that was a reflection of my husband and me. We love culture, interesting food, beautiful and creative surroundings, and our family and friends. Our wedding was a perfect combination of all of that. We introduced our family and friends to San Miguel de Allende, a colorful colonial town in Mexico. Many of our friends and most of our family had never been to San Miguel. They all loved everything about it – the food, the sights, the people, and the markets! Cy and I loved planning the menu for our reception; we wanted to share a unique blend of modern Mexican cuisine with our guests. I also wanted to make sure my cake was delicious, and still beautifully unique. I’ve never seen a cake I’ve loved more– the white shaved chocolate and the fresh flowers were divine. I asked my wedding planner to have cream and white Otomi (hand-embroidered with beautiful birds, and indigenous to Mexico) table runners made for each table. These beautiful handcrafted pieces were not only stunning but also exhibited the extraordinary talent of Mexican artistry. The fabulous Mariachi band at our cocktail hour also showcased the talent and beauty of the Mexican culture. Antique silver frames with our parents’, grandparents’ and great grandparents’ weddings were the first thing my guests saw as they were greeted with champagne upon entering our wedding venue. Showing our friends those who came before us and have inspired us and helped lead us to this day was important to us. Having our family and most special friends there to share the day with made our day complete.

Cy and I spent many hours creating our ceremony and our program.We were blessed to have a family member, Reverend Erin Bair (Who happens to be my sister-in-law’s sister!) as our officiant. Cyrus and I each chose unique readings that meant something special to us. We wrote our vows together and based them on a beautiful sermon that was written to honor one my best friends and mentor, Sr. Peg Dolan. She evoked love in every aspect of her life and my mom believes it was Sr. Peg relentless prayers that led me to meet Cy. My father sang the Irish Blessing (a tribute to my Irish heritage) to us at the end of our wedding. In our program, we wanted to celebrate the people who played a part of our wedding. We made sure to list each individual and why they were special to us. We also described the traditions and symbols of our ceremony and my attire (ie something borrowed, etc) so our guests knew exactly why our ceremony was the way it was. Every part of our ceremony shared a bit of our hearts with our guests.

My wedding planner was superb! Because it was a destination wedding, I needed help coordinating all the details I knew I wanted. Having Alicia in San Miguel helping me was one of the best decisions I made. My advice, know what you want and go for it!! I hesitated to get married in Mexico because I thought that people might not want to travel to Mexico or be unable to make the long trip. I knew though, that San Miguel was where Cy and I had to get married. I had known it for a long time. The town, the food, the culture, the energy – it just called our names. I was right! I should have never second-guessed myself because of the fear of other people’s reactions.

From the Bride…Chris and I met in Pittsburgh in 2002 while working in the same hospital. We had a lovely courtship for 9 years before deciding to finally get married!  We chose to have our own private, intimate ceremony at Pebble Beach this past May. Pebble Beach is a special, sentimental place for us….we had taken our first vacation there together, and have such very fond memories.  We always thought that it would be a wonderful, beautiful place to be married some day. We married on 5/5/11 with the ceremony taking place on the lawn by the 18th green at The Lodge at Pebble Beach, overlooking the beautiful Pacific.  Absolutely breathtaking!

We still wanted to be able to celebrate our marriage with family and friends and found Bald Head Island to be the perfect place. Our vision was to have a small intimate beach side reception and vacation. We found Mr. Wisner’s home, La Vita Bruta and it perfectly reflected this vision, as well as represent us.  It’s a more comfortable and relaxing place, and we really wanted our guests to feel at home, rather than celebrate in a more formal-like setting.  Kim Fisher really captured our vision and taste with all of her beautiful designs and decor.  I had a wonderful experience planning it all with her and putting this simply elegant beach side vision into place for our vow renewal ceremony and reception. The Martime Market was also a great fit for us. We LOVE food and this was extremely important to us to have a menu with tasteful, flavorful, quality food (and we knew that our guests would expect this from us, knowing that we are food snobs).  We wanted a menu that was a combination of coastal and southern flavors. MM was amazing–staff and food!!  They definitely provided us with exactly what we had asked, and hoped for…outstanding food and service.

We wanted our guests to take something away with them so I was trying to come up with a unique idea for some time as to what kind of wedding favors we wanted to have for our guests.  I wanted something that not only tied in with our beachside reception theme, but also something that was representative of us.  All of our family and friends know that we are foodies, and love to cook!  I discovered the idea of using sea salts, and thought this would be just perfect. I found exactly what I wanted at Williams Sonoma, and loved the variety of flavors that we could share with our guests.  We thought they would be great, and guests may remember us and our day each time they used them at home while cooking/eating a delicious meal.

From the Bride… From the beginning we knew we wanted something intimate, simple yet sophisticated and not super-traditional.  The majority of our 50 guests were from out of town and it was important to us to plan a day that would not only allow us to spend time with people we rarely get to see, but to also showcase the city that we love so dearly.  San Francisco has so much to offer and we really wanted to leverage both the beauty and the urban feeling of the city.  As soon as we saw Shakespeare Garden we knew it was perfect for us – so beautiful and lush, with an air of romance.

It was really important that the entire day felt very personal and we started by writing the ceremony ourselves, and creating programs that focused on our journey and the things we hold most dear to our relationship.  My favorite part of the day was when the groom had to call a “timeout” during the ceremony because he didn’t have the rings.  It was so classically “us” to have something like that happen and I can’t remember the last time we laughed that hard – it just made everything that much more personal and real.

We decided on a dinner party reception with the focus on excellent food, wine and company.  By choosing a restaurant we knew we were guaranteed fantastic food and excellent service, plus we didn’t have to think about caterers or rentals!  Cocktail hour and dinner featured a stunning view of the Bay Bridge which provided a beautiful backdrop to a night filled with love.  Tables were labeled with names of places that were significant during our relationship over our eight years of dating.  The food was all local, and we even skipped the traditional cake in lieu of creme brulee (my all-time favorite dessert). Looking back our day was perfect for us.  It’s ok to not be cookie cutter – stick with what you really want, prioritize the most important things, and focus on the love.

From the Bride…Our fresh and modern wedding took place at the very modern Levyland Estates,  located just between a lagoon and the beach in Carlsbad. We felt it reflected our Southern history [lagoon] and our California present [beach]. We travel to Baja quite a bit so we wanted to reflect some of it’s beauty in our wedding. We had a clean white and tan wedding with bold pops of color based on Spanish tiles and Bougainvillea. The cobalt blue glass complimented bright fuchsia, apricot and lime green flowers. We wanted to balance the modern look and feel of the day with some DIY projects we felt could represent us and our interests.

I was absolutely floored with my flowers and how Paula Rae (Rae Florae) was able to use and incorporate Bougainvillea when other florists scoffed at the idea of using it! She decorated our ceremony arch with the branches and scattered the petals in the aisle and on tables in place of rose petals. All the cobalt blue vases & vessels were collected by my mother (in Wisconsin) and I from home and stores or thrift shops. Friends also donated or lent cobalt blue glass for the event. The blue glasses for the cake stand were all purchased from Pier1, and the votives were borrowed from the florist.

Rob and I met in Savannah, Georgia where we both attended art school. I am a photographer and he is a web designer so we also wanted to design our paper goods ourselves. The Bougainvillea was going to be our reoccurring theme, so Rob designed the invitation, RSVP card and map. We had them off-set printed and then letter pressed them ourselves at home (here is how we did it). To go with our hand letter pressed invites, is a photo of our Save the Date. It’s the photo from his proposal! He knew he wanted it to be photo related so he planned an evening on the beach with long exposure photography. I shot while he practiced writing with light…then he wrote it out. I almost didn’t believe him and thought he was teasing me! (We took a final one to show people and used that for the save the date. My “yes” written in light was on the back of the card) We didn’t want so much un-necessary paper so instead of escort cards, we wrote seating arrangements on mirrors with cobalt blue paint.

I also really love baking so I had the grand idea of baking our favors! We had about 130 guests so I made over 1,000 lime melt-away cookies! It was a passion project which I completed with glassine bags, fuchsia & orange  baker’s twine and name tags that also served as the place card. (Vegetarians had orange twine while non-vegetarians were tied with the fuchsia!)

My friend from college made the guest book and personalized it. There is also a photo of a faux cake in the details. It was custom made for us by my mom’s friend who is a folk artist in Wisconsin, Teena Flanner. It was a gift I received at a wedding shower. She personalized it with a surfboard (him) starfish (ocean), camera (me), watering can (we both are passionate about our garden) and a bee (the mascot from our Art school in Savannah GA where we met)

We owe so much to our family and friends who had a hand in helping make it just a beautiful day that really reflected us as a couple.

From the Bride…As a wedding planner I always ask my brides to describe to me the ‘vibe & style’ they want to experience on the day of their wedding for themselves and their guests. I receive responses such as ‘elegant & sophisticated’, ‘care free & relaxed’, ‘romantic & classic’…but hands down, no matter what, the one word I always here is ‘fun’. I was not of original thought when I began to plan my own wedding. I wanted this to be the most FUN wedding anyone had been to! I wanted it to be a PARTY! So with that in mind my eager fiancé and I began to plan the fun on our engagement night!

My boyfriend of 4 ½ years and I had planned a party at our apartment on Friday the 15th for no reason at all other than to have a party. It wasn’t until that afternoon when I was cleaning the apartment when Sean came home with food and drinks for the party. To my surprise he also came home with the engagement ring that now sits on my finger!!  The ‘its Friday night, so why not have a party’ became our official engagement celebration and that’s where the planning began. The 1st item that made our wedding special was that after a few hours of drinking two of our best friends said ‘we should be the flower girl and ring bearer!!’…that would be Jake and Pat, both over 6’ tall and quickly reaching 30 years old. Done and done! Having those two arm in arm skipping down the aisle was a highlight for many guests!

We started the event by having guests get a signature drink, sitting down at their tables that they would sit later for dinner and enjoying a drink while they watched us get married! I LOVED the ceremony! It was short and sweet, about 10 minutes, but we packed it full of greatness. The best part was that we had this whole thing planned of doing a “shout out to the gays” about how we feel humbled to be able to get married and we hope to live in a country where everyone can have the same opportunity, etc. Well, NY passed same sex marriage the day before and our officiant (through the power of the internet) held up the NY Times and the crowd went wild! It was perfect! I only welled up once when my 8 year godson, Hudson read an EE Cummings poem, “I Carry Your Heart”…he can’t pronounce his ‘r’s quite yet and to hear him read it was the most adorable thing on the planet! Oh, and we excited down the aisle to James Brown, “I Feel Good” and had an impromptu mini dance off down the aisle, too fun!!

In close, I LOVED my wedding! I simply loved it! It was the best time ever! I don’t think I stopped smiling once. It was SO fun! We had in a single room all of the people we loved and they were there to celebrate us. It was amazing!

From the Bride…Nantucket Island has always had a special place in my heart and for as long as I can remember I have always wanted to get married there.  I spent summers going to the Island for family vacations and I fell in love with its tranquil beauty that seems trapped in time.  When Justin asked me to marry him, I immediately took him to visit Nantucket hoping he would fall in love with it just as I had some years ago.  Lucky for me, when he arrived on the Island he agreed, Nantucket was the perfect place to have our wedding.  We chose the White Elephant Hotel to host our ceremony and reception because it was elegant while allowing the natural beauty of the Island to shine.

What tied our wedding together was the fact that the entire process was a labor of love and that we shared our entire selves with our friends and family in attendance.  A close friend became an officiant and helped put together a beautiful ceremony where we wrote our own vows.  The father of the bride made mini Adirondack chairs for the wedding cake topper as well as a watercolor of the island which we sized down for the tables names, and the father of the groom created a work of art for all the guests as a gift. Our wedding reflected who we are as a couple so we must mention that following the ceremony and dinner we turned the dance floor into a party.  Once the dancing began, not a soul was left in their seat.  This could not have been accomplished without our DJ Mathew Vangel, owner of Master DJ Company.

As most, if not all, brides and grooms, we wanted our wedding day to be one of the most memorable days in our life so we found it necessary to have photographers that would not only capture our day, but capture the spirit and the essence of who we are.  Lucky for us we found Davina + Daniel.  We came across them by pure luck and once we saw their photos it was impossible to think about having any other photographers handle our wedding.  They are artists in the truest form of the word and have allowed us to relive the best day of our lives every time we look at our wedding pictures.
