From Bliss Event Productions…This couple hosted a really fun and unique welcome reception for their guests the evening before the wedding.  A local Napa winery was the location for a Napa Valley style BBQ followed by a feature movie under the stars.  We filled the lawn of the winery with blankets and pillows facing the movie screen.  We had a custom espresso/coffee cart with a barista making coffee’s for the guests and a fully stocked movie candy bar.  And of course a popcorn cart popping fresh popcorn throughout the movie.

From the Bride…The night after we were engaged I remember being so anxious to start the planning process that I spent several hours in the middle of the night on Amazon.com buying every wedding design book I could get my hands on. Although I work on events by trade, I really had no idea of what I wanted for my own wedding. The only thing I did know was the location; since our friends and family are scattered throughout the country it was going to be a destination for most of our guests no matter where the locale, and there is something so decidedly modern and elegant about Napa that we just couldn’t resist. We’re also huge foodies- food and wine was one of our biggest priorities of the evening– and we knew that we couldn’t go wrong in the land of celebrated wine and Michelin stars.

I immediately enlisted the help of Brandy from Bliss Event Productions and after one phone call I knew I would be lucky to have her. She has an uncanny ability to bring your thoughts to life and elevates every detail along the way. For example, I knew that I wanted to use Tiffany luggage tags to welcome guests and with Brandy’s help we created a Save the Date that was composed of a luggage tag that read “Destination: Napa!” and the guest’s name that sat upon a corresponding Save the Date card, all wrapped up in a Tiffany box and bow. After all, how could someone say no after receiving a blue box in the mail? I loved that it set the stage for the event we had in store.

I fell in love with the wedding venue as soon as we drove up the long, oh-so-gorgeous tree lined avenue at the entrance of the Estate but it took us a few tries to find the site of the Welcome Dinner. We knew that we wanted a spot that was completely different from the wedding venue, a spot that took advantage of the beautiful Napa vineyards and allowed guests to have the wine tasting experience of a winery. However, once we found the newly opened Valley Gate Vineyard, with its sweeping views and rustic charm, we knew it was perfect. We wanted an evening that was whimsical, sunny, and cheerful. Brandy and I conceived of the idea of having a movie under the stars as a nod to Adam and his love of film. Guests played croquet on the front lawn and sipped wine, melon mojitos, and lavender lemonade before a dinner of roast chicken, molasses baked beans, and jalapeno corn bread.  After dinner, we created the complete movie going experience with a coffee cart, Izze soda, a popcorn machine, and colorful boxes of movie candy. We snuggled up with pillows and fleece blankets, and as the sun set on the eve of our wedding day we watched Father of the Bride under the stars. We loved that it gave us another opportunity to spend time with family and friends, and it was the perfect prelude for what was to come.

We really did have a veritable dream team of vendors that brought such passion and expertise to their work that I always knew we were in good hands: the incomparable Tiffany from Adeline & Grace who is amazing both in front of and behind a lens, Kate from Flowerwild whose stunning work looks as though it is plucked from a still life painting, the amazing Paula le Duc who made dinner service appear effortless (guests are still raving about the hamachi cones!), Reverend Jacqueline Eigen who handled an interfaith marriage nimbly and gracefully, and DJ Adam Bomb whose music really did bring the house down. There are so many indelible moments for me from that weekend, and to be able to share it all with our family and friends really did make it an affair to remember.

From the Bride…Shortly after my now-husband, Keith, opened his plastic surgery practice and medical spa in Redondo Beach, he hired me to work for him.  Whoops!  As a couple, we discovered why it’s not always wise to mix business with pleasure.  After one or two “in-office mishaps”, I decided to spread my wings and resign – effective immediately.  I said goodbye to Aesthetic Edge and Marcus Facial Plastic Surgery and took up a new business…the wedding business (and let me tell you, it was a full-time job!).

Watching shows like “Say Yes to the Dress” and reading blogs like Style Me Pretty became part of my daily routine, along with getting quotes from vendors and trying to keep my sanity.  Fortunately, all of the hard work paid off, and Keith and I ended up having the best day of our lives!  Since our wedding was in Napa Valley over the Fourth of July weekend, I was even granted my wish of having fireworks at my wedding…however far in the distance. In the end, we couldn’t have asked for anything more!

The brides fab jewelry comes from the cuties over at Haute Bride.

Magnus and I grew up in neighboring towns in the Bay Area and then attended the same college. But it wasn’t until our senior year of college that we met through mutual friends at a party. Magnus later surprised me with a beautiful sunset proposal on the rooftop of the same building where we had first met six years prior.

While dating, we’d spent many weekends traveling from San Francisco to Napa to get out of the city and enjoy all that the beautiful wine country has to offer.  We knew right off the bat that Napa is where we wanted get married.  With most of our friends and family already from the Bay Area, Napa provided a mini-destination wedding of sorts. The actual venue choice wasn’t as easy, as there are so many gorgeous venues in the area.  However, we knew we had found the site the minute we arrived at Auberge du Soleil.  The natural elegance and absolutely stunning views of the Napa Valley at Auberge sold us immediately.  It was important to us that our venue showcased the natural beauty of the area and the views from the ceremony site at Auberge surely fit the bill.

The flowers and decor were really important to me in the planning process.  I wanted to pick a color scheme and decor that didn’t compete with the natural beauty of the site, but still set the tone for an elegant fall wedding while reflecting our personalities.  I chose warm browns, taupes and varying shades of orange to complement the warm decor of Auberge, with touches of metallic gold throughout to incorporate a more glamorous feel to the day. I have always loved flowers, so I chose dense arrangements of orange flowers – roses, orchids, dahlias and more, with touches of green to add visual interest and texture.

It was a gorgeous and memorable day that went off without a hitch, with large thanks due to all of our wonderful vendors who helped keep us on track and provided seamless service.

Stationery by the great Paper Moss, and calligraphy by the lovely Megan Chapin Calligraphy.

From Details with Love … Inspiration can come from the most unlikely places. For me the shoot idea began with iconic son “Bye Bye Miss American Pie” by Don Mclean. The song’s  wistful longing for a the days of a simpler Americana was brought to life by the creative minds behind this shoot. Using just a few simple lyrics and the backdrop of Rhode Island’s Mount Hope Farm we captured the nostalgia of this song in a wedding shoot we call, “American Pie”.

We love it when a couple comes to us with one lovely, little detail they envision their special day planned around and with that one thing we style their signature wedding to reflect their unique personality and love story. We ran with all the wonderful Americana details of vintage charm, in a fun color palette of poppy red and robins egg blue, complete with a cute little piggy farm animal, who debuted on more than the invites!

The handcrafted driftwood farm table was accented in fresh cotton linen in bold floral pattern, and poppy red and white stripes. Vintage bronzed and crystal chandeliers hung from the trees to add an element of elegance. Mason jars filled with clusters of seasonal flowers and bringing back the pink carnations tied in vintage lace.

For the “good ol boys,” we provided a whisky bar, complete with hand rolled cigars with custom labels (there’s that cute little piggy again!) A dessert table featured locally made fresh baked apple pies (instead of a traditional wedding cake). On a warm end of summer evening at dusk, at a charming local farm, our unique modern twist on a classic Americana style added tons of character and personality!

When you read Adrienne and Charles’ story (below), you’ll see that research is exactly what Adrienne did! While planning her Napa Valley daytime wedding, she did her homework (some say too much homework!) and she planned the wedding of her dreams at Auberge du Soleil.

Their wedding, sent to us by Adeline & Grace Weddings, really is as pretty as it gets! The emotions and expressions that Tiffany captured are priceless.

Without further ado … Adrienne & Charles’ story …

People always ask us why we decided on a daytime wedding. We put a lot of thought into the overall weekend, and ultimately decided on an earlier wedding so that our guests could enjoy the beautiful, sunny views (Napa is quite dark and unlit at night). Also, since it was a mini-destination wedding for most of our guests, we wanted to give them as much time as possible to explore the gorgeous Napa Valley. Even though we held a daytime wedding, we definitely were focused on making the weekend as fun as possible for guests. We held a private winery tour and tasting at Paraduxx Winery the day before the wedding, and continued the celebration well after the wedding with an after-party in downtown Napa.

how we met
My husband and I met, in typical college fashion, at a party during our second year at U.C. Berkeley (December 2002). We quickly struck up a conversation and went on our first date soon after. During our first date, Charles gave me a present: a VHS tape (yes, that’s how long ago we started dating!) of “When Harry Met Sally,” which is my absolute favorite movie. He had never even heard of the movie before, but I mentioned it during one of our phone conversations and he ended up buying it before our first date. We watched the movie on our second date…but he fell asleep about 20 minutes in. To this day, he still hasn’t seen the movie in its entirety! Seven years later, the movie still had its impact on our wedding.

how we planned
As a PR professional, I’ve planned a fair number of events and that training definitely came in handy when it came to doing venue/vendor research. Every night, I would pour over wedding sites (especially Style Me Pretty!) for tips and inspiration, and add them to “the binder.” It became a running joke among our family and bridal party on how large the binder would eventually become!

what was important
When it came to planning our wedding, we immediately knew that there were three things that were super important to us: food (we eat a LOT), location/venue and photography. We quickly settled on a wine country Napa wedding – we’re huge wine lovers. Napa is close-yet-far from where we live and Charles proposed to me at Carneros Inn in Napa. We felt it was a fitting location to take our next steps in life towards marriage – in fact, we even had a little map of our lives together created as our save the date!

the venue
After much research, we visited a number of venues in the Napa Valley. As soon as we stepped out of the car at Auberge du Soleil, we immediately knew this was our venue. It has a calming yet elegant feel that immediately screams “wine country.” With its soft golden wood tones, floor to ceiling windows that let “yummy light” (as our photographer always says!) stream in and a view that you could gaze at for days, we knew this was our spot to say our “I do’s.” It’s also well-known for its food, which immediately sold us – like I said, we love to eat and the proposed menus were absolutely mouth-watering!

Next up was our photographer. We found Tiffany from Adeline & Grace Weddings fairly quickly, and to this day I am in disbelief that we were able to find someone that could so perfectly “get” us. I’m pretty sure she’s my long-lost friend from another era, because upon first meeting her in person, we immediately bonded over my wedding binder and how organized we both were! From the pre-wedding phone calls/emails, to our engagement session to the big day, Tiffany definitely made everything a breeze. She took absolutely beautiful photos of the day, which our family and friends cannot stop raving about!

the floral design
We found our florist, Lauren from Branch Floral Design, via Style Me Pretty! I was having trouble finding a florist we could both agree on, but as soon as I saw a wedding at Meadowood that was featured on SMP, we immediately knew that she was “the one.” I emailed her that same day, and that was it! We had chosen a light gold, sage green and ivory color palette and, after showing her my inspiration board, she immediately brought great ideas for us to look at. She was super creative and great to work with – she even understood my strange aversion to the color pink!
The flowers at the wedding were so gorgeous; it makes me smile just to think about it. We wanted a very soft, romantic and elegant look, without overwhelming the natural beauty of Napa. For the ceremony, I carried a simple, posy-style bouquet of open white peonies while my bridesmaids carried smaller bouquets of garden roses, lisanthus and tulips in shades of yellow, gold, peach and cream. We kept the rest of the ceremony flowers fairly simple, with a flower garland and flower balls in shades of light green, pale yellow, cream and peach decorating the terrace, and some large white peonies in the entry fountain.
For the reception, Branch Floral Design created beautiful, full arrangements of peonies, garden roses, tulips, hydrangea and lisanthus in cream, gold, peach, pale yellow and muted green that perfectly set off Auberge’s persimmon-colored linens. She also created various arrangements in silver mint julep cups of different sizes to frame our engagement photos, guest book and photos of our beloved dog and cat (we just had to incorporate our pets in the wedding!).

the DIY touches
I’m not a very craft-y person, so I was especially proud of the paper goods, which were a group effort between my bridesmaids, sister and me. My (very patient) sister designed the menu, escort cards and table numbers, which I then printed at home. Charles and I didn’t want to overload our guests with wine country references, so we kept it simple – the escort card holders were made out of sliced wine corks, and the table numbers were attached to empty wine bottles. People liked to tease that we drank more than enough wine to create 90 escort card holders and 10 table numbers – but we actually went the easy (and sober!) route by asking our friend, a part-time waitress, to save old corks and bottles from the restaurant. It was so much easier!

our cake
When it came to the cake, we had one stipulation – it had to taste really, really good. We ended up selecting a simple, four-tier cake with layers of chocolate chip and triple chocolate cake from Two for Two Cakes. All night, our guests kept coming up to us and raving about the cake – we even had people complaining that other guests had stolen their slice because they couldn’t get enough of the cake!

my wedding dress, hair and makeup
For my dress/shoes/hair and makeup, I was pretty low-key: I only went to one salon (Amy Kuschel) and found “the” dress after only trying on five! My mom is still in disbelief that I chose my dress so quickly. It was such a classic, beautiful dress that I knew it was the one right away. My goal for the day was to be comfortable and still look like myself, so I wore little gold flats and kept my hair in big loose curls. Sherrie Long of Sherrie Long Hair & Makeup Effects was an absolute genius – she and her team did an amazing job on five bridesmaids, two mothers and one bride, even though we started at 4:45 a.m. that day {daytime wedding!}

our music
Our music choices were also very meaningful – for our first dance, we chose Frank Sinatra’s “It Had To Be You,” the theme song to “When Harry Met Sally,” as an homage to our first and second dates (I also ended up quoting the movie during my vows). Also, given that my first name is Adrienne and Charles absolutely loves the “Rocky” movie series, our wedding party’s grand entrance was to Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger” – it was hilarious!

overall …
We had so much fun at our wedding – it was a beautiful day, and everyone was definitely in the mood to have a great time. We absolutely loved every moment from that weekend and were so happy with how everything turned out. It was definitely a weekend filled with laughter, some (happy) tears and lots of love.

From the lovely bride:

My husband and I wanted a relaxed outdoor wedding near the water….so when my husband and I stumbled upon Elihu Island in Stonington, CT, we knew it was perfect! I grew up in CT and Clark spent his summers in nearby Weekapaug, RI so the location was ideal. We wanted to have a wedding that was simple yet elegant and where we were surrounded by our families and friends. We were so lucky to be able to hold our wedding in such a beautiful and unique spot.

Blue is both my husband’s and my favorite color so it was an obvious color choice and it set the tone for our ocean/water theme. I decided to add in a touch of yellow just to add a splash of fun and was thrilled with how it turned out!

I planned the wedding long distance from Washington, DC so I was very lucky to have the fabulous duo from True Event/Chocolate Creative Design to help me pull all of the details together. Lucinda Wesson helped me create our beautiful custom letterpress invitations and stationery. And the talented Sarah True was always there with creative ideas and inspiration throughout the planning process and was a tremendous help over the entire wedding weekend.

Our actual wedding was amazing! Despite the threat of a looming storm, we decided to go ahead with the outdoor ceremony. Although my father walked me down the aisle amidst a few sprinkles of rain, the storm never actually came! We were married under a large tree looking out over the water….it was just what we envisioned. The rest of the evening unfolded without a hitch (no rain!) and we just enjoyed every minute of celebrating our day with all of our family and friends.

From Sarah True of True Event:

Laura and Clark were married on Island Farm, Elihu Island.  One of the most magical places in Connecticut to get married.  With only four weddings a year it is an exclusive venue in Stonington off of Long Island Sound. The color palette was navy and white with pops of yellow.  We wanted to create a nautical, preppy, island wedding with subtle delicate, girly details, so we combined nautical details of rope with eyelet ribbon and lace.  The escort cards were pinned to nautical rope that hung like ribbon along a navy board.  Table Numbers were crafted using the rope as well.  Guests signed vintage boating oars for the guest book that Laura and Clark could hang for years to come in their new home.  On the tables we used eyelet paper to wrap the votive candles, and the menus tucked in the napkins.  Overhead in the tent we combined white and white eyelet paper lanterns off of the center poles to form a cluster/chandelier effect which glowed into the night.  The cake was laced with eyelet detail and sat on a white eyelet linen.

From Chocolate Creative Design:

Laura and Clark knew exactly what they wanted and thanks to Soho Letterpress who designed Deirdre and Jason’s paper ( featured on SMP), we were so inspired that we designed a similar suite. The real fun was in coming up with creative ideas for the table numbers and escort cards. For the table numbers, we decided it would be interesting to take a simple glass vase, wrap it in wax paper and then glue handmade rope numbers on it. This way it served two purposes both as a votive as well as the table number itself.  With the escort cards, Laura’s sister hand-calligraphed the envelopes while I created a board that consisted of many pieces of rope tied in knots which we carefully pinned the individual cards to. Using rope as the third design element, allowed us to have consistency throughout. It started with the invitation and continued through to the reception. (hint: when working with rope, be prepared to have a few singed fingertips)

From Hana Floral Design:

Laura wanted simple yet elegant flowers for her June wedding with a nod to the CT shoreline.   We used a color scheme of pale yellows and whites to her backdrop of navy.The tent was filled with white phaleonopsis orchids in distressed silver compotes, along with cubes of white peonies and votives galore.Laura carried a bouquet of fragrant white flowers~ lush peonies, gardenias, phaleonopsis blooms, freesia and garden roses.  Her maid’s carried pale yellow garden roses, lisianthus, tulips, ranunculus, freesia and pale green hydrangeas. Two flower girls had charming halos made up of yellow and white flowers and nantucket baskets filled with petals.

The ceremony took place under “the big tree” on Elihu~  an oversized wreath made up of hydrangeas and yellow lilies was the background of the ceremony.   Cute nantucket baskets hung from navy ribbon along the chairs.

“Laura was looking to achieve a very natural and classic look for her wedding day. Kelly Sharkey of JFBL styled the brides hair in a soft chignon and side part. For makeup, I used a very sheer tinted moisturizer and a touch of bronzer for a sunkissed complexion! Keeping her eyes very simple, we applyed shimmering, taupe eye shadows and a chocolate eye liner. We finished the look with a nude-pink lip shade that emulated Laura’s natural lip color! She was a picture perfect classic bride”!

After deciding on a destination wedding, Kendra and Octavio felt the no-brainer was Napa. They wanted to share the beauty and happiness they experienced on many of their trips up to Wine Country. Plus, many of Octavio’s family members had never visited. Everything about the wedding was inspired by Napa – the colors, the food, the decor and the venue.

They chose The Carneros Inn because they felt it captured everything they loved about Napa. They knew it the moment they stepped foot on the grounds. Planning was so much fun! Not only were the “research” trips the highlights of their months leading to the wedding but all the talks about food, music, and all the other details only made them closer.
