Romantic + Industrial Minneapolis Wedding with Swedish Traditions

Full of feminine details and nods to Swedish traditions, this duo transformed an industrial Minneapolis event center into a vision of Scandinavian glamour.  And with a team of vendors like Munster Rose (can you believe that gorgeous floral chandelier?!), Lovely Bride, Julie Swenson Beauty, The Traveling Photo Booth and Geneoh behind the camera, it was a perfect marriage of style and tradition. See it all here.

From Blush And WhimKeeping true to the Swedish tradition of getting married in the hometown of the bride, Brita and Henrik hosted their June wedding at MUSE Event Center in the stylish North Loop of Minneapolis, MN. With a large majority of their guests traveling to Minnesota from Sweden and NYC, Brita + Henrik decided to infuse their wedding with a fresh, coastal feel, full of feminine details and thoughtful nods to Swedish tradition. Dreamy watercolor, lush florals, and airy draping and sweet white cafe lights gave the modern space the perfect touch of Scandinavian glamour. Guests were greeted with Swedish Mules and rhubarb infused cocktails before taking their seats for the ceremony. An 8 foot floral wreath/chandelier designed by the oh-so talented Jackie of Munster Rose stole the show, hanging above the couple as they said their vows and later as they danced the night away. This nordic design element was also continued in small greenery wreaths, adorned on the heads of Brita and Henrik’s many flower girls.

Cocktail hour featured a bevy of candles and vintage lounge furniture, an intimate and cozy spot to sit and enjoy the dixie land style jazz of Davina and the Vagabonds.

During the reception, white washed vineyard cross back chairs were the perfect coastal touch, accented against the raw linen, hemstitch napkins, and glassware that lined the harvest style tables. Guest were escorted to their tables with calligraphed watercolor cards, all hung on a canvas creating a lovely piece of art.

The dinner was full of Swedish traditions, complete with a Swedish “toast master” who hosted the entire dinner that featured over 15 songs, toasts, speeches and oh-so many Swedish kisses for the bride.

Springtime Botanical Specimen Wedding Inspiration

Florals are often a main focal point of any wedding, but botanical specimens are something new! This stunning Jody Savage-shot inspiration shoot from Splendid Supply Co. brings florals to the forefront, with some gorgeous blooms from FiftyFlowers, yummy bites from Chowgirls, and a stunning model Bride, whose look was fresh and springy, thanks to Julie Swenson and the team from A And B Bridal. See it all right here!

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/129804945 600 338]

From Splendid Supply CoOur shoot’s inspiration started with 19th century botanical specimen illustrations and gardens. Instead of opting for a more traditional vintage approach, our team, led by Maddy of Splendid Supply Co., created a contemporary twist by infusing a modern color palette and a whimsical, Anthropologie-like approach to the execution. Photographed by Jody Savage and coordinated by The Simply Elegant Group, this shoot is fresh and perfect inspiration for a late spring or early summer wedding.

Starting with the concept of terrariums pulled from the vintage inspiration, Dani from Studio Fleurette created a lavish display featuring bulk flowers from FiftyFlowers.com. To give it a fresh look, Dani and Maddy designed and overgrown look that incorporated moss, ferns, air plants, and whimsical flower stems. We fleshed out the rest of the concept by continuing the overgrown look to a dessert bar installation that would take guests’ breaths away!

To continue the specimen concept, we incorporated other details that brought the research element forward in well designed, thoughtful way. We included escort cards that were collected seed packets, decorated with library books from On Solid Ground Vintage Rentals in our color palette, and picked up a stunning customized suite from Minted that prominently featured a botanical drawing – what we considered to be a modern update to the traditional specimen print. We even sourced a dress from A and Be Bridal Shop by Truvelle that had layers that reminded us of ruffled petals on a flower.

Romantic Minneapolis Summer Wedding

Hey there Munster Rose, it’s Liz over here, totally crushing on your beautiful bouquets at this summer celebration. I could stare all day and with the combined forces of Rock Paper Scissors and Denae Brennan Weddings & Events, we’re in wedding wonderland. Jeff Loves Jessica snapped it all for us to gush over and if a picture is worth a thousand words, we have millions of goodies to enjoy right here.

Romantic

From Denae Brennan Weddings & EventsMolly and Marc reside in New York City but chose to get married in Molly’s hometown of Minneapolis. The clean lines and elegance of the Calhoun Beach Club provided the perfect backdrop for their modern and fresh wedding day. The happy couple was all smiles from start to finish and their energy was absolutely contagious. Jackie from Munster Rose provided gorgeous pops of color against the simple black and white palette of the wedding party.

Following the traditional Jewish ceremony, guests mingled while enjoying passed hors d’oeuvres like mini sliders and mini chicken tacos. When the ballroom opened, the Bruce Henry Band welcomed guests with a fast-paced set before dinner was served, setting the tone for the top priority of the reception: dancing! The band kept the dance floor packed all night, and when it was done a DJ finished out the night. The party truly went all night long with the happy newlyweds at the center of it all!

From the Bride… We were set up on a blind date by a mutual friend and have been together ever since. (Thanks again, Missy!) While we live in New York City, we knew right away that we wanted to get married in my hometown, Minneapolis.

We had a lot of guests from out of town, so we really wanted to make sure that they had an opportunity to explore Minnesota. We encouraged everyone to check out the lakes, bike trails, and State Fair, which was the same weekend as our wedding. It was incredibly special to have so many of our favorite people in Minneapolis, and we were pretty much bursting with happiness the entire weekend.

Planning the wedding long-distance meant that we were pretty reliant on my parents, who live in Minneapolis, and our vendors. Luckily, everyone was amazing! We had our rehearsal dinner at the Icehouse, which was a super fun (and delicious!) way to kick things off. We wanted the wedding itself to be elegant, simple, and really fun – and Calhoun Beach Club was perfect. Our florist, Jackie from Munster Rose, created beautiful arrangements and gave each of our flower girls a huge white dahlia to carry, which I loved! Our band, The Bruce Henry Band, made sure our guests danced their socks off and our wedding coordinator, Denae Brennan, made sure everything went off without a hitch.

All in all, it was the greatest of great weekends, and we feel so lucky to have had so many wonderful friends and family there to celebrate with us.

Southern Charm Meets Northern Elegance Wedding Inspiration

Since SMP was born in Boston, we’re always partial to a New England wedding, but I always find myself a sucker for some good old fashioned Southern charm. Laura Ivanova Photography captured all the North-meets-South pretty in this wedding inspiration shoot, from Sadie’s Couture Floral‘s stunningly soft floral arrangements, to the gorgeous tabletop decor from Weddingstar Inc., and we’ve got it all in the gallery here!

From This Love WeddingsFor this styled celebration we wanted to incorporate Southern charming traditions while having a fun Northern flair. We knew the Calhoun Beach Club would be the perfect setting-– it’s such a clean, sleek, and swanky beach club. We were lucky enough to work with the extremely talented Laura Ivanova who captured every bit of this simple, classic affair.

The Bride wore the gorgeous Monique Lhuillier gown, Candy from L’Atelier Couture paired with a cathedral veil and Badgley Mischka peep toe pumps. Shades of gold, blue and white were the perfect recipe for the warm and inviting soiree that included mini pecan tarts at each place setting and a sweet tea bar. Gretchen Berry Design Co. created a custom designed invitation suite with a delicate touch that we can’t help but swoon over. A monogram is also seen throughout all elements: from the paper goods to the two-tier cake. Piecing it all together, Sadie’s Floral fashioned some of the most beautiful bouquets, garlands, and lush centerpieces to create a posh look.

Letterpress 101

We’re talking about one of my absolute favorite topics today, SMPers. Letterpress is how I personally got my start in the wedding industry, so I can appreciate the love (and hard work!) that goes into the process, resulting in some of the prettiest wedding invitations you’ll ever set eyes on. So we teamed up with the lovely gals at Printerette Press and 2nd Truth to give you a behind the scenes peek at just how those gorgeous invites come to life.

CONCEPTUALIZATION

From Printerette PressAt Printerette Press, when we work with clients to create custom designs, we begin the relationship with a consultation – in person or digitally. This is often one of the most fun parts of the process! We love getting to know our clients and piecing together the details that will soon become the perfect pieces for their event. We ask loads of questions (and sometimes they’re a little weird!) to really get to know the people and the event.

Sometimes our clients like to tweak designs from our existing collection to fit their wedding. Other times, we start from scratch to create fully custom pieces just for them. Beginning the design process is where we like to get our hands a little dirty! A lot of our invitation suites incorporate unique details like custom portraiture, hand lettering, watercolor details, etc. so this is the place for us to pull out the sketchbook, paint brushes, and anything else we need to get the creative juices flowing.

We communicate back and forth with our clients using digital proofs. And when the design is approved and ready, we move to print. We offer a few different print methods for our clients, but our most popular is the one that we do in-house: Letterpress.

PLATE MAKING

After our design is approved by our client we are ready to go to print! (In the case of the example shown here, we first had the watercolor peonies digitally printed onto our paper before we begin the letterpress process.) The first step in the letterpress process is to make plates. Each color on a letterpress printed piece requires it’s own run through the press, and thus, it’s own plate. In the case of our wedding invitation example, we created a plate for the reply card and invitation (to be printed in gray), and another plate for the silver foil. So, the invitation will pass through the press twice (once for gray, once for silver foil), and the reply card will pass through just once (for the gray).

Plate making is something we just recently started doing, and let us say it’s been quite the learning experience. That being said, we’re very glad to be able to make them in-house. A well-made plate is one of the most essential pieces of a letterpress job. If you don’t have a good plate, you don’t have a good print. To make a plate, the design is printed in reverse on film and then adhered with suction to photopolymer plastic. Then, we expose it to light for several minutes. Once the design from the film has been exposed to the plastic, we wash away the unexposed plastic so that only our design remains. After drying and exposing the plastic to light one final time to harden the design, we are all set to print!

MIXING INK & CUTTING PAPER

A Pantone color palette (a designer’s color Bible), provides the “recipe” for mixing each color. To mix the gray shown here, we mixed 80% transparent white, 19% black, and 1% red. Getting an ink color precisely correct can be a challenging task – so having a specific formula of a color is really important. That’s where the Pantone formula guide, and our super accurate scale comes in very handy.

PRINTING

One of the more difficult tasks a letterpress printer faces is perfectly lining up the plate to the area of the paper you need to print on (This is called “registration”). Getting everything straight, centered, aligned can take a few tries before we get it perfect. The more colors we have on a job, the more complicated the registration is because it requires that we register multiple plates.

Once the plates are set, it’s go time! Certain things to concentrate on are the amount of pressure + packing you have behind the paper. This allows you to either gently tap the paper, or punch it harder to get a deep impression. We like to print with a really nice, deep impression. To look really letterpress-y, you know?

We have a couple of presses at Printerette Press. The bulk of our jobs are printed on the Heidelberg Windmill, pictured here. The windmill pulls each sheet into it’s clam-shell, prints it, and spits it out on the other side in a windmill motion. It’s very fast, very efficient, and sometimes a little scary. After all of the steps in printing are finished, we trim them up using our stack paper cutter and voila! a handcrafted wedding suite that beautifully sets the tone for our client’s wedding.

WHY IS LETTERPRESS MORE EXPENSIVE?

It is a largely hand done process on antique equipment that yields a texturally luxurious and one of a kind finished product.

IS IT MORE EXPENSIVE FOR MORE COLORS? DOES DIGITAL PRINTING SAVE ON COST?

Each color on a letterpress job requires it’s own run through the press, and it’s own plate. The more colors, the more materials and production time. Digital printing definitely will save on costs due to the less involved printing process. While you can achieve more colors with digital printing, the process is often called “flat” printing, because the final result includes no textural qualities and requires less hands on production. We specialize in letterpress but offer both methods to cater to all kinds of budgets.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN METALLIC FOIL AND LETTERPRESS?

The metallics that you often times see on invitations is an entirely different process called foil stamping. A main difference is when it comes to the color gold for example. If a bride wants pure gold, we typically suggest the route of foil stamping due to the fact that gold letterpress ink typically looks more bronze because it lacks the metallic effect that foil stamping has to offer. The combination of foil stamping and letterpress is unbelievably gorgeous and has quickly become a trending request in our shop.

HOW CUSTOMIZABLE IS THE PROCESS?

The process is incredibly customizable. We specialize in quirky designs that speak to each and every client that we work with. We have a collection of suites to provide brides with a stepping stone, but are always open to tweaking these existing designs, or creating something entirely new!

IS IT ECO-FRIENDLY?

The paper we use is 100% cotton. It is a bi-product of the textile industry and is made up of cotton linters that would otherwise be garbage. We also use soy based inks.

WHAT IS USUAL TURN AROUND TIME?

As soon as the design is approved to print it typically takes around 15 business days for production.

HOW DO I KEEP EVERYTHING IN MY BUDGET?

We pride ourselves in working hands on with our brides to ensure that we can figure out ways of keeping everything in their budget. By working with different print methods and materials, we are able to accommodate nearly any budget.

Elegant Summer Lakeside Wedding

I’m not supposed to choose favorites, but this summer soiree has stolen my heart. Not only did this duo seamlessly paired their Big Day with breathtaking beauty, but an amazing team of vendors to boot (think Molly’s Flower StudioPixelskew and Lasting Impressions Weddings). Filled with beautiful moments from start to finish, Leah Fontaine captured it all right here!

From Lasting Impressions Weddings… Terryn and Mike were married on a beautiful summer day just 6 months after we started to plan their wedding! Terryn had moved to Minneapolis from Arkansas for work.. and the rest is history when she met Mike!!

The ceremony took place at Lake of the Isles church.. a quaint little church right by the lake. The scenic drive to the chapel was perfect to show off the area for all of our out of town guests. Staying very traditional Mike and Terryn did not see each other before the ceremony and she looked radiant walking down the aisle!

They chose to have their reception at the Minneapolis Depot because of its beautiful architecture and it is adjoined with a hotel, very convenient for their guests flying in from the south! June in Minnesota means peony season!! And Terryn wanted to incorporate lots of flowers that were garden inspired and we want to bring in a color that would brighten up the reception space!! The night ended with late night snacks and uplighting that added a fun vibrant look to the room!!

Romantic Fall Wedding at Lyndale Park Peace Garden

I’m all for breaking rules and creating new rituals, but after watching this clip from Skyfocus Films, I have a whole new appreciation – and craving for – the beauty of tradition. Watching this couple partake in their family’s customs made me sentimental for those moments. Add in the gorgeous florals and styling by Munster Rose and photos by Laura Ivanova and this wedding isn’t to be skipped over.

[iframe http://player.vimeo.com/video/108168094 600 338]

From The Bride… Browsing through our wedding photos brings me back to the perfect Minnesota fall day filled with joy, laughter, and love. Jon and I had always wanted an outdoor wedding ceremony filled with beautiful flowers and greenery. Our wedding was an intimate celebration with 75 of our closest friends and family from Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia, and all around the US.

We took it upon ourselves and put together the dream team for what we care most about: photography, videography, and floral. We were blessed to have close friends and amazing vendors helped us with the planning and execution. Every detail really came together the day of. It was truly the dream wedding we have always wanted.

Chic Lakeside Country Club Wedding

With a team of talented vendors and all roads leading lakeside, this soiree is overflowing with personal details. From the rose garden inspired Sadie’s Couture Floral & Design buds, to handmade signage, every detail Laura Dawson coordinated is significant. Each image from Jeff Loves Jessica is more beautiful than the last and you can see them all here!

From The Bride…Our vision was of an intimate, Minnesota summer wedding full of personal details. Knowing that many of our guests would be visiting Minnesota for the first time, we wanted to showcase the beauty of our home state with an outdoor reception. We also loved the romantic feel of having string lights under a starry sky above our dance floor. I had an image from Pinterest which I carried with me to vendor meetings so they could get a clear understanding of the mood we were striving to provoke.

We explored a number of venue options until we realized the obvious choice right in front of us: Minikahda (Ojibway for “On the edge of the water”), the century-old Minneapolis club I had grown up at. We approached The Minikahda Club with our “out-of-box” vision to host the entire reception on the roof-deck overlooking Lake Calhoun, and from which the view of the Minneapolis skyline after dark is dazzling. Jenni, the coordinator at the club, enthusiastically embraced our vision and her staff executed it flawlessly.

Minneapolis doesn’t mean “City of Lakes” for nothing, and we were blessed with the use of three for our festivities. Our reception overlooked Lake Calhoun, and just south is Lake Harriet where we had our “first look” and bridal party photos. They were taken at the Lake Harriet rose garden where I frequently wandered as a child. From there it was a quick trip back north to the church on Lake of the Isles where Nick and I had gone ice skating on our second date.

Winters in Minnesota are conducive to DIY projects, and I probably had up to five ongoing wedding “projects” at any given time, taking over our living and dining rooms. However, knowing that I had created all the signs, monogramed the napkins and candles, and designed the stationary and decor layout, made our wedding more personal. In addition, the necklaces my bridesmaids wore were custom designed by me and made in Shanghai when I traveled there for work. Other personal details included my veil, which has been in my family since the 1830s, and the flower girl dress, which I had worn 25 years before in my Uncle’s wedding. His daughters were now my attendants. Of course, our very much-loved maltipoo, “Peaches,” had to play a role, so we named one of our signature cocktails after her. The other signature cocktail was named after a very special place: Madeline Island in Lake Superior where my family spends summers.

While the weather did go our way, not everything went according to plan. Despite the limo forgetting to pick up the groomsmen for pictures, despite the antique car breaking down on the way to the reception, despite the groom getting a bloody nose minutes before the ceremony, and despite the father of the bride stepping into a large pile of dog waste right outside the church, our day was flawless. The best advice I was given during the planning process was to control the “controllables” and on the day of the wedding, just let it all go. So, being the type-A bride that I was, I spent months creating color-coded, personalized day-of schedules for each member of the bridal party. Months meeting with vendors to review the floor plans and highly detailed floor and table grids drawn up by me for all pieces of wedding décor. Weeks solving the unexpected like our linens being discontinued before the wedding. And days coordinating a custom designed necklace to be remade in Shanghai and picked up by one of my coworkers after the original was lost in the mail. But, had I not sat back and had faith that all our outstanding wedding vendors would do their jobs, knowing that I had done all I could possibly do to “control” our day to its ultimate perfection, I would not have recognized the magic and memories that encapsulated our wedding. It was truly perfect. A special thank you to all who participated, we couldn’t have done it without you!

Inspiration for the Littlest Members of the Wedding Party

So often we see adorable flower girls and the dapperest of ring bearers gracing the pages of SMP, and now, we have whimsical inspiration dedicated to these wee ones. From crazy cute outfit ideas to a children’s table that will surely getting a standing ovation, this shoot crafted by Whitepeacock Styled Events + Munster Rose and Liz Banfield is the true definition of charming.

From Liz Banfield PhotographyInspired by a cotton floral print from Liberty of London found in a children’s party dress by Oscar de la Renta, photographer Liz Banfield and creative powerhouse Whitepeacock Styled Events set out to capture a spring wedding design to compliment an adorable flower girl and ring bearer. The exuberant palette of pink, mango, and turquoise informed all the charming details, including a “kids-only” table featuring card games, custom name balloons, strawberry milk jars rimmed with sprinkles, macaron “pops,” and glitter cupcakes. What child wouldn’t feel special at this event? Whitepeacock also created a vibrant table skirt made of ribbons, lace trim, and pom-poms to compliment the vintage table.

Not afraid of a little DIY, a ring pillow was sewn from turquoise gingham with a contrasting mini-pom trim placed on a wood plate from Muji. The flower girl “basket” was adapted (with two drilled holes) from a coordinating wood bowl, adorned with a sweet floral trim from Daytona Braids & Trimming in NYC. Striped straws were transformed into “waving wands” with the application of ribbons.

Floral designer Jackie Reisnauer of Munster Rose updated the typical flower girl headpiece by grouping the flowers in an asymmetrical arrangement. A combination of seasonal spring blooms — Scabiosa, Garden Roses, Ranunculus, Sweet William, and Italian Ruscus — highlighted the color palette as well as the flower girl’s charming curls. For the ring bearer, a scaled down boutonniere complimented his dapper Oscar de la Renta linen jacket and plaid bow-tie.

To make the duo feel extra special, individual mini-cakes were created by Banfield using and easy fondant recipe (comprised mostly of store bought marshmallows!) found online. Miniature cookie cutters were used to cut out simple floral shapes and then topped off with a simple decorative sugar pearl.

Now enter this inspiration full of greenery styled by Studio Fleurette + This Love Weddings and wine. Lots and lots of wine. It’s a relaxed yet totally elegant approach to welcoming captured by Laura Ivanova  that is sure to inspire.

From This Love WeddingsMany couples want to offer their guests a fun, relaxed yet stylish welcome to their wedding weekend. We took to creating a welcome dinner that’s sure to inspire. This romantic, organic, natural styled shoot was created at Minneapolis’ Uptown full service wine bar, Spill The Wine. We built the design around the elements of the beautiful space incorporating a wine tasting, chalkboards, and plenty of greenery.

We set the tone with a theme to have guests wine, dine, and unwind. Each place card included a note in beautiful calligraphy, “We pair well together, before we dine enjoy cheese and wine.” The pallette included a cheese and wine pairing featuring Rosé and red wines with a fun See-Swirl-Smell-Sip tutorial as well as wine tasting score cards. The table was dressed with a cascading garland of bay and olive branch mix with lush cream and ivory blooms. A bay, sliver dollar eucalyptus, olive branch mix was used to make the show-stopping chandelier.

Romantic

From Liz Banfield and Rocket Science Weddings & EventsAccording to Amy and Maury, there are never enough reasons to get dressed up so going with black tie for their wedding was a natural choice. Working with their event designer, Gretchen Culver, they settled on the theme of “Modern Glamour,” inspired by the timeless style of the 1950s but with new twists on classic traditions. This theme fit perfectly with the venue, the historic Minneapolis Club. Both the ceremony and reception would take place here so that guests to move throughout the spaces with ease.

The bride loves Cinderella, so hints of the fairytale showed up throughout the event from the Save the Date card that was designed to look like the Cinderella movie credits to the beverage napkins that read “happily ever after.” And although Amy didn’t wear glass slippers, her knockout Valentino shoes seemed fit for a princess. Amy also got to wear her dream gown, the Vera Wang Luxe “Esther” from L’Atelier Couture Bridal which was accessorized by a train-length black velvet sash. Velvet accents were used throughout the wedding design, including the wedding invitation that was enclosed in a velvet black “tie.”

Inspired by vintage photos of Frank Sinatra, the groom and his groomsmen donned single carnations for boutonnieres. Also to keep his wedding party occupied while waiting for pictures to begin, he had custom playing cards made and set out poker chips along with classic games like backgammon and chess for some old-school entertainment. Later in the reception, these games were also put out for the guests to play.

Instead of a traditional monogram, a unifying theme throughout the design was a custom pattern created by the Gretchen Berry Design that was inspired by the iconic carpet pattern in the Minneapolis Club’s dining room. The graphic pattern was repeated throughout the printed materials.

In a modern twist on the old school “champagne fountain,” glasses of champagne were incorporated into a oversized ice sculpture designed especially to hold modern stemless flutes. This sculpture served as the centerpiece to a pre and post ceremony cocktail hours for guests. And later, these same glasses were washed, filled with candy, and given as a parting gifts.

In keeping with Jewish tradition, the ceremony was timed for after sunset on Saturday. Cool blue tones from the dusky sky outside lit up the oversized leaded glass windows, a beautiful counterpoint to magical candlelit ceremony. The room’s columns were accented with floral garlands, twisting floor to ceiling. With the stage thus set, the bride and her parents emerged from the doors under a canopy of dangling votives and lace installation to evoke “fairy godmother dust” created by Rocket Science Weddings and Events. They arrived at a modern lace chuppa in which each corner of a small stage was anchored with oversize hurricane lanterns that housed gold candelabras. Wishing to be surrounded by their friends and family, the couple chose to have seating along three sides of the chuppa rather than rows of seats behind them.

After cocktail hour, guests were led to the upstairs dining room and greeted by individual “his-and-hers” cake-pop escort cards. Two flavors, hers with a pink and his with an ivory frosting, were sprinkled with edible gold glitter.

Upon entering dinner, the mostly ivory and pink color scheme was transformed to ivory and yellow. This floral transformation complemented the moss green linens and iconic carpet in the dining room, creating a very formal yet fresh feel for dinner.

The couple cut into a four-tier wedding cake iced with ivory buttercream in the club library. The nostalgic confection was adorned with roses and two porcelain cats, representing the couple’s beloved pets.

After a spirited Hora dance, guests mingled, danced, played games and took turns at a photo booth. Mid-reception they were offered an array of late night snacks including 50’s-style malts (complete with authentic white and red straws), sliders and petite grilled cheese sandwiches to keep the dancing going well into the night.

Modern Minnesota Backyard Wedding

When it came time to settle on a location for their long-awaited nuptials, Megan and Justin knew there was no spot better than his childhood home. And with a family of makers and designers to help them plan the day, their backyard wedding turned into an elegant affair with a black and white palette guiding every detail. A Sunshine Moment captured the beauty and lucky for you it’s all waiting here!

From the Bride… Justin and I met in high school. We grew up in a small town, he was a senior and I was a freshman when we first met, so it was a big deal when we sparked a interest for one another. We both knew something was there between us, but we didn’t start dating until years later. Due to various life events (mainly in part to the fact that we were both so young and at very different stages of our lives at that point in time), Justin and I went our separate ways and had little to no contact for 3 years. Then one day, I got a random text message from him. As he would say, he couldn’t stop thinking about me and just decided to reach out to see if I would respond. Obviously fate has different intentions for us than we had expected. We began dating and the rest is history!

When Justin popped the question, we had been together for 6 years and both new we wanted to spend forever with each other, so of course I couldn’t respond “YES” quick enough. Justin proposed in a fairytale-like way. Anyone who knows me, knows that I absolutely LOVE the holiday season. It truly is my favorite time of year, so when Justin popped the question on New Years Eve 2011, it made perfect sense. Going to plays is one of our things we love to do together, so weeks in advance he had planned a date night for us to go see Cinderella at a local theater and grab dinner at one of our favorite restaurants in the city. On the night of New Years Eve, 2011, we walked out of the play and it was snowing these huge, puffy, white gorgeous snowflakes, the sight was so beautiful it made me tear up – little did I know what was coming that would make me really cry. He asked if I wanted to go for a walk in the park that is across from the theater. The park had all the trees light up, dripping in gorgeous, sparkly white lights. We walked hand-in-hand, soaking up the beauty of the snow, loving that moment with each other…. And then Justin got down on one knee and asked me to spend the rest of my life with him. It was truly a magical moment.

When we began discussing the details of our big day, we considered everything from getting married on a mountain top in Vancouver to a Chateau in the French countryside, but after much deliberation (over a year) we landed on home, literally, Justin’s childhood home. Twenty acres of trees, rolling hills, and open grassland in a small town northwest of Minneapolis, Minnesota. A place that encompasses our history, our present lives and our future! Home is where the heart is, and that is truly the case for us. Justin isn’t very emotional…yet, the thought of celebrating our marriage surrounded by family and friends where he grew up brought tears to his eyes. At that moment, we knew the Zwieg home is where we needed to make the day! The close relationships with our family and friends is what means the most to us, so we wanted all of our loved ones to be a part of our special day.

One of the biggest challenges of our wedding was that we finally solidified the date and location four months (Yes – FOUR MONTHS!) before we said I do at the Zwieg home! Needless to say it was a busy four months for everyone involved, especially because we did most everything as a family…thus, truly a “family affair!” Justin comes from a family of designers (Justin is an Art Director/Graphic Designer; his brother Jamison, is an Interior Designer; his Mom is a Designer, his dad isn’t a designer per se, but he can make or do just about anything.) It only seemed fitting that we put all of our brains together and decide to conquer this fete together. Justin and I’s big focus for the wedding was simple; we wanted it to be comfortable and welcoming for our guests, beautiful (in a tangible and intangible way) and we wanted it to feel like us, both as individuals and as a couple.

Our color palette was sophisticated with mostly black, white and silver with a little pop of pink for some fun! For us, everything is in the details, so every tiny aspect was planned out for very specific reasons. Justin designed our own personal crest, which we used throughout the wedding on large signs, coasters, and napkins. We plan to use this family crest for years to come! My mother-in-law planted all of the urns and outside arrangements, and made all of the bouquets. Our Mom’s and Justin’s siblings helped plan the entire wedding. My father-in-law had a rigorous mowing and watering schedule to ensure that the yard and plants were kept in impeccable condition throughout the heat of the summer.

My dad created the pergola structure where we got married underneath, cut all the wood slabs and loaned us his deer antlers for the nature element in the table centerpieces and throughout. My girlfriends helped me make the “Love is Sweet” sign on the dessert table and our table numbers. The guys all helped wrap the trees with white lights – dozens of trees! Justin’s high school friend was our officiant. My brother-in-law, Jamison, is an incredible designer and he took all of the pieces we imagined, and all of our desires and turned the location into a masterpiece. He set every table with help of family members, added his black crystal chandelier to the pergola to add flair…added some lamps to add ambiance and luxury to our head table…he cut the grass in a cross cut pattern to make sure it was perfect for our walk down the aisle…among so much of his design work. Jamison and I even went to Otten Brothers Nursery in Orono, MN (a family nursery on my Dad’s side) and were able to borrow dozens of trees and shrubs to add to our estate décor – wow! Everything, and I mean everything, about our wedding was done in four months and with the help of our families and friends.

Our big day was magical! We woke up to a beautiful, sunny, Minnesota summer day. The heat was on, not only temperature wise, but also getting everyone and everything ready for our 5pm event of our lifetimes. This past summer was one of the hottest summer in years. The girls got ready at my childhood home, while our families were rushing around at Justin’s childhood home getting everything setup and in place. The time flew by! Before we knew it, guests were arriving and it was show time. The energy was high, love was in the air and the emotions were a roller coaster ride – this was the day that Justin and I had been looking forward to for years. As the ceremony began, the sky went from bright and sunny to dark grey. It was mystical, ethereal – but not a drop of rain fell. We got through our very intimate ceremony, did the entire receiving line and once every last guest was seated and Justin and I walked into the tent to start the reception – with a strike of lighting and a crack of thunder, it started pouring rain. The timing couldn’t have been more perfect… it was a refreshing, summer evening rain that cooled the temperature down.

We weren’t interested in the typical banquet food, so we hired a caterer that came onsite and grilled everything outside. We served delicious, comfort food that everyone loves – angus burgers, chicken sandwiches and mac ‘n cheese for the main course and dessert was a local bakery’s delectable Tres Leche cake and my dad’s famous homemade chocolate chip cookies. Our wedding was a black tie event, but Justin and I are passionate about good food and wanted our guests to really enjoy their dinner. Our menu juxtaposed with black tie attire was the casual elegance that we wanted to accomplish on our wedding day. After dinner, our fathers, siblings’ and dearest friends gave the most touching speeches. Truly one of our most favorite moments of the evening. They were the longest, most thoughtful speeches I have ever experienced. There was not a dry eye in the house. After the speeches, we turned down the lights and danced the night away. Throughout the night the thousands of twinkle lights and bunches of tiki torches stayed light and sparkled all night. The rain added to the ambiance of the evening and according to an old fortune says that rain on your wedding day is good luck.

Our families and close-knit group of friends made everything come together perfectly. The day was an absolute dream come true. We couldn’t have asked for a better celebration to mark the next chapter of our lives together.

Scandinavian DIY Stylized Shoot

There are two things we love around here, gorgeous inspiration and DIYs we can actually do. So this little post from Blush and Whim is sooo up our alley. Because not only do we have the pretty images in this gallery from Jaimee Morse, but there are also a few DIYs tucked below that aren’t only beautiful, but oh so doable. See even more from this shoot here.

From Jaimee Morse PhotographyI worked with a bunch of Minneapolis’ best wedding vendors to create this Scandinavian DIY stylized shoot. We created the shoot to have touches of Scandinavian with lots of natural and earthy tones. We also wanted to shoot it outside to capture the beauty that winter offers. We wanted the details in the shoot to be attainable by all brides so we created a bunch of DIY items such as a bouquet, floral crown, and décor. Also, our amazing hair and makeup artists gave us the “how-to” for the look the model’s are wearing.

BOHO CHIC HAIR IN 10 STEPS

1. Use a hair volumizing powder at the roots and backcomb the hair.
2. Gently comb the hair smooth.
4. Section the hair into 4 quadrants. Leave some hair at the nape of the neck out of the lower quadrants.
5. Make a loose braid in each quadrant.
6. Criss-cross the braids on top of the head and secure with bobby pins at the scalp.
7. Take the end of a rat tail comb or with the end of skinny makeup brush and gently lift and loosen the braids.
8. Take the remaining hair (at the nape of the neck) and softly twist several sections up into the style and secure with bobby pins.
9. Spray with a medium hold hair spray.
10. Scan areas that might need to be adjusted and sculpt into place with your hand. Secure with pins and spray to hold.

PRETTY IN PINK MAKEUP IN 10 STEPS.

1. Prep the skin with moisturizer and primer(s)- face, lid and lip.
2. Use 3 different hues of pink on the eyelid. Start with a darker pink with lash line to crease. A mid-tone pink in the crease. And a light and shimmery pink at the brow bone.
3. Use a mid-tone grey eyeshadow to line the top and bottom lash line. Use a clean brush to smudge and soften the line.
4. Use a black eyeshadow to do a tight line on the lash line and on the upper water line of lid.
5. Apply black mascara and then apply false eyelashes.
6. Use an ash- toned eyeshadow to define the brows.
7. Apply concealer in areas that need to be concealed or evened out- around the nose, cheeks, under the eyes.
8. Apply a tinted moisturizer that matches the undertone of skin all over the face.
9. Apply a blue based pink blush on the apples of the cheeks.
10. Finish with a pale pink lip gloss.

DIY BOUQUET

1. Wet green bouquet holder.
2. Start at the very bottom of the bouquet holder and place branches in a horizontal line around the front half of the bouquet holder.
3. Make sure to use thin branches because thick branches will tear up the bouquet holder and then fall out.
4. Work your way up the bouquet, creating row on top of row of branches until you’re a row or two from the very top.
5. Use a glue gun to secure any loose or larger branches into the bouquet holder.
6. Once the front is done, take small sprigs and place them in the back or where there is still green bouquet holder showing.
7. To add length to the bouquet wire the top of a branch to the bottom of a branch already in the bouquet holder. We only did this 3-4 times or else it was getting too heavy and looked misshaped.
8. Wrap something around the bouquet stem to make it look pretty. We used birch bark with some newspaper underneath to add width. But you could use fur, ribbon, or fabric!
9. If you’d rather not DIY your bouquet we would love to recommend Munster Rose, Studio Fleurette, and Ashley Fox Designs to create a bouquet that looks like this one here.

DIY CROWN

1. Start with a somewhat bendable branch of greens.
2. Wire two branches together with about a one inch overlay.
3. Wire the branches together on the other side to create a circles.
4. Repeat making circles until desired thickness is achieved and then wire branches together. We did this twice to create the thickness pictured above.
5. If wiring is showing, hot glue a leaf or two on wire to cover it.

DIY GLASSES

1. Get a space ready for painting by laying down newspaper.
2. Place tape around the bottom of stem of glass so there’s a straight chalk board line.
3. Paint the base of the glass with the chalkboard paint.
4. Let dry about 30 minutes.
5. Paint again 2-3 times.
6. Remove tape slowly.
7. Use chalk pen instead of normal chalk because normal chalk will scratch paint off of glass.

DIY BOTTLE CANDLES

1. Gather a collection of glass bottles in your desired height, shape, and color. We used all clear glasses.
2. Remove all labels and foils on bottles using Goo Gone or soaking in water for a while.
3. Purchase tapered candles in a variety of heights that are also tapered on the bottom to fit a standard size candle holder.
4. Gently twist the candles into the bottles until they are well secured.
5. Working in a warm environment will help the candles twist into the bottles without breaking.
6. You can quickly burn the edge of the candle closest to the bottle neck to secure if still loose. Make sure to do this quickly because it will cause black the candle to turn black.

From the photographer… Marion and David’s love story began during Marion’s first days as a freshman at Brown University. David, an upperclassman and the older brother of Marion’s best friend, gallantly offered to “show her around.” Soon a romance bloomed. The couple became engaged years later when David proposed at home by hanging a diamond engagement ring on their Christmas tree.

Marion and her planner Stephanie Johnson of Park Place Planning set out to create a day that would suit Marion’s classic and timeless style. Though the couple resides in Florida, Marion knew from the beginning that she wanted to her wedding to take place in her home state of Minnesota, with a reception at the picturesque Woodhill Country Club where she spent the carefree summers of her childhood. The club’s rolling hills provided an ideal backdrop for the cocktail hour as well as views from the upper deck during the dinner and dance.

Since Marion and David were going to have many out of town guests, they prioritized showing everyone all the best that Minnesota has to offer. Upon arriving at the hotel, each guest received a thoughtful, comprehensive welcome box created by Park Place Planning. The box included colorful wayfarer-style sunglasses, mini Chandon champagne bottles, custom stir sticks, a crucial “recovery kit,” along with trail mix snacks and bottled water. The entire weekend was filled with parties so that everyone had multiple opportunities visit with the bride and groom. Since the wedding was happening during the Fourth of July week, they started off the festivities with a welcome party boat cruise around Lake Minnetonka, dining on ribs and chicken while watching the holiday fireworks over the water. The next night, they hosted their guests at a groom’s dinner at the historic Minneapolis Club. And after the wedding reception, everyone was invited to keep the party going after hours.

The wedding day began at the spacious and elegant Minneapolis bridal salon, L’Atelier Bridal Couture. Taking advantage of their “White Glove Service,” Marion and her ladies enjoyed a luxurious morning of pampering at this picture-perfect “getting ready” location. They spent the morning in the sun-lit space having hair done by Jon Charles Salon and makeup by Jett Makeup. Marion gifted her bridal party with matching robes from Plum Pretty Sugar for that extra touch of stylish comfort. The girls sipped Veuve Cliquot mimosas and noshed on gourmet snacks while getting ready. Marion was dressed in her classically elegant Vera Wang Luxe “Esther” gown from L’Atelier Bridal Couture. Marion and the ladies were personally styled by the owner, Amanda Kautt, before they were all whisked away to the church.

Following a traditional service, the wedding guests were led out of the church by a traditional bagpiper (honoring Marion’s Scottish heritage) and lined the majestic front stairs of St. Mark’s Cathedral for a celebratory send off as the just-married couple made their way to the 1956 Bentley S-1. The formal service now over, Marion transformed her dress by removing the lace jacket overlay which gave her a simple strapless silhouette suitable for dozens of congratulatory hugs (and the 90+ degree July temps!).

When it came to wedding details, Marion and David wanted to combine traditional wedding elements with thoughtful, personal details. The couple worked with Paperista owner Antoinette Ramos who designed a classic engraved gold monogram that tied together all the paper goods. Each engraved invitation included this stunning monogram and was personalized with a hand-calligraphed die-cut card and wrapped with a silk dupioni ribbon. The place cards echoed this design, each hand-calligraphed place card wrapping around a menu with gold engraved lettering. For the desert, Marion and David worked closely with Cocoa & Fig’s owner Laurie Pyle to design a five-tier wedding cake adorned with a cascade of fresh flowers and accented with “lace” frosting detail inspired by Marion’s gown.

Guests signed in with a Velvet Raptor guest book decorated with the couple’s monogram. The dining tables were punctuated by lush, classically white and pale pink tone centerpieces created by Jackie Just of Just Bloomed. Low arrangements of garden roses, hydrangea, and luscious peonies were balanced against stunning high floral pieces anchored on a dramatic crystal candelabras.

Following dinner and toasts the couple literally danced the night away, treating guests to an unforgettable musical performance from the Utah band Party Crashers complete with a Michael Jackson impersonator. The dance floor was still
completely full when it was time to send off the newlyweds. Guests lined up with sparklers, fitting for the 4th of July holiday, to light the way as Marion and David hopped on transportation leading to their after party hosted at Graves 601 Cosmos bar.

The couple enjoyed a honeymoon in Italy, touring Positano, Ravello and Tuscany.

School Themed Valentine’s Day Shoot

Oh, young love.  The days of Jr. High dances, passing notes and singing along earnestly to the newest Bryan Adams’ love song… I think we can all agree, Valentine’s Day was sooo awesome back then.  So this darling school-themed shoot from Jody SavageCocoa & FigSimply Loves and Paperista is, well… basically the best thing ever.  See it all right here.

From Jody Savage Photography My stylist Shauna from Simply Loves and I wanted to design a shoot around the upcoming Valentine’s Day. We got to thinking about young love and when we were in school and received cute valentines from the boys we had crushes on and the idea for the shoot was born- centered around young, hopeful, innocent love.

We incorporated paper Valentine bags like when we were kids, but brought a sophisticated modern twist to it with the help of stationary extraordinaire Paperista. Overall we were going for a muted, romantic palate, not just the typical red or pink. We loved the light blue wedding gown Morgan was wearing and highlighted it with the invites and French ribbon on the table. Brent’s suit brought in the colors and textures in the invitations, flowers and ribbon.

We also wanted to bring in a bit of fun with the school theme by bringing in a chalkboard, desk, and globes. However, we played up the Valentine’s theme by adding a lovely backdrop of ribbon and bunting to reminisce about the school yard pretend marriages we had during recess- again with a sophisticated, romantic twist. We added chocolate hearts and tulips to surprise our lovely bride like many receive on Valentine’s Day from their loves.

Finally our table was just gorgeous and tied it in all together with the chalkboard slate table top, valentines bags on each place setting, chalkboard designs and beautiful flowers by the very talented Ashley Fox Designs.

And to top it all off Cocoa & Fig provided us with a number of different yummy desserts including macaroons, heart shaped pies, sugar cookies and a lovely icy white cake to go with our winter in Minnesota.

Surprise 40th Birthday Party

I’m one of those people that sort of tries to pretend like my birthday doesn’t exist. The only surprise party I’ve ever had was when I turned 16 years old and my friends decorated my new car in maxi pads. I know! Anyway, I think that my tunes are a-changing after devouring this absolutely beautiful, girly goodness of a party that was hosted by some of the most talented wedding ladies around at White Peacock Styled Events! Click here to see the whole gallery with images by La De Da Photography.

We wanted to throw a chic surprise 40th birthday party, giving the classic girly tea party a sophisticated spin while transforming an unassuming space into something extraordinary. We used a white color palette to make everything feel crisp and elevated, while having soft frills of tassels around the room and small pops of pastel pinks and gold. We decided on hosting it at L’atelier Couture Bridal Boutique which is not only stunning in itself, but allowed us to be surrounded by white gowns galore!

We set a formal dining table in the middle of the space and draped tassels from the ceiling to create a grand entrance. The room’s celebratory look was topped off with several white paddle balloons floating throughout the space. The brick walls contrasted perfectly with our feminine decor, making the whole place feel city chic rather than over-the-top. We made sure our table setting was decadent, placing individual bottles of rose wine at each spot, with a place-card tag attached to each bottle. Gold accents were used in the table settings and we simply spread the center of the table with florals.

We served classic tea party fare, including scones, chicken salad and various tea sandwiches. Draping a beautiful flower garland over the birthday girl’s chair made her place extra special! A couple of different stations were placed around the rest of the room, including a tea bar for hot sips, a bubble bar stocked with champagne, and dessert tables full of cake and French macaroons. We had all of the guests dress in white to continue the girly, opulent feel of the party. These instructions were found on the party invitations, which were hand-delivered to each guests home. The invitations were written on scrolls and attached to a gorgeous frilloon (paddle balloon with tassels), brought to each girl’s door.

Everything came to life when the birthday girl arrived. She was overwhelmed by the space and the gathering of her dear friends. We gave her a flowered crown, popped some bubbly, and enjoyed the soiree to the utmost!

Minnesota Winter Wedding from Paper Antler Photography

So I might be the most unpopular person in the the blogosphere for this…but I’m fully looking forward to winter. Because to be totally honest, I’m the kind of girl who’d prefer cozying up by the fireplace to laying out on the beach any day of the week. Crazy. I know. So when my favorites from Paper Antler sent over this elegant winter wedding in the dead of summer, it felt a little like Christmas morning. And if you happen to be a cold weather lover like me, I’m oh-so-certain you’ll be happy spending this August day right here.

From the Bride… My family’s home holds some of my most precious memories so we chose its country setting to set the tone for our wedding.  We paired this country house inspiration with our reception’s formal lakeside ballroom to create our French Country Formal theme.  The colors were held together by warm cream tones mixed with muted gold, as well as greyed blues and pinks.  We incorporated rich fabrics – a grandmother’s fur, velvet seats in a family sleigh, and brocaded lace.  To bring the “country” into our ballroom setting, we found handcrafted wood farm tables and adorned them with loads of votive candles next to reflective pieces – silver candelabras, gold vases, and mercury glass.  To soften the tables, we introduced full florals – heirloom English garden roses, hydrangeas, peonies and hints of soft greens.
