From the Bride… Mark and I met as sophomores at Colgate University. Within weeks we were dating and we never looked back. Almost six years later we got engaged and knew we wanted a fall wedding. It’s our favorite season and usually brings beautiful weather to New Jersey. I had never given a ton of thought to what I’d wanted my wedding to be like, but I had always pictured it outside. We were thrilled when we found The Park Savoy Estate and they had a fall day available that would work for our closest family and friends: September 21, 2013. Okay, technically it’s the last day of summer, but the end of September is always fall in my mind. They have a beautiful series of gardens overlooking the rolling hills of a golf course perfectly set up for an outdoor wedding.

Early on in the planning process we realized we just really wanted to celebrate our marriage with a big, fun party for our family and friends. Good food, drinks, and music were top priorities (along with a great photographer, Carmen Santorelli, to capture it all – what can I say, I’ve always love pictures). We couldn’t have been happier with the service we got from The Park Savoy Estate. Thankfully, despite a bit of a gray, foggy morning the weather turned out to be lovely and we were able to hold the ceremony outside. The food and drinks were incredible and never seemed to end. Our band, The Wedding Crashers, were also amazing and played plenty of the slightly goofy songs we had requested. It was fitting for the mood of the day. Although our venue was elegant and romantic (as was the occasion), we have a playful side and I think that came through throughout the day. From the beginning (with references to Meatloaf’s ‘Paradise by the Dashboard Light’ in our wedding ceremony) to the end (shenanigans on the dance floor), the day was very “us.” It really was a perfect way to start the rest of our lives together.

From the stunning bride… Mike and I met in our freshman year of college but didn’t start dating until 4 years after we graduated! After two years of dating, Mike surprised me by proposing on the beach during our annual family trip to north carolina with his grandmothers beautiful 1939 vintage engagement ring. Needless to say, this beautiful ring became the inspiration for all of our wedding plans.

Our venue was the perfect example of vintage romance with beautiful dim lighting and a romantic feel with wooden bookshelves and walls. We wanted every little detail to have a story behind it and for all our guests to feel the love that we had for each other and our families. Pink is my favorite color and I always knew that I wanted to use it in my wedding color scheme. Since we were getting married in the fall, I thought a dusty rose pink would be perfect addition to gold and ivory tones. It was important to me as an event planner to make sure that my guests felt the love and romance in the room and of course, notice all of our personal touches.

To incorporate my husbands Native American culture and his birth name which means “maker of good arrows” we used a wire arrow cake topper which we spray painted gold. Because we were getting married the weekend before Thanksgiving, we thought it would be fun to incorporate breakable wishbones as escort card holders which we also spray painted gold. My grandmother, a seamstress, made my beautiful veil which we hope to pass down to my sisters and cousins in the years to come.

We wanted our centerpieces to be beautifully simple with different shades of pink peonies, ranunculus, dahlia’s and astilbe flowers. On our family vacations to North Carolina, we always drink Bulliet Bourbon and thought it would be fun to ask our family members to help us collect bottles so that we could use them as vases in our centerpieces. In addition to the bourbon bottles, we added a mix of regular and quilted mason jars for a vintage flair. To add some gold tones to the mix, we used clear glass votive candles and painted the rims with gold glitter along with hand painted oval mirrors which were used as table numbers.

One of my most favorite parts of the day was seeing mike for our first look! I was nervous that it would make our ceremony less memorable but seeing him beforehand calmed my nerves so much and allowed us to have some private moments of happiness before the craziness of the day began! Listening to our two amazing Spanish guitar players during cocktail hour was absolutely wonderful as a surprise to our guests and especially to my grandparents who were born and raised in Puerto Rico. In the end our wedding was full of love and warmth and we even had some snow flurries that night to make the night even more special.

My advice for all brides, especially DIY brides is too have faith in your vision and the choices you make, it’s your day and if you love it, so will everyone else!!! Also, don’t get caught up in making everything perfect, take some shortcuts for the small things and take time for the things people will remember.

From the Bride… For me, growing up has been defined by laid back, fun-filled summers on the Jersey shore. For Jason, leaving Brooklyn during the summer months to spend time in “nature” has helped him stay centered and balanced. Given our busy day-to-day routine in the city, it seemed only appropriate to part ways with the hustle and bustle of the Big Apple to spend our wedding weekend in favor of the calm and serenity of Barnegat Bay.

Bonnet Island Estate was the perfect backdrop for our big day. The venue embodies the easy elegance we had imagined. The forecast had been calling for rain, but low and behold the rain held out, and just in time for our ceremony the clouds parted and the sun came out (perhaps a gift from our angels on the other side who were undoubtedly with us that day). As we looked into each other’s eyes and read the vows we had written for each other in the lovely, sun-drenched boathouse chapel, it truly felt like we were inside of a dream.

It was important to us that all through the day, people knew they were at OUR wedding. Guests later pointed out the little touches throughout which reminded them of where they were, such as our ceremony musicians playing “Across the Universe”, the poem “Captain Corelli’s Mandolin”, which served as our first reading, the reference to “the great contemporary poet Method Man” in Jason’s vows, the extensive ice cream sundae & dessert bar (because who doesn’t love ice cream?!), the blueberry jam favors my grandmothers, mother, aunt, & I made, the 15 pizzas we had delivered to the venue AFTER the wedding… because the party just couldn’t (& didn’t) end when the reception ended! Perhaps most obviously “us”, was our hilarious surprise choreographed first dance that we must have practiced a hundred times (it was so difficult to keep it a secret!)… we really hammed it up & succeeded in having our guests in stitches.

My advice to any bride is simply this: enjoy this experience. It is easy to get caught up in color combinations, menu tastings, and cake fillings… but at the end of the day, this is about your love, and sharing that love with all of your favorite people. Things are bound to go wrong here & there, but guess what? That’s okay! It’s your journey. On your wedding day, make sure you pause and take it in…all of these people are here for you, to celebrate with you! Your heart will be exploding with love, just as mine was the day I got to marry the love of my life, my best friend, my partner in crime… the most amazing man in the entire world, my husband. Remember, the best is yet to come.

DIY items or family heirlooms: handcrafted lace handkerchief gifted to the bride on her wedding day, after it was purchased by her parents in Burano, Italy, in anticipation of her big day, during a trip they took as a family seven years earlier. Wooden rosary wrapped around the bride’s bouquet, which belonged to her father, a reminder of his presence on her special day. Favors of blueberry jam, homemade by the bride, her mother, both of her grandmothers, & aunt, a labor of love and tribute to the town where the bride is originally from—famed for its’ delicious blueberries.
