Romantic Italian Wedding Inspiration

If you could evoke the essence of Italy in a wedding, this would be it. The lace veil alone has me dreaming of a medieval stone church tucked away in some Tuscan town. With Lana Ponomarenko Photography on hand to capture it all, abundant florals and a rustic tablescape transformed this Florida courtyard into an Italian villa.

From Lana Ponomarenko PhotographyI always was in love with intimate Italian weddings. Together with wedding designer Inna Olimpiyuk Events we tried to bring a little Italy to Florida :)

We wanted it to be relaxed, very personal and full of love – a big family celebration of marriage and happiness in a magical atmosphere. We envisioned a laid-back evening at family villa.

Beautiful flower arrangements were made of white sweet pea, honeysuckles, snowberries, and burgundy roses with olive branches wrapped with hand–dyed silk ribbons.

Elegant Boca Grande Spring Wedding

I’m enchanted by these Floridan colors; the pinks, greens and creams have me captivated. Dave Lapham captured every gorgeous shade at this elegant, yet relaxed, wedding, and Sixpence Productions made me not only feel like I personally know this couple, but wish that I had been there to celebrate with them. Sit back and enjoy this beautiful treat ahead and get ready to smile for the rest of the day.

From Sixpence Productions… Full disclosure, this gorgeous girl is my cousin Molly. She’s patient, affectionate, enthusiastic, smart, organized, and well-traveled. I could go on for days about how fabulous she is because I’m just that proud of Molly, and her sisters Laura and Emily. Molly’s perfect half came in the form of the handsome, intelligent, loving, thoughtful and sincere, Dustin. As maid of honor Emily, quotes their mother Mary in her speech, “They really are each others perfect compliment.” We lost Mary just six weeks before the wedding and this film is dedicated to her memory.

When I talk to couples before their wedding about hiring us, I tell them about how we focus on their friends and family rather than what I call “eye candy.” I consider eye candy to be all the gorgeous details and location shots which are nice to look at, but don’t really advance your story or add to the narrative. Boca Grande is my hometown, and in the early stages of editing this wedding film sneak peek, it looked like a love letter to Gasparilla Island with lots of beautiful details sprinkled in, rather than a story about Molly and Dustin, so I stopped, tore apart the edit, and focused on their story. At the end of the day, it’s not about my creative vision for a film. It’s about our couples. Molly’s sister Laura taught me that several years ago when I created her wedding film, and it’s shaped how I approach all my films to this day. I want to assure you, that this wedding had gobs of eye candy, but it belongs in their final film, not this sneak peek.

From the Bride… Ever since I was a little girl, I knew I wanted a Floridian wedding. Summer afternoons were spent dreaming up the details, and I would run around our home in Tampa Bay, sharing the palette, menu, and decor to anyone who would listen. My Mom used to joke that I had planned my wedding by age ten, but I couldn’t help but find inspiration in the colors and architecture of the “old Florida” that surrounded me. I loved the elegance, charm, and history, and often begged my Grandparents to share photos and stories of the St. Petersburg they once knew, fifty years ago. Despite a move to North Carolina, and to Columbus, Ohio soon thereafter, my heart still remained in Florida, with the vision of my wedding day painted with a Gulf of Mexico sunset.

Although Dustin and I met in Columbus, we spent a lot of time in Florida over the years, visiting my family in Tampa Bay, and his extended family in Polk County. When he proposed, it felt natural to pick Florida for the wedding, a place that’s so special to each of us, and a place that we have grown to love even more as we have experienced it together. We explored venues in my home town, but ultimately settled on a venue in a town newer to the two of us, but one very familiar to both of our families: Gasparilla Island. Boca Grande, the small town on the Island, was home to my Aunt, who started its first newspaper on the island, the Boca Beacon back in the 1970s. Dustin’s family grew up fishing in Boca Grande, and spent countless weekends exploring the island and its surrounding waters. Boca Grande is a true Floridian gem, abound with “old Florida” charm. It’s a rare place that’s been untouched for countless years, and one that we couldn’t wait to share with our guests on our wedding day.

We fell in love with the Boca Bay Pass Club and knew its views of the Gulf would be the perfect backdrop for a tented reception. We took inspiration from the venue’s surroundings, choosing classic decor that echoed the beauty of the island – shades of pink linens, floral arrangements of peonies and hydrangeas, whimsical calligraphy on signage and place cards. The Sperry Tent, adorned with a canopy of bistro lights, was one of my favorite details of the wedding, and (with the help of a beautiful April sunset!) helped create a stunning ambience for the reception. Floridian touches were scattered throughout the wedding – a menu highlighting Gulf Shrimp and Grouper, assorted pies from a nearby bakery, Boca Beacon newspapers layered in each welcome bag, hand drawn maps of the island passed out to each guest. Since many of our friends and family traveled long distances to Boca Grande, we wanted to ensure they fell in love with the island’s charm and simplicity, just as we had. Sarah Tucker’s guidance and support truly helped create a magical night for the two of us, and we could not be more thankful to our talented group of vendors that helped our vision come to life.

Coral Boca Grande Wedding

Have I told you lately that coral-splashed weddings own my heart? It’s true, they do. And when they come hand in hand with the cutest little flower girls, seashells and sand in your toes? I love them even more. Our friends at K and K Photography stood behind every pretty moment that sits in this sweet gallery and it’s all so, sooo lovely.

From the beautiful Bride… All the vendors we worked with were extremely helpful and did a fabulous job of helping us to plan an extraordinary event that our family and friends thoroughly enjoyed. Most importantly Mark and I had an incredibly special day that we will cherish the memories of for a lifetime.

Mark and I really wanted our children to be part of the ceremony so my daughter Tiffany was my maid of honor and his son Max was his best man. My son Zac also stood up for Mark and walked me down the aisle since my father passed away many years ago. Mark’s daughter Olivia and my Goddaughter Sydney also stood up for me. Neither Olivia nor Sydney had ever been flower girls when they were young so that is what they wanted to be in the wedding. This was perfect because we have two English Bulldogs, Bentley and Brutus, who are very much a part of our family so we made them ring bearers and had them walk down the aisle with the girls. I made their tuxes which was the perfect distraction during the wedding planning!

Boca Grande Wedding from Vitalic Photo

If we’re being totally honest here, I’ve never actually heard of Boca Grande (I know, shameful being a Gulf Coast resident myself), but after this gorgeous wedding it’s pretty much top of my vacation list right now. Vitalic Photo’s images of the day are something out of a dream – a really bright and happy dream – and they have totally convinced me to pack my flip flops and go!

From the photographer… Erin Leigh Littrell and Matthew David Turner’s destination wedding in Boca Grande was the perfect intimate affair on a July summer night. With most of their family and guests being from Oklahoma, the island was full of golf carts zipping around to the ceremony and reception. The quaint Baptist church and Gasparilla Inn Beach Club provided the perfect venues for a Florida West Coast wedding.

Boca Grande, Florida Wedding from K & K Photography

Preppy meets classic just might be my favorite combination ever.  Aside from the fact that they are both seriously gorgeous ways to style your day, it’s that feel of a classic celebration mixed with a dose of prepster whimsy that kind of takes a wedding from downright pretty to “oh my gosh, I’ve never seen something so amazing.”  And in the case of this stunning Boca Grande affair, it’s all of the aforementioned mixed with some of the sweetest details you will ever see, including beautiful bridesmaid frocks from Julie Brown Designs, fab paper goods from Dabney Lee and a whole host of breathtaking images from K&K Photography.  See them all in the full gallery.

From the Bride… We fell in love with Boca Grande when I surprised Justin with a weekend getaway at The Gasparilla Inn & Club for his 30th birthday. It was the most amazing, romantic place we had ever visited and we knew it was the perfect fit (even though we had already started planning our wedding in Maine). I am so happy that we chose a destination wedding because it allowed us to really spend time with our guests at the various events we planned (a cocktail party on Thursday, a golf tournament and a welcome dinner on Friday, and a brunch on Sunday), rather than frantically trying to visit with everyone in one night.

We wanted our wedding to feel like “us,” so we skipped lots of the traditions that didn’t feel right for the intimate night we had in mind (announcing the bride, groom, and the bridal party, the bouquet and garter toss, etc.). Instead, we focused on personal touches, like the salt favor escort cards that my mom and her girlfriends put together the morning of the wedding and the programs that we glued to painted wood so they would not blow away during our beachfront ceremony. The bridesmaid’s dresses were really the jumping off point for the “look” we were going for, and one of my best friends designed the amazing invitations, menus and table numbers to go with our theme. For the dinner, we wanted everyone to feel like they were at an intimate dinner party rather than a typical wedding reception. We chose long feasting tables covered in clustered floral arrangements and tons of candles and mercury glass that my mom and I found months before. The real icing on the cake was our DJ, Jonathan Cortez, singing live throughout dinner. It was so special and enchanting. I remember walking into that room, with all of the candles and the lit fire, and looking at Justin and feeling overwhelmed with the beauty of it all and the love that I felt for him.

It is amazing how fast the night flew by, but we are so thankful to Jeff at K&K Photography for capturing every moment. He is so incredibly talented and has such a natural ability to capture every moment while also making everyone feel comfortable and at ease. We feel so blessed that so many of our friends and family were able to come celebrate with us, and we are just so thrilled to start the next chapter of our lives together!
