Romantic Cliffside Wedding at La Venta Inn

I’m a sucker for a good romance, especially those chance meetings that should have, could have happened years prior.  This, loves, is one of those stories, and it’s all culminating in a drop-dead gorgeous cliffside wedding at La Venta Inn.  Think romantic blush hues, lush blooms from Flowers By Laurel and vintage goodness from Found Vintage Rentals.  See it all captured by Melvin Gilbert right here.

From the Bride… Although my husband, Scott, and I grew up and went to high school about a mile apart, we didn’t meet until we both attended a mutual friend’s birthday party when we were 30. The party took place in Santa Monica, where we had both lived for years, but never met. We felt so lucky to have finally found each other, and spent the first year of our relationship getting to know one another and exploring the beautiful beach cities that surrounded us. Other than a love of the beach, another common thread that drew us closer was a mutual love of music. We relished listening to new albums for the first time and going to concerts by bands and performers we loved. So when it came time to plan on our wedding, there were two things we knew we wanted to involve: the ocean and music.

The second we walked into the ballroom at the La Venta Inn, we knew we had found our venue. Perched high on the cliffs of Palos Verdes, the stunning ocean view brought tears to my eyes. Choosing our venue was the very first thing we did… and the rest of our wedding seemed to fall into place from there. Given our mutual love of music, we decided to go with a vintage “Music & Memories” theme for our wedding. For “Music,” we used sheet music accents on everything we could: our guest book, ceremony programs, menus, table numbers, banner signs and escort cards. For “Memories,” we went with a Polaroid guest book to capture the looks on our guests’ faces as they entered our wedding, and a photo booth to capture moments of fun as they unfolded. And for the grand finale, our cinematographers put together an amazing Same-Day-Edit, which we showed our guests as a surprise on a screen overlooking the twinkling lights of the city below.

We didn’t have a wedding planner, but we did have a ton of help from family, friends and the good old internet. One of my bridesmaids accompanied me to the famous Fairfax High Flea Market where we picked up the beautiful vintage suitcases, picture frames and perfume trays that were displayed throughout the venue. I bought the chalkboard signs displayed in the courtyard on Craigslist and Etsy, and my mom and I wrote out all of the signage. I went to the Found Vintage Rentals warehouse and picked out all of the vintage furniture displayed throughout our venue. Our guest book, escort cards and flower girl dresses were all hand-made by various vendors I found on Etsy. And the table numbers, ceremony programs, and menus I designed and bought on Zazzle. Although planning our wedding ourselves was stressful at times, the payoff was more than I ever could of imagined. There was a moment during dinner when I turned to my husband at our sweetheart table, tapped him on shoulder and told him to look out over the dining room. Our guests were buzzing with conversation, the room was glowing with candle light, and I remember saying: “I can’t believe this is our wedding…everything looks so beautiful!” I don’t think it gets much better than that.

From Lindsay, the Bride… Having both grown up in Palos Verdes, my fiance Matt and I felt destined to get married in the same place we met as children 20 years prior. We had spent our youth playing along those cliffs, so it was truly a dream come true to look each other in the eye and promise our love to one another in a place with so much history and such a big part of our story.

I called the wedding Gypsy by the Sea. I wanted an eclectic mix of vintage gypsy with a country seaside in England. This way we could bring in elements of the country – lanterns, vintage colored glassware from Casa De Perrin and organic elements like rust, wood and home-made honey – all the while combining a colorful “gypset” feeling inspired by the ocean with watercolors, satin ribbons and colorful crystals. I wore a vintage inspired dress called The Butterfly, a custom made vintage-like veil and a caplet to match each from Parisian designer Les Habitudes.

Having my own branding agency, Social Gypsy, my favorite part of the process is telling a story. In this story, we wanted to capture the elements of the sun and the ocean, a “yin and a yang” that represents Matt and I. Our incredible wedding planner Hallie Slade, from La Boheme Events, did a wonderful job helping us create this. We wanted to bring in elements of the earth with lots of wood, lit candles and wild flowers since we are both so fond of nature. Holly Flora blew us away by creating inspired floral arrangements – using wild flowers, succulents and gorgeous light tones all held in brass antique vases. They also brought tons of colored glass candleholders that reflected warm colorful light everywhere. We rented an old farmhouse table for the head table and dressed it with a gorgeous hand made watercolor table runner created by Bramble Workshop. One of our songs was Here Comes the Sun (thank goodness it was sunny that day) and Prim and Pixie created tote bags to match for guests with the image of a large sun over the blue ocean.

For invitations I wanted something that would capture the essence of where we were getting married. Terranea has gorgeous sunsets over the ocean. We painted watercolors, which we then incorporated into the invitations with the very talented Prim and Pixie, along with menus and place cards to match. For the table cards we went with an ombre design inspired by the horizon at sunset joining the ocean. They were delicately placed on a rustic wooden door.

The dress was champagne, which went perfectly with my rose gold diamond and ruby wedding band and his rose gold band custom designed by Kathy Rose of Roseark (she also made my engagement ring). I found the perfect Jimmy Choo heels that added some flair to the dress, earrings and a clutch from Roseark and I wore a vintage diamond and gold bracelet given to my grandmother by my grandfather on her wedding day. Shannon Kim Hair did an ethereal loose side bun with soft braids and each bridesmaid had a braid-do of her choosing. Kerry Malouf Make-up did a gorgeous glowing “no make-up,” make-up look, while Gina Mari’ Skincare prepped my skin for months leading up to the date with a special bridal skincare routine so I wouldn’t have to wear too much make-up. The bridesmaids wore dusty rose, hand selected Roseark earrings with jackets and shawls of their choice. I wore two jackets through out the evening, a vintage rabbit fur passed down from my mother and a maroon rock inspired vintage jacket I found at my favorite store, Déjà Vu in Sun Valley, ID.

It was a magical evening (captured on camera by the very talented Rebecca Fishman of Birds of a Feather) that flew by. We danced the night away to The James Gang band. Fresh flowers were delicately placed on the delicious multi-flavored cake by Jamaica Cakes. Guests also had the opportunity to spend time in the tented outdoor lounge that we created to look like a swanky Parisian hideaway with couches, starry lights, a bar and meaningful keepsakes that we placed on furniture from Found Vintage Rentals. It was a Gypsy by the Sea’s fairy tale for both of us, and a night we will never forget.

From Blissfully Illuminated Fine Art Photography… Capturing the love between Marissa and Davin on their wedding day was such a joy! After shooting their urbex engagement, we couldnt wait to see their beautiful wedding would be like.

M + D chose the Wayfarers Chapel in Racho Palos Verdes, California to say their I do’s. Seated on the cliffs of the Pacific Ocean in a garden of young redwoods, the glass chapel was designed by Llyod Wright to be natural sanctuary. Marissas elegant lace wedding gown paired with the modern and romantic architecture of the chapel was breathtaking!

Their reception was held at the Cabrillo Marina in San Pedro. The bride and groom shared their vision with their friend and designer, Liz Mahlo, who brought the marina to life with bold colors and patterns, vintage props, and one of our favorite decorations – the ribbon divider! Marissa shared one of the sweetest dances with her father while her brother played a ukulele version of Butterfly Kisses. Twinkling lights strung across the courtyard amplified the romance of the evening, and laughter and silly dancing filled the dance floor. As the sun set and the moon rose higher, Davin serenaded his wifey under the stars with his guitar, with friends and family singing along. All of the love in the air pointed to one thing the love between M+D is brings great joy to everyone around them, and they will surely be missed! The happy couple departed the next day for their honey-move to Hawaii, where they will make their new home together. We couldn’t be happier for them! Mahalo, and blessings, to M+D!
