Sunset Inspired Newport Wedding

There’s no such thing as too much pink, especially when said hue comes in the form of a Vera Wang gown, luxe Wildflower Linens, and an ombre aisle draped with florals. The sky was the limit for this sunset affair and Victoria Canada Weddings & Events coordinated every detail. With a confetti station and bubbly bar tossed into the mix, I’m saving this Gavin Wade gallery as one of my favs.

From Victoria Canada Weddings & EventsWhere to begin…we had SO much fun helping to create this fabulous Newport wedding with Brooke and Patrick, everything about it was perfection!

We first met Brooke’s family a few years ago when we planned her older sister’s wedding. Families as sweet as them do not come along often and when we heard that Brooke and Patrick were engaged, we could not contain our excitement and instantly began brainstorming.

Brooke and Patrick “PA” met in Arizona where they grew up. PA was the cute older high school friend of Brooke’s older sister. Eventually Brooke’s infectious smile and bubbly personality caught his eye and the rest was history.

As Brooke was growing up, her family vacationed in Newport Beach. As soon as she stepped foot on the Pelican Hill Property as a little girl, she knew she wanted to get married at The Resort at Pelican Hill. We loved how special this venue was to her, and we were immediately inspired by the change of scenery.

The view of the Pacific Coast from the resort is undoubtedly one of the most gorgeous features and this was something we knew right away we wanted to focus on throughout the planning process. Because the ceremony was shortly before sunset, the vibrant colors that show up in the sky were a natural choice for the color palette! With the Newport sunset on our minds, we collaborated with Nisie’s Enchanted Florist to create floral in various hues of pink, orange, and white.

The draped rotunda gave the ceremony space plenty of drama but because you can never have too many flowers(!) we added some rose petals and pomander balls down the aisle, as well as larger arrangements. To add a modern element, the arrangements were placed on mirrored boxes that matched the natural essence of the lawn.

Brooke and PA are such a fun and easy-going couple and we wanted to make sure they had plenty of elements throughout their wedding that matched their personalities. Instead of just writing their own vows, they decided to each write ten things they loved about each other. This moment became even more special when everyone realized many of the things they each picked were the same!

After they read their vows they put them in a wine box to open up together sometime in the future. Instead of using the typical wine box, we chose a clear acrylic box. Their names and date were monogrammed on the box and for some added fun; we placed the wine bottle on a bed of gold and pink glitter! Brooke is a girl who firmly believes “you can never have too much glitter” and we incorporated it wherever we could!! Once they were finally announced husband and wife, their guests celebrated by tossing confetti and rose petals they had acquired from the confetti bar at the start of the ceremony. What a way to start your marriage with beautiful petals and confetti raining down with huge grins on your faces!

Cocktails were the focus of the next hour with refreshing signature drinks with names like “Newport Sunset” and a Bubbly Bar with a slew of delicious options! A white Manzanita tree used for seating cards was a focal point and as a subtle tie to the destination, white coral was placed on some tables as décor.

Guests were welcomed into a ballroom for dinner and dancing and because this was the first time the guests were inside, we wanted to make sure it didn’t disappoint. Flowers were found throughout the entire ballroom, whether it was the floral chandelier hanging over the dance floor, the chair bands, or the single rose at every guest’s place setting. The linen on the guest tables had a subtle floral pattern and we incorporated the same design on the custom round dance floor. To highlight the head table, we used a mirrored tabletop and paired it with fabric dining chairs for a luxurious and comfortable look!

Later in the night, a surprise after party area was opened and the real party continued. A second dance floor and a photo area kept the guests entertained all night; only slowing down to grab some lobster corn dogs or a mini grilled cheese.

The bride and groom rode off into the night in the Pelican Hill Bentley to start their journey together!

From The Bride…It’s all about the details! When small, unique details come together it makes for a one of a kind event and that is exactly what I wanted for my wedding. Patrick and I wanted our wedding to be somewhat monochromatic with the floral being the pop of color. Often times we referred to our floral as “after sunset” because of the orange, coral, and pink flowers.
One design element I especially loved was the mirrored head table; it made a huge statement in the room. Candlelight was reflective creating amazing lighting and many different floral arrangements brought the whole table together.

The confetti toss at the end of the ceremony was my favorite moment. As the guests arrived they were faced with a confetti bar. Guests could create their own mix of different kinds of confetti to toss as we walked down the aisle.

I enjoyed the entire day and couldn’t have dreamed of a more perfect day!

From The Bride…The vision for the wedding was to have a beautiful and comforting feel. I wanted the wedding to feel like a getaway for people. I chose warm tones of gold and cream and I found that Pelican hill, with its beautiful wooden chandeliers and the natural scenery worked very well with my theme. The floral arrangements had a natural elegance to them, and included hanging greenery to go with the more the theme of natural and elegant.

I like that we had the view of the ocean but it was still private. The food and service were impeccable.

The ceremony was probably what made this venue so unique. The rotunda and ocean view were spectacular. My bridesmaids and the groomsmen walked to Clair de Lune, which has a really special place in both Drew and my hearts as we see it describing the beginning of our relationship. I walked down the aisle with my father. The aisle was littered with white rose pedals. Drew and I wrote our own vows and at one point he even teared up while reading them to me!!

The reception was so fun and there was a TON of food… We had lobster and steak for dinner with two delicious kinds of wedding cake to follow, a cheese course and then of course, the waffle station opened up for a late night snack (which no one needed, I’m sure) we got the waffle idea because I’m from Belgium and the waffles came from a client of mine, Bruxie! They were delicious. I loved the speeches that my family and drew’s family gave. It was amazing to see the courage my dad showed, because he is not particularly fond of public speaking. Most of all, it was amazing having all of our family and friends together in one place and having such an amazing time together.

The wedding cake was 5 layers and had flowers cascading down. Originally we were going to do sugar flowers, but decided that real flowers would probably better reflect the idea. I got the idea from looking at some other wedding cakes and I think it went well with the natural theme.

Macaroons with gold dust were our party favors for the guests.

We honeymooned to Greece, Italy, Israel and Turkey. We went on a Silversea cruise which was amazing. Our favorite spot was Santorini

I did not want to get too confused by spending a lot of time on my wedding gown shopping, so I very quickly narrowed the search to Monique L’Huillier. I initially had chosen a dress from her Bliss line, but once I tried on her couture line, I couldn’t go back… I essentially had a one of a kind dress because it was a two piece gown, which a lace bodice and a satin a-line skirt with the draping that she is famous for. I bought it at the Monique L’Huillier store on Melrose.

Jimmy choo shoes and veil was from BHLDN. My jewelery was all “borrowed” from my mother or grandmother, who have beautiful diamond pieces that have been in my family for years. My “new” was a beautiful pendant made by my uncle that I wore around my neck which had a picture of my sister etched into the white gold and surrounded by diamonds. My sister passed away at the young age of 21 in January 2012.

Men’s warehouse designed the groom’s attire.

Amsale designed the bridesmaid’s attire, they wore the vanilla color which went really well with the theme.

From Brooke Keegan Weddings and EventsWhen Maggie and Thomas were looking for the perfect wedding venue, they stumbled upon Pelican Hill and fell in love with the resort and the stunning views of the ocean.  Maggie’s vision came to life with the help of so many wonderful vendors.  She wanted a very elegant and pretty wedding in the light pastel colors.  Angelica Strings played as the guests arrived, during the Ceremony and Cocktail Hour.  Holly Flora did a beautiful job on the Ceremony flowers as well as the groupings on the dining tables. Not one table was exactly the same.   Lighten Up, Inc. created the perfect ambient lighting, Chiavari Chair Rentals provided the Fruitwood Chiavari chairs and the linens were from La Tavola Fine Linens.  The Rick Cowling Band rocked all night and every single guest was on the dance floor for hours! Since the Groom is from the South, they had to have Koozies at the bar for the beer and a Crawfish Groom’s Cake!  It was a beautiful December wedding!

Pelican Hill Wedding from The Special Day

When you live 10,000 miles away from your I-do destination and the first time you see your venue is two weeks before your wedding, planning becomes a bit more of adventure. This adorable couple didn’t bat an eyelash at the distance and put their faith in the talented ladies of The Special Day to bring their vibrant, California celebration to life. With nods to two special cities, their wedding was dripping with perfect purple and pink orchids and sophisticated style. Now, before you take off to see all the beautiful images from KLK Photography, make sure you read the story from the bride, some seriously good advice for those of you getting ready to make the trip down the aisle. Ok, nooow you can explore even more right here.

From the bride… As it turns out, what happens in Vegas…definitely does NOT stay in Vegas! Kevin and I met while working at the same company in fabulous Las Vegas, where I was interning as a grad student. What started as a fun summer romance turned into much more when summer became fall, and it was time for me to return to school in California. I was skeptical of the long distance, particularly given that we had met in Vegas (baby). But Kevin proved me otherwise by showing up at my doorstep in California every weekend for two months straight, to demonstrate that all it takes is commitment and faith! Thereafter, we were inseparable, splitting our weekends between Palo Alto and Vegas. Fast forward – after graduation I moved full-time to Las Vegas, a year later Kevin popped the question, and then as a newly-engaged couple we made a huge move overseas to Singapore! I love to joke that Kevin is the only man who could convince this fair-weather California girl to move to both the arid desert of Vegas as well as the rainy tropics of Southeast Asia!

We had the usual logistical planning challenges of an ex-pat couple living 10,000 miles from the wedding location, but with the help of my local parents and amazing coordinator Sophia, we planned the entire thing abroad without returning state-side until two weeks before the wedding, giving us time to get over jet lag and finalize last minute details (oh, and have one last bachelorette hurrah in Vegas with my ladies). We even chose our venue without an in-person visit – but let’s be honest, one only needs to see photos of the Resort at Pelican Hill and its stunning ocean vistas, and you can spot its perfection immediately! Kevin and I wanted elements of our Big Day to be as colorful, bold and modern as the city where we met, so we chose a vibrant statement palette of shades of purple with accents of magenta, and finished off the look with mirrors and glass for some extra class. We brought the tropics of Singapore to the affair through placement of the beautiful Orchid flower, which united our invitations, menus, centerpieces, the cake, and to this day the loveliest bridal bouquet I’ve seen in my entire life. Even our signature cocktails reflected our unique cities of residence where we shaped our partnership – we served the historical “Singapore Sling” and “Vegas, Baby” (which was actually a Cosmopolitan).

I suppose many of our guests were surprised (confused?) when Kevin, myself and our bridal party would spontaneously burst into song a few times throughout the event, but it all made sense to them at the reception when we unveiled a fun “Same Day Edit” music video showcasing the day, set to Train’s “Hey, Soul Sister.” I admit I secretly wish I were a rock star, and when I heard of this cool Rock n’ Roll Same Day Edit option from our videographers, Elysium Productions, I asked my camera-shy hubby-to-be if he would consider doing it. Unexpectedly, he obliged! Kevin, who cannot memorize lyrics to save his life and was nervous enough about the wedding, enlisted the help of his groomsmen until the wee hours of the morning at the hotel bar the night before the wedding, who quizzed him on such whimsical song lyrics as “Your lipstick stains on the front lobe of my left side brain…”. All I can say is…what a keeper!

The day came together beautifully, though I have to admit I was quite an indecisive bride throughout the planning process. At one point, I even started to doubt the festive color scheme we had chosen, for fear that years down the line I would look at our album and the style would be far from “timeless.” But my oh-so-wise maid of honor convinced me otherwise, reminding me that what matters most is to showcase the elements we love TODAY, to capture the emotions of NOW, and to take an unforgettable snapshot of our lives as they are, in this very moment.
