Unique Ideas for Kids at Weddings

Call me crazy, but the best weddings I’ve been to have had little ones as guests. The sweetest flower girls and most handsome ring bearers all dressed up in adorable outfits, ready to party. Thanks to the stylings of Sweetheart Events, we’ve got a gallery of inspiring ideas to keep the kiddos not only lookin’ good, but entertained as well. Kelly Brown Photographer captured ALL the cuteness here.

Al Fresco

From Sweetheart Events… With a love of rustic charm, stunning nature backdrops and all things cute I was inspired to do something a little different. Instead of focusing on the bride and groom I wanted to focus my attention on the little ones that attend weddings. Children attending weddings is a matter of opinion; however, I love having children at weddings. They bring a sense of silliness, humour and those special moments that you remember for a lifetime. They are the flower girl or the ring bearer where they get a mere few seconds of attention as they walk down the aisle.

We had Kelly Brown Photographer capturing every detail to perfection. Together with Bespoke Décor Rentals, we brought on a team of Vancouver professionals to collaborate with and showcase the idea of children attending weddings in hopes to inspire future couples on fun ideas they can do their little guests and keep them entertained.

Bespoke Décor Rentals has an entire inventory focused on rustic charm, vintage treasures and unique children props for any event including this incredible John Deer truck and flat bed that we used for the children’s buffet filled with chicken fingers and fries, mac and cheese, veggies, popcorn and cake in a jar for dessert (Wow, right?). Our colour palette was grey, yellow, white and green. We wanted to incorporate the beauty of Southlands Riding Club located in Vancouver, BC and use the acres of property and horse trails as our backdrop.

We started off with invites addressed to the children specifically asking them to wear their best dress or bow tie, bring their pj’s and be prepared for a day of fun. We put together a kids only table with a wooden bench and white floral arrangements with yellow and green lollipops. On the place setting- each child’s names spelled out with cookies, an I Spy game and a custom made pinwheel. Tin Can Studio, a lovely retro camper, came on board to create our children’s activity center filled with games, crafts and red tricycles that later transformed into a slumber party filled with fun Ikea cloud pillows, fluffy white blankets and twinkly lights. We created an option for outdoor weddings where there may not be a bed to put the kids to sleep in and allow the parents to continue the party late into the night. This was such a fun option to create!

Tiny Mr. and Bijou Baby, both local children attire retailers based out of Vancouver, dressed our models. Our girls wore the Siena and Angelina dresses, head jewels and babies breath crowns to complete the look and our boys were dressed with dark grey pants, suspenders, white collar shirts, bow ties and a fedora finished off with a tiger finger puppet boutonniere (adorable).

We added a children’s signature lemonade in glass milk jars with grey and white striped straws that the children swooned over and adorable children size ice cream parlor chairs to create a space that made children feel welcome.

Floral Filled Bridal Shower in Vancouver

When I was asked what I envisioned for my bridal shower many moons ago, the answer was flowers – a sea of them. Nothing says bridal quite like loads of pastel blooms and this Vancouver shower is out to prove just that. It’s a tea infused, flower filled party held at the Bride’s studio, Chandelier Wedding, along with the help of super crafty vendors like Written Word Calligraphy, Hello Sunshine Cake Studio and Nadia Hung. Click here for even more.

From the bride… What more fun than having loving and creative friends who are willing to style your bridal shower together? It is my childhood dream to be a creative business owner so hosting this bridal shower at my very own Chandelier Wedding’s Studio Monet was especially meaningful. Every girlfriend who attended this party has been my biggest cheerleader since the beginning of this new endeavor. And it is through this new journey, I developed a very special friendship with Nadia (from Nadia Hung Photography) and Karla (from Written Word Calligraphy). When I shared with the two lovelies my idea of hosting a floral workshop bridal shower, they said “Yes, let’s make it happen!” without second thoughts. It was so fun to have them involved in making this bridal shower so beautiful. It was also a wonderful opportunity to share my greatest passion with my close ones!

Nadia captured this pastel and airy soiree perfectly with tons of laughers and smiles. Karla created a set of soft peach colored stationery to match my pastel colored blooms and vintage teacups. I also have to extend a big thank you to Kristine of Hellosunshine Cake Studio for her gorgeous cake and J&S Catering for the delicate gourmet odeuvre. Every detail of this bridal shower is so perfect that it brings me to tears looking back at the pictures.

Intimate Wedding at Starling Lane Winery

With a palette of pretty pastels, the creative geniuses at Platinum Floral Design set the scene for an intimate wedding at Starling Lane Winery. The couple wanted a vintage feel with some personal touches, so the DIY welcome sign, table numbers, and escort cards were the perfect additions to the affair. From The Bride…We wanted our wedding to be warm, personal and most of all fun. We had an intimate guest list of very close friends and family. We wanted to be able to enjoy all of the people that were there. We live in Vancouver but both of our families live on Vancouver Island so we decided to have the wedding in Victoria. We really wanted a vintage feel to the wedding and wanted to be out doors, and when we looked at Starling Lane Winery we thought it was perfect. The feel of it was exactly what we were looking for. I had no specific colour palette in mind. I just wanted a lovely mix of pastels and Platinum Floral Designs took it from there. The flowers were gorgeous. I had some friends comment that it was the prettiest wedding that they had been to. Tammy from Blue Lily did a wonderful job in setting up the reception and ceremony along with my florist.

A few special touches to the wedding were the local guitar player we had for the ceremony and cocktails. We hired Brad Prevederos, from Victoria to play acoustic guitar for the ceremony and back ground music for after the ceremony. After the ceremony we had lemonade, sandwiches and cookies as well as wine tasting for the guests. We also had home made caramel corn from my aunt to snack on. As we wanted a small wedding my nine year old niece was my maid of honour, and my 6 year old niece the flower girl. My 3 year old nephew was the ring bearer. My husband’s dad was his best man. To add to the vintage feel, my husband made a corn hole game for guests and kids to play, we also had croquet and some other games.

At the reception we had a “coca-cola” toast to thank our guests instead of a champagne toast as Justin doesn’t drink but loves Coke. So everyone was given a small glass coke bottle to toast with. We also built our own smores station out of a planter that we stained to give it a vintage feel. We also had as a candy bar, which included macaroon’s from Bon Macaroon in Victoria. The smores and macaroons were a huge hit with the guests.

We had some very special people help us with personal touches as well. One of my best friends is a very talented baker and cake decorator so she made our cake for us, which turned out beautiful. My dad is a painter, so we asked him to create our guest book for us. He painted a tree for us to use as our guest book and have guest stamp a thumb print and sign their name.

I made the ring box from a wooden box that I picked up at the dollar store. I stained it with the same stain that we used for the Smore’s station. I made the table numbers myself with wine corks and hand painted the numbers on card stock. The welcome sign that we used at the ceremony was an old mirror from my parent’s basement that I painted and turned into a chalk board. My sister used some old fencing to make a sign that read “Nelson 9-15-13” with a heart painted on it. I found a vintage window pane and hand painted escort cards to hang from it for guests to find their table number. We also rented vintage books from Victoria Vintage China to use as part of the table scaped floral arrangements that my amazing florist set up for us.

My dress and sash were from the amazing ladies at The White Peony in Victoria. My head band and earrings were also from The White Peony. My shoes were from Davids Bridal. I had them dyed blue for a pop of colour. My husband’s suit was purchased at Moore’s

Our wedding day went off with out a hitch. It turned out absolutely wonderful. It was everything we wanted it to be. It was warm, relaxed, intimate and cheerful, but most of all, we had fun.
