Happy Halloween SMP Canada! We love any reason to celebrate around these parts, and today we get to toast to Halloween in style thanks to this fabulous shoot from Claudette Marie Events. Every image from Christy Swanberg makes me wish I had enough foresight to throw a party this year, but instead I’ll just spend the day celebrating right here.

… We decided to not do a typical outside rustic wedding shoot, but to keep in with the current season and create a classy table setting with a Halloween theme. Christy, our very talented photographer, found the perfect location in Fish Creek Provincial Park, by a very menacing looking tree. It’s long drooping branches created the perfect frame around the photos. We used mostly black and gold with pops of green and purple for the colour pallet. We found the cute little burlap bags and decided to add them into the shoot as they worked well with the outdoor setting. The champagne glasses were a DIY project and worked better than expected which is always a bonus! We really liked the contrast between the sequined linens and the long dry grass.
Because we were using a lot of black for the chairs and linens, we didn’t want to go with a typical menu with black writing. We used a paper bag backing, which again added that rustic feel to the shoot, but printed in white ink on a solid black card stock to make it pop a little more. We wanted to bring in a fun element to the shoot so incorporated the use of the skeleton hands to hold the menus and the golden skulls for added decor elements. The striped chair and sign also were an interesting addition. I think I would enjoy having a Halloween feast at this party!

From Blair Marie Photography… Everything about Vivienne + Dave’s wedding was handmade by the couple themselves. They spent hours on inspiring wedding websites planning all the DIY’s they were going to do for the big day, and enlisted the helping hands of their bridal party to complete them. The brides dress was purchased and then altered to her liking by a family friend, the cookies baked by a friend, the succulent table centres planted by the bride herself, every single detail they dreamed up and created. Vivienne even painted the cake toppers and made all of the pompoms surrounding the venue.
It was a perfect day, with the forecast calling for rain, we crossed our fingers and checked the weather network every single day leading up to August 3, 2013. When the day finally arrived, not a single drop of rain fell! We had perfect weather for the outdoor wedding afternoon wedding taking place at the Glenmore Sailing Club, and a beautiful warm evening.
It was truly a celebration of love and family, as Vivienne and Dave have been together for many years, their lives already intertwined. It was a small and intimate wedding with their closest friends and family attending, some flying from as far as Venezuela to be there. Heartfelt speeches and a wicked dance party starting at 7pm (Venezuela time) made the party as perfect as the rest of the day.
Once the speeches were finished and the dance party drawing to a close, I stole the couple away to take some photos in the evening light off a dock near the water, it was a perfect opportunity for the two of them to be with one another and enjoy the moment.

From the Bride… Shaun and I met in college, and after four years of dating, he romantically proposed during a trip to Saint Lucia! Cue the wedding planning!
Our Wedding Day began early. Many of our friends and family members had stayed at the hotel with us. The men of the wedding party went to set up the chairs at Baker Park while the ladies started the long (and fun!) process of hair, makeup and dressing! When I arrived at Baker Park the guests were all huddled in the beautiful mist under their umbrellas! It was an unusually cold and rainy day for August. Once everyone was seated, the rain and mist stopped – the entire ceremony was free of rain! We were serenaded by a wonderful harpist as I tearfully, yet excitedly walked down the aisle. It was an intimate civil ceremony on the banks of the Bow River, and was incredibly special to both of us.
Now that everyone was headed back to the hotel to warm up, it was time for photos. We couldn’t have asked for a more organized and talented photographer! We popped a bottle of champagne to keep warm in the forest-like park setting! Our photos were what we like to call “Urban Woodland”. Calgary features many, picturesque and cozy forest-like settings. To show our love of our city, and highlight our cozy reception venue (The Amsterdam Rhino Pub) we had additional photos in an urban setting as well!
As guests and the wedding party arrived at our cozy, dimly-lit reception venue, they were greeted with a glass of champagne to loosen up. The evening and night continued with a fantastic plated meal, speeches and of course, dancing! We couldn’t have asked for a better group of friends, family and vendors to share our special day with. It was perfect!
