Cinco de Mayo Dinner Party

With the weather on the rise, outdoor fetes on the horizon, and Cinco de Mayo here in full force, it just made sense for us to revisit one of our favourite themed parties to date. Though we originally entitled this event a Mexican Fiesta when we threw it last summer, it's feels totally Cinco de Mayo-esque! Complete...

The Ultimate Margarita Round-Up

We're all friends here, right? Which means you won't judge me when I confess that I'm somewhat of a margarita junkie. Shaken, stired, blended... I don't discriminate. And seeing as it's Cinco de Mayo and all, it only seemed fair to pull together a margarita bar of sorts. From cajun spiced to perfectly nice, here are just a handful of my very favourite versions. Cheers, friends!

Best Ever Guacamole + Roasted Tomatillo Salsa

Happy Cinco de Mayo dear SMPers! As you all know, we take celebrations (and food) pretty seriously around here. So much so that we resurrected some of our favourite Mexican inspired dishes solely for this occasion. And if I'm being honest, I'd happily sustain myself on Abby's guacamole and Yours Truly's roasted salsa, for the rest of my days! So if you missed em' the first time, nows your chance... 3 Ripe Avocados...

Guava Sangria

I happen to be a sangria girl through and through. I'm unsure if it's the sweet vs. tart combo that's won my heart, or the fact that it goes hand and hand with particularly wonderful evenings (think: Mexican date nights with my mister or catch up sessions with girlfriends). But in my mind, sangria = magic. And ONEHOPE's guava version, which arrived...

DIY Papel Picado Coasters

Okay, okay, so I know we went totally over the top with the whole papel picado thing, but when you give brightly coloured tissue paper and a pair of scissors to a bunch of creative ladies, their inner craft goddesses simply emerge. And can you really blame us? The results are just so stinking cute that we simply couldn't help ourselves. These coasters were great for our party, but they also add that little...

DIY Paper Flowers

So Abby's all about the papel picado bunting (which was glorious in it's own right!), but for me? It's the paper flowers. As far as I'm concerned, they became the star of the show (apart from...

DIY Papel Picado Bunting

For me, the prettiest part of our Mexican Fiesta was the Papel Picado bunting. It floated in the breeze and totally set the tone for our easy, effortless, totally inviting dinner. And believe it or not, it's not a hard project to tackle. Remember those paper snowflakes you used to make as a kid? It basically the same thing. But prettier! Tissue paper Masking tape Scotch tape...

Best Ever Guacamole

I've been making guacamole for as long as I can remember. With lime and smashed garlic and those gorgeous black avocados (Hass) that turn all creamy and good once you mix everything in. Well, those perfect avocados aren't always round these parts of New England so when we were planning our Mexican inspired party we used whatever avocado we could find. The texture of the green ones (Gwen, Pinkerton and Reed) is a bit grainier and doesn't quite come out as smooth (unless they are SUPER ripe) but...

Homemade Tortillas

Living in New England, I've discovered how very boring supermarket tortillas can be. They are no where near the soft, fluffy varieties that I grew up with and for lack of a better description, are merely vehicles to hold the goodness inside. So imagine if that vehicle was like the mercedes of tortillas. A bit thicker than you might expect, soft, full of flavor and so addicting you might find yourself in the kitchen at 2AM slathering them with butter and devouring them right up. Yeah, these are...

Pink Margarita Recipe

There is this restaurant near my parents house where you can get a  $.99 cent margarita and I kid you not, it's the best damn drink you've ever had in your life. So good that it's the first and only stop I want to make on the way home from the airport. We even threw my son's 1st birthday at this very restaurant. I know...sad and awesome at the same time. Anyway, when my daughter discovered that she could guzzle pink lemonade like it's water, I simultaneously discovered that with a little of...

Roasted Tomatillo Salsa

It's Friday afternoon, the sun is shining and we've got roasted tomatillo salsa on our plates. If that's not reason to celebrate, well, I just don't know what is. I do, however, know for certain that Melissa's fabulous recipe is calling your name. Yep, it's spicy, savoury, celebratory goodness in salsa form, folks. And with that, we bid you the...
