DIY Ombre Tassel Pillow

Once we spotted this ombré tassel pillow over at M Loves M, we knew we absolutely had to make one for ourselves. We’re sure you’re seeing the tassel trend everywhere, and now you join in with this easy and inexpensive DIY project thanks to the ever so talented Mara! And, if you haven’t checked out M Loves M yet, what are you waiting for—you’re totally missing out!

Materials

18×18 pillow
embroidery floss (I picked 8 different colors, so I bought two packets per color. I made 4 tassels per color for a total of 32. Whoa that’s a mouthful. Let me know if it makes sense!)
needle & white thread

instructions

step-1

Cut out a piece of cardboard with a width equal to the length you want your tassel to be. I just eyeballed it and made it about 1.5-2 inches wide. Wrap embroidery floss around cardboard a set number of times. By keeping it the same, you’ll ensure that you have equal thickness. I did about 25 rotations around for my pillow and then cut off excess. I’ll save it for another craft project!

step-2

Cut a 4 inch piece of floss and tie and knot it at one end of the loop you created.

step-3

Cut the strands at the other end of your loop and then place the cardboard piece aside.

step-4

Using another 4 inch strand, tie a knot near the top of the tassel. Trim any excess. I made 32 tassels for this project, eight on each side of the pillow.

step-5

To add tassels to a pillow, sew through the top knot of tassel into the edge of pillow until secure.

Anne of Green Gables Inspired Baby Shower

Kristy Rice, the huge talent behind Momental Designs, set out to shower her childhood friend with a day crafted around their shared love of the Anne of Green Gable series. From book favors with hand-painted covers to the narrative of Anne beautifully woven into each and every detail (including a fab cake table), this is a stunning modern spin on a childhood classic all captured by Danielle Coons.

A few highlights:

  •  A modern twist on Anne of Green Gables at Terrain in Philadelphia
  • Individually hand painted stationery throughout including artfully redesigned book covers for guest gifting and custom laser cut invitation details
  • All elements of the decor tied directly to narrative from the Anne of Green Gables Book
  • Three cakes with artwork installation inspired by passages from the book

Kristy and Amy have been best friends since grade school and to this day they share a love for the Anne of Green Gables series by LM Montgomery. When it came time to vision a baby shower for Amy, Kristy knew exactly where to turn. Every element of decor and stationery was inspired by specific scenes from the tale of Anne, a precocious red-head orphan in the 1800’s. Kristy set out to give the look a decidedly modern spin amidst the flowery language of Montgomery’s narrative.

Invitations were meant to be a gift for each guest and included a set of four art prints bundled together with the signature Momental Lacy laser cut bellyband. The invitation itself was hand brushed with blush and sage inks atop a pebble textured, blush cardstock.

Menus were mounted to mini chalkboards and if any of you know the Anne story, you’ll certainly know the significance of the chalkboard!

Guests went home with there very own copy of the book, refashioned with a watercolor floral cover hand painted with thickly applied brushstrokes in white.

The flower installation was inspired by a scene from the movie adaptation of Anne of Green Gables where two of the central characters take a buggy ride through a dogwood laden lane of shimmering white blooms. Papertini Floral suspended clouds of baby’s breath and other blooms above each guest table.

A series of three cakes each created after a humorous passage in the Anne of Green Gables book. Plum Cardamom, Raspberry Cream and a Classic Carrot were divine. Large 5 foot tall art prints hung behind each cake.

White Paint Go-To’s

Picking paint is so hard. I’m indecisive by nature and then you add in the multitude of choices or the fact that it never ever looks like it does on that itty bitty paint chip. Which is why I rely heavily on great recommendations. And oh have we got them. These are tried and true white paint colors that work from designers that we love and their projects that we’ve favorited time and again.
