This modern, neutral space is a total dream. And that dream works for baby boys AND baby girls and is anything but boring. Designed by Megan Opel Interiors for her sweet little guy, Oliver, it's stuffed to the gills with animals, great reading material and layers of cozy textures. I had so much fun decorating my son Oliver’s nursery. The rest of my home is full of bright colors and vintage pieces, but deep down I wanted to do something totally different in the nursery because it an enclosed space off the rest of the house. So I chose to go with a clean, modern scheme with lots of grey, taupe, black, and white and touches of natural wood, faux fur, stars, and stripes, which will be appropriate for both boys and girls in years to come. And let’s be honest – this is totally my “mom cave” so the calming palette was 100% intended for me! However, I do love how the book covers in the bookcase add a nice splash of color. I adore zoo animals in baby's rooms so I threw in some elephant, giraffe, zebra, and lion accents, plus a few deer heads in there for good measure because who doesn’t love a good deer head?

The nursery is a mix of pieces I already owned, gifts from family and friends, DIY projects, secondhand Craigslist items, IKEA and Target bargains, and a few name-brand items. I tried not to buy anything at full retail price because that’s just against my religion but I also wanted to stay focused on my scheme. So I woke up every morning and scoured Chicago-area Craigslist, shopped sales and used coupons, rewards certificates, and credit card points whenever I could. I also have to credit my amazing husband for installing everything!
