My daughter is turning 6 in a few months. And her favorite books are Barbie and My Little Pony and other crazy girly, sort of flimsy stories that she can tote around with her. I miss the days of those classic tales that can keep mommies and babies alike entertained night after night. And perhaps even inspire an entire birthday party! For my daughter’s 2nd birthday party, we wanted to keep it intimate and meaningful for her since she’s starting to understand who the special people in her life are and things that actually matter to her. We chose the book The Paper Bag Princess by Robert Munsch as the theme because it’s her favourite book to read at bedtime and also the first book where she is able to recite lines. Inspired by the book, we made the décor out of paper and used yellow, white and gold for the colour theme. The backdrop was the illustration from the last page of the book painted on Kraft paper, the banner was also hand constructed along with the tissue paper tassels.
For the sweet table, the centerpiece was the 2-tiered fondant castle, complete with the dragon and a paper bag princess resembling my daughter. The inside of the cake was my daughter’s favourite flavour, rainbow confetti cake with strawberry buttercream icing. The cupcakes were the same flavour with vanilla buttercream icing topped with the princess’ crown. The butter cookies were hand stamped with quotes from the book that my daughter recites, we really liked this personal touch. These were also accompanied with some other lemon flavoured goodies, like zesty lemon cake pops, meringue kisses and homemade fresh lemonade.
