Have you met Hilary of Dean Street Society? Because, though she may not know it yet, she’s my new best friend.  I will admit I’ve been living under a rock as I only recently found her blog, but I’ve since made up for the fact by wasting many an hour pouring through it. The girl is hilarious and SO stylish. A must-read, must-follow for sure! And she’s here today sharing her 5 fashion must-haves…

A go-to dress. Whether you get a last minute invite to drinks or a work event or are just in a mad dash trying to get ready, a dress that fits you beautifully is the easiest sure thing to throw on. Pair it with a few accessories and you’re done! I was never a green girl myself, but this lace shift from Asos surprised me by feeling so “me” and is now one of my staples.

Bright shoes. The easiest way to take an outfit from casual to chic, is to change up your shoes! Suddenly jeans and a cheeky sweater feel fashion forward. Plus bright shoes are a remarkable detail {worthy of remarking upon} that adds that final polish to a look at takes it to the next level. I scored these tangerine heels for about $30 in the post-Christmas sales in London and am shocked to find how much they work with in my closet!

A clutch that pops. If I’m going out and bringing a clutch, it probably means I’m not going to put it down throughout the night, but carry it with me. Thus it’s an accessory you’ll wear all night and a great way to add color or pattern to a little black dress, or in this case a modern pairing to an otherwise very vintage look. This one from Etsy is actually an iPad case! I use it for that purpose at conferences or as a clutch for happy hours, and the little snap at the top lets you hang it on a finger so you can balance a cocktail in that hand and have the other free to shake hello — voila!

Stripes! Bonus points if they’re black and white. Stripes go with everything. Almost any other pattern — plaid, polka dots, animal print, florals — pairs back to this print for super fun combinations. Furthermore black and white goes with everything, meaning a skirt like this has oh so many options when it comes to my tops and sweaters to pair it with. I found this darling one via Keep.com.

A bow tie! Alright, this might not be a “must have”, but I do think every woman should have a few creative pieces that go outside the box. I love stealing my beau’s bowties and wearing them as a headband, left hanging around the neck like a necklace, or in place of a belt as pictured here. If the tie isn’t quite long enough, consider having your tailor sew two together or extend it in the back with another cool piece of fabric. The favorite in my collection is this black and gold number from the gents at Brier and Moss.
