We dove deep on all things business with Erika from Small Shop a few hours ago, but honestly? It was her home that I literally couldn’t tear myself away from – with every last detail thinking “that’s SO ME!” So we wanted to spend some time with the the fabulous blogger learning a little bit more about her damn near perfect taste and her gorgeous home.

SMP: What room do you love the most and why?

That is a tough one! Right now I’m all about my bedroom, because it’s the last room I completed! I was able to make a drastic change just by switching out the accessories: a new mirror, lamp, floor-to-ceiling linen drapes, a cowhide thrown over the headboard, crisp white bedding and my splurge item, the Tom Dixon copper pendant. Start with your foundation pieces that are stylistically basic and well-made, and have fun with the rest!

SMP: What inspires your decor style?

When decorating my home, I try to follow my “5 Pieces” rule: making sure I have at least one piece each that’s textured/patterned, shiny, modern, organic, and vintage. I find when I stick to this formula I am most happy with the overall result!

SMP: What is your favorite item in your home?

My grandparents’ mid-century modern teak buffet that my grandfather shipped all the way from Hawaii a few years ago. It even came with my grandmother’s vintage gold-rimmed hand-painted china set from Japan – a family treasure that I’ll pass on to my daughter!

SMP: As a mom that runs her business from home with two one little kid, I’m dying to know how you transformed your space into one that can carry the weight for both business and family?

Even though I’ve struggled with accessorizing our living room, I tell ya, that enormous charcoal gray sectional has been a trooper! The Jonathan Adler two-tiered coffee table has been a sturdy, functional piece for us as well. And believe it or not, the white leather dining room chairs are surprisingly very easy to clean. Wood floors are also key! And no food or drink on my vintage beni ourain rug – that’s a big no-no in the house.

SMP: What are your favorite sources for home accessories?

I try to mix high with low, and new with vintage. While I may splurge on one item in each room (like the Tom Dixon copper pendant in the master bedroom, or the Saarinen tulip side table in the living room), I’ll mix that with well-designed accessories from Target, HomeGoods, Z Gallerie, West Elm, Nate Berkus and DwellStudio. But I have really lucked out with a few vintage finds from thrift stores — like the brass etagere and brass mushroom lamps in my office!

SMP: How would you describe your personal style?

I believe in dressing your home as you would yourself. It can take some time to find the style you feel most comfortable in, but I have found much inspiration in my three muses in both of these areas: Kelly Wearstler, Kate Moss and Emmanuelle Alt (the three names on the pillow in my office!). I’d say they all embody the style of the “Modern Woman” — unfussy, strong, to-the-point, with just enough touches of edge and glam to keep it feminine.

SMP: Okay, our quickfire round…what’s your best tip for balancing work and personal life?

That it’s ok to say “no” every once in a while. I think if we take on things we don’t want to do, we become resentful — and that’s not fair to the other parties involved. That’s not to say you shouldn’t challenge yourself, but learn how much you can actually do, and do that well (I’m still learning!).

SMP: Stranded on a desert island…what’s the one cocktail you would take with you?

Dirty vodka martini, very dirty (with a big straw hat and glammy sunnies).

SMP: What color do you think will stand the test of trend time?

Black is always the new black!

SMP: One thing every style savvy homeowner should have?

One “splurgy” piece that you have coveted for a while – it makes you smile every time you enter a room. I recently bought myself the Tom Dixon copper pendant for our master bedroom, and I think it takes the entire space to the next level!
