I e-met Janie Medley about 6 and a half years ago. She was launching The Bride’s Cafe and I was plugging along with Style Me Pretty. And through the 6 years, we’ve sort of grown up together. Her thriving floral business and blog and her pure, unabashed kindness always taking center stage. And although I can easily call her a friend, until recently we had never met. So when she walked backstage at a presentation in Richmond Virginia that I was doing and gave me a big bear hug and a beautiful smile – then she showed me the table that she crafted with Courtney at Merriment Events – well, I knew that we would be life long blogmates. Just take a peak for yourself.
From Courtney & Janie… The inspiration for our table started with a greeting card we found at Quirk Gallery – a bright, punchy heart in the most lovely shade of florescent pink. We immediately thought of orange and yellow — the perfect, happy complement for such a pretty shade of pink. Our table was a collaboration between Janie Medley of JM Flora Design and The Bride’s Cafe, Courtney Spencer of Merriment Events, and Chrissy Triano of Sweet Spot Candy in Richmond, Virginia for Artful Wedding, an annual wedding showcase at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts, where Abby spoke this year!
To design our table, we used a standard white rental linen as our base. Over it, we layered a vibrant ikat pattern fabric found locally at Williams-Sherrill (a fabric mecca!). Making your own overlay for a table is the easiest way to make your table your own. And you don’t need to know how to sew to do it! Simply “seam” the edges of fabric using stitch-witchery (a fusible, iron-on bond).
On top of our rich ikat pattern, we layered candy in shades of pink, orange and yellow — old-fashioned orange slices and new-fashioned grapefruit slices; lemon, cotton candy and sunkist jelly beans; yellow and pink mint nonpareils. We commissioned a simple, but elegant fondant-covered cake from Candy Valley Cake Company and studded the top with a star-stopper coral charm peony. Janie arranged whimsical ranunculus and dramatic parrott tulips next to delicate sweet peas, but of course the coral charm peonies are the queen bee of the composition!
Back to the heart greeting cards that started it all — Jen Maton of If So Inklined calligraphy penned signs in whimsical, bright-white lettering. For a little bit of metallic sparkle, we spray painted flower frogs gold to hold the cards (an idea that could easily translate to table numbers at a wedding!). Taper candles in orange and yellow complemented the bright blooms, and as a final touch, we painted a vintage chiavari chair in the pretties shade of salmon pink.
Our good friends, Jodi and Kurt of Jodi Miller Photography were on hand to take these wonderful photographs!
