Our Behind the Blog collection is bar none my favorite series we’ve ever done on SMP. As bloggers ourselves, we spend large amounts of our day alone with nothing more than our thoughts and our trusty computers. So finding kinship in other like-minded bloggers has been sort of like a breath of fresh Spring air…filled with soul and style and more inspiration than we could ever imagine. So when the adorable Leah of Freutcake agreed to be photographed – by our amazingly talented friend Bryce Covey no less – and share a bit of her blogging wisdom, well, it was like we were right there with her. Toasting to macarons and lattes and the wonderful world of being a blogger.
SMP: Some words you live by?
LB: Two sayings come to mind: “Be kind to everyone”, and “It’s always better to be overdressed than underdressed.”
SMP: Any guilty pleasures?
LB: Ice cream, salty-buttered popcorn and a nice glass of red wine. Not all at the same time of course. That would be very guilty.
SMP: What did you think your dream job was before your dream job found you?
LB: I wanted Helen Hunt’s job in the movie What Women Want. The idea of being a New York creative ad executive was super romantic.
SMP: What’s your favorite quote that describes your creative process?
LB: “Visions are worth fighting for. Why spend your life making someone else’s dreams?” – Tim Burton
SMP: If you could do it all over again, would you change anything?
LB: Ask me when I’m 100…but the answer will probably be no.
SMP: What is one piece of advice you would give to a blogger just starting out?
LB: Taking it all too seriously and comparing yourself to others will only kill your creative fire. Stay true to yourself and have fun with it.
SMP: What is your favorite item in your home?
LB: Can I categorize my husband Jason as an item? The photos from our wedding day.
SMP: What’s your best tip for balancing work and personal life?
LB: Yikes, that’s a hard one! If I need a day off from blogging I take one. I never pressure myself to create when it’s not coming to me. The best ideas come after a delicious dinner, a day with my husband or just sleeping in for a little longer. I love life so I live it and work fits itself in as well.
SMP: What was the tipping point in your business that made you feel like your blog was going to thrive?
LB: I wait for that tipping point everyday! I think that if you get comfortable, you will loose your edge.
SMP: What is the hardest lesson in business you’ve ever learned?
LB: When to say ‘no’ to an opportunity or client.
SMP: Stranded on a desert island question… what’s the one cocktail you would take with you?
LB: A classic gin & tonic with lots of extra limes for snacking on if necessary. Never underestimate a good cocktail garnish.
SMP: What color do you think will stand the test of trend time?
LB: Black, gold, and red lips.
SMP: One thing every style savvy homeowner should have?
LB: From what I have heard from my homeowner friends, I would say a good lawnmower. As for me, I am hoping to have a fabulous bar one day.
SMP: If you could buy yourself a single gift of any cost, what would it be?
LB: A trip to Paris with all the bells and whistles.
