There are glamourous weddings, and there are rustic weddings. Traditional weddings and totally eclectic weddings. And then there are weddings that prettiness beckons us in from the very beginning. Whose total being is fabulously fun; weddings with heart. Those weddings are some of our absolute favorite, and Orangerie Events is a pro at throwing those weddings. The story starts like the beginning of every good fairy tale… kegs and parties. We started dating shortly after I confessed to his roommate I had crush on him during a party at our alma mater, Virginia Tech. The next 9 years were filled with a whirlwind of courtship, long distance, and unconditional love. The conventional idea of dating was thrown to the wind when I joined the Peace Corps and was whisked away to Botswana. After almost 2 years of being in Botswana Eric flew over and proposed. As we were in the final stretches of our long distance affair we decided on the date 5-5-12. It had a ring to it and well how can you argue with Cinco de Mayo? We decided to embrace the Mexican flair and continue our international love with a vintage Mexican inspired wedding. We wanted the details to be discreet and personal. Thanks to Orangerie Events, Priscilla Erwin and I were able to collaborate on a culmination of creative touches to enhance the day. Almost all the details were handmade by ourselves… talk about a bonding experience.

Every aspect of the day was personalized and fun. We kicked off the arrival of guests with a champagne and beer happy hour with the programs conveniently attached to the stems of the glasses. The guests signed a picnic bench, which was handmade by Priscilla’s father, and took their table card from a vintage hardware store rack. Guests were encouraged to bring their cocktails to the ceremony for a toast announcing us as husband and wife. The ceremony was officiated by Eric’s uncle and all the readings were done by family members, one from each side of the family. The alter for the ceremony was a cocktail height table made by my brother and a ginormous lantern with 2ft tall candles. Threatened with a thunderstorm we quickly transitioned to the reception held at the same venue, set over a lawn. The centerpieces were collections of antique bottles, Mexican tiles, planted succulents, and hundreds of candles. Dominating the center of the lawn was a rustic farm table with seating for 34 people including all of our aunts, uncles, and both immediate families.

The day was perfect. From the Cigar Area, lounge, piles of homemade cookies, Mexican Tile Wedding Cake and farm grown food, I wouldn’t change a single thing.
