Wedding Details by Bombus

When I find a really great Etsy designer, like Angela at Cotton Bird Designs, I love to check out their favorite sellers. I found this next Etsy artist by perusing Angela's list of favorite items. I loooooove these decoupage pieces by Bombus...

Okay, the handmade envelopes made out of vintage atlas maps and vintage garden books are just too great. Perfect for whimsical thank you notes. The cut-out hearts would make great escort cards by simply writing your guests names in a dark, bold ink. I love the journal. It's so pretty and a great way to document your guests' well wishes and words of wisdom.

Inspiration

When people ask me what I write about...I simply say "Inspiration." Whether it's a wedding that is completely over-the-top or a sweet backyard affair, I try to only feature work that I find truly inspiring. I try to feature work that brides and grooms can pull from to create their own, personal wedding style. And, as cliche as it might sound...I truly do find inspiration all around me.

From pretty magazines and real weddings to the fresh picked peonies that my mother-in-law brought me, I find that I am constantly thinking of ideas and inspirations for Style Me Pretty. My latest addiction is Michele Michael...a prop stylist out of New York, whose work is so vibrant, so fresh and yet so real...

From Beth...

While every event I plan is so meaningful, this shower really touched my heart as it was in celebration of one of my best friend's Jen and her pending arrival of baby Collier. The locale was Kansas City and for those of you who haven't been there, this city is a surprising blend of arts, culture and just all around, good people. Being originally from KC, I immediately thought of a hidden herb garden in the downtown area cared for by the Blue Bird Bistro . Blue Bird is an organic cafe using only the freshest locally grown products and service to die for. While I'm not sure they knew what they were getting themselves into initially, they catered to every whim of a high-maintenance LA event planner as well as every craving of a soon-to-be mommy.
 
Now, Jen is a bit of a fashionista with impeccable taste, so while I plan weddings for some of the most discriminating brides in Southern California everyday, I was very nervous about meeting her standards. I wanted it to be unexpected, yet comfortable, all the while reflecting Jen's style. In the end, I went with a handmade, vintage feel for the overall event. With decor including handmade pillows and napkin treatments, hanging mason jars, vintage china and an eclectic mix of flowers and vases adorning the table.
 
The afternoon started with a cocktail hour of passed mimosas, wine and tropical iced tea. Passed appetizers included only Jen's favorites such as mini burgers, macaroni and cheese and pad thai in peanut sauce. The ladies chit chatted, laughed and took full advantage of the makeshift photobooth set up in the corner of the garden. Props such as pom-poms, cowboy hats, feather boas and tiaras were a huge hit and helped create some great memories.
 
For lunch, we served a mix of locally grown greens, salmon and fresh made bread on top of turquoise pressed glass plates, which was paired with organic wine from the Robller vineyard in Southern Missouri. After lunch, the ladies showered Jen with gifts that reflected her style including rock-and-roll onesies and a custom-designed skateboard by local tattoo artist, Andrew Milko, a guy with amazing talent! Lunch ended with cupcakes from McLain's Bakery, a staple in the Kansas City community for over 50 years, and homemade pecan tarts.b

Real Wedding

When one of our readers, Monique, sent me pictures from her recent wedding, I fell completely in love. Granted, I only feature weddings that I love as much as my own on Style Me Pretty, but this one is particularly beautiful in an incredibly glamorous way. The wedding was held in Auckland New Zealand in an intimate, European inspired affair...

Monique has been sweet enough to share some of the details and inspiration with us...

I met Ben 7 years ago when we both worked together at a local restaurant...we were married this Autumn with a vintage, french cafe inspired wedding. We exchanged vows at a catholic cathedral located in the central city, then with 80 of our closest family and friends went on to our intimate reception at Mantells, a gorgeous European styled venue.

My color theme was a simple classical ivory and black with a touch of soft green, inspired by a black and ivory dotted ribbon which I incorporated into my invitations, menu, programmes and table settings. All of which I designed and made myself with a little help from my bridesmaids. My gifts were small takeaway boxes filled with homemade fudge and finished with the ribbon and the M & B emblem I designed, only costing about $1.50 each.  My table seating board was embellished with crystals and sat on a gilded gold stand ( An idea I got from Style me Pretty! )

My biggest splurge was my dress...a pure silk strapless dress by Jane Yeh adorned with swarovski crystals and an ostrich feather skirt, which was hand dyed ivory. My Bridesmaids dresses were inspired by the famous Marilyn Monroe dress and featured gorgeous pearl and swarovski broaches.

Oh, this wedding is so beautiful! Thank you so much to Monique and Ben for sharing their day with us!

Here are the oh-so-fabulous details that Amy and Aaron included in their wedding...

Modern gown – My gown, The Mansion, was from Lela Rose’s first bridal collection. The bejeweled neckline and muslin fabric were the perfect mix of organic couture that I was seeking and was fitting to our setting. Our wedding date was stitched in the hem in light blue. And it was so special to purchase the gown from a grade-school friend and client Elle Warren, who owns Warren Barron Bridal. Later in the year, we designed Lela’s new website after sending her a proposal full of photos from our big day!

Design your own materials — Aaron designed all of our printed materials. Letterpress was a must, so we enlisted Inky Lips Press for the printing. We also used Aaron’s photography (http://www.brandhatchery.com/clients/napa/napa07/) ( http://www.brandhatchery.com/clients/napa/napa06/) from our trips to Napa as the basis for the table cards, escort cards and save the date.

Tribute to family and friends — We wanted to give a nod to all of the married couples—family and friends—who inspired us to take the leap. We mailed an extra card with the RSVP asking married friends and family to send us photos from their big day. We scanned and converted all of the images to black and white and hung them on a tree where all of our guests could recount memories and share stories. We also used the photos on the back of our dinner menu and for a slide show at our rehearsal dinner, which took place at Artesa Winery.

Beyond the guest book  — We collect books, especially coffee table books. So when it came time to choose a guest book, we opted for a copy of Shades of the Vine, a beautiful tome published by Meadowood that now sits on our cocktail table.

Honor your grandmothersI carried white peonies, my late paternal grandmother’s favorite flower, from Julie’s Flowers. It was my way of making sure she was present. We reset my maternal grandmother’s engagement ring and I wore an antique pin on my bouquet from Aaron’s side of the family.

Non-traditional styleMy husband wears Pumas, jeans and t-shirts to work every day, so I knew he wouldn’t be in typical attire. He surprised me by wearing green Converse shoes to match the green polka dot tie from Ted Baker that we picked out together. And I surprised him with green striped cuff links the night before.

Gem friendMy friend Shelby Katz designed a gorgeous seed pearl necklace for my sister, my maid of honor, who wore a Nicole Miller cocktail dress (a frock she will actually wear again), and a smoky quartz necklace for my mother.

Beyond the bridal portraitInstead of the traditional bridal portrait, Aaron created a collage of black and white photos which hung in the entrance to the ballroom.

Handcrafted detailsAaron’s mom is a very talented seamstress. She designed the girls’ dresses, the ring pillow using Aaron’s great great grandmother’s handkerchief and the platinum fabric gift bags for the olive oil—our favorite--that we gave as gifts. She even sewed muslin bags for our invitations which was similar to the fabric of my gown. And my mom knitted an ivory silk shrug for me to wear with my dress later in the evening and to brunch the next morning.

Personal scentWe mailed boxes of Casa Blanca Lily candles—a personal favorite of mine—made by our friends at Mast-Peters Fine Candles to illuminate.

Real Wedding

We are featuring THE most gorgeous real wedding today, which was sent to me by one of our loyal readers, Amy. First, I wanted to introduce this lovely couple, as their "story" is just too cute to pass up...

Aaron and I met in July 2004 as volunteers of the Make-A-Wish Foundation. I was chairing the foundation’s black-tie fundraiser, Wish Night, Aaron was the Creative Director. After pouring over piles of my old children’s books, we settled on the theme “Once Upon a Wish,” all based around fairytales. And a fairytale year it was. We fell in love and raised $1 million. Since then, we have designed and built a new house, established The Brand Hatchery, our small but rapidly growing branding, advertising and interactive agency in Dallas, TX, and planned our wedding—together.

A bit more from Amy...

After our engagement. we flew to CA and drove more than 600 miles one weekend in search of the perfect setting. It wasn’t until we returned home that I found The Carneros Inn in Napa Valley online and booked it sight unseen. We also found our rockstar photographer, Tanja Lippert, online. We were married by one of my father’s best friends in the Inn’s Apple Orchard standing on a bed of white rose petals a few months later. We designed all of the details, but Wedding Coordinator Marie Rios of Creative Occasions made our vision possible.

Real Wedding

Today's real wedding was sent to me, along with the sweetest note in the world, by one of our readers. Myrha was married in a Filipino inspired ceremony where most of the details were do-it-yourself touches. I'll let Myrha share all of the lovely details with you, but here are some gorgeous images for you to devour...

From Myhra...

Before getting exposed to Style Me Pretty, I absolutely had no idea how to throw a wedding party. I thought, as long as I had a dress, there were venues and we could provide food, that was already it. But Style Me Pretty and InStyle Weddings Magazine showed me that there are so many options out there, so many themes to choose from, and it's so much fun to plan for a wedding. Our wedding turned out more than my husband and I expected it to be. It was such a fun and relaxed wedding! Not to mention downright affordable (we only spent about $8,000 total for the wedding). All your DIY features and inspiration boards had given me ideas I could never come up with, on my own. And your blog has inspired me to make our wedding memorable, and not lacking in character.

We only had 80 guests, so our venues were small and intimate. We are Catholic so our ceremony had to take place in a Catholic Church. We chose a small, white chapel in Tagaytay (a small high place 45 minutes away from Manila that has a breathtaking view of the Taal Volcano) for our vows, and a Country-themed inn for the reception (www.discoverycountrysuites.com). Our motif was Cerulean blue, with gold and textured off-white as accents (think brocade). We infused traditional Filipino elements like using Pineapple fiber for the fabric of my wedding dress (Piña, as we call it, has a nice Ivory shade to it). My husband's aunt made and embroidered it for us. We also gave traditional Filipiniana fans (embroidered Pineapple fabric on rich, dark Narra wood) to the members of our female entourage. To make the look cohesive, we monogrammed our stationeries (menu cards, misalettes, gift tags, table numbers) and seals. We also wrapped our giveaways -- $1.5 shawls from China, a gift from my sister-in -law -- in Cerulean blue wrappers and tied it in a gold ribbon (my mother-in- law I did this two weeks before the wedding).

There was also the labor of love. My sister and I designed the dresses for the female entourage. We bought the fabrics and had the dress made by a local dressmaker. Total cost is $25 per dress. I designed the Mint-to-Be wrappers in Photoshop and had them printed in a local digital printing store. My colleagues and I packaged the mints ourselves (on a sidenote -- and with pride -- I wrote the ingredients on the Mint-to-Be's: a spoonful of love, a sprinkle of magic, a dash of hope, a cup of respect, a slice of commitment, a drop of kindness and patience and a daily dose of endless hugs and kisses!). My sister and I printed the menu cards and misalette covers using her Print Gocco machine.

Our biggest expense was the food, we wanted our guests to go home full and happy. Since we only had 80 guests, we could afford to serve them a seven-course meal and to end it with a dessert buffet.

Again, thank you so much Abby. Your blog is an online bible for all bride-to-bes. Style Me Pretty has made me realize that "style begins where budget ends" is full of hogwash. All brides deserve the wedding of their dreams, but they definitely do not have to pay the high price of executing it. Your blog is a testament that elegance and style need not be expensive.

Eco-Chic Wedding by Violet Designs

The week is winding down and I figure what could be better than finishing it with a few more real weddings. If yesterday's wedding was sweet and sophisticated, this next wedding is vibrant and fresh in a beautifully organic way. The amazing florals were designed by Traci at Violet Designs in Boston...

The oh-so-cute bride, Miya, has offered to share some of the details from her wedding as well as little tidbits of advice that every bride will love...

When we first got engaged, we thought a lot about the kind of feel that we wanted for our wedding.  Essentially, it came down to the fact that we wanted a wedding that people would be excited to come to, and where we would have a chance to hang out with our friends and families for the weekend.  Since our families and friends are dispersed across the country, we wanted to find a place where people could spend time together without feeling like the wedding was overshadowing everything.  I also wanted to showcase my home state (California): this meant bright colors, a laid-back attitude, western and Asian influences, and, of course, concern for the environment. 

During the planning process, I was fairly adamant about my belief that an event like a wedding shouldn't be an excuse to abandon environmental ethics.  We used only 100% post-consumer content recycled paper, and we kept our paper consumption to a minimum by having people RSVP by email, and instead  of sending information about the area via mail, we replied to RSVPs with a guide to the wine country that we put together as a pdf attachment.  We also chose a venue that served local and organic food, and served fish and vegetarian options. That said, you can never make an event to this scale as environmentally friendly as you want, but you can certainly make little tweaks here and there (use soy candles instead of paraffin, use recycled or cotton paper, cut down on the paper that you use, use local and/or organic ingredients, rent from local companies) that can, added up, make a big difference. 

I also included a lot of DIY touches...I sewed the panels for the canopy that we were married under, I made the groomsmen's and bridesmen's ties, I made the jewelry for the bridesmaids and groomsmaid, made my veil, and designed and printed the invitations, programs, and favors.  My dad made the structure to hang the panels for the canopy out of bamboo that had grown in the front yard of my childhood home.

Though ceremonies are often overlooked, ours was very unique and very DIY.  Our great friend, appropriately named JC, agreed to marry us, and spend enormous amounts of time helping us plan the ceremony.  We wanted to honor the fact that marriages are not just between two people, but occur within a network of family and friends. Instead of having readings on the meaning of marriage, we had our family members speak about what they had learned in their marriages. We had advice from couples who had been married from less than a year to over thirty years.  Then, one at a time, they stood up again, and asked us whether we promised to uphold the advice that they had just given us.  For example, my parents' advice was...

"Continue to make time and space for fun in your everyday life together - keep looking for ways to be playful, as often as you can, and laugh until you fall over.  Be courageous for each other and together.  Remember that small, daily personal  acts of courage build a foundation to fall back upon when life gives you a choice requiring a lot of courage.  Be kind to one another.  Be generous in your offers to bring coffee in the morning and to give the first foot rub at night.  Bring home ice cream for no reason.  Hold your tongue if you are tired an cranky.  And remember that we are all just doing the best we can, even if it is hard to tell sometimes.  Most of all, just continue to be your wonderful selves and continue to believe in the mystery of love as it unfolds in its various forms for you over the years."  

Then the vow that they offered was...

"Do you promise to laugh until you fall over, to be courageous, to be extravagant with small kindnesses, and to trust in the mysteries of life and love as they unfold?"  

If I were to give one piece of advice to brides who are planning their weddings, it would be to think about what feel you want, and what your priorities are.  Once you nail these two things down, you can start to let go of the little things that people spend hundreds of hours obsessing about.  The feel that we aimed for was laid-back Californian, and our main priorities were that people feel at ease, and for the wedding to be fun. Once we had established that, the choice to hire a Hawaiian band to play before the ceremony and during our croquet/bocce cocktail hour was clear, as was the choice to forgo fancy napkins and crystal or not to have my hair/ make-up done. 

Once your feel and priorities are nailed down, you can also think about where to hold your ground and where you can be more flexible.  We received, as a wedding present, a photo booth for the reception.  There were more than a few people who thought that this was a terrible idea, and that we should be registering for as much china and for as many kitchen goods as we could.  The truth is, however, that we live in a tiny one-bedroom in Manhattan, and that we really have no use for china and kitchen goods past a certain point. I am glad that I stuck to my guns on this one, because the photos from that booth will be the first thing that I save if my house ever burns down. 

Nailing down a feel for your wedding and priorities also lets you pick vendors who will make your wedding spectacular.  I was very lucky to find Traci for a florist- she has a similar aesthetic as I do, and executed everything perfectly without me having to worry about whether her work would be right.  The minute I saw her portfolio, I knew that she would achieve the organic, fun vibe that I was aiming for. I was also drawn to the style of my photographer, Randy Parsons, as she tends to focus on the people at the wedding rather than the details.

The other thing that I would tell brides to be is to  remember that once you have a date picked, no matter what disasters happen leading up to or on the day of the wedding, you end up married at the end of the day, and that's pretty much the best thing about any wedding anyway.  Of course, everyone wants to have a perfect wedding, but if you just remind yourself that your marriage matters more than your wedding, then your wedding will seem perfect no matter what happens.

The lovely petifores, the delicate cherry blossoms, the petite flags that give guests a glimpse into the personalities of the bride and groom. I know that Gloria handmade so many of these thoughtful touches, which is pretty incredible.

I have been saving this wedding for a day where I could focus solely on the beauty of the affair...on a day where we had no business to take care of, no other scheduled postings. A day where we could just soak up this lovely wedding and find inspiration in all of it's gorgeous detail...

This wedding was sent to me by the incredibly talented Lisa Lefkowitz, whose work I have always admired. She has been sweet enough to share some of the details with us...

Gloria, the beautiful bride, was inspired by the simplicity of Asian aesthetics, along with the opulence of French culture. She looked to the 1920s for inspiration on how to blend the two styles.

Tables held one of three different centerpieces that included peonies, mock orange flowers, and branches. Kind of a tailored garden look. Gloria made the favor boxes, which held cookies frosted with images of dragons and rabbits (their respective Chinese zodiac years).Her love of cherry blossoms appeared on the cake, as well as the invitations, favor boxes and ceremony candles.
For her ceremony aisle, Gloria screenprinted the cherry blossom motif onto washi paper, then wrapped it around glass vases holding floating candles. The array of pastries, including madeleines, was shipped in from France.

What an incredible combination of do-it-yourself projects and completely decadent touches. I have so many more images to share with you from this wedding, so definitely stay tuned!

Real Wedding

I love, love, LOOOOVE this first post today. One of our readers, Reichel sent me pictures of her recent wedding in Northern California. Aside from the fact that the wedding is completely stunning, what I love is that Reichel entered her inspiration board in our contest a few months back so we are able to see how her board translated into her vision. I love that.

So...first, let's look at her inspiration board...

Reichel has documented all of her pictures and amazing details on her knot bio page...including the cost of all of her vendors. I love that she has done this so that others can really see what went into the planning and design of this wedding. Here are a few more details from Reichel about her big day...

Ryan & I met six years ago in Santa Barbara, CA and started our love affair with wine (and each other!). We moved up to the SF Bay area a few years ago and have learned to love Napa and Sonoma wine country as well. So when it came time to celebrate the wedding it was only natural that we'd choose a winery. After searching high and low in Napa & Sonoma, we decided to have our ceremony & reception at Buena Vista Winery in Sonoma. It's only a few blocks away from historic Sonoma Plaza, as well as only a few blocks away from my Mother's house.

Buena Vista Winery is the oldest premium winery in California. So that was the starting point of our theme. I wanted to keep everything very old fashioned and romantic. There's several old stone buildings on the property as well as a rustic fountain. The dinner was held on the second floor of one of these buildings; inside it's all rich dark wood and very rustic. We held the ceremony in the fountain courtyard in front of their gorgeous ivy-covered champagne cellars. The cocktail hour was held outside as well, in front of their fun outdoor bar, surrounded by trees light up with white Christmas lights.

My colors ended up coming from the winery itself, cream, taupe, chocolate and sage. I chose my dress to fit in with the color theme...it was gorgeous cream alençon lace over latte silk with a pearl brooch & latté velvet ribbon. Ryan wore a classic tux with a latté colored tie to match my sash. The bridesmaids wore espresso JCrew dresses and I gave them sage colored pashminas to wear and the groomsen had sage colored ties to match.

I also used a lot of rich dark wood accents. I actually work for Williams Sonoma, on the Pottery Barn catalog creative team. So a lot of my decor reflects that. I used the Turned Wood collection for a lot of the accents: the cake stand, the candles on the dinner tables, the hurricane candles on the cocktail tables, the chargers, the pillar holders...even the centerpieces were made using the Turned Wood Pedestal bowls.

Also from Pottery Barn were the kraft-colored leaf placecards. They inspired the the kraft paper wine escort tags. I thought it was a fun idea instead of your usual escort cards. I designed all of the other paper items myself. I used a vintage flower design in chocolate on the invites and then had them letter-pressed on thick cream paper. I also used a drawing of the winery that I scanned from one of Buena Vista's wine labels. The save-the-dates were from a print of an old wine label, I just altered it with our info in Photoshop.

To fit in with Buena Vista's old history, I tried to plan things that would fit in the appropriate time period. We had a old-fashioned "gypsy jazz band" (the Golden Gate Hot Club). They played for the ceremony and the cocktail hour. They set the mood perfectly with their 20's - 40's music, the guests just loved it. I also rented a vintage 1936 touring limo from Ambassador's Rolls. They actually have two matching limos like this and I spotted them out in Napa one day. I couldn't resist, it was one of my favorite details! The limo was so unique and fun and it held 14 people; perfect for the whole bridal party. Another classic touch were the engraved stainless steel corkscrews we used as favors. It's fun seeing them randomly at friends & family's houses months afterwards! Obviously they're very useful ;)

It turned out to be such a blast and you could almost imagine you were back in a different era. I just loved how it all turned out...I just wish we could do it all over again :)

Real Wedding on a Budget

Our next Real Wedding for the day is not only fabulous, it was all done on a budget of UNDER $7000. Amber of Amber Events in Los Angeles sent me the images and the details, as she just knew you guys would love this event...

Some fun details from Amber...

Dan and Dana’s wedding was held in the courtyard of the 75 year old Irene's Adobe at the 29 Palms Inn in Twentynine Palms, CA by Joshua Tree State Park.  The pair have been going to the Inn for 4 years for an annual desert getaway and when they got engaged, they knew that they wanted an intimate destination wedding, and so the funky Inn fit them perfectly.

Dana, who is, in fact, my sister,  was the ULTIMATE laid back bride and pretty much left it to myself and her husband to plan. Her husband designed and printed the invitations, and Dana only specified to me that she wanted candles everywhere. Lots of candles. Since she gave me total free reign of the decor, I filled the courtyard with 50 or more luminaries, twinkle lights, candles, wild flower arrangements in mason jars and floating candles in mason jars. I normally don't do flowers for my clients, but since this was my sister, I did everything I could for her. I brought the flowers out in coolers from the Los Angeles Flower Mart!

With only 25 guests in attendance, the weekend was so stress free and such great bonding and team effort with family & friends. Everyone arrived on Friday and all of the setup for the wedding was completed that day. I sent our dad out to the desert with a trash bin to collect the sand for the luminaries. Our mom made her famous pineapple upside down cake for the reception. Saturday morning, wedding day, the 25 guests went out into Joshua Tree State Park and hiked on the boulders. After the hike, the guys played horseshoes and Bocce Ball throughout the afternoon and the girls did a Yoga session by the lagoon. After Yoga, Dana had a relaxing massage before hair and makeup. Hiking, Yoga, Massage, and a Wedding! Now that's what I call a good day!

At 6:00pm, Dana was escorted into the courtyard by a guitarist playing and singing “Pretty Woman”. The guests could hear the music start from across the property and come closer and closer. The ceremony was beautiful and touching and there were no dry eyes in the group as they spoke the vows that they had written for each other. The reception was wonderful and laid back with a wonderful vegetarian dinner prepared by the 29 Palms Inn restaurant. The organic vegetables are grown right there on the property!

The entire wedding came in way under $7,000. Dana's dress was $99 on sale at a Los Angeles boutique managed by a friend of hers. Their rings from the Los Angeles jewelry wholesale mart. Her wedding coordinator & florist happened to be her sister. Her photographer, Lori Evelyn (www.lorievelyn.com) is a close family friend and shot the wedding for a room for the weekend. The dinner was a buffet with a simple vegetarian pasta dish, salad, fruit, & rolls, and the alcohol for the bar was brought in by Dana & Dan. The guitarist was a friend

Most of my weddings are large, formal 200-300+ people affairs in ballrooms & estates in the Los Angeles area, yet I know that this was not my favorite wedding just because she is my sister. Dana & Dan had a wedding that reflected 100% them and that is what shines through on the wedding day. They threw out all of the rules and had a gorgeous day. The "Flower Dogs" were just icing on the cake!

A Real Wedding

I have the prettiest wedding to show you guys today! It was sent to me by the incredibly talented Amanda of Amanda Kraft Photography, with flowers designed by Donna at Beautiful Blooms. The details of this wedding are absolutely perfect and to me, it's one of those weddings that people are still talking about...

Scott Eby and Kate Bilo met on Kate's first day of work at AccuWeather in 2003. Kate had taken an administrative assistant job right out of college, and Scott's first words to her were "you should look into being on TV - they're always looking for pretty people to do that." Kate was flattered, but thought nothing of it. The pair slowly developed an easy friendship that within time (and a few nights at the karaoke bar) turned into a relationship.

Kate had decided to take Scott's early advice about trying out for an on-air position at AccuWeather, and within six months was hired as one of the main female weather anchors for the company. She was stuck working on Christmas Eve of 2004, and Scott came in to pick her up for dinner as she was finishing up recording some weather videos for the AccuWeather.com website. Scott, a computer programmer for AccuWeather, surreptitiously inserted a graphic in Kate's weather show saying "Katie, Will You Marry Me?" and proposed on-air! They still have the video to show the grandchildren someday.

Kate and Scott decided on a long engagement, and set the wedding date for August 31, 2007. Kate and her mom took control of planning the event, incorporating an "elegant picnic" theme. Here is how it all turned out...

The simple outdoor ceremony featured individual touches like hand-picked readings from Kate's favorite poets, processional music from the score of the movie that played when the bride and groom had their first kiss, and miniature bottles of San Pellegrino Limonata butlered with straws.

Owing to Kate's Spanish major in college and fascination with Latin culture, the garden cocktail hour was infused with Latin flavor, featuring a 5-piece salsa band, made-to-order mojito bar, assorted Latin chips and funky salsas, and the bride and grooms favorite Mexican beer, Modelo Especial, butlered with fresh lime.

The sit-down dinner focused on a summer picnic theme, complete with black-and-white checkered tablecloths, flickering lanterns, and a custom menu designed by the bride including slow-braised beef short ribs, bacon-wrapped scallops, mashed potato spring rolls and fresh cornbread. Kate and Scott, trying to veer away from the traditional wedding cake, chose to serve assorted freshly-baked pies served with ice cream from the famed Penn State Creamery. The guests then danced the night away to a ten-piece dance orchestra before leaving with a special treat - the bride and groom's favorite brownies, from the Fat Witch Bakery in New York.

What a beautiful wedding. I love that the couple infused parts of themselves into every detail...from the Latin inspired cocktail hour to the freshly baked pies, it seems that this couple wanted their wedding to tell a story about their lives and their loves. Dear Abby

This next Dear Abby was titled "Color Choice Disaster" so I think that our bride really needs our help!

Q: Our color palette is basically apple green as the domineering color with blush pink and light turquoise as the sub colors. I knew I should’ve picked less colors, like two instead of three. Right now I’m so confused in the mixing and matching of all three together. First of all, what do you think about the color palette? Do you think I’ve picked too many colors? If so, what would be your suggestion? It’s 3 months away from the wedding! :(

What do you guys think? Too many colors?

A: I have to say, I agree with many of the comments that you need a foundation color. It would ground your palette in a way that these lighter colors simply can't. With that said, I also think that you can look at this palette in a couple of ways. If you want a variety of light colors, make sure that you vary the hues and add in elements with  pattern or texture (vintage teacups with prints on them, great patterned napkins, bouquet's filled with multiple colors) otherwise, your overall look will run the risk of seeming somewhat bubblegum-ish.

When I was playing around with your palette, I was really drawn to the two shades of green, paired with the pink. It's kind of preppy chic, which I love. I struggled with the blue. So, my thought it is this...

What if you used your varying shades of green as your foundation colors...letting deeper greens sit next to lime greens. Have your maids in a great pink dress, with gold strappy heels and a bright white and green bouquet. Bridesmaids make for FABULOUS decor so although the palette might seem predominately green and white, the accent of the girl's dresses will add a lovely splash of color...

Also remember that some colors can come rather creatively...if you're having your wedding outside, the blue of the sky or the ocean will provide a beautiful accent color that goes with just about everything. You can bring in greens and pinks through the cocktails that you serve. Hope this helps!

It's Dear Abby day and I am so excited to share this first question with you. One of my dearest friends, Cat of Cat Seto and Paper Studio in San Francisco, sent me this dilemma that her clients Tien and David are going through. Here's the story...

Savethedate

Tien and David met in grade school and wanted to get married in their schoolyard. They recently discovered that the school denied permission to be married there because the school did not meet earthquake requirements. To make a long story short, they are having to move their ceremony to the ballroom where they are having their reception. They are looking for a few ways to incorporate their schoolroom love story into their affair, in a ballroom setting. They don’t want it to be too themed, but they do want to infuse their wedding with a few fun details.

Cat has enlisted the help of SMP and our readers, along with Minhee of Paper + Cup designs whose recent school themed wedding was featured in Martha Stewart, to help.

I thought it would be fun to ask my favorite event designer, Lisa Vorce of Oh How Charming! to help out with some ideas and suggestions for this cute couple. And I am beyond thrilled with the tips that Lisa has come up with...classic details that would add a touch of whimsy and a huge handful of charm!

What a fun design challenge! I'm sitting here sipping my morning coffee reminiscing about grade school. Bringing back such great memories! For Tien and David - if they can't have their ceremony at their grammar school -- let's bring the grammar school to them! Here are some quick ideas for them....
  • Escort card display: Would be so great to hang their escort cards from monkey bars! (Quick tip...scour ebay for a set of monkey bars...after your wedding, donate them to an area school or day care center)
  • Table Numbers: Each table can represent one of the classrooms from their grammar school (i.e. "Room 2"). Can even add the teacher's name as well! Table numbers can be hand written on mini chalkboards or on that fabulous lined paper that we all had to use when we were practicing our cursive.
  • Grammar school trivia: Would be fun to list quintessential grammar school trivia on cocktail napkins (i.e. Who was the 5th president of the United States").
  • Menus: Use phonetic spelling on the key elements of the menu to give the look / feel of a dictionary entry.
  • Guest sign in: Create an attendance chart! As guests sign in - have an attendant place a gold star next to their name.
  • Lounge area decor: If they're having any lounge vignettes - use grammar school text books as cocktail table decor instead of coffee table books.
  • Popsicles: Popsicles always remind me of grammar school. Have the caterer tray pass popsicles as a late night snack.
  • Favors: If budget permits - collect vintage lunch boxes and have them lined up on a table as guests exit. The lunch boxes can be filled with a snack size carton of milk & homemade cookies. As alternative packaging - use brown paper sacks which are just as cute!
  • Bake sale!: As a dessert display - set up an old school Bake Sale table with yummy grade school treats (brownies, rice crispy treats, chocolate chip cookies, etc).
  • Groom's cake: If having a groom's cake - make it in the shape of a back pack, a globle, or a ruler.
  • Ceremony programs: Use old Pee-Gee folders as the cover of the ceremony program.
  • Transportation: If providing transportation - use old yellow school buses!
  • Cigar Lounge: If budget permits -- park one of the school buses just outside the dinner reception and use it as a cigar lounge.
  • Grand entrance for the wedding party: If doing a grand entrance -- do a "roll call" for the wedding party where they have to state "Present!" when they enter the room.

The bride, Amy, is a commercial actress who recently made an appearance in several Turbotax commercials and the groom, Brad, is an actor - he recently made an appearance in an episode of Scrubs on NBC.

Spring Inspiration

We had one fleeting day of Spring in Boston yesterday...you know, that perfect 70 degree weather, not a cloud in the sky. Notice the word fleeting, as the temperature is dropping as we speak and the clouds are moving in for a rainy weekend. But, even if we only felt it for a minute, Spring is definitely on it's way!

I have to say, this is one of the best weddings that I have seen lately...it's so very important for couples to infuse their wedding with their own unique personality and perspective. This wedding does just that...and with style and elegance to boot. I love the juxtaposition of the traditional, elegant elements with the edgy, spirited details.

One of my favorite photographers, Jessamyn Harris, sent me this wedding a few days ago...needless to say, I went completely nuts. This is the perfect example of a fun loving couple, infusing their personalities into otherwise elegant affair. The end result is a wedding that screams fun and yet is still oh-so-chic...

Event Design was done by the lovely and talented Alicia at Alicia K Designs

The wedding was held in August in Yountville (Napa Valley, California). The couple wanted something elegant but really fun. Thus, the wedding and reception took place at an absolutely beautiful, modern estate while whimsical details were incorporated into the overall style.

The men wore vintage suites and ties, the dogs were the ring bearers. They had a vintage candy dessert bar, a towering cupcake tree and  a "cheese" cake with imported rounds of cheese stacked on top of each other and decorated with flowers. The bride's former roller-derby teammates served as usherettes (amazing idea), they had a bouncing castle during the reception and a band that played all kinds of fun, swing songs. They had vintage car themed table settings and a self portrait set-up for the guests.

Bottom line? THIS is a wedding that I would love to have attended. I have more fun pics on the way so stay tuned!!

Real Wedding, III

I thought you guys might like to hear a bit more about Ameleah's wedding...

From Ameleah...

We saved a lot by thinking outside the box when it came to finding our ceremony and reception locations. I wanted an outdoor garden wedding. We looked at a lot of venues, but most had steep site fees and none of them really wowed us. My husband's family offered to host our ceremony in their back yard and it was perfect, a beautiful, personal location with no site fee! We ended up having our reception at my husband's favorite Irish pub. The pub is in a gorgeous historic building with high ceilings, wood floors and lovely details. I love historic homes and can't imagine living in a modern space so this fit my personality perfectly. We had the entire top floor for the day, it included tables, chairs, basic white linens and there was no site fee!  It isn't your typical wedding venue, but we were willing to be flexible and it saved us a lot of money.

We served our guests horse d oeuvres, a delicious three course plated meal and had an open bar. I'll be honest, we probably didn't receive the level of service that we would have gotten from a venue that does hundreds of weddings a year. We had to be very specific in what we wanted, double and triple check everything and their attention to detail wasn't the greatest, but I am probably the only person that noticed the tables were not set up correctly or that the servers didn't come around to offer wine before the main course was served.

We kept our guest list small. We only invited our families and closest friends. This whittled the guest list down to 90 people. It was tough at times because our parents frequently wanted to add great aunt so and so or their good friend from college, but we wouldn't budge on this. I love that we had a close, personal relationship with every single person at our wedding.

We took a chance and hired a wedding photographer that was just starting out. I know this is something that many people wouldn't be willing to do, but we really liked our photographer and we ended up with some very good pictures and a lot of pretty good pictures. There are certainly moments when I wish we would have splurged on a high end photographer that could have given us more polished images, but this is undeniably one of the elements that made it possible for us to stay within our budget.

I really wanted to share a bit more from Ameleah's gorgeous and affordable wedding. For those of you that are dying to know how much this wedding cost and what exactly "budget-friendly" means...well (drum roll please)....Ameleah planned and executed this stunning wedding for a grand total of $12,331.

And just look at the sheer beauty and the chic style that she designed...it could grace the covers of any major bridal magazine!

I tried to tackle as many DIY projects ahead of time as possible. I already mentioned the invitations, programs and save the dates but I also made moss covered monogram letters to decorate our reception doors (picture to come) and crepe paper poppers filled with freeze dried rose petals for guests to shower us with as we walked down the aisle.

I also did most of the flowers myself. I ordered our personal flowers from a florist, but I did all the centerpieces, decorated the arch for our ceremony, made nosegays for the aisle, two wreaths, and arrangements for the escort card table and guestbook table in the two days prior to the wedding. Flowers were one of my priorities, I wanted tons of flowers at my wedding, but when I received the quote from the florist I knew we couldn't afford it. I also didn't want to compromise on this. I wanted green orchids and masses of cream roses with pink and brown accents. I know this isn't for everyone, but I love flower arranging and I knew that I could save a ton of money by doing them myself. I shopped around a lot on the internet for the best prices, did a lot of research and made trial arrangements so I felt comfortable recreating them before our wedding. I recruited my mom and bridesmaids to help with the prep work. I actually ended up liking the arrangements I made myself better than the professional bouquets from the florist.

I also did a lot of comparison shopping on the internet. I knew what I wanted and I wanted to get the best price possible. Some of my favorite online vendors are  Jamali Garden for vases, Romantic Flowers for ribbon and Envelope Mall for envelopes for save the dates and envelopment style folders.

Real Wedding

I hope everyone had a great holiday weekend! I love to start off our week by featuring a reader's real wedding...for some reason, the creativity and approachability of the weddings that you guys create just completely inspires me for the week. So, that is just what we are doing today!

The sweet but sophisticated color palette, the dreamy ambiance, the abundance of gorgeous flowers...everything is magical. But what I love most about this wedding is that Ameleah designed this fairytale on budget! And, she is here today to share with us her vision and her practical ideas for creating magazine-worthy style while keeping your budget in check!

When we first got engaged I had a million grand ideas floating around in my head fueled by all the gorgeous weddings featured in bridal magazines and on the internet, but I knew that we couldn't have everything and stay within our budget. We set our priorities early on and that guided our decisions about where to splurge and where to save. We decided on a summer garden wedding. The look we were going for was fresh and casual yet elegant. Our top priorities were the flowers and food.

We ended up spending the most money on these two elements, but we got creative to come up with ways to save as well. We also used this reasoning to pick out the elements we were willing to compromise on in other areas. When I looked at invitations I found that I was drawn to simple invitations on lux paper. Ideally I would have loved letterpress, but it just wasn't in the budget. I ended up buying lettra letterpress paper in bulk from Crane then designing our save the dates and programs myself, a talented friend designed our invitations, and had them printed and cut at kinkos. I ended up with invitations on the high quality paper I loved, but at a fraction of the cost.

Bridesmaids Gifts, III
