I was just engaged in March and I immediately began compiling images and putting together inspiration boards. My FH and I have decided to have a small outdoor wedding (50 people) next summerat a relatives house on the river.
Since we have a tiny budget, I started piecing together a simple yet stylish semi-casual affair. I thought I wanted to do greens and blues (think beach glass) with white/ivory and chrome accents. I was picturing my fiance wearing a khaki or seersucker suit but yesterday he informs me that he wants to wear a formal black suit.
To me black suits and outdoor summer weddings dont go? Is there a way to pull it off? Do I need to make our reception decor more formal to match us? or am I just overreacting?

I don't think black suits break an outdoor wedding affair. I think if you do it right, it can actually look quite classy. You wouldn't need to change anything about the decor either!
To do this, you just need to dress the typical black suit down a few notches so it still has that casual look and feel. Something like this:

This picture is a good example because it has your color tones. I think the black suit here is rather quite stylish in this setting! Its simple, yet it holds its own class without being too flashy!
If you still aren't feeling the black suit…maybe you could sit down with your groom and go through a magazine of different suit styles and talk together about what suites you like and don't like. Remember, its his wedding too! He has his own style so try your best to include his own unqiue style so that it compliments yours. Good luck on the rest of your wedding planning! =)

I went to a wedding last year where the groomsmen had on black suits but they had light more casual looking ties.
The ties were actually from Thomas Pink and served as the groomsmens gifts as well.

I went to an outdoor summer wedding last year that was black tie optional. The entire event was stunning. It was an evening wedding which I think lent well to black tie. It was held in a backyard garden. Most people would have opted to have a more casual event but the black tie was very romantic and made the event seem much more special.
A way to compromise could be a dinner jacket instead of a full black tux. They look very elegant but visually are lighter and work very well for summer. i am not sure what the protocol on when they are to be worn, but in this day and age just about anything goes.
Another thing to consider. Just let your Fiance pick what he wants. I know in planning my wedding I have made most decision. I picked the colors. I picked the flowers. I narrowed down the locations. My fiance has not gotten to make a lot of decisions. He wants to feel special in what he has on just like you do in your dress. If I tux would make him happy I say just go for it. It is probably just something he want to make him feel different and special.

I like the idea of a black suit in the garden. If you google garden weddings pics you will see many examples. Have a beautiful wedding!!!

I am also having an outdoor wedding and my fiance will be wearing a black suit but we styled it down a little with a more casual tie. I found this great website called the Tie Bar that offers a huge selection of ties and they are a steal as well. You should look into it.

A dark suit is always appropriate — what if you compromise and he goes with navy? With some navy shoes yourself, you'll tie the whole look together. Check this out for inspiration: http://somethingnewstyle.com/shoes/2009/02/show-your-feathers/
