I'm getting married May 2 next year and my main flowers are peonies. My florist is quoting me $18 per peony head (this does not include labor). She said that sometimes it can get up to $35. She insists that her prices are compeitive but the other florists in town are quoting me between $8.77 – 10.00. I'm thinking about canceling my contract with my florist because there is no way that I can afford the amount of flowers I want for that price. Is she being fair or greedy?

I am not sure on the exact price because I am not using them. But it seems to me that May is the beginning of the season. I don't know if there is a specific peony that you want to use because different varietals have different seasons. i will say that everythign I have read is that they are expensive.

If you can get the what you want at the cheaper price get what you want at the cheaper price. You just need to get a quote from that vendor and lock in the price. that is what I did with my florist. I didn't mess around with finding out the cost of each bloom. I got the cost of the arrangement that I wanted then cut where i needed too. I did know some of the blooms I wanted were more expensive then other so when I didn't get cut back that is what got cut.

I am getting married on May 16th and when I booked my florist I gave her a budget – a flat amount and said what can we do. She told me I was in luck because it was the height of peony season when they are not as costly and I could make it work. And they would work because they are so big when in full bloom you don't need a ton of them. I did not, however, get a cost per bloom. I am going to meet with her in november, I'll see what she says (although you'll probably have done something by then! )

Thanks! Because my wedding is May 2nd, peonies will not be in peak season (that's usually mid-May – June) so I will most likely have to pay more than you. But please let me know! Thanks for your help!

I am a florist and depending on where you live during the early season they can range from 8-25. We have a source in town that we get them from so it depends on if they are shipped in from another area and where you live. I don't think that that price is unrealistic.

I just picked up Peonies yesterday.  They are running 10.50 retail.  Actually for March this is a great price.  I purchased them from one of my wholesalers.  I will be getting them in from a source in PA sometime in mid to late May and normally run from about 3-6.00 per stem.  One nice thing about them is they are organically grown and each stem is guaranteed to have as many as 5 blooms per stem.  The only problem is that they are limited in color.  Mostly shades of pink.  They are the old fashion variety and since they are not grown in mass the fragrance is out of this world.  Prices vary from area to area depending on shipping.  I have purchased peonies in December and January coming in from Israel and Spain that will run up to 15 dollars per stem.  When I price my flowers I include labor in the price of the flower so I can sell them directly out of my shop cash and carry at up to 50% off retail.  When getting peonies in they do require a bit of conditioning and attention to get them to open if they are very tight buds.  If you think they are expensive you might want to select another flower that will give you the same look at a lower price depending on the time of year.
