Guests Standing During Ceremony

So I have picked a wedding venue that I love.  We'd like to have the ceremony right outside the venue in the beautiful wildflower garden/forest that surrounds the venue.  The only problem is even though there is space enough for 150 guests to roam the grounds outside the venue, because of the layout outside there isn't enough space to have 150 chairs for people to sit during the ceremony – There's space for about 60 chairs.  I'm not sure what to do?  Can I ask the majority of my guests to stand for the ceremony?  It will only be 20 minutes but still?  Not sure about this one.  I really want to get married outdoors but if I don't have guests standing my only other option is to get married in the venue (which isn't terrible but not ideal).  What do you think I should do?

I'll also be having my guests stand during the ceremony, but have some chairs available for anyone who can't really stand for more than 10 mins or so.  Our ceremony will be very short and sweet and we feel it would be silly to seat everyone for such a small amount of time.

I think it also depends on the level of formality of the venue/wedding overall.  If everything else is super formal, it might be odd to have people stand.  If it is a more casual affair, however, and the ceremony is relatively short, I don't see why not.  It's your day, after all!

That's great advice.  Thanks Tara!  Are wedding is pretty casual so I guess it would make sense and the ceremony will be very short.  Thanks for helping me relieve some wedding stress and good luck with your planning!

This is tricky, but I would make sure everyone is OK with standing. By OK, I mean, if I were you I would check the weather (so it's not 90 degrees outside, and your guests have to stand). If it is going to be warm, make sure they have umbrellas, or fans to help keep your guests cool. And keep in mind, your guests won't just be there for the ceremony time, they'll be waiting probably about 15 minutes before the ceremony even starts, so I would keep your ceremony as short as possible if you're going to have everyone stand.

P.S. And think of all the women in heels!!

I am not sure how informal your wedding is and depends on your theme as well…. If it's a hot summer day, I envision having japanese styles parasols and bottled water/juices ready for your guests.  If you like a vintage back-to-basics feel to it, it'd be nice to have several big pretty picnic cloths and lots of big fluffy pillows for the younger guests to sit.  Not only it creates a fun & casual atmosphere, the picnic cloth, pillows, parasols all become a part of your wedding decor too.
