One of my closest friends came to me and asked me to help her come up with an idea for the guest gift. She said that her fiancé had mentioned burning a music cd but she felt it was overdone. They would like to incorporate music in some way. Any ideas or places I can look further?

What is the theme or mood of the wedding?
I have a few ideas for favors which may or may not work depending on your friend's wedding, since I don't know the details 
1.) You could cover a glass candle holder with sheet music or with lyrics to one of their favorite songs along with a scented candle in the holder.
2.) They could also hand out guitar picks with the bride and groom's name on it along with their wedding date.
3.) If they are a fun couple, you could hand out kazoos or a fun musical toy with a thank you note or the couples name and wedding date attached. The guest could use the favors to “sound off” the couple goodbye after the reception.
4.) If they have the resources, they could buy chocolate/white chocolate music notes as favors for each person.
These are just a few that I came up with. I hope you and the bride can come up with something really cute as a favor! Good luck! =)

I love this idea – and if you want to make it more wedding-y you can find sites with engravable USBs in a nice silver or pewter.

I had my wedding in an old theater in KC which has been restored and is primarily used for concerts and weddings… My wedding theme was music. We had a classical guitarist for the ceremony, etc. But I love our wedding favors… all the tables were sprinkled with pearl colored guitar picks with a saying printed on them. They were not only favors, but part of the decor.

I would do up a fancy slideshow of me and my husband, from infant->childhood->adolescent->adult-> how you guys meet & fall in love-> to the point of getting married, with a personalized love song as background. Then burn it to a disc for my guests.
