Cake Toppers by Cotton Bird Designs

Angela Cotton, owner and designer behind the incredibly great Etsy shop Cotton Bird Designs, emailed me to let me know about her adorable bird cake toppers...

Cotton_bird_designs

The birds are handmade using the most beautiful vintage and recycled fabrics and accents, and are adorned with tiny wire feet that would sit perfectly atop your cake. How sweet are these?  Don't you love them? You can check out her complete line on Etsy or right here on her Angela's website!

More Etsy finds coming throughout the day!

Wedding Cake Alternatives

As much as I adore wedding cakes, brides seem to be coming up with some pretty gorgeous alternatives. I kind of love the idea of a candy buffet, either in addition to or in lieu of a wedding cake. Here are some really gorgeous candy and dessert buffets that just might make you re-think the cake decision...

Cake_and_dessert_buffets

Top Row by Vanilla Bakeshop, Second Row by Rebecca Thuss, Third Row by Rebecca Thuss and Red Ribbon Studio, Fourth Row by Taste

I do think that it's nice to have somewhat of a substantial dessert if you are skipping the wedding cake...maybe an array of fresh baked pies, a selection of great Italian pastries, a hodge podge of miniature cakes in your favorite flavors. Something that guests with a sweet tooth can really look forward to!

Wedding Cakes by Lovin Sullivan

Until this morning, it had been a while since I checked out the LovinSullivan site...and wow, I was completely blown away! Their cakes have always been fantastic, but they've added some new designs that are almost too pretty to eat...

Lovin_sullivan_cakes

These cakes are so gorgeous and yet they really don't take themselves too seriously. They are full of personality and whimsy, perfect for a more untraditional affair,  and yet they are so beautiful, they could be just as lovely in an elegant ballroom setting. Although the designers at LovinSullivan aren't accepting new cake orders, they are featuring an online gallery that could provide HOURS of inspiration!

Wedding Cakes by Elegant Cheesecakes

I hope everyone had a great weekend! I have been drooling over these cake pictures by Elegant Cheesecakes in Half Moon Bay, California for the past three days and am so excited to finally share them with you (even if you hate me for making you want a piece of cake, rather than a bowl of oatmeal)...

Elegant_cheesecakes

How gorgeous are these cakes?? The second photo down with the lemons is my favorite...so chic, so elegant. Love, love, love it!

Whether your wedding cake is traditional or whimsical, it can really be such a fun and important part of your wedding style. My own wedding cake was a simple, three tiered round cake covered in sugar glitter...it sat right at the corner of the dance floor, adding such a pretty, glistening touch to the night. I've seen others that are more ornate, those that are fun and untraditional, those that are kind of a combination of styles...the cake is just one of those great places to really express your personalities.

So what kind of cake are you guys doing? Traditional? Modern? Cupcakes? No cake at all?

Cake Stands

What is a great cake without a pretty way to display it? Since I started writing this blog, I have spent hours scouring the internet for great cake stand sources and I have found some absolutely beautiful pieces. These, by Pleasing Pantry,  are so pretty it's almost sinful to put anything on them...

Cake_stands_by_pleasing_pantry

I love the delicate antique designs. So feminine and elegant. These would look absolutely gorgeous set up in a collection of sizes with pretty little cakes displayed together. Actually, any of these cake stands below would look great set up the same way...

Cake_stands

Top Row, Left to Right: Noir Cake Stands  and White Cake Stands by Rosanna, Black Cake Stands by Ballard Designs / Center Row: Stands by Clara French / Bottom Row, Left to Right: Pink Stand on Ebay, Silver Stands on Ballard Designs, White Stands by Martha Stewart at Macy's

I even recently saw this brilliant idea for DIY cake stands over on Design*Sponge....

Cake_stands_by_design_sponge

How cute are those, by the way? See the full article on how to make your own stand right here!

And yet, even though I've found some absolutely gorgeous stands, I am still in need of more sources! Many of the prettiest cake stands are too small for a standard wedding cake. They might not hold the weight that a wedding cake for 200 demands. So, I am putting the question out to our SMP readers...What are your favorite sources for cake stands??

Wedding Cakes by Cake Lava

We recently launched our Little Black Book Honolulu and one of my favorite new vendors, cakelava, just happens to design some of my favorite, island inspired cakes...

Wedding_cakes_by_cake_lava_2

I love that they can design beautifully simplistic cakes OR crazy, over-the-top fun cakes. Each one seems like so much TLC went into the design and truly reflected the personality of the bride and groom. They have tons of additional photos on their website, so definitely take a look!

Wedding Cakes by Edith Meyer

It's been so long since I featured wedding cakes on SMP! Probably because every time I do, I end up running out and buying a cupcake or a brownie or something really bad. But, I have to say, the wedding cake is one of my favorite parts of any wedding...it's always the one element where you can see the bride and groom's personality, no matter what the wedding style is.

Edith Meyer
has been creating beautiful cakes for years, and aside from being one of the sweetest bakers you've ever met, she is also one of the most talented...

Wedding_cakes_by_edith_meyer

I love that chocolate cake in the top right corner...a twist on the traditional. Edith also has some pretty amazing grooms cakes on her site, as well as a blog that shows all of the behind the scenes action...like the new wispy feathers that she made for a  gorgeous glittery cake.  Definitely check them out when you have a minute! And stay tuned for more gorgeous cakes throughout t the day!

Jessica Rust Designs

It seems like Valentine's Day is just around the corner (yikes)...and Jessica Rust is on it. Jessica is one of my all time favorite designers, and her new birch platter is just too cute for words and is the perfect V-Day gift...

Jessica_rust_2

Fill the platter with your favorite cupcakes and voila! I also love these pretty heart sets...

Jessica_rust_3

Or these oh-so-chic silhouette plates...

Jessica_rust_4

If you aren't already familiar with Jessica's work, you HAVE to check out her site. I've written about her a few times in the past and have given her products away in giveaways. I am just in love with her sweet style and the way that she personalizes her work for you is just absolutely perfect!

Wedding Cakes By April Reed

Just a bit more eye candy from April Reed for you to devour as you are wrapping up your day! These cakes are just so beautiful. The sugar flowers look so real, they are just incredible. I have to say (and I've been thinking about it all day) the one thing that I really love about April's cakes, is the stunning simplicity paired with the one exquisite detail. Whether it's a flower or a branch or a gorgeous ribbon, April edits her designs so that the cake takes center stage...

April_reed_cakes_2

And in my opinion, I've saved the best for last. These next two cakes are sheer perfection...AND they epitomize the April Reed look. Simple, sophisticated, gorgeous...

Wedding Cakes By April Reed

I am certain that most of you, like myself, are already HUGE fans of April Reed...the cake designer that has literally redefined what a wedding cake should look like. How completely beautiful are these cakes? The simplicity is perfection and yet the details...oh the details! The flowers, by the way, are ALL real...made completely out of sugar. Isn't that amazing? I sound like a twelve year old girl right now, I know. But, I just love April's work so much that it's hard for me to find the right words to express just how lovely these cakes are!

Cake Stands by Clara French

One of my favorite cake designers, Judy at the Tallant House, sent over the most gorgeous pictures of her work featured on these oh-so-chic stands. Aside from the fact that these cakes are so completely beautiful...so completely magazine worthy...how great are these stands!?

Cake_stands

Designed by the ever-so-talented Michaela of Clara French, a beautiful ceramics line named after the owner's grandmother, these stands really do the cakes justice. They are delicate and feminine, elegant without being fussy. They are the perfect touch to just about any cake. Thank you so much Judy for sending over these images!

Wedding Cakes by Bakery Bar

As I was working on our Portland Little Black Book, I stumbled across the most adorable cake company that I have seen in a while...Bakery Bar. Aside from their ridiculously cute holiday cakes, they also have some gorgeous wedding designs...

Bakery_bar

Ummm...how great are these? The bird's nest is my favorite, though for a winter wedding, those snow men are just about as good as it gets. Love these!

Wedding Cakes by take the cake

After a long flight from Houston to Boston yesterday, I arrived home to most wonderful surprise package. Inside, were two perfect boxes filled with two perfect sets of sweets, made none other than one of our Little Black Book members, take the cake in Chicago. My husband and I devoured the cookies and truffles in about three minutes flat, which was a good sign that I should write about them on today's post ...

Take_the_cake

The first two images are of take the cake's newest addition, Chocolate Gourmet, a collection of sweet treats that would make for the most perfect wedding favors. The best part about the little cookies and truffles...they easily fit the two requirements for a good food favor...delicious and absolutely adorable. Plus they come in oh-so-clever flavors like "messed-up mocha, oozy boozy caramel and morning after merlot." You can buy their cookies and truffles online...the only tough part might be deciding which ones to order. When in doubt, go for the chubby wubby chocolate cookies. Heaven, literally.

take the cake also designs truly stunning wedding cakes...seriously. Just look at that detail work. There isn't much more to say about these cakes other than "wow." The colors, the styles, the overall look and design...it's so chic and contemporary, and yet feels really romantic.

Thanks so much to take the cake for being such a wonderful inspiration! And, for providing my husband and me with a nice little welcome home "dinner."

Unique Catering, Part II

If you thought yesterday's food looked amazing, please feast your eyes on these little masterpieces...

Taste

Taste Catering in San Francisco specializes in perfect, magazine worthy food that I have literally been drooling over all morning. Little bites like Ahi Tuna Tartare served in tiny cones with Tobiko Caviar, Lemon-Ginger Prawns sauteed in White Wine, Fresh Ginger, Lemon & Garlic, Mini Mu Shu Bundles filled with a julienne of crisp Asian Vegetables..." Yeah. Amazing.

And, just when I thought it couldn't get any better...I saw their desserts.

Taste_desserts

Taste can put together a dessert buffet that just might make your cake jealous. Butterscotch Profiteroles dipped in Dark Chocolate, Chocolate Pot de Crème Shooters, Lemon Meringue Tartlets, Goat Cheese Brulee with Fig Port Compote, Mini Ice Cream Cones
Pistachio Pyramids. To name a few.

Although not every caterer can create a presentation that could go in a great art book...if food is important, choose a caterer that is open and willing to work with you to design a menu that you are really proud of. Scour other catering sites to find inspiration, bring magazine tear-outs as reference, absolutely insist on a tasting. Make sure that you and your caterer see eye to eye. Whether you are having a champagne brunch or a full, sit down dinner...good food can really transform your entire evening into something completely and totally unique.

Unique Catering

First of all, I am so sorry that there were not any posts for you yesterday. I was actually in New York for the morning and ended up sitting in six and a half hours of traffic on our way back to Boston. So, I couldn't get anything up for you guys! Hopefully, the weekend posts will make up for it.

You know, I very rarely talk about food on this blog. And to be honest, I don't know why. Aside from the fact that I am a huge foodie, I also really believe that good food and good drinks will elevate a nice party, to a truly memorable party. So, I thought I would take a couple of days to highlight some caterers that are doing really unique work with the hopes of inspiring you to think outside the box when planning your own wedding menu.

Creative Edge Parties in NY has such incredibly chic ideas in catering...and yet, the food seems hugely unstuffy and fun...

Creative_edge

Top Left: Mini Bistro Burgers with Ketchup and Bacon. Top Center: Boneless Chicken Wings with Celery Skewer and Gorgonzola Sauce. Top Right: Llez Pizzas Pumpkin, Caramelized Onions, Bella Paese and Sage. Center Left: Bruscetta Bar with Plum Tomato and Basil Oil, Olive Oil and Cured Tuna. Center Center: "Creative Edge" Deviled Eggs, Truffled Yolks and Buttered Brioche. Center Right: Raw Bar Alonso with a Cocktail Mignonette. Bottom Left: Smoked Salmon Club Sandwich with Cucumbers, Herb Mousse and Caramelized Shallot. Bottom Center: "Bacon and Eggs" using Six Hour Braised Bacon and Quail Eggs. Bottom Right: Chicken Rillettes on Garlic Bread.

How completely unique is this stuff! I love that it is all comfort food of sorts, presented in such a thoughtful and clean way. There is nothing better than a wedding with your favorite eats in bite size form. If you can convince your catering team to serve mini burgers or something similar at 11:30pm (or right before the night is about to end), you'll leave your guests feeling both satisfied and charmed.

Calligraphy Wedding Cakes

*spoiler alert...if you haven't already read the new Martha Stewart, this is a feature from that mag!

I am officially in love. This season's Martha Stewart Weddings features some of the most over-the-top, gorgeous wedding cakes I have ever seen. Beyond gorgeous. Perfection. One part calligraphy, one part color and confection...basically a wedding invitation designer's dream come true...

Martha_stewart_wedding_cakes_3

photos were all taken by Anita Calero, written by Heidi Cho

The first cake, on the top right, is basically a series of intricate scrolls, made by the brilliant Wendy Kromer. I love, love, love the colors on this cake and the calligraphy is perfect for a vintage chic wedding. The second row, also by Kromer, is a series of motifs that to me, is sweet but sophisticated. I love the use of a few smaller cakes, rather than one large.

The third cake, by designer Denise Sharp, features pieces of poetry by Elizabeth Barret Browning...so pretty. As much as I love the pink cake, I really am obsessed with the monogrammed French patisserie-style cakes. How adorable are these little sponge cakes??

And finally, the most classic calligraphy cake...designed with the help of Michael Sull, calligrapher extraordinaire. Sheer beauty. Almost too pretty to eat! The last photo on the right shows paper cones stuffed with wrapped chocolates from Bell'occhio.

I am not big on "themes" but using calligraphy as a focal point in your decor is completely stunning. It just seems like such a romantic way to add personality and beauty, without seeming over the top or too styled. What do you guys think?

PS - This particular issue of Weddings just might be the best one yet. It is JAM packed with goodies. If you haven't already, definitely run out and buy it asap. And I swear, I am not just saying that because Abby Jean has an ad in it...it really is THAT good.

Wedding favors by Cutie Pie Cookie Co.

I love, love, love the Cutie Pie Cookies that Brooklyn Bride featured the other day!!!

Cutie_pie_cookies

You can customize them however you'd like, starting at $3.25 per cookie. You just provide them with the image and...voila! Instant favors. They will even package them individually, so that you can just adorn them with your own cute label or bow. They are so darn cute, though, you really don't even need to add anything!

Wedding Cakes

update...I am going to be working on my blog design today, so forgive me if there are little hiccups here and there!

I woke up this morning thinking about chocolate. Chocolate cake, actually.

My problem is...I have become completely and unabashedly addicted to the food/life/love/everything blog, Orangette. Last night, I read her post about chocolate cake and low and behold, I can't stop thinking about chocolate cake. So I figure the next best thing to actually baking and devouring an entire cake, would be to blog about it, right??

I am going nuts over the chic concoctions that the Vanilla Bakeshop in Los Angeles is creating...

Vanilla

I also love the pretty cakes that Jen's Desserts is cooking up in Seattle...contemporary and understated. Perfect inspiration in my opinion!

Jen_bakery

Okay, I lied. There really isn't a "next best thing" to eating and devouring a chocolate cake!

Wedding Cakes by The Cake Girls

I am sure that many of you have heard of The Cake Girls. They have been featured in nearly every major magazine and are even going to have a spot on the Food Network this summer. If you haven't heard of them, prepare yourself to fall in love...with a cake.

The_cake_girls

How gorgeous are these cakes! My current favorite is the top left photo...what a beautiful wedding it would be, if the entire event was inspired by this cake.

Desserts by Buttercake Bakery

I have officially survived 2 full days without carbs. If you knew me, you would understand just how amazing this is. I have been moaning and groaning about the 10 pounds that I gained post-wedding, for nearly 2 years now...but for the life of me, I can't seem to make it past 3 o'clock when I start a diet. Anyway, since misery loves company, I thought that I would post about this lovely little bakery in LA, called Buttercake Bakery, that one of our readers emailed me about.

I love that their baked goods aren't too perfect, or too designed...they remind me of stuff that Mom (okay, not my mom, per se) made growing up.

Buttercup_bakery

The girls at Buttercake Bakery are happy and able to ship out their oh-so-good treats anywhere in the country (extra charges will apply).  How perfect would these be for favors, served with a piping hot cup of coffee?  I am imagining those cute heart cookies in white handkerchiefs, secured with bakery twine wrapped a few times around the center. Then, a letterpressed note attached (or handwritten in red ink) that says, "from our hearts to yours." Cheesy? Or cute?

Cakes are $12 for a 5" round and $30.00 for a 9" round. Cookies and scones are around $1.50, bars start at $2.25, cupcakes are around $2.00, tarts are $20.00 for an 8" and $30.00 for a 10". Buttercake Bakery also puts together gift baskets filled with their goodies, that start at $27.50.

Wedding Inspiration by Miette

update...congrats to Kate for winning the blog design contest! I will have another design up this week and another chance to win!

I was perusing some of my favorite wedding cake sites over the weekend (trying to find the perfect cake for an upcoming inspiration board), when I discovered Miette's online store. For those of you that don't live in the San Francisco area, Miette is this insanely beautiful bakery that serves baked goods for anything and everything...from pretty candies to simple, perfect cakes.

Anyway, I was delighted to see that Miette is now offering some of their goodies online. And, I was even more delighted to see the gorgeous pictures of store. Since we were talking about color palettes last week, I thought that these would be great color inspiration for a Spring or Summer affair...

Miette_bakery2

I love how cheerful the store is...and if you are going for a Martha Stewart-esque, vintage chic wedding...these pretty colors would be the perfect palette.

April 20, 2007

Potluck Studios

I have had so many inquiries about cake accessories...it seems to be a running dilemma among brides! As I was looking for some interesting ideas, I stumbled upon these super chic cake stands by Potluck Studios that I simply had to tell you about...

Pot_luck_studios_2

They come in three different sizes and four colors, ranging in price from $28-60. I don't think that they are quite large enough for a wedding of 200 +, but many bakers can build your cake up rather than out to accommodate a smaller stand. Do you love them as much as I do?

I am doing lots of cake accessory research these next few days and will hopefully have some really great, unique sources (read...not your standard, silver tiered cake stand) for stands and toppers. For now, go devour Potluck Studios...it will probably keep you happy for quite some time.

Have a great weekend!

April 13, 2007

Sprinkles Cupcakes

Well, apparently the whole world discovered Sprinkles Cupcakes before I did...but, that isn't going to stop me from going completely nuts over them. Sprinkles Cupcakes, originally based in Beverly Hills, makes the most head-over-heels adorable cupcakes...and I use the word cupcakes lightly because I am just not sure that it does these little treasures justice.

Sprinkles

Ummm...yeah. They are that cute. For wedding favors, put these treats in clear, acetate boxes with a thick chocolate ribbon wrap around the center of the box, and a pretty, customized label placed over the ribbon with the words...."made especially for you...with love, Tait and Abby (insert bride and groom)." The perfect favor in my opinion.

To make the customized label, all you need is a computer, a color printer and a little bit of patience...

1. First, pick up these great labels at Paper-Source...they have tons of colors to choose from and a few creative sizes. The best part is that they  are set up so that you can easily format them to the pre-designed label settings on your computer. If you choose the circle labels, all you have to do is click on the Microsoft Word template that they provide on their site.

2. Next, set up a Word document to the specifications that paper-source provides (see step 1), or click on the provided template.

3. Type your text on 2 lines..."Made especially for you..." on the first line, and "with love, bride and groom" on the second. Try to use 2 great fonts, a script and a block, to bring in more of a designed quality (Edwardian for the script and Century Gothic for the block are great, and are usually available on all computers). Choose a color that is at least 2 shades darker than the paper, then center your text.

4. Next, print them! Try to use the highest quality print setting so that you achieve a crisp, clear text. These settings vary depending on the type of printer you have. For Epson users, I recommend the "best photo" setting.

Labels

Easy as pie! Of course this is the most basic label layout, so definitely try experimenting with lined borders, single letter monograms and accents to complete the look. The key to printing or customizing things on your own is simplicity. Think minimalist.

Bouvet Rose Champagne

Bouvet_rose_2 I found this fabulous find while perusing the Splendora blog the other day. For those of you that don't know, Splendora is THE authority on everything fabulous. They profile the latest and greatest in San Francisco, New York and Los Angeles, always managing to find the best boutiques, newest trends and restaurants WAY before anyone else does. In a word, they are brilliant.

Anyway, I loved this particular find because to me...champagne is the epitome of luxury, of elegance, of celebration. A good champagne can turn a party into a chic affair, and yet a bad champagne can turn a a chic affair into a frat party. In all honesty though, how many people can afford to stock a bar with Dom Perignon? Not me, that's for sure.

So I love that the girls over at Splendora found this beautiful and oh-so-affordable champagne, Bouvet Rose. At $12 a bottle and nearly as good as the pricier versions, ummm...hello?? How much better can you get!

Mini Cakes or Cupcakes?

I know that cupcakes, in lieu of wedding cakes, were so 2 years ago...but, I love them. I just can't help it. There are such adorable creations out there these days, I am just wondering if cupcakes are here to stay? Has the mini-cake taken it's place in the world of cake trends? What do you think...I would love to hear your comments! And, if you know of a particularly great vendor for any of type of cake, we are starting to build a vendor referral category.

Here are some of the most beautiful Kylie Lambert cupcakes...

Edible Favors

Favors seem to have come a LONG way from your standard Jordan almonds haven’t they? It is amazing how extravagant the favors can get at weddings these days. Let’s see, I have received silver fortune cookies with personalized messages inside, jeweled Chinese slippers to “dance the night away,” monogrammed chocolates, customized mini photo albums and even bottles of champagne (okay, well that was from my own wedding so I guess it doesn’t count). Bottom line, favors are becoming more and more personal, and more and more extravagant.

First, lets look at the trends in food favors…No one, and I mean no one, does this better than my best friend, Martha. Take a look at these oh-so-adorable sweet treats that Martha is featuring on her site this month.

msedit.jpg

Ummm, yeah. I could die, they are so completely adorable. If she does anything really well, Martha teaches us that you can be crafty AND elegant at the same time. It is all about choosing favors that have personal meaning or are native to the area that you are being married. When you pair that, with simple, sophisticated packaging (key word here people is SIMPLE), you typically have a homerun.

The thing with Martha though is that it takes a pretty patient, crafty person to really see her ideas to fruition. Even if you are the most creative and artsy bride, really hand involved favors can be time consuming, sometimes overly expensive (because of all the little parts that make the whole) and even more often, a bit impractical. We tried to do something similar at our wedding with these darling little bakery bags and my favorite chocolate chip oatmeal cookies. We took hours stuffing these little bags as delicately as possible, taking extra care not to wrinkle or crush them. Flash forward to my wedding reception…I walked in to find that the hotel had not given them quite as much care and attention as we had, crushing all of the perfect little bags, then lazily plopping them down on the table. UGH. Bottom line, sometimes, the lovely ideas that we have for our favors, aren’t always the best or most practical routes.

So here are some great ideas for ready-made food favors …

ready-made-favors-2.jpg

Top Row: First 2 from left, brides.com, 3rd on right from MarieBelle; Bottom Row: left photo by Richart , Center and Left by Coco Designs

And finally, Brides.com came up with this great idea list for the budget-minded bride. Although you have heard some of them before, I think that it’s got some good ideas. I am adding some links with great sources to make the list even more useful! Oh, and I took off some of those that weren’t that great. You can see the full list here.

Hands On

Draw guests out of their chairs with a candy buffet or bakery cart. These interactive stations allow guests to fill favor bags (or pastry boxes) with the treats of their choice. *You can find great favor bags, pastry boxes, organza bags, clear bags, etc. at Nashville Wraps. Check out the incredible candy selection at Dylan's Candy Bar in NY or for the budget minded, Sweet Nostalgia.

Double Duty

Choose favors that also serve as place cards, or even centerpieces, to save money. Think small wrapped boxes of chocolate that you can stack as centerpieces, or labeled Champagne bottles that double as place cards. I was thinking the other day that a cute centerpiece would be to stack vintage champagne saucers in the center of each table. How cute is this to compliment the champagne bottles as place cards idea! Beacoup.com has the most enormous selection of favors. Check out the mini champagne buckets that are good place card holders (and you can overflow with chocolates), the petite mint julep cups (perfect for a single truffle tucked inside) and the silver ice cream scoops (then the food theme can be taken home with them).

Classic Favorite

Cookies. Think cutouts that match a blossom in your bouquet. In many cases, these sweet bites can be designed by your confectioner. Here are some INSANELY cute cookies that can be ordered online. They are perfect because they come complete with adorable custom packaging (complete with a picture of your choice) and can be shipped anywhere in the country! They can also be personalized with your initials...

Eco-friendly

Family Bonding

Bake cookies with mom, enlist bridesmaids to help fill clear boxes with Jordan albums or craft Christmas stockings with grandma. Cocoa Designs creates thee amazing little cocoa-covered nuts that are a perfect substitution for the Jordan Almond. The description on their website says "A little jaggedy and ill shaped, Cocoa Nuts have an unexpected crunch, they get your hands all messy when you eat them and they are definitely not fancy like truffles or chocolate confections. " I love that!

Win-win favors

You can never go wrong with chocolate. But don’t forget less traditional (and less expensive) sweets that can make a lasting impression, such as taffy sticks or caramels. Buy the sweet stuff at candywarehouse.com. Dean and Deluca have some amazing candies though if you are on a tighter budget, check out the old-fashioned candy sticks at the candy warehouse, the adorable salt water taffy at Sea Shore Taffy and the "a-little-bit-expensive, but oh-so-perfect" sea salt caramels at the Little Flower Candy Company.

Give guests a growing favor, such as potted herbs, to cook with at home. I love a favor that can actually be used, and not simply devoured on the car ride home. If you adorn the pot with a handwritten note or your favorite herb recipe, it adds a really personal touch. To save even more money, although it might be a bit time consuming, you can make your own!

I think that with favors, the most important thing to remember is this…by the time your guests have fallen back in love again while watching your ceremony, devoured a delicious meal that they didn’t have to pay for, drank from numerous glasses of champagne, wine and cosmopolitans, and danced the night away…they most likely won’t be thinking too much about what kind of favor you have chosen. So, in my opinion, the favor should really only be used if it adds another dimension, or a unique and pretty feel to the wedding. If you can’t afford to, or simply don’t have the time to, design a lovely favor…skip it! And don’t look back.
