Cake Stands

What is a great cake without a pretty way to display it? Since I started writing this blog, I have spent hours scouring the internet for great cake stand sources and I have found some absolutely beautiful pieces. These, by Pleasing Pantry,  are so pretty it's almost sinful to put anything on them...

Cake_stands_by_pleasing_pantry

I love the delicate antique designs. So feminine and elegant. These would look absolutely gorgeous set up in a collection of sizes with pretty little cakes displayed together. Actually, any of these cake stands below would look great set up the same way...

Cake_stands

Top Row, Left to Right: Noir Cake Stands  and White Cake Stands by Rosanna, Black Cake Stands by Ballard Designs / Center Row: Stands by Clara French / Bottom Row, Left to Right: Pink Stand on Ebay, Silver Stands on Ballard Designs, White Stands by Martha Stewart at Macy's

I even recently saw this brilliant idea for DIY cake stands over on Design*Sponge....

Cake_stands_by_design_sponge

How cute are those, by the way? See the full article on how to make your own stand right here!

And yet, even though I've found some absolutely gorgeous stands, I am still in need of more sources! Many of the prettiest cake stands are too small for a standard wedding cake. They might not hold the weight that a wedding cake for 200 demands. So, I am putting the question out to our SMP readers...What are your favorite sources for cake stands??

Designs by Wiggy Flowers

The next designer that we are featuring on Design*Sponge is the ever talented, Catherine Conlin of Wiggy Flowers in San Francisco. What I love about Catherine is that her passion for design and color comes through in everything she does...from the gorgeous studio she  designed to the absolutely breathtaking florals that she puts her heart and soul into...

Wiggy_flowers

These gorgeous photos were shot by the oh-so-talented Kate Webber and Lauri Levenfeld of Zoom Photography...Kate will be shooting full time with Zoom starting this month and it seems that they are adding quite a talent to the team!

Lauri and Catherine often work hand in hand on weddings, which generally makes for absolutely spectacular, and oh-so-colorful images. But for me, it's the gorgeous black and whites that Lauri produces that are so incredibly captivating...

Thanks to both Lauri and Catherine for sharing their creativity and their imagination with us!

Wedding Details by the MacBeth Collection

I completely love these storage containers by The MacBeth Collection, that my dear friend Heidi at Spitfiregirl Design told me about. As a side note, Heidi is also doing the re-design on the new Style Me Pretty site which I seriously cannot wait to show you guys. Anyway, we've been talking today about adding pretty details to your wedding without breaking the bank and these tins would do that to perfection...

The_macbeth_collection

How great would that large bucket be for holding bottles of beer, wine or champagne? Or even a pile of flip flops for your female guests to use at the reception. The trays would be great for holding escort cards (just fill the bottom with a bit of sand or something similar and tuck your cards in neatly). The little votive holders, aside from the obvious use for candles, would make great packaging for wedding favors. The tin boxes would be ideal packaging for in-room welcome baskets...oh, I could go ON and ON!!

Now for the best part...you can customize each piece with your own great pattern, and perhaps even a chic monogram or icon...

The_macbeth_collection_2

I absolutely love this stuff! Although the items are a little pricier than our last batch of wedding detail ideas, you don't need a lot to make a huge impact. Since the patterns and colors are so vibrant, you just need a few accent pieces to really liven up your palette. Love it!!

Wedding Details by Luna Bazaar

I hope everyone had a great weekend!

You know, as we post more and more real weddings, it's becoming really clear that those weddings where the details are tended to, really capture the hearts of our readers. Whether your budget is $5,000 or $50,000, guests delight in those perfect details...those thoughtful, and yet approachable, touches that make a wedding completely unique.

So, I'm always on the hunt for sources that sell great accouterments at a reasonable cost. I have a few to share with you today that have so many lovely accessories that will add that magical touch to your big day...

Luna_bazaar
I am kind of obsessed with the wares found at Luna Bazaar...painted paper lanterns, rice paper tea light holders, fans, party lights, vintage votive holders. They have all of your standard party decor items and SO MUCH MORE. I love all of the hand painted items, like that great paper lantern in the top right corner. So chic, so much personality.

Here are some ideas as to how you can incorporate these pretty details...

If you're having an outdoor ceremony, hang five to ten paper lanterns among the trees. You don't even need to have them light up, to get that festive, romantic effect. With each lantern being $9.25, you can make a huge impact for less than $100. Pretty good.

For a Spring or Summer wedding, place a colored, paper fan on each person's seat at your ceremony. When the guests are using them, you add a pop of color to your decor, without having to spend additional money on florals or expensive touches. These paper fans start at $1.25.

Tea light holders, particularly the rice paper varieties, are perfect for large spaces...lining both sides of a path, along a garden wall, clumped together in a variety of colors and sizes on cocktail tables. Again, a completely affordable way to add a splash of color and a great impact.

Fill a vintage tin bucket or a wicker basket with white parasols that you and your girlfriends have hand-painted. I was at a wedding last weekend where the bride had done this using yellow paint (and we aren't talking masterpiece paintings here, just fun, whimsical designs in one cohesive color). The pictures are going to be so completely adorable with guests donning pretty parasols.

For indoor weddings, use the lanterns and candle holders as table decor. They work great clumped in different sizes, placed on the bar or scattered throughout a buffet table. If you buy smaller paper lanterns, they could also be used for actual centerpieces. Use floral decor on 1/2 of the tables, then place a cluster of 3 paper lanterns with a glass contained candle inside, on the other 1/2 of the tables. Super cute.

So now, I'm dying to know...what are your best ideas for adding inexpensive touches to your wedding style??

Eco-Chic Wedding by Violet Designs

The week is winding down and I figure what could be better than finishing it with a few more real weddings. If yesterday's wedding was sweet and sophisticated, this next wedding is vibrant and fresh in a beautifully organic way. The amazing florals were designed by Traci at Violet Designs in Boston...

Real_wedding_by_violet_designs_2

The oh-so-cute bride, Miya, has offered to share some of the details from her wedding as well as little tidbits of advice that every bride will love...

When we first got engaged, we thought a lot about the kind of feel that we wanted for our wedding.  Essentially, it came down to the fact that we wanted a wedding that people would be excited to come to, and where we would have a chance to hang out with our friends and families for the weekend.  Since our families and friends are dispersed across the country, we wanted to find a place where people could spend time together without feeling like the wedding was overshadowing everything.  I also wanted to showcase my home state (California): this meant bright colors, a laid-back attitude, western and Asian influences, and, of course, concern for the environment.

During the planning process, I was fairly adamant about my belief that an event like a wedding shouldn't be an excuse to abandon environmental ethics.  We used only 100% post-consumer content recycled paper, and we kept our paper consumption to a minimum by having people RSVP by email, and instead  of sending information about the area via mail, we replied to RSVPs with a guide to the wine country that we put together as a pdf attachment.  We also chose a venue that served local and organic food, and served fish and vegetarian options. That said, you can never make an event to this scale as environmentally friendly as you want, but you can certainly make little tweaks here and there (use soy candles instead of paraffin, use recycled or cotton paper, cut down on the paper that you use, use local and/or organic ingredients, rent from local companies) that can, added up, make a big difference.

I also included a lot of DIY touches...I sewed the panels for the canopy that we were married under, I made the groomsmen's and bridesmen's ties, I made the jewelry for the bridesmaids and groomsmaid, made my veil, and designed and printed the invitations, programs, and favors.  My dad made the structure to hang the panels for the canopy out of bamboo that had grown in the front yard of my childhood home.

Though ceremonies are often overlooked, ours was very unique and very DIY.  Our great friend, appropriately named JC, agreed to marry us, and spend enormous amounts of time helping us plan the ceremony.  We wanted to honor the fact that marriages are not just between two people, but occur within a network of family and friends. Instead of having readings on the meaning of marriage, we had our family members speak about what they had learned in their marriages. We had advice from couples who had been married from less than a year to over thirty years.  Then, one at a time, they stood up again, and asked us whether we promised to uphold the advice that they had just given us.  For example, my parents' advice was...

"Continue to make time and space for fun in your everyday life together - keep looking for ways to be playful, as often as you can, and laugh until you fall over.  Be courageous for each other and together.  Remember that small, daily personal  acts of courage build a foundation to fall back upon when life gives you a choice requiring a lot of courage.  Be kind to one another.  Be generous in your offers to bring coffee in the morning and to give the first foot rub at night.  Bring home ice cream for no reason.  Hold your tongue if you are tired an cranky.  And remember that we are all just doing the best we can, even if it is hard to tell sometimes.  Most of all, just continue to be your wonderful selves and continue to believe in the mystery of love as it unfolds in its various forms for you over the years."

Then the vow that they offered was...

"Do you promise to laugh until you fall over, to be courageous, to be extravagant with small kindnesses, and to trust in the mysteries of life and love as they unfold?"

If I were to give one piece of advice to brides who are planning their weddings, it would be to think about what feel you want, and what your priorities are.  Once you nail these two things down, you can start to let go of the little things that people spend hundreds of hours obsessing about.  The feel that we aimed for was laid-back Californian, and our main priorities were that people feel at ease, and for the wedding to be fun. Once we had established that, the choice to hire a Hawaiian band to play before the ceremony and during our croquet/bocce cocktail hour was clear, as was the choice to forgo fancy napkins and crystal or not to have my hair/ make-up done.

Once your feel and priorities are nailed down, you can also think about where to hold your ground and where you can be more flexible.  We received, as a wedding present, a photo booth for the reception.  There were more than a few people who thought that this was a terrible idea, and that we should be registering for as much china and for as many kitchen goods as we could.  The truth is, however, that we live in a tiny one-bedroom in Manhattan, and that we really have no use for china and kitchen goods past a certain point. I am glad that I stuck to my guns on this one, because the photos from that booth will be the first thing that I save if my house ever burns down.

Nailing down a feel for your wedding and priorities also lets you pick vendors who will make your wedding spectacular.  I was very lucky to find Traci for a florist- she has a similar aesthetic as I do, and executed everything perfectly without me having to worry about whether her work would be right.  The minute I saw her portfolio, I knew that she would achieve the organic, fun vibe that I was aiming for. I was also drawn to the style of my photographer, Randy Parsons, as she tends to focus on the people at the wedding rather than the details.

The other thing that I would tell brides to be is to  remember that once you have a date picked, no matter what disasters happen leading up to or on the day of the wedding, you end up married at the end of the day, and that's pretty much the best thing about any wedding anyway.  Of course, everyone wants to have a perfect wedding, but if you just remind yourself that your marriage matters more than your wedding, then your wedding will seem perfect no matter what happens.

Miya has a great blog that you should check out when you have a minute. And, definitely spend some time perusing Violet Designs site, as Traci has created some absolutely beautiful, completely inspiring designs.

Spring Inspiration

We had one fleeting day of Spring in Boston yesterday...you know, that perfect 70 degree weather, not a cloud in the sky. Notice the word fleeting, as the temperature is dropping as we speak and the clouds are moving in for a rainy weekend. But, even if we only felt it for a minute, Spring is definitely on it's way!

I thought that I would kick-off your weekend with some seriously beautiful Spring inspiration from Rosenow Floral Design in San Francisco. Erin Rosenow just opened this gorgeous little shop and it's clear that she is all talent...

Rosenow_floral_orange

Oh my goodness, I am just in love with these colors. A perfect mix of orange, pinks and peaches...absolutely lovely. And, this next set of pink florals is so feminine, so flirty, so chic...

Rosenow_floral_pink

Those peonies are enough to send any girl over the edge, right? Okay, how about a shot of yellow? Yellow is so "right now" and I have to admit, I hope it sticks around a while!

Rosenow_floral_yellow

Thank you so much, Erin, for sharing these gorgeous pictures with us. Although Erin is based in San Francisco, she will happily travel. If hiring a florist is out of your budget, you MUST look at the Rosenow Floral Design site for tons of color inspiration, floral ideas and really unique designs!

Jessica Rust Designs

One of my very favorite artists, Jessica Rust of Rust Designs, just released her newest product and I HAD to share it with you!!

Jessica_rust

Isn't this new gold accented line just beautiful? I have been a huge fan of Jessica's since my dear friend Cat of Cat Seto introduced me to her work about a year ago (as a side note, Cat has a GREAT blog you guys should check out if you haven't already). I love, love, love Jessica's delicate but oh-so-chic styles and honestly think that any of her wares would make the PERFECT wedding gift.

The best part? She recently launched an online gift registry so your guests can help you stock up on all of her beautiful pieces. Along with her dinnerware, Jessica also has a nice variety of serving pieces that would accent just about any fine china or everyday pieces. These are my personal favs...

Jessica_rust_designs

Come to think of it, I'm kind of obsessed with ALL of Jessica's designs. The silhouettes are just about the greatest thing I have ever seen and the gold accented limited edition bowls are absolutely stunning (my best friend Katie ordered these for her parents as a gift and they were kind of amazing). Each piece that Jessica creates is understated and yet so personal. I just love that.

Wedding Flowers by Ameleah

I have had so many requests for additional photos of Ameleah's flowers, I thought that I would gather them up from previous posts and put them together so that you could see the overall style of the floral decor. Ameleah has also supplied a few more images for us, as well!

Real_wedding_amehlia_4

Thank you so much, Ameleah, for sharing this incredible wedding with us! I think that you have found your calling as a floral and event designer!

Wedding Flowers by Studio del Fiore

When Lisa Martin, at Studio del Fiore, sent me these pictures from a recent wedding that she helped design...I literally started clapping. Sounds strange, I know. But sometimes, when I see a wedding that is just this chic, I get really excited! I am totally smitten with this look. That gorgeous dress, the insanely unique color palette, the whole nine yards...

Wedding_flowers_studio_del_fiore

gorgeous images by Jasmine Photography

Here are some details that Lisa sent me...

Mike & Nicole Morris tied the knot on 9.1.07!

These two have a funny history. Originally Mike was to be set up with a co-workers friend, which was a bust. But being that Mike was new to the area, he was looking for a new place to rent and ended up renting a room from the co-workers friend. Which brings Nicole into the picture... she was the girl next door. Before they knew it those little talks on the porch became dinner and movies and so on..the rest is wedding history!

The ceremony/reception site was at the Oregon Historical Society. It's a great spot for a downtown wedding, with a great patio for a ceremony and reception site. They headed across the street to the park blocks for some family pics.  Nicole wanted to be a typical bride and be a princess, but did not want the typical princess dress-  She opted for a super funky dress that fit her personality.

Same for the flowers, she wanted something modern and funky with flair. Using the vibrant Green and Orange as her color pallet, her bouquet was a mix of Celosia, Spicy & Sweet Akito Roses, Cymbidium Orchids and Brunia.

I am dorking out, I know...but YAY! I love this wedding! Thanks so much, Lisa for sharing!!

Wedding Flowers by Tapestry Flowers

Since this morning's wedding was so bright and cheerful, which we all need a little dose of now and then, I wanted to keep the lighthearted inspiration going. This wedding, with florals designed by Tapestry Flowers, is just so pretty. The bright yellows, greens and pure whites seem to make the beauty of the day crystal clear...

Tapestry_flowers_3_2

from Karen, designer at Tapestry Flowers...

The wedding was at a private estate in Napa Valley, CA, photographed by Kirstie Tweed (Orange Girl Photographs) from Banff Canada. The bride and groom really wanted unconventional and whimsical flowers. We did the ceremony in all bright citrus yellow, with two 8' tall obelisks made completely from layers of yellow flowers. The aisle was lined with thousands of piled high lemons and the bride had a hand-painted lemon aisle runner custom made.
The cocktails were lemons and limes, and the little cocktail arrangement of craspedia was filled with sliced open lemons.  Guest found their tables from luggage tags tucked in flower filled mini suitcases. The reception tables featured paved layered square centerpieces in lemons, limes and oranges, topped with a neat flower ball with a poof of feathers.

I so wish that I had been a guest at this wedding. It just seems like the perfect way to celebrate on a Spring or Summer afternoon. What I really love about this wedding (and the one featured earlier today) is the sheer innovation behind the gorgeous designs. I rarely see such beautiful, bright colors interpreted in such a  chic and unique way. Hats off to Tapestry Flowers!

Wedding Flowers by Tapestry Flowers

Spring is in the air! Okay, it's still in the thirties here in Boston, but I am trying to stay positive. So, what better way to celebrate spring, than to feature a yellow and white inspired wedding! Such a fresh and pretty palette, you can't help but smile.

Karen Axel, at Tapestry Flowers, is one of my favorite florists. Her work is so fresh...playful when it should be, while still being oh-so-elegant and chic. You can see that TLC went into each and every piece that she designs...

Tapestry_flowers

Isn't the yellow palette just perfect? It's lighthearted and yet screams sophistication. This wedding took place in Half Moon Bay, California where the air is always crisp and the surroundings are stunning. Ha Le Events planned the day, while Michelle Walker photographed these lovely florals.

Where the ceremony decor was sweet and elegant, check out the reception decor...

Tapestry_flowers_2

It's so fun and lively! I am a huge fan of the japanese lanterns for any decor, particularly this one. The centerpieces are amazing, with the citrus accents and blocks of color. And can we talk about the table chandeliers dripping with flowers?  Um, amazing.

I have one more wedding from Karen at Tapestry so stay tuned! In the meantime, check out Tapestry's website...it's filled with stunning color palettes and brilliant decor ideas.

Tablescapes by Alice Charlier

After spending the morning pouring through the Alice Charlier Events site, I have decided that these two tablescapes are my favorite of her online designs...

French_garden_tablescape_3

This first design is so lovely...a table that I would want to sit at for hours, eating warm french country cuisine...surrounded by candlelight, laughing with friends and family. This look is so dreamy and so romantic, and yet completely doable.

French_elegant_tablescape

This palette screams elegance. The silk neutral colored linens, the gold chivari chairs, the perfect white roses set off so nicely with the earthy hydrangeas. I am madly in love with this particular table. And the starfish. Oh the starfish. So chic, and yet so simple.

I have two more tables from Alice Charlier that I want to share with you in a little bit! These two, a bit more for inspiration than practicality.

Green Wedding Tables

Alice Charlier, an event planner based out of Los Angeles, just sent me these magazine-worthy images from a recent eco-friendly wedding that she did...

Green_wedding_tablescape

I looooove the use of mason jars and tin cans...somehow, Alice manages to make everyday objects seem chic and dare I say, expensive?  The best thing about these table details is the cohesive way that each object is brought together. Alice uses essentially a hodge-podge of different colors, textures, and everyday pieces that when brought together, create a completely inviting and warm environment.

Check back for more from Alice Charlier Events!

Floral Ideas by Laura Dowling

Here is a bit more from Laura Dowling, on Parisian Floral Wedding Trends...

Laura_dowling_2_2

Haute couture bouquets.  Catherine Műller, who formerly served as creative director for legendary French florist Christian Tortu, teaches the “haute couture” style in her chic new Parisian studio.  Her bridal bouquets are characterized by a lavish use of exquisite flowers, intricate details, and elaborately decorated stems. These special bouquets are little jewel-like works of art that are at once striking and delicate.  In class we made the Bouquet Chanel, featuring all white flowers – white calla lilies, roses, ranunculas, and phaleonopsis orchids, tied with ivy.  We decorated the stems with variegated lily grass, woven into a basket-weave pattern, finished by a single, perfect phaleonopsis orchid.   Trés chic!

Color schemes.   Color trends for French bouquets typically take their cue from the runways of Paris, the fashion capital of the world.  For spring 2008, en vogue color combinations are purple and icy pink, fuchsia paired with vermillion red, and gentle pastels with metallic touches in mink, sand, or shell hues.  The French also love white flowers and know that you can’t go wrong with floral bouquets in shades of white and green.  A new twist is the scheme of white, silver and crystal, featuring layers of white on white decorations and flowers, silver and crystal accents, and transparent glass.  Lime green is a perennial favorite as is orange (Hérmes orange) combined with fuchsia (a la Christian Lacroix).

Overall, current bouquet trends run the entire spectrum from being highly structured bouquets with extraordinary detailing and flourishes – like the haute couture style – to being very natural and unstructured, as if the bouquet is coming from the field or garden and the flowers are springing up from the base.  The latter trend of an au natural style is the dominant trend in Paris, and is often juxtaposed against stark, modern backdrops, producing surprising and exciting effects.

Check back for more gorgeous images from Laura's portfolio!

Floral Ideas by Laura Dowling

I am beyond thrilled that Laura Dowling, of Interieurs et Fleurs, is joining us today to share with us the trends and ideas that she learned from her recent floral study trip in Paris. I am going to hand the baton right over to Laura, as I don't want to waste a second of time...

Fleur Couture – New Designs and Trends from Paris.

Laura_dowling

Bonjour! And Bonne Annee!  Having recently returned from a floral study trip to Paris, I wanted to share with you some inspiring new bouquet ideas as well as fabulous new design trends for Parisian-inspired floral décor in 2008.  I love how the top Parisian fleuristes follow trends in fashion and interior design, and how their creations evoke such excitement and emotion.  I am grateful to my friends at L’Ecole des Fleurs for sharing their special secrets with me for creating “l’art du bouquet.”   Here are some au courant Parisian trends to look for in party and event décor this year:

Mirrors.  Mirrored cubes and pedestals are all the rage in Paris right now and provide the perfect foil for flowers and candles.  I spotted chic mirrored cubes, used as vases for flowers, everywhere:  from the swank Georges V Hotel to the luxe shops on the Avenue Montaigne.  Set a flickering votive candle in front of a mirrored floral arrangement of garden roses and trailing ivy  – magique!

Vignettes de table. A major Parisian floral trend is the use of multiple glass cubes of different sizes and heights, combined with candles and natural elements to create distinctive garden-style landscapes.   For this concept, simply place four tall, rectangular bud vases at each corner of a 12 inch glass cube vase, and add a shallow base of water.  Place a single flower stem in each bud vase and float petals on top of the water.  Voila!

Bouquets classique.  In his ultra-chic boutique in St. Germain du Pres, Remi Guenin, artistic director of L’Ecole des Fleurs, demonstrated how to make a classic wedding bouquet “a la francaise.”  He used a combination of large pink garden roses, pale pink ranunculas, and green viburnum, interspersed with spiky sage foliage.  After tying these flowers together with raffia, he took large, soft platycerium leaves and wrapped them artfully around the stems, creating a beautiful, natural covering that offset the flowers exquisitely.  The use of plant material to decorate the stems is a hallmark of French design, and adds a poetic element to the entire composition.  Click here, then do a search for “Les Fleurs de Paris” to see examples of the classic Parisian wedding bouquet. Here are some images...

Stay tuned for MORE great ideas, and a ton of stunning images of Laura's work!

Aren't they great? The founders, Aimee Aikens and Kristen Yeates, started this company because they saw a true need for environmentally friendly, but chic and stylish products that are used to celebrate weddings, showers, business ventures or just a really beautiful gift to a friend. Everything is made organically using the finest ingredients. I love that.

Wedding Flowers by Rufus Felix

This past weekend, I flew to Dallas to my very best friend's wedding. And honestly, if I had to do it over again, I might design a wedding just like hers. It was perfect. Beyond perfect...budget perfect. Next week I am going to post all of the pictures and go into detail about some of the fun things that she did, but for now, I wanted to highlight one particular vendor from her wedding.

Rufus Felix, florist and event designer, designed what I would probably say, is the most beautiful bouquet I have ever seen. It was vintage, it was chic, it completed her look to perfection.  I'll show you pictures next week, but here are some highlights from their site...

Rufus_felix

It's company's like Rufus Felix that lead me to create our new Little Black Book. They are small, intimate design firms that although they might not be known in all of Dallas as the go-to source, they shine because they really listen to what their client wants. They spend the time getting to know their customer, checking out the venues, understanding the overall feel...and they deliver something that literally brings tears to the bride's eyes. I wanted these companies to sit right along side those that are written about in magazines. I wanted to show you that the best florist or cake designer isn't always the most well known, but rather the one that your best friend recommends because they truly made her wedding beautiful.

If you haven't already, take some time today to sift through the vendors on our Little Black Book, even the cities that don't apply to you. There is so much inspiration, so many ideas, so many creative resources. And, it's only just begun!!! We are adding vendors as we speak...some that you've heard of, others that are new to scene. All brilliant.

Jessica Rust Serving Pieces

A few months ago we posted about the amazingly talented Jessica Rust and readers went absolutely crazy for her work. Since then, I have seen Jessica's designs all over the place...Grace at Design*Sponge mentioned them, Poppytalk Handmade features them on her web store, Jennifer over at Hostess Blog wrote about her. The nods of approval are endless.

And so, I thought a Jessica Rust original was just the ticket to convince you to enter our latest contest. For one lucky reader, this absolutely beautiful, make-your-friends-completely-jealous serving bowl will be all yours! All you have to do is answer one simple question...

Jessica_rust

(These Limited Edition Birch Serving Bowls and the Limited Edition Love Bird II Serving Bowls are completely, over-the-top gorgeous. Only 50 of these babies will ever be made, so if you love them as much as I do, and can't wait to find out if you are the winner, I would buy one today. Each bowl features 14K gold luster on the exterior and will be numbered and signed...a true keepsake.)

Here is the question...how has the Internet, specifically blogs, changed the way that you approach your own wedding?  That's it. Simple as that. We are going to close the contest on Friday afternoon, so put your thinking caps on (cheesy, I know).

Wedding Details by Etsy

It's official. The day is shot. I have spent a solid four hours pouring over one of my favorite sites, Etsy. What I love about this site is that not only can you find tons of handmade wares by indie designers, you can also find some pretty amazing collectors items that are absolutely perfect for your wedding decor. Take these "vases" for example...

Etsy

Top Row: Vintage Silver Trophy, Robin's Egg Blue Creamer; Middle Row: Gold Pitcher, White Porcelain Pourers; Bottom Row: Vintage Milk Bottles, Handmade Ceramic Bowls

They could be used for a single, puffy peony or a small bouquet of fresh-from-the-garden flowers. You could place the bud of a cabbage rose in the rustic, golden bowls or a bundle of creamy white ranuculas in the vintage trophy. These images barely, just barely crack the surface of the great finds on Etsy. If you are struggling as to how to add a bit of personality and texture to your wedding, consider collecting vases like these rather than renting from your florist.

At my own wedding, we did this with old mint julep cups and cut crystal that we found on ebay. At the end of the evening, we encouraged guests to take them home them. Everyone was completely over the moon. Just last weekend (2 years after the actual wedding), I was having dinner with one of my cousins who brought up the monogrammed silver julep cup that she got at my wedding. She keeps crayons for her kids in it! I love that!

Wedding Details on Etsy

My day is being wasted scouring Etsy for more fun reception decor ideas (thanks to the oh-so-cuteness that is happening at Small Stump). So, rather than feeling bad about it, I am just going to call it market research and pass my finds along to you. These are journaling tags that would be so cute as table cards!

Etsy_1

If you punched a hold at the top, then hung them from pretty grosgrain ribbon on a cork board or from tree branches (something kind of organic to contrast the preppy factor of the cards), they would be a perfect way to add a little lighthearted color to your decor. Make them extra cute by handwriting the names and table numbers!

Along that same note, these silhouette tags are completely adorable. I am picturing them hanging from a strawberry pink ribbon, names & table numbers scrolled across the front. Too cutesy?

Etsy_2

And these tags, are just too perfect. I know that they could be used for something great...

Etsy_3

Place cards would be the obvious choice, but what else?  Can you guys think of anything else? What about food or dessert tags specifying what each item is. Or little thank you notes tied onto your favors.

Check back a little later for some other great Etsy finds!!

Wedding Details by Small Stump

My best friend Katie, whose getting married in a couple of weeks, decided to do centerpieces based around those perfect birch bark vases by Small Stump that OhJoy! featured a while back. They are amazing. Well, as it turns out, the whole world thought they were pretty amazing too and they sold like hotcakes. Katie eventually found a set on Ebay, but has been dying for more.

As luck would have it, I emailed Jill at Small Stump a day before she got her next shipment in of these little gems. YAY! So, of course, we stocked up on them. And now that we have ours for Katie's wedding (I know it's hugely selfish, but) ...I wanted to share the wealth.

The vases are $28 for a set of five (varying heights). Hurry though...I have a sneaking suspicion that these won't last long.

And, if you have some time, spend a moment or two checking out the other GREAT wares at Small Stump. Really, she has some beautiful ideas for reception decor. Like these pieces of paper thin coral...

A few of these would be so gorgeous, resting on your guest book table...anywhere really. OR, check out these adorable bud vases (in either red or white)...

Jill and Lia certainly have an eye! Aside from all of the pretty little things above, they have a section of paper that is so beautiful. For a wedding, I love the celebration banner (how cute is that) and the silkscreened birds, which I think would be a nice idea for table "numbers."

Sunny Fall Flowers

I have already received a few emails from readers about the gorgeous flowers in the Christine Taylor style board below. The lovely creations were done be Valley Flora out of Napa Valley California...

Valley_flora

I love how they utilize color without seeming over the top. It goes to show that if used simply, with one or two types of flowers, color can be both sophisticated and classy. I am loving the all green bouquets. Paired with a chocolate brown dress, they would be completely perfect. Actually, my BFF Katie, is looking to do something similar for her own wedding!

Wedding Flowers and their Meaning

When I was choosing my wedding flowers, I knew only two things...they had to be monochromatic, and I really didn't like greenery. Other than that, I gave the florist a lot of room for creativity. Looking back, I really wish that I had known more so that I could articulate my exact vision. As I get further and further immersed into the wedding industry, I am realizing just how important flowers are to the overall look and feel of a wedding. If the flowers are overly abundant, the wedding seems regal and lavish. If they are fluffy and free-form, placed in a hodgepodge of vases, the wedding seems homey and romantic.

So, in an effort to educate myself a little more...as well as my readers, I wanted to post a little bit about flowers and their meaning. This list is from Martha, and I am sure that you have seen it before. But, there is nothing like a good refresher course on Monday morning.

The very most important thing to consider when choosing your wedding flowers...is choosing the right florist. Make sure you find someone who has the TIME and know-how to walk you through all of the little ins and outs of your wedding. They should show you (at the least) a portfolio or (even better) walk you through their shop to give you some different ideas for colors, shapes and varieties.

Flowers should make up 10% of your budget so try your hardest to not be talked into the more expensive varieties of flowers if your budget doesn't allow it. There are PLENTY of ways to achieve a magazine worthy spread without the high costs. Your florist should be open and willing to work with you on this and should have some great ideas as to how to translate a particular look, with your particular budget.

HouseMartin and Ink & Peat

My best friend, Katie, is obsessed with the HouseMartin blog. She is always emailing me various arrangements and home decor ideas that the writer features...and sure enough, I too, have become completely hooked. Her work is so incredibly inspiring, filled with such beautiful colors and textures. Not to mention, brilliant ideas for wedding decor.

So, after hours of mindless blog reading, I discovered that the writer is opening a retail store in the coming months. In the meantime, she is doing floral design through her company Ink &  Peat. The site is absolutely GORGEOUS and has some incredible ideas for wedding colors and floral decor. And, when you get all flowered out, check out her posts on antiquing...does it really get any better than this?

Angela Ligouri Ribbons

Angela  Liguori just emailed me the most beautiful pictures of her 100% cotton ribbons that she sells to paper boutiques around the country. Originally from Italy, Angela imports her ribbon from Rome thus each ribbon is exquisitely crafted. Since they are available in such a lovely variety of colors, these ribbons would work perfectly for favor packaging, trim for linens, to secure invitations...the options are endless!

Blumeboxes

Have you guys seen these great not-quite-vases, not-quite-boxes that are getting nods from some of the best people and publications out there? One of OUR readers, Whitney, is the co-owner and creator (along with her fiance) of these little gems called Blumeboxes. They come in a couple of different sizes, a great variety of super chic colors and complete with ribbon trims, boas and belly bands so that you can really customize your look. I love that they are an affordable but still stylish way to bring a little color to your table settings. PLUS...they are perfect for a green inspired wedding, as they are 100% recyclable. It's pure genius.

Blumebox

So what exactly is it, you ask? Whitney describes it far better than I would...

"A blumebox is an opportunity to add color and style to any floral bouquet...it is more than a vase or delivery box. It’s a gift box for flowers. Packaged flat to reduce storage space, a blumebox pops into shape in just seconds. Simply slip the durable water tight bag inside the blumebox, fill up with water and away you go! For those wanting to add some creative touches we encourage you to visit our photo gallery for some fun suggestions. When customizing your blumebox the sky is the limit. Ribbon, decals and tissue paper are just a few items that make for great decorating ideas!"

Personally, I really like the monochromatic look...10-20 blumeboxes all lined up down a long, distinctive table. Genius.

**Check back later today for another post! We are just getting started!

Anne Watkins & Wedding Graffiti

Update...a new fabulous find has been added to the top of this post today! Thought you might need a little pick-me-up on Monday afternoon:)

Fabulous Find: Wonderful Graffiti Wedding

I found this while scouring BFF Bridal the other day and thought that it was a great idea. For those of you that are in-the-know in terms of the design world, vinyl wall adhesives are SUPER hot right now. They are a great, temporary way to add a little flair to your walls, your ceiling or even your furniture. Thus, in my opinion, these babies were made for weddings.

Wonderful Grafitti Wedding makes beautiful, rather chic looking vinyl decals that can be customized to capture whatever look or feel you are going for, and placed on just about any surface imaginable.

Wedding_graffiti

Aren't the great? One tip...wonderful graffiti has a ton of design options, so don't let the wedding themes scare you off, if that isn't your shtick. They have styles to suit every type of person, from the contemporary to the whimsical.

Fabulous Find: Anne Watkins

Close your eyes and imagine this…you’ve spent hours upon hours having your make-up applied, your hair carefully pinned, your dress adjusted to perfection. The flowers that are sprinkled in every corner of the room are spectacular, the bridesmaids are sweetly tearing up as the minister welcomes you and all of your guests…and lucky you…you are standing before the man of your dreams, about to create a memory that you will tell your children and grandchildren about in years to come. And off in the corner, tucked just out of view, is a woman with an easel and a watercolor palette, capturing your moment with such beauty and grace, you would hardly know that it was being created just for you.

Anne Watkins is just that woman. She uses a paintbrush, rather than a camera, to record the most precious moments in a couple’s life. And let me just say, her work is beautiful. Really, really beautiful. Museum beautiful. She paints in such a delicate and abstract way, it’s as if you are looking at your dream of a wedding, rather than a photo. Her work evokes this incredible romantic quality, one that will make you forget about the food that your husband had on his chin all night, or that your mother was slow dancing to "lets get it on" with the minister.

Anne_watkins

"Anne Watkins is an artist who works from life, using a watercolor kit instead of a camera. Anne paints her subjects quickly and precisely, recording them without fuss or formal poses, capturing moments of their daily lives, whether the days are momentous or typical." - http://annewatkins.com/

Although seemingly extravagant, the thought of having an artist at your wedding, ready to capture your friends and family in a way that a camera simply can't, just seems like the most personal touch to me. The watercolors aren't cheesy or overdone, so your guests can hang them on their walls, rather than just stashing them in a photo album only to look at them here and there. Here are some other images of Anne's work...

I love these! Can't even tell you how much I love these!!!

Wishing "Wells"

This week is ALL about stationery...my first love (just don't tell my husband that). From guest book replacements, to invitations, to programs and menus, we are devoting the entire week to paper. Can life get any better than that? Seriously.

These little gems are the perfect replacement for the tired old guest book. Simply place a stack of note cards beside them, asking guests to write well wishes and words of wisdom for the happy couple.

Jars

(1. Moss, 2. Jayson Home and Garden, 3. Moss 4. Crate & Barrel, 5. Lillie  6. Horchow

Aren't they great!? I did a little digging and found some notecards that would go perfectly with each of these. I didn't coordinate the numbers because I think that depending on how bold you want to be, they are all really mix and matchable. If you are just not into this much color, crane makes a beautiful, gold edged menu card that would look great.

Stationery_3_1

(1. Kate Spade, 2. Carrot & Stick Press, 3. Elum, 4. & 5. Kate Spade, 6 & 7 Carrot and Stick Press)

Don't you just love really pretty stationery? I can't get enough of it and this is the perfect way to incorporate some fun colors, patterns and textures into your decor without going over the top.
