From the Bride… The hardest part of the planning process was finding the right location. Our families are all over the place: New York, Tennessee, Virginia, Florida, and the District of Columbia. Initially we wanted to get married on Fire Island in New York.  After a fun but hectic engagement party on Fire Island we decided that ferry schedules, no cars, no hotels, and no amenities was too logistically difficult for us and for our guests.  After that experience we decided that a wedding in Florida near my mother’s Hobe Sound home would be the best choice.  The challenge came in finding a venue in Florida that had the same casual classic tone as Fire Island.

We searched all of the west coast of Florida to find a site that felt personal and right.  At one very upscale and Palm Beach resort my fiancé asked if he should tuck in his shirt – I knew at that moment we weren’t in the right place.  We were delighted when we found The Medalist in Hobe Sound, FL.  We were so excited to find such a gem right in our backyard. The minute we walked onto their beautiful and large screened in porch with cedar shingles and marshland views we knew it was the right place for the reception.

The goal and focus from the very beginning was the comfort and enjoyment of our guests.  This meant making the wedding as much about them as it was about us.  During our two hour cocktail “hour” we offered plenty of indoor and outdoor seating, yummy food, cold drinks, fun games, and heartfelt memorabilia.  Guest could play on the putting green, take part in a game of cornhole, or have their picture taken at the photo booth.  The seating areas on the beautiful porch were arranged based on the places we have lived.  Each grouping included coffee table books about the city or state, yearbooks from our grade school, high school, and college years, and photo albums with pictures of all of our guests. People were thrilled to find themselves and then share the happy memories with each other.  One of my favorite moments was when my maid of honor read aloud the note she wrote to me in our 8th grade yearbook.

Dinner and dancing in the tent followed the same casual and classic rules.  Having only 100 people allowed us to see and celebrate with everyone.  It was not too crowded so people could sit and relax comfortably at their tables or in the lounge areas.  The lighting in the tent was essential to the success of the party; light enough so you could see your food, dark enough that you wanted to dance, and magical enough that you were enchanted.

Overall we threw a great party.  Because our guests had a great time we had an amazing time.  We could not have done it, with the same attention to detail, without our wedding planner Trina of The Planning Company and the willingness of family members to contribute to the day’s festivities.
