Mexico Beach DIY Wedding From Tec Petaja

March 11th. 2010 by Chantale | Filed Under | 41 comments

Let’s hear if for all you “yellow” brides!  I have to say, yellow accented weddings are a particular fave in my books.  They’re sunny, vibrant and cheery.  Just like this Mexico destination wedding photographed by Tec Petaja. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Tec’s photography, you’re in for a treat.  Tec is an artist with a knack for capturing every. little. detail. And Lindsay and Campbell’s wedding is the perfect combination of beachy elegance and DIY cuteness.  But a warning, there is some definite subliminal messaging behind these pictures below.  I came away thinking: Must book a trip to Mexico. Must get a glass of lemonade. The latter is sadly the more realistic and affordable option for me.  Humph. Click here to see TONS more fantastic images.

Our bride, Lindsay tells the tale of how their day came to be:

Campbell is from Australia, I’m from Colorado, and we met and live in New York City. Any destination we picked for our wedding was going to be a trek for a number of our guests, so we decided on neutral territory in Sayulita, Mexico…kind of sort of in the middle!

Our theme was casual beach organic. We loved the idea of a happy, natural style wedding that celebrated our Mexico location in subtle ways, but that wasn’t the dominate theme of the day. We used a Mexican folk art heart Milagro as the “hook” on everything from the invitations to a hand stamped version on our welcome letters, muslin favor bags, and homemade banana bread send off gifts bags.

Lemon yellow was our main color as it expressed the happiness of the occasion as well as the bright and sunny beach location. We achieved an organic feel through Kraft paper printed materials, barnyard wooden frames, muslin favor bags and burlap table runners.

We loved planning our wedding, and spent many weekends together in our 250 square foot New York City apartment working on multiple DIY projects. And through the process, I’ve come to realize that perhaps Campbell, an accountant may be more creative than me, a marketer!

DIY Projects:

  • Table numbers and signage
  • Hand stamped wood guest seating cards
  • Hand stamped muslin favor bags/place card tags
  • Mexican tile magnet favors
  • Homemade banana bread send off gifts (courtesy of the groom’s mother)
  • Personalized canvas welcome totes and welcome letters

The day was perfect, and there is not one thing we would have changed about it. What we loved most was seeing our friends, from all parts of the world, come together during the course of the wedding week to form new friendships. We had a few side romances, and I think there will be some Americans visiting Australia soon!

Thank you Lindsay and congrats!

This wedding looks amazing and just like what I am planning for. I have a few questions about Sayulita. Where did your guests stay while there? Any good recommendations for local hotels that can hold about 80? how about restaurants for a rehearsal dinner?
THANKS and congrats on what looked to be an amazing event.

  22. Lindsay K says:

    Hi Jess,
There aren't really any hotels in Sayulita, with the exception of Villa Amor that has a handful of rooms for rent. Most all of our guests rented villas for the week. Check out sayulitalife.com for places to stay. We had our rehearsal dinner at La Terrazola on the beach. Our planners, Marweddings were the best and I highly recommend them.
    Congratulations!
    Lindsay

I would love to know where you got the milagro descriptions! We are doing the same thing for our escort cards- but can't find a great description- any chance you could let me know??!!! BEAUTIFUL wedding! We are also getting married in Mexico- in Punta Mita- just next door! :)

  25. Lindsay K says:

    Hi Mandy,
We actually wrote the description ourselves. Feel free to use if you like, and congrats on your wedding!
Milagro is Spanish for miracle. It is a symbol of hope; a promise made or fulfilled. The heart milagro represents love, healing & gratitude. May this milagro bring you a healthy heart, passion to your life & the love you have for others.
Thank you for being a part of our miracle.
    Lindsay

  26. Mandy says:

    Thanks Lindsay!!!!

  27. sophie says:

    hi lindsay!

gorgeous wedding!! what did your personalized canvas totes say? i'm trying to think of the perfect phrase for our cabo san lucas wedding in may, but for the life of me i can't find the right words! thanks! :)

  28. Lindsay K says:

    Hi Sophie:
We listed out a bunch of fun and unexpected Spanish phrases like, Dónde está el baño? We wanted to personalize them, but still create something that our guests would actually use during and after the wedding.
    Congrats!
    Lindsay

  29. Thomas says:

    Hi Lindsay!

Love the Mexican tile magnet favor idea! I've been trying to incorporate Mexican tile into the wedding and this is perfect. Where did you get your tiles? Since it was a DIY project, what all did you do you yourself? Thanks!

  30. Lindsay K says:

    Hi Thomas:
We purchased a range of 2x2 Mexican tiles in Sayulita when were down for a planning trip, but you can find them online too, albeit a bit more expensive. We used very strong 1 inch circle magnets and ceramic glue to adhere them to the back of the tiles. Once they were on they sure weren't coming off!
    Good luck!

  31. Elle Sees says:

I never really thought of yellow for a wedding, but this is so lovely. I need a trip to Mexico...and a wedding, STAT! Wanderlust!

  32. catherine says:

    Lindsay,

What kind of cut is your diamond? i have been looking all over for one like it and can't find that flat look anywhere

  33. Lindsay K says:

My ring is an emerald cut.

  34. Nikki B says:

What an amazing event! It's my absolute favorite wedding on SMP... I'm recently engaged and trying to get my arms around cost expectations for a wedding of this caliber. Would you be able to comment on the general costs for the ceremony/reception at Villa Del Oso and even the rehearsal dinner at La Terrazola? Did you have to end the music by a certain time of night? If this is sensitive information, feel free to email me directly at nikkibarrett@gmail.com. Thank you in advance for any guidance you can share!

  35. Jamie Herman says:

Everything but the wedding. Details are great , but where is Mexico in this wedding? Other than the mariachi band, nothing says mexico to me.

  36. Sounds awesome! I just came back from mexico last week and find myself addicted to these incredible http://enchilada-recipes.com/ " rel="nofollow">enchilada recipes now!! Must go back next year sometime, I suppose, and this time head off the beaten track a little. Looking to reading more!

  37. Hey there, long time lurker here with my first ever comment! My only daughter is getting married to her lovely mexican boyfriend soon, and I'm tasked with preparing the wedding party! I thought enchiladas would be a good idea, so trying to find a good http://www.enchiladarecipe.org/typical_enchiladas/ " rel="nofollow">enchilada recipe. What do you think? Any other suggestions?? Anyway, thanks for your hard work as ever...

  38. carly Jarett says:

Can you tell me about those cards with your name and the story on them, were they used as escort cards? we are having our wedding in Mexico so I'm looking for creative ideas. I love the cards with the trinket attached, where did you get those or did you make them? Amazing pics by the way. I love what you wrote on them and may want to borrow that idea. Thanks.
