Dessert Table by Amy Atlas

Until I attended the Martha Stewart 15th Anniversary Party, I had never seen an Amy Atlas table design in person. And when I tell you that it was even better than I thought it would be…I am hardly doing it justice. Amy’s tables are right out of a dream and this one, that she crafted for one of her client’s cocktail parties, is BEYOND.

The photographer that captured the table is none other than Mel Barlow. Mel is one of Darcy Miller’s favorite photographers and a quick glance at Mel’s work will tell you why. I had the opportunity to meet Mel at the Martha event and she was pure loveliness. Just like her photographs.

What do I love about this table aside from EVERYTHING? Well…the color palette for one. It’s so stunning. So vibrant, fresh, fun. Every detail threads back to the perfectly chic color palette with the graphic print on the cake totally stealing the show. Love, love, love.

Amy has been sweet enough to share a bit of her inspiration…

The design was a geometric diamond motif and was largely inspired by a rug pattern. I always say that you can take your inspiration from anywhere! We thought that bold colors like bright pink and yellow would complement the pattern perfectly. We created mini cherry ice cream cupcakes with EDIBLE pink chocolate cupcake wrappers. These completely edible mini cupcakes are ideal for parties since guests can eat the whole cupcake without having to worry about throwing away a wrapper. We also made a diamond-shaped stained-glass cookie garland and a fondant cake with the diamond patter. Add to that, raspberry-lemon panna cotta and cake-filled truffles covered with pink and yellow sprinkles. Voila!

I don’t know how the girl does it but every table that Amy gets her hands on is total perfection. She has a great sense of style…chic and yet restrained. Her work is always edited to perfection so that the table and all of its perfect details can really shine.

DIY Fall Wedding Inspirations

When I said that we have a week of pretty on SMP, I definitely wasn’t doing this feature justice. It’s the prettiest inspiration you’ve ever seen and is sure to give you those butterflies that you get when you know you hit the wedding jackpot. Designed by Jenny Steffens of Occasions by Jenny, this is Fall inspiration with a soft, totally girly approach. And I love every bit of it. And to make it even sweeter, Jenny is sharing a few insanely simple DIY projects that would translate beautifully into any wedding during any season.

From Jenny…

I spent a fun day in my front yard and put together a fantastic inspirational/do-it-yourself table setting – perfect for a flirty Fall wedding. I chose soft, feminine colors (instead of using the typical orange, golds and yellows that are used in Fall weddings) of ivory, pink, blues and natural colors. Little Black Book member Natasha’s Mulberry & Mott made the fabulous Bee Hive Cake for the table.

Gorgeous, right. Well the best part is that the look is actually really easy to achieve. Here are some super simple DIY Projects that Jenny did…

1. Pumpkin Place Cards: To make the sweet and seasonal place cards, I spray painted mini white pumpkins a soft shimmery gold. I snipped the stems and inserted a small name card (printed on textured cardstock) into each pumpkin. A very simple, but special looking project.

2. Rose & Wheat Bouquet: Using creamy garden roses and soft pink tea roses and 10 stems of wheat, I gathered the flowers into a bouquet – taping the stems together with floral tape. Next, I added wheat around the roses, creating a collar. For the wrap, I used a small piece of burlap (that matches the table runner – and is super inexpensive!) and secured it with pearl pins… I love the mixture of rustic and refined elements.

3. Table: I used a variety of linens to achieve a luxurious feel – natural oatmeal linen as the base, a wide brown burlap runner and topped with a classic ticking stripe runner. To bring more seasonal elements to the table, I added Blue Hubbard squash on each side of our “Bee Hive” Cake created by Black Book Member Natasha’s Mulberry & Mott (Kansas City). Each place was set with vintage gold plates, classic hemstitch linen napkins, and, of course, the pumpkin place cards. For added ambiance, I added single rose blooms in bud vases that bring some floral whimsy to the table – without a big investment!

I am totally smitten with this really sweet approach to Fall decor. Who says Fall inspired weddings have to be burnt orange and reds. They can be just as sweet and pretty as any Spring or Summer affair, simply by approaching the design and the color palette differently. It’s SO cool to see a seasonal style in such a different way! Table Number DIY Project

This is not so much a DIY project as a really simple idea…using brown bags filled with fruit as either a table number OR as seating cards. Depending on the size of the bag that you buy, you can use these little treats in different ways. Either approach is just a really adorable way to bring a bit of charm to your table. This DIY is for seating cards, but really…it’s super easy to translate this project in lots of different ways.

Please note, we kept our bags without names on them, as when we created them, we weren’t sure how we wanted to use them. To complete the seating card DIY, you’ll need to write in your guests names above the number. If you want to use the scalloped hole punch, we’ve allowed enough room on the template for you to do that. Otherwise, we used little dotted lines that are super cute and you can simply cut around them for a pretty darned great look.

Materials

Mini Brown Bags (found at Michaels)
Strawberries
Tissue Paper
8.5 x 11″ Card Stock
2.25″ Square Scalloped Hole Punch (found at Michaels)
Color Printer

Instructions

1. Using your color printer, print out this template. Note that we have left room above the numbers for you to write in the names.

2. Using your hole punch, punch out the squares. Or alternatively, using a paper cutter, trim around the dotted lines.

3. With double stick tape, adhere the labels on to your brown bags, right in the center.

4. Using a red or black pen, scribble in the name of your guests above the number. Don’t worry about being too perfect, this project is all about charm.

5. If you don’t want to fill completely with fruit, stuff the bottom half of the bags with red tissue paper, then fill to the brim with strawberries.

These would look especially cute with cherries!

Photography Workshop by Jessica Claire, III

I work with a TON of great photographers. Some have been around a while so their skills and perspectives are really honed, really unique. Others are new and are constantly experimenting with different style and ideas. But I don’t think that I’ve had the chance to see the same wedding or space photographed by so many different artists. It’s amazing to me that each photographer behind Jessica Claire’s Photography Workshop, approached the same details, the same touches…so beautifully different. Simply put, it’s a really cool!

And yet they wouldn’t have had such an incredible event to photograph had it not been for the ridiculous styling that Summer Watkins of Grey Likes Weddings and florist Lauryl Lane put together. It was a simply stunning shoot and although it’s really worked the web, being featured on so many different blogs, I love seeing the unique perspective of each perfect detail. Can’t get enough actually!

The pics above were captured by Natalie Watson…and I love, love, love the light + dark juxtaposition. Gorgeous. And this next set, by Person Killian, is all about the lovely!

From the lovely, Summer Watkins…

Our inspiration for the shoot started with the location, which was very rustic looking with faded grey and brown colors. It really lent itself to a vintage vibe. Also, I felt that bringing in soft color tones would compliment the rough setting. The location really determined our starting off point. From there, I thought that hot air balloons might be a really fun element to incorporate overhead. The initial vision included tons of them, but as you can see, crafting isn’t always as predictable as you’d like! Balloons were popping left and right! However, because we involved Megan of MaeMae Paperie, the hot air balloon theme carried itself throughout the look.

I’m a very thrifty shopper, so in terms of product resources, I always start at my favorite local thrift stores. They often have the very same stuff you might find in an antique store, but for 1/4 the price. All the decanters from our bar, for example, were found in a thrift store. I would stop in at least once a week and always find something new and great. Other resources include stores like HomeGoods, Marshalls, and Ross. Their home sections can surprise you with really great deals. Many of our plates came from these types of places. Etsy was also a great resource. Antique shops and flea markets are always a huge source for me as well, but if you don’t have one near you, again, Etsy is a great alternative. Vintage elements is where you can break the bank, but because we incorporated just a few larger pieces on the table, it made it worth it.

All of our flower vessels came from these sources and of course from things I had laying around the house (like the sooo cute initial mugs from Anthropologie!). Most florists would be happy to put your flowers in vessels you provide. They may even be able to lower the price on your flowers (even if just a tiny bit) because this lowers their cost. The vessels made each arrangement unique and we really loved how it turned out.

The gorgeous antique mantle was from a place called Olde Goode Things in LA. They sell tons of vintage pieces and are extra great because they let you RENT! If you are looking for a statement piece like this for your wedding (I’d love to see someone use an old door) it doesn’t hurt to ask if sellers are willing to consider renting. It’s really a win-win situation.

Creating this look really involves a bit of thrify gumption and a love to shop for deals! But by incorporating finds you’ve found, you are inserting your personality and taste into your wedding. Not only that, but afterward, you get to keep all that cool stuff!

Jessica Claire is great for a couple of reasons. For one, she’s really good at what she does. Two, she’s really generous with her time and her knowledge. And Three, she understands how important the details are in photographing a wedding. Today we are featuring a photography workshop that she held for up and comers and industry pro’s alike, all styled by the INSANELY talented Summer Watkins of Grey Likes Weddings. Every vendor that participated in designing this affair is pure talent…from the gorgeous flowers by Lauryl Lane to the sweet paper touches by MaeMae Paperie and B. Poetic.

You guys might remember the AMAZING photography workshop that Jessica Claire held a few weeks back. Together with some really incredible vendors, like event stylist Summer Watkins and florist Lauryl Lane, Jessica put together one of the most swoon worthy shoots I’ve ever seen. With a sweet, totally detail oriented vintage style, Summer created a backdrop for Jessica and her fellow students that was filled to the brim with perfect touches…perfect for learning and really understanding how to shoot a wedding.

So, we thought you might like to see a little bit more! Summer and Lauryl have gathered up some of their favorite pictures from the photographers that attended the event and is debuting them here today. It’s a truly incredible look at the event through many different lenses, through many different perspectives. I love, love, love that Jessica brought these photographers together and I love even more that Summer designed such a gorgeous canvas for them to shoot!

Winter Wedding Inspirations, II

There is something so special about a Winter styled affair. The coziness, the textures, the muted and yet completely cohesive color palettes. There are so many opportunities to add little touches that are totally and completely elegant and yet totally and completely whimsical. Hot chocolate shots, sweaters for picture frames and candles, cozy throws and mitten favors. There are so many ways to bring personality and style into a Winter wedding and Barb Salzman of Hatch Creative Studio has totally nailed it. Love, love, love everything about this next set of photographs that Karen Mordechai captured…

Barb was sweet enough to share some of the little touches that they infused into the look…

We built carnation snowmen and used an eclectic collection of snow shoes. We had medicine bottles hanging from birch behind the bar filled with snow from ski mtns around the country…fake snow of course but tea stained tags tell the location. We hung signs that said Stowe 1974, Aspen 2001, Snowbird 1984 etc and curtains made from sweater materials. We had a reclaimed fireplace mantle from Recycling the past salvage yard www.recyclingthepast.com and a custom bar made from reclaimed doors made by www.recyclingthepast.com. We used birch covered columns and vases, a cardboard deer hanging above the mantle, picture frames above the mantle with sweater material. There were cocktail and bar tables made from 4″ slices of tree trunks and a Photo Booth designed with snowmen cutouts giving guests the chance to be snowmen!

On the Move Entertainment provided the tunes accompanied by a strolling electric violinist and a bongo player. They were amazing. AVEnts Catering by Ally Lipton provided the yummy treats. Mini hot chocolates in the perfect little mug from (fishs eddy) with berry crumble bites were the hit of the night along with the mini chicken pot pies and butternut squash soup shooters to highlight a few. www.avenyc.com

Winter Wedding Inspirations

If you are having a Winter wedding (and frankly, even if you aren’t) this next feature will make you squeal with wedding glee. It’s actually not a wedding at all. It’s an event that celebrates the space that the amazingly talented Barbara Salzman over at Hatch Creative designed to house Winter events that her clients will be throwing. Her lucky, lucky clients. And although this isn’t exactly a wedding, I thought you guys would die over the perfect Winter details, the cozy little touches, the complete and unabashed romance behind the space.

The forever inspiring Karen Mordechai snapped the stunning photographs of the event that just might be the most gorgeous photographs I’ve ever seen!

Perched high in the Flatiron section of Manhattan is the Nest Event Loft. This awe-inspiring, offspring of Hatch Creative Studio boasts a charmingly modern space with stunning, quintessential views of NYC. This December, Hatch Creative Studio is transforming their event loft into a modern/rustic winter lodge giving clients who rent the space for their holiday parties the wonderful experience of Aspen in NYC. Four years of living in the Rocky Mtns was the inspiration for this unique offering. Hatch Creative Studio showcased their design at Nest Event Loft a few weeks ago and will be resetting the design Dec.1st until the first week in January.

Custom Wedding Cake Stands ~ From Raise The Cake

Style Me Pretty’s Little Black Book members cover ALL the wedding bases … from fashion to photography to destination planners and beyond! Today’s feature wedding on the LBB blog was sent to us by Kathy Jo at Raise The Cake, a custom wedding cake stand design studio.

Your wedding cake can be a huge part of your design element … why not show it off to the utmost! After years of planning and designing weddings, Kathy Jo Peterson saw a need in the wedding industry and set out to solve it! Thus was born “Raise The Cake.”

Amanda and Michael embraced that idea as they set about planning their own August wedding at the Ritz-Carlton in Dana Point, CA!

Their wedding is a terrific example of starting with a central color palette and building on that with elements of depth, texture and just out-’n-out fun. LOVE the adorable peek-a-boo bloomers! Not to mention the paper poms and flower girl wand!

Amanda looks SO graceful and poised … ready for the beginning of their new lives together …

Dessert Table by Amy Atlas

And speaking of dessert tables, the most talented of them all, Amy Atlas, recently sent us a few pics of her latest design…made especially for Mindy Weiss’s Most Ridiculous Wedding Ever. Elizabeth Messina shot the drool inducing images and I have to say, I think that this might be one of Amy’s best!

I had the sheer pleasure of meeting Amy at the Martha Stewart Event last week and get to see one of her little creations in person…and it SERIOUSLY didn’t disappoint! Filled to the brim with probably the most perfect details I’ve ever seen, Amy’s tables are just about as good as it gets. Plus, she is a complete doll and you can just see the creativity stirring in her brain!

The ridiculously talented duo also commissioned Leigh Wells to do the calligraphy on printable tags and labels so that your buffet will have the perfect details that every perfect bride needs! From Inspiration to Reality: The Design, Part III

There were quite a few really amazing vendors that took the time to contribute in HUGE ways to our shoot. For one, the lovely and oh so talented Yumiko of Hana Floral Design did all of the flowers for us, focusing on simple, adorable blooms. She used carnations, which are a super cute and really affordable alternative, that she packed tightly into little, red latte bowls. She also used ranunculus, dahlias and spider mums tucked into little pink juice glasses. The funny thing is, for Yumiko…this was effortless. She has such an incredible eye for style and design that she simply pulled all of these together on site. It was incredible.

Another really important part of the equation was the hair and make-up that Jennie Fresa designed. Here’s what Jennie had to say…the makeup features smooth, matte skin with subtly contoured cheeks. Eyes were kept simple with champagne shimmer on the lids, a touch of black eye liner, and two coats of mascara for long, flirty lashes (and we added a few falsies!). Cherry red lips finish the look with a dab of clear gloss to make for a kissable pout. For hair, we paid homage to the beehive, with volume at the roots and a soft, simple twist in the back. We allowed the hair accessory make the statement.

Next up…the AMAZING team of photographers, Justin and Mary Marantz. I don’t really have to say much about this duo as the images speak for themselves. But, what I do want to tell you is just how graceful they were throughout the day. Pitching in when needed, quietly capturing little pieces of perfection for us to enjoy. I cannot say enough about just how talented they are, just how lovely.

And last but SO far from least, the lovely and ridiculously talented Karen Bartolomei, creative force behind Grapevine Invitations. Karen whipped together the adorable little “Life is Sweet” gift tags for our pies and the ridiculously clever name tag + menu combination that we tied to the back of each chair. Super, super cute. Karen is one of those people that can design perfect details in her sleep…and she actually has a pretty awesome book devoted wholly to this concept! She’s a genius and I’m thrilled to call her a friend.

It was beyond a pleasure to work with all of these talented vendors. And with the beautiful model Lindsey who brought our story to life. We will have lots of fun DIY projects from this photo shoot next week.

From Inspiration to Reality: The Design

If you’re at work, you might want to go ahead and take your coffee break. If you’re at home, grab a cup of joe and cuddle up with your laptop. Today’s feature requires total attention as you are going to find so much inspiration tucked inside each and every image.

It’s time to unveil our absolutely incredible photo shoot, all inspired by Bran Coprata’s ridiculously fun inspiration board. Before I get to the photos, I have to say that we had an insanely talented team of vendors working on this shoot with us. Photographers Justin and Mary Marantz, event designer Sarah True of True Events, florist Yumiko of Hana Floral, fashion guru Beth of The White Dress by the Shore, make-up and hair artist Jennie Fresa and invitation expert Karen of Grapevine Invitations helped us put together a shoot that is filled to the brim with gorgeousness, filled to the brim with so many steal-worthy ideas.

Our shoot was held at the Back Porch Restaurant in Old Saybrook, Connecticut. It’s this great little spot right on the water and served as the perfect backdrop. We wanted to throw a really girly, vintage inspired affair that was affordable and accessible on any budget. For the most part, everything was salvaged or DIY. We used vintage juice glasses for vases that we filled with an effortless collection of garden flowers (more on that later), little ice cream bowls packed tightly with carnations and a collection of mismatched found plates (you can also rent things like this). We used the restaurant’s flatware, homemade pies (baked by your truly), colanders filled with strawberries and old perfume and apothecary jars to accent the table.

The centerpiece of the table was really those AWESOME poms. Aside from being a breeze to put together, they brought that huge pop that we needed. Love, love, love them and will definitely be using these a lot going forward. We accented the table with some ridiculously adorable details…old coke bottles (found at the grocery store), pies that we tied with yarn, and tucked a wooden spoon into, and the most adorable menus/seating cards that Karen at Grapevine did for us that we tied to the back of each chair.

Hollywood Glam Meet Lindsey & John!

Well, before we leave Lindsey & John to their happily ever after, we want to show a few final details that speak volumes to the style of the entire affair!

Fall Wedding Inspired Photoshoot

It’s official. Fall is here and I am loving every minute of it. And this photo shoot, captured by the amazingly talented Carla Ten Eyck is Fall at it’s finest.

The shoot was done at the Tyrone Farm in Connecticut with the always fabulous Candice Dowling of Jubilee Events doing the event styling. Beth Chapman of The White Dress by the Shore did all of the fashions (which are STUNNING by the way). The ridiculously lovely florals were crafted by Jane Rynaski of Just for You Weddings and the hair/make-up was done by Catie Bane of Dana Barton’s Salon.

We really wanted to use anthropologie’s signature vintage / modern look as the inspiration for our shoot. The shoot was also inspired by the rustic location and fall season. Tyrone Farm was an amazing location to use – it’s nestled on a hill in Pomfret, Connecticut and overlooks the tree tops of Massachusetts and Rhode Island. They have an amazing property, complete with a farm house, tented blue stone patio, organic gardens, cottage, and the barn.

The flower girls held these amazing cute little yellow floral wands by Maihar Design. Jane designed these cute headbands with yellow and white flowers, berries and acorns. The ruffled tulle antique stained bolero that Kelley wore with her Manual Motta gown was made by BONZIE, a handmade clothing store with a lot of vintage style. –Candice

In styling the fashion for the shoot, the inspiration was eclectic elegance with a vintage flair. Our concept was to take vintage pieces and show how they can be incorporated into modern wedding day attire. We also pulled in accessories that were new, but had an antique vibe to them to evoke a 1940’s feel. The shoot had the perfect balance between rustic and elegant. We choose gowns with texture to play off of the rustic surroundings, but added a touch of sparkle to bring in a bit of Hollywood glam. –Beth
