So. The reason I love photo shoots like this is simply because of the insane inspiration that can be found within. From the adorable plaid dress, which would look so cute at a laid back rehearsal dinner, to the table settings, the color palette, the textures, the details. The photographers behind the affair wanted to capture that warm, cozy, rustic vibe that sets in right as Fall comes with an outdoor affair that is as homegrown as it is completely elegant.

And although not all photo shoots are scalable for a huge wedding, there are little tokens of gorgeousness that anyone can steal. The lace overlays (which would add texture and charm on top of standard white linens) the flea market style, mismatched glassware. The baby’s breath, the homemade pies, the glamorous wedding gown. You get the drift. Okay, so there was an incredible team of vendors that took part in this shoot. Here’s the run down…

My mom’s a pretty amazing seamstress. She learned to sew in her teens, which means she’s been sewing for more than 40 years. In addition to sewing her own prom dresses, she made our Halloween costumes growing up, from princesses to cheerleaders to space women to ladybugs. Planning my wedding, she was a huge resource. And even though she has lots of sewing experience on her belt, she said that anyone with a sewing machine can make these super simple 14-foot long runners! Plus, you can customize your look and use any type of fabric/thread color combination!

Materials

One bolt of 54-inch wide burlap (you can use less, but 21 runners took the full bolt)
Teal Blue Thread

Directions

1. Cut fabric in lengths of 14 feet, two inches.

2. Cut in half lengthwise so that each strip is 27 inches wide

3. Turn the ends and sides under one inch and hem

4. Stitch with a zig zag stitch (my mom used the largest zig zag, about a quarter of an inch) on her machine and chose satin thread)

5. Iron flat

Sarah chose a board that she called Equestrian Elegance and got to work designing an invitation that captured the spirit and style of the winning board. First up, the design that started it all!

And the GORGEOUS invitation (and I mean so gorgeous that I get all giddy…and start wanting to dream up an equestrian themed wedding) that the board inspired…

After seeing Tonia’s inspiration board, I thought that barn red and white combination were so subtle, like an equestrian inspired invite should be! I didn’t want to be too obviously horse-y!

It’s a booklet invite, which is always a great option for couples who need to add more elements to their invite. So many brides ask me how to neatly place everything in the envelope, which can be a challenge when you have separate reception cards, accommodations, maps… So, a booklet is a nice alternative to loose cards if that is important to a bride. One trick for money-saving is use the folder cover of the booklet as a program cover too. That way the bride isn’t paying for two separate covers if she’s planning on printing programs down the road. We just print double the amount needed, which is so much more cost effective than printing twice!

I also fell for her knitted items, and worked really hard to get the yarn element in the invite, without being too crafty ( I tried knitted, crocheted, then the simple wrap with a bit of a braid seemed to make the most sense, without taking the focus off the invite. I love a monogram, too, so I liked showing a simple type treatment here (again, subtle) within the wreath to tie it all together.

I mean are in you love yet? This is so unbelievably lovely and I seriously hope that it inspires a simple, tailored equestrian wedding design so that we can show it off on SMP! Thank you so much to the fabulously talented Sarah Drake for taking on the From Inspiration to Invitation Challenge. I would call it a ridiculously huge success!

It was the place where Driving Miss Daisy and Fried Green Tomatoes were both shot so you know it was heavy on the gorgeousness. The cute, cute bride is wearing a vintage dress from Stephans and Clothing Warehouse and shoes from J. Crew. Now the MOST cost effective approach to tuxes is through rentals. Men’s Wearhouse has a good selection, great prices and generally a helpful staff. There are a ton of other well known brands that cater to wedding attire but they all vary regionally in terms of quality. It’s best to get a personal recommendation from a friend or family member. If you can get the name of someone to help you within the store, even better. The problem with rental companies is that sometimes the quality is a bit off and more annoyingly, you have to return them pretty quickly which isn’t always possible when you’re throwing a destination wedding. But in terms of bang for your buck, this is definitely the way to go.

If you are thinking about purchasing a tux for your groom…here are a few favs!

First Row: The first, by Men’s Wearhouse is a total classic. Designed by Calvin Klein this tux is a total classic, bow tie an all. The price is $519.99 Next up, a gorgeous tux that we found for $495 at Nordstrom. Love the easy going style and the quality construction. And lastly, another Men’s Wearhouse find. It’s a single button tux, non-vented, 100% wool. It’s sexy, classic and yet the long tie makes it a bit more contemporary…all for $319.99

Second Row: Our next row is a little bit pricier but still not totally extravagant. All found at Nordstrom, these strike the perfect balance between cost and quality. Ideal for the groom who wants something that will last him a while while maintaining its timeless look and feel.

Third Row: These are all priced between $1,000-$2,000. And here’s what you get for a more expensive suit…quality. A tux that your hubby can wear over and over and over. Fit. Buying a high priced suit usually comes with a lovely tailor on site to make sure that it’s total perfection. Timelessness. These styles simply won’t go in and out of fashion. Tuxes by Brooks Brothers, Neiman Marcus and Brooks Brothers.

OK. So that’s a bare bones look at tuxedos. And I’m an old fashioned girl, so a classic tux is SO up my ally. But for all of you girls that need a little “something-something” to jazz up the look…it’s all in the details. Great cuff links, a fun bow tie, cool shoes, graphic pocket squares.

Although some might think that messing with the classic tux is a big fashion don’t…I’m not in that camp. I’m of the thought that you should make your look work for YOU. It should reflect your own unique personality, your own unique style. And there is nothing wrong with a great pair of converse sneaks underneath a classic tux. It’s the perfect marriage of style and substance.

So there you have it ladies. TONS of great options for dressing your boys. Whatever approach you decide, remember that just like in choosing your wedding gown and bridesmaids dresses, your groomsmen attire should fit cohesively within the look and style of your wedding. Always start with your venue and let the space dictate your fashion picks.

First up, a classic suit.

The classic suit just might be the most lovely, most stress free way to dress your fiance. You can’t go wrong with something that is as timeless as a black, gray or navy suit. Pair it with some nice shoes and a pretty tie and there is no doubt he’ll look gorgeous.

Row 1: This suit, by Tommy Hilfiger at Macy’s is simple and tailored. Pair it with a gorgeous silver and black striped tie, also found at Macy’s and a pair of loafers from Zappos and you have a really gorgeous style. The total for all three pieces is $375.99 and all you have left is a white shirt and a pair of black socks!

Row 2: There is just something about a man in a gray suit that screams sophistication to me. This one, by Kenneth Cole that we found on Overstock (which actually has an awesome collection of namebrand suits at ridiculously low prices) is all gorgeousness. We paired it with a classic tie by Macy’s and shoes by Steve Madden that we found on Zappos. The total look is $309.93.

Row 3: Navy equals handsome in my opinion. My husband wears a navy suit more than his black one because there is just something so yummy about the look. Particularly for a wedding. This one, by Calvin Klein at Macy’s, is perfection and paired with a tie we found at Macy’s and shoes that we discovered at Payless (yup, payless people) is the definition of hotness. The total for all three pieces is $417.19. A little pricier than the first two options but a steal nonetheless.

Next up, some options for the more the casual groom. There is something really great about a casual groom…the confidence, the effortlessness, the personality tucked into the details. Here are some super budget finds for the more laid back groom.

Row 1: The first look is PERFECT for the beach, the lake, anywhere that laidback chic is a must. A basic pair of khaki pants from Old Navy, a white button down from the Gap and leather flip flops by American Eagle…all super simple, all super hot. You can dress this look up a touch by having the boys tuck in their shirts and put on a great belt. Total cost for this look is $108.50

Row 2: This camel suit from J. Crew is total perfection. It’s casual while still being really special, really fashion forward. Pair it with some Steve Madden Mocs from Macy’s and a simple, old school tie and you have a look that is a little bit vintage, a little bit school teacher. Totally and completely handsome. Total is $356.50

Row 3: Here’s a tip for you ladies. If you are looking for a suit that is off the beaten path…searsucker, madras, linen…check out Haspel. They have been making suits for decades and they have it down to a science. They aren’t the most luxurious suits you’ve ever seen, but they have fun fabrics and really fun prices. This one, a white linen suit is perfect for a day wedding, a garden affair, a beachside celebration. With shoes by Kenneth Cole and a subtle, striped shirt by J. Crew, the look is totally delicious. You can even pair it with some flip flops for a casual affair. The entire looks costs 258.49.

Sometimes those boys can use an extra hand when trying to pick out looks for the wedding weekend. That’s where we come in. Today, we have put together some looks to make sure those men don’t fall victim to a fashion faux pas on your special weekend. This next collection is all about some day-after the wedding fashion, perfect for an elegant brunch or a casual gathering.

Row I: It’s a daring look for some, but most guys look great in a well-fitted vest like this one by Theory. A more relaxed occasion calls for a more relaxed watch. This timepiece by Triumph has a beautifully chic crocodile band and equally striking slate toned face. What better way to show up in style to a fancy brunch than wearing an eye-catching tie? Burberry’s are my choice for those waiting to make a statement.

Row II: Go beyond a basic button down, and go for something a little edgy. I like this shirt by Robert Graham, which sneaks in exciting patterns along the cuffs. Bill Adler makes very cool belts for those with a bit more of an eclectic style. Pair this belt with jeans and a crisp slate gray shirt to achieve style perfection. In a great pattern and a great shade of brown, it’s no wonder this pant by Banana Republic is a customer favorite. Wear them with a bold shirt, or a classic polo and your groom will be brunch ready.

Row III: I am loving the mod look of these pants I found at Bonobos. The subtle plaid pattern is perfect for a casual or elegant brunch. Complete the revived vintage look with a classic straw fedora, like this one from the Village Hat Shop. If you go in this fashion direction, just remember to kindly remove your hat once socializing with your guests. An ingenious shirt goes a long way in the fashion world and in my mind, this one by Scotch and Soda takes the cake by blending a classic shirt with updated elements, like these super cool elbow patches.

Row I: I know, a tux is a no brainier as an option for wedding day attire, but instead of renting one, have your groom-to-be consider investing in one of his own. Jos. A. Bank has great suit and tux specials and will make sure his choice is perfectly tailored and impossibly handsome on the big day. Regardless of if you man rents his tux or purchases one of his own, a pair of really nice cuff links is a great fashion accessory. This pair by John Hardy is for sure a splurge, but totally worth investing in for the ultimate in special occasions. Another great accessory is a well-crafted tie. For a sophisticated alternative to the traditional bow-tie, this silk tie by David Donahue is a good-looking option.

Row II: Let’s face it, it’s much harder for a man to find clothes that are a perfect fit. Shirts My Way has this problem solved by allowing the customer to design and custom order their special shirt—ensuring a perfectly tailored fit right out of the box. Guys that are looking for a updated traditional look, should definitely go the suit route. I love this suit by J. Crew, that has a classic silhouette, but a bit more refined for the modern man. Ok, this watch by TX is beyond hip, but for those not wanting to splurge on the pricey timepiece, use this for inspiration. A classic chronograph watch in sleek stainless steel will not only make your hubby-to-be feel like James Bond, but look like him too.

Row III: Adding a unique pocket square to a classic suit or blazer is a great way to turn up the fashion volume. I love this playful print and fresh hue in this pocket square by Paul Smith. A light colored, relaxed fit pant is a great option for beach side weddings. A pair of chinos has a flat front, like these from Canterbury of New Zealand, which is a flattering option. Up the ante on the casual groom’s look with a bold bow tie! Ben Silver has several unique and traditional bow ties by the dozens in a variety of hues.

THESE lovely ladies celebrated Linnea & Dave’s wedding this past August in Maine. SO PRETTY!

Francie at Tangorra Wedding Planning is sharing a bit of their story with us … and Alexandra Daley-Clark is responsible for all of the awesome images …

These two were so fun to work with, they had such great style and we were able to really showcase their personalities in their wedding weekend, which we love! They both LOVE food and wine – Dave owns a wine consulting company, and has worked in some of New York’s best foodie destinations, so we obviously had to incorporate that everywhere! The weekend started off with a super fun boat tour aboard the “Island Romance” and a welcome lobster bake for all of their guests on Peak’s Island, a tiny little island right off the coast of Portland.

On the wedding day, which was a truly beautiful day – the kind that only exists in Maine – Dave prepped with a professional shave, while the girls primped in a cute little salon in the Old Port. The ceremony and reception were held on the grounds of the Southern Maine Community College, on a spot where Linnea’s Grandfather’s house used to stand (before the college was built), overlooking the beach where her mother grew up taking swimming lessons!

After the ceremony, they had an amazing 5 course tasting meal that revolved around Maine’s finest offerings – mini lobster rolls, seared duck with blueberry sauce, mint ravioli – yum! And of course, every dish was paired with a fabulous glass of wine. The attention to detail didn’t end with the meal, though. This wedding was gorgeous. From their ceremony (which included a wine ceremony!) overlooking the Spring Point lighthouse to the reception in a glowing Sperry tent right on the coast, everything was the perfect blend of New York chic and rustic Maine goodness.

And as promised earlier, the details from the lovely bride, Linnea …

Dave and I worked with Francie to create a relaxed, intimate celebration that felt very ‘us’. We really wanted our guests to experience the natural beauty of the Maine coast, so we chose a gorgeous ocean-side site at Southern Maine Community College in South Portland. My mother grew up in Maine and my grandfather’s childhood home (until it was turned into a WWII shipyard!) was literally steps away from our site, so there was lots of family significance on my side!

During our ceremony, guests had views of sailboats, scenic Casco Bay islands, abandoned Civil War forts, wildflowers, and not one but TWO lighthouses! We really wanted the focus to be on the natural coastal beauty, so we limited our ceremony decor to galvanized pails of hydrangea lining the aisle.

I took tons of photos when we initially chose our location, which really helped us choose attire for our wedding party later on – I literally cut and pasted photos of dresses onto a background showing where our ceremony would be held! That’s partly why I knew I would love the white dresses we chose for my bridesmaids – they really seemed to pop against the deep blue ocean and bright green grass! I had nine bridesmaids (with a 20-year age span), so I really liked the idea of having the girls coordinate without matching exactly. Thread’s white seersucker dresses were perfect for this – each of the girls chose her favorite style, but the resulting combination still looked very pulled together. The groomsmen’s blue and white seersucker suits were from Jos A. Bank.

Dave and I really wanted to play up the ‘dinner party’ aspect of our reception. We’re both food and wine people – in fact we met while working in the wine industry. We opted for a tasting-style menu – four mini-courses – that allowed us to pair wines with each course. We chose to emphasize fresh, local ingredients – the idea was to create a menu that would be similar to the style of food we would cook for a dinner party at home. Our caterer, Black Tie, was even able to create a version of ‘Mint Love Letters’ (a favorite dish at Babbo, where Dave previously worked as a sommelier) as one of the courses!

We decided to save the dancing portion of the evening until after dinner, and instead created a playlist of ’songs about love’ (think more Magnetic Fields than Barry Manilow) to be played during the meal. Every bride says that her wedding flies by – but I actually think that saving the dancing for last somehow made the reception feel longer! I would describe the overall look of our reception as ‘French-country, with a modern twist’. The combination of the long, banquet-style, wooden tables and the clear Victoria Ghost chairs really formed the backbone of our vision. They created such a strong ‘look’ that we really didn’t have to add too many other decor components – and we were able to fit them into our budget by eliminating costly linens, chair cushions, and so on. I love the Ghost chairs – I splurged on a few to brighten up my otherwise Ikea-furnished flat in London during business school, and Dave and I have since moved them to New York. I really wanted to use them for our wedding, and was thrilled when Francie was able to source them for us! It was really helpful to have a strong central visual in order to explain the look we were going for during discussions with potential vendors. It was really obvious when someone “got it” – our florist, Laurie (of Minott’s Flowers in Portland), did an amazing job of creating a fresh, natural look. She even managed to incorporate our love of food and wine by planting old champagne cases with fresh herbs. They were absolutely beautiful, and a huge hit!

The photographer that captured the table is none other than Mel Barlow. Mel is one of Darcy Miller’s favorite photographers and a quick glance at Mel’s work will tell you why. I had the opportunity to meet Mel at the Martha event and she was pure loveliness. Just like her photographs.

What do I love about this table aside from EVERYTHING? Well…the color palette for one. It’s so stunning. So vibrant, fresh, fun. Every detail threads back to the perfectly chic color palette with the graphic print on the cake totally stealing the show. Love, love, love.

Amy has been sweet enough to share a bit of her inspiration…

The design was a geometric diamond motif and was largely inspired by a rug pattern. I always say that you can take your inspiration from anywhere! We thought that bold colors like bright pink and yellow would complement the pattern perfectly. We created mini cherry ice cream cupcakes with EDIBLE pink chocolate cupcake wrappers.   These completely edible mini cupcakes are ideal for parties since guests can eat the whole cupcake without having to worry about throwing away a wrapper. We also made a diamond-shaped stained-glass cookie garland and a fondant cake with the diamond patter. Add to that, raspberry-lemon panna cotta and cake-filled truffles covered with pink and yellow sprinkles. Voila!

I don’t know how the girl does it but every table that Amy gets her hands on is total perfection. She has a great sense of style…chic and yet restrained. Her work is always edited to perfection so that the table and all of its perfect details can really shine.

Gita and Aron, the gorgeous Bride and Groom behind today’s affair, are the filmmakers of the acclaimed and award winning documentary How We Get By. The film follows three Main senior citizens and their tireless efforts to greet American troops returning from overseas conflict. With homemade signs in hand, the trio has greeted nearly 1 million troops from their tiny airport in Maine, demonstrating just how deep the word “community” goes at a time when America needs it most.

The insanely talented Main Vendors that we know and love got together to gift this talented couple a pro bono wedding, to give back to the pair that is reminding us of just how important our Veterans are, just how good it feels to give back to total strangers. And today, we are taking you through every part of their amazing wedding story…from the rehearsal dinner through the farewell brunch. It’s a great, great day on SMP.
