From the gorgeous bride…

True New Yorkers at heart, Jonathan and I still grew up in small towns, which means for us that family and tradition are highly prevalent in our lives. He’s a Yankee from upstate New York and I’m a Southern Belle from the Deep South. Our lives crossed paths one day at Starbucks and since then we’ve been inseparable. Being Southern is a huge part of who I am and also played a huge role in what made Jonathan fall in love with me, so I wanted to make sure this heritage was spread throughout the Wedding. From the cuisine all the way down to the boutonnières we made sure this theme was in the details. The ceremony and reception were held in the Huntsville Roundhouse, which is an old converted train depot. The building was perfectly Southern and vintage all in one.

One of the very most important details of the day was my dress, as it is with most Brides, however being a Fashion Designer and co-owner of my own line it was of the utmost importance. I’ve always loved to place my own spin on tradition and so a white wedding dress just wouldn’t do. I choose to go with mine and my Grandmother’s favorite color of dark purple. My business partner and I then added all our touches using silk taffeta and organza as the main fabrics, and the lining was a pale pink to match the lining we use in all our clothing. The buttons were vintage antique and all the zippers used inside the dress were blue to symbolize the something blue.

I wanted more than just my dress to be special and felt that my Bridesmaids and dearest friends should have the same. Kiley, my maid of honor, was head designer of evening wear at Kay Unger and went to work designing some of the most beautiful Bridesmaid dresses I’ve ever scene. The girls held wooden fans with bows attached to match the Wedding dress, which was a true Southern detail.

We couldn’t leave the men out of being “dressed for the occasion” and so my company had ties made in the same fabric as the Bridesmaid dresses, which was also a gift to the groomsmen. Stacey, the groomswoman, wore a Sara Claire & Esther (my company) dress created specially for her to match the tuxes. The boutonnières and corsages were made by hand using feathers my Father, a hunter, had saved for me.

During the ceremony friends and family enjoyed looking through the vintage books that were recreated into the programs by using a book cover and pages I designed and pasted inside. Near the end of the ceremony one of my close friends stood up to recite a poem for the special moment that she’d written just for us. Very few flowers were used, but hydrangea and willow branches were incorporated into the alter where we stood.

The food itself was all Southern fair with the Grits station being the most important, especially for all the Yankees whom were visiting. The Wedding cake was made from my Great Grandmother’s special Charlotte cake recipe and topped with blackberries and homemade whipped cream. The groom’s cake was 3 tiers of glazed a doughnuts – a true favorite of his. A special addition to the food was the coffee lounge that was a surprise created by our Wedding Planners. Since we’d met at Starbucks this was one of the evening’s highlights. The lounge included homemade biscotti, coffee, and mint julep sweet tea.

From the adorable bride, Erica…

I collected jars, vases, pitchers, etc. for over a year to use for our centerpieces. I borrowed some and found the rest at thrift stores, garage sales and flea markets around the Sacramento area. The main vase on our sweetheart table belonged to Tory’s grandmother.

Auhh, cute AND creative… now you can add sweet to the list of things that I can’t resist about this wedding.

Not only is the bride a big fan of SMP, but Erica has a fabulous blog of her own called Barnyard Chic, where she has documented her wedding planning adventure (complete with lots of diy projects, talented vendors, and behind the scenes info). I am forever amazed by brides who are not only clever and talented but who also take the time to create gorgeous details themselves… case and point these rustic place cards boards. Erica wasn’t able to hang her escort cards as planned, so she crafted these fabric frames as an alternative way to display the place cards. Another great opportunity to incorporate bold patterns and personality into the day.

We wanted to have an eclectic vintage outdoor wedding. When we visited Newcastle Wedding Gardens for the first time, I just knew it was the perfect place for our wedding; the setting is one of incredible natural beauty mixed with old world charm. And I just loved the idea of having our reception in a BARN! Tory and I decided to do photos before the ceremony, and I’m so glad we did. It was really special to have that first moment between just the two of us.

My bouquet was adorned with a brooch that was my great grandmother’s. We had a basket of vintage hankies that I had collected from eBay near the guestbook; an attached sign invited guests to take one for their happy tears.

Here are a few last bits of eye candy for all of you. From Angel Swanson…

Guests collected their seating arrangements on the most fabulous escort card display, created using a salvaged door, some metal hooks, vintage keys and tea-stained tags. Each guest’s name was written on the door in metallic gold ink, and stationer Kari Dyas installed hooks next to each name. On the hook, a guest would find an aged skeleton key attached to a tea-stained tag simply noting their table assignment. The door was propped up against an old piano for the perfect makeshift stand.

The dining space itself was an area mowed out (in the shape of a keyhole, no less!!) in a meadow of tall grass. The site owners at 3 Stones graciously went along with our request to let the rest of the meadow run wild with the growth of the tall grass so it was like an outdoor “room” surrounded by walls of wispy stalks of grass. Incredible. Guests entered the area by crossing the threshold of an old door (still attached to its frame!), completely bedecked with magnolia leaves and florals by Gilly and his team. An old coat rack proffered various shawls and scarves, as well as vintage hats, to “rent” for the evening. A vintage suitcase sat at the rack’s base to collect the accessories at night’s end.

Guest seating was at a mix of long and square rough-hewn wooden tables, topped with custom-made burlap runners edged in lengths of wide velvet ribbon. We brought in a playful selection of mismatched china for the placesettings, where guests discovered personalized menus that had been aged with tea, letterpressed and designed with burned edges and a wine glass stain. It was yet another genius element brought to life by stationer and artist Kari Dyas.

Lush tablescapes brimming with whimsical details graced each table. An astounding collection of vintage tins, copper vessels and apothecary glass were was pieced together for months and Gilly Flowers filled each one with wild, organic-feeling arrangements using uncommon blooms, branches and foliage. Jeweled bug brooches were gingerly poised amongst the florals as another layer of delightful design. There was a fabulous detail everywhere you turned!

The decadent dinner menu featured butternut squash soup, roasted halibut, and lamb chops with a pomegranate orange reduction. A masterful cake created by Napa’s own renowned bakery, Perfect Endings, was an ideal dessert paired with fresh milk shooters and an assortment of freshly baked cookies. The cake’s fondant design was inspired by the wedding china, Jeff’s shoes, and the ubiquitous skeleton keys. Jessica’s favorite singer, Kyler England, entertained guests with two live music sets and DJ Mark of Denon & Doyle kept the dance floor packed until the couple’s formal grand exit at the end of the night.

It was a perfect day from start to finish and guests were truly immersed in an extraordinarily styled environment that oozed inspiration. Not a single thing was left undesigned. Watching Jess and Jeff sway back and forth during their first dance (performed by Jeff’s brother, photographer Michael Norwood!), lovingly gazing at one another, is a poignant memory. It was a joy to be a part of and I will never forget the way I felt as the sun set and we dined under the stars.

Although we have LOTS more on the way, if you simply can’t wait…head on over to Jessica’s blog for her very own behind the scenes look at a day that will go down in wedding history. And Jose Villa is also doing a big spread on the wedding that is sure to leave you in complete and total awe.

Jessica hand-picked the genius that is Jose Villa to shoot her day and I have to say, this just might be one of Jose’s best pieces of work to date. His photographs are flawless…simple and yet filled to the brim with emotion. Elegant and yet still completely vibrant. They are the kind of photographs that will inpire and inspire and inspire.

The event design was done by two ridiculously talented pros…the lovely Angel Swanson of Love & Splendor, along with Kabrel Polak. And Angel, who also has an incredible feature of this wedding on her own blog, has been so kind as to give us a real, behind the scenes look at the day.

Cocktail hour took place under an immense tree with a canopy that almost formed a natural tent. Golden chandeliers were nestled among the branches for soft light. Guests noshed on delicious gourmet bites, courtesy of Alex’s Catering, but the highlight of the cocktail hour was a Dwelly Farms Heirloom Tomato Exhibition Bar. A staff chef was there to slice fresh heirloom tomatoes and dress them with the guest’s choice of oils, balsamic vinegars, artisan sea salts and cheeses, as well as freshly-snipped herbs! They even put out brioche rolls and crispy pancetta for those who wanted to make a mini-BLT!

It was a fabulous display. Seating was dispersed among more mini vignettes with fabulous tufted armchairs and low wooden coffee tables, as well as linen-covered cocktail tables with bar stools. Vintage timepieces swayed in the breeze, suspended from tree branches with lengths of oatmeal-textured twill tape. A collection of vintage cameras and family portraits, along with unexpected groupings of unique blooms and foliage, adorned tabletops in this area.

From the hugely talented Angel Swanson of Love and Splendor, one of the event designers behind the day…

Guests arrived to 3 Stones through a covered trellis leading into a welcoming courtyard. A refreshing beverage station greeted guests with southern sweet tea, French pomegranate juice and sparkling berry lemonades, served with twisty straws and fresh fruit garnish. An old library filing cabinet (an incredible find we discovered at a salvage yard!) was dressed with tufts of moss and floral accents, as well as fresh fruit for ‘picking’ as a pre-ceremony treat. When the ceremony was about to begin, guests were ushered as a group to the site. Along the winding path to the ceremony, guests encountered such conversation pieces as a 6’ wrought iron bird cage (another salvage yard treasure!) filled with florals resembling a majestic bird and its plumage.

The ceremony was held in a beautiful clearing overlooking a lake and the rolling vineyards at 3 Stones. Florist Neil Gilly of Gilly Flowers created an incredible “outdoor chapel” by defining the space using a series of vintage windows, embellished with lush sprays of branches, leaves and florals in autumnal shades. Scraps of an old wooden fence lined the back of the ceremony space, and antique locks were strung on lengths of velvet ribbon along various posts for a whimsical touch. A series of Persian rugs lined the aisle leading up to another dramatic window display.

For guest seating, we used mis-matched wooden chairs (half of which came from an abandoned 1940’s schoolhouse) dressed with turquoise dupioni sashes and vintage brooches, mixed in with mini vignettes of vintage furniture. Stacks of vintage luggage and antique trunks, overflowing with florals, were also featured throughout the seating area. Many of these pieces came directly from the personal collection of Jessica’s cousin, event stylist Kabrel Polak. The bridesmaids wore a unique mix of dresses in various textures and colors that complemented the look of the day, while the men wore ensembles that included suspenders and vests that were a nod to a bygone era.

Jose Villa, who you know I have fallen madly in love with over the years, is giving us the honor of debuting the hugely talented Jessica Claire’s wedding that he recently had the pleasure of shooting. Knowing how incredibly creative and completely talented Jessica Claire is, I not only fell out of my chair…I quickly jumped up and squealed with ridiculous amounts of glee. I am pretty sure the neighbors heard my happiness.

For those of you that are photography junkies like myself, Jessica Claire is basically the cat’s meow. Her work, her style, her business is beloved in the world of photography and we’re simply beside ourselves that we get to be the ones to unravel her positively gorgeous wedding. And it’s not just any old wedding. It’s hands down one of the most beautiful weddings I’ve ever seen, bursting at the seems with details straight out of a glossy and yet still has a sense of intimacy that will literally make you cry. Yep. It’s that good…maybe even better.

The lovely, lovely, lovely Angel Swanson of Love & Splendor was the planner and co-designer, with Event Designer and Stylist, Kabrel Polak, behind the day. And she’s been sweet enough to stop by and share some of the incredible, behind the scenes details with us…

When Jessica came to me early this year for help planning her fall wedding to Jeff, I was thrilled. Jessica is a wonderful friend as well as a peer in the industry, so I was delighted to come on board in putting together an incredible event. Jessica sees weddings day in and day out, and has photographed some of the most amazing weddings to date. For this reason we knew that her wedding day had to be extremely unique and special, and a true reflection of her personal style and sensibilities. She and fiancé Jeff sent me an inspiration board that was at once dramatic and whimsical, charming and rustic.Jessica wanted rich, saturated colors, vintage-inspired details and a true feast for the eyes with over the top details, luscious florals and one-of-a-kind décor.

Once the awe-inspiring Napa Valley venue, 3 Stones, was locked in, the design just poured out. It was like a flood of inspiration that kept running down until the day itself! Recurring design elements and motifs included locks and keys, branches, velvet and burlap, vintage timepieces and cameras, jeweled bugs and tea-stained stationery. Every single piece of furniture and décor had a sense of history to it – there was the feeling that each treasured item had been carefully picked out of an amazing vintage estate. The final result was absolutely breathtaking and actually left me with goosebumps. Our incredible vendor team pulled together an intensely styled event and the wedding is instantly one of my all-time favorites!

from Lindsey …

One of the best parts of the wedding was seeing John for the first time prior to the ceremony. It was just the two of us and Kristin; it was intimate, heartfelt and unexplainable. At first we were extremely hesitant on doing a ‘first look’ session … John is very traditional and wanted to know what that feeling was like to see each other for the first time when I walked down the aisle. However, it was important to us to also capture those first time feelings with just the two of us, creating a memory between only us and the camera. It was truly the most amazing feeling I have ever felt … sitting next to him, both of us not being able to see one another, but being able to feel the connection and breath between us … and then unveiling at the same time … awww, what a tearful moment. For me, nothing could ever top that! It was perfect!

Remember the little ring bearer and flower girl from one of our previous posts? Kristin’s very own little lovelies!

And after months and months of planning … the big moment … as Lindsey and John say, “We Do!”

Then on to the celebration!

Tiffany Ratliff and the rest of the terrific team at Weddings And The City spent hours and hours planning, creating and transforming this space into all that Lindsey had dreamed it could be!

Along with the expertise and creativity of Weddings and the City, we were able to put a vintage feel on a modern space. The layout had a last minute switch from outside on the fourth floor terrace of the Mint Museum of Craft & Design to an indoor/outdoor tent event of grand proportion. Lining the walls were 12 fabric panels measuring 16ft by 8ft that brought a soft feel and lightened the space with a fresh fall glow. 36″ balloons were used to add depth and accent the room and tall ceilings. Feather boas and candld votive brought a subtle and warm lighting to the event. Everything was beyond what we ever imagined … simply elegant, simply perfect, simply unforgettable! It was our dream.

And so as all good things must come to an end … our final shot from Lindsey and John’s wedding … they’ve come full circle from their  milk & cookies inspired e*shoot to milk & cookies at their wedding celebration!

Last thought from the bride…

My reception dress was a vintage piece from the 1950’s. I purchased that at a small vintage boutique in Bridgehampton, NY. I truly wanted a party dress for the reception, I didn’t want to ruin my gown, because I truly hope that some day my daughter will wear it.

OK, moving on. Sometimes I know that you guys will love a wedding that we feature. Sometimes, I know that I love a wedding that we feature. Today, I know that everyone will love the wedding that we are featuring. It’s just that kind of wedding…the kind that can easily capture a girl’s heart with vintage touches and perfectly thoughtful details. It was traditional and yet hugely personal. Photographed by the team at Carla Ten Eyck, it was simply lovely.

From the bride…

My Mom hand made all of our table runners, the pillows that decorated a window seat, and she also hand made ricotta cookies as favors, with a handwritten note inside the boxes. Needless to say she was busy! One of the pillows was my old baby pillow, which my mom surprised me with a couple of days before the wedding. Thanks Mom.

Myself and my Maid of Honor also hand made all of the escort cards. We dipped over 200 tags into tea, to give them that perfect vintage look. We then bought a cool vintage looking rubber stamp, stamped each tag, and then hand wrote everyone’s name. They were decorated with beautiful bows up at the top. I also hand made all of our table numbers. We took old large mason jars, tea stained small doilies, then wrote a table number on the doily, and lastly took a chandelier crystal to give it that extra bit of vintage glam. It was alot of work, but it was worth it!

Sweet tea and lemonade….we are huge fans of sweet tea and couldn’t imagine a party without it. So, we actually got one of our favorite restaurants to make it for us for our wedding. And we of course couldn’t just have regular glasses, we had it Mason jars, again to keep in with the whole vintage theme.

From the lovely bride…

My ceremony dress was purchased at the Bridal Garden in NYC, which is a not for profit bridal boutique that showcases major designers and retails their dresses for 75% off the retail price. The money that goes towards purchasing the dress helps support education for NYC children. I was truly blessed and fortunate for finding a beautiful gown that fit like a glove! The gown was made by Pronovias. My veil was designed by me and my maid of honor at an amazing place in NYC called Sposabella. That was also a wonderful experience, I got to pick out my own lace! It was a dream come true.

My something Blue was given to me by my Maid of Honor, it was a piece of ribbon that had our wedding date as well as my old initials (WAB) stitched on. My mom sewed that piece of fabric into my dress the morning of our special day. She was honored to do it….tears and all!
