From Krista of KJ & Co.As a wedding photographer herself, the bride, Heather, sees gorgeous weddings all the time. Of course she had some fabulous inspiration when it was her turn. Heather and Scott fell in love with the Gambrel Barn at the venue and the property surrounding it. They hoped to use the barn loft for their ceremony. Over the next few months Heather collected items that fit her rustic-elegant theme. It was a labor of love as she acquired books, silver tea service pieces, brass candle sticks, milk glass vases and jars. She imagined a dramatic long head table in the middle of the room and clustered flower arrangements on the guest tables. Marissa of Foxglove & Yarrow absolutely brought this vision to life. The florals were spot-on. It wasn’t until about seven weeks before the wedding that KJ & Co. came on board. I met with Heather and we discussed the theme she had in mind and how we could continue it, along with elements she had already selected like the flowers and the invitations, also by Foxglove & Yarrow. The look was rustic to suit the barn, but more casually-chic than country, nothing too fussy. Colors were soft and light — all-white linens and muted tones of peach, pale pink and white for the florals.

The day of the wedding started out with terrible gray clouds and pouring rain. Since the ceremony and reception were indoors, thankfully, the rain had no effect on our plans, but as the wedding planner, I was still devastated. I was so disappointed for Heather and Scott not to be able to take their wedding photos outside. They were so excited about the grounds at the park and all the neat buildings. As we unloaded in the rain at the venue, I continued to worry about the weather and all the guests making the walk from the parking lot in a downpour. Amazingly, the weather cleared up shortly before Scott and his groomsmen arrived. It turned out to be an wonderfully clear afternoon and evening. I was both relieved and pleased. As you can see, they got their gorgeous outdoor photos after all. The bride walked down the aisle to her cousin playing his acoustic guitar accompanied by her sister singing. After the ceremony, guests enjoyed martinis, hors d’oeuvres and lawn games, as well as horse and carriage rides around the property.

I loved some of the more non-traditional elements that Heather had chosen, such as the pie and sweets table instead of wedding cake. We brought this idea to life with a “love is sweet” banner, old window frames for a back drop and lots of levels for display with KJ & Co. cake stands and jars. Guests really enjoyed the chewy cookies, tarts and pie later in the evening. In addition, there was a popcorn machine and barbequed sausages and hot dogs as a late night snack. Also the mini jam jar favours that Heather custom ordered for the guests fit right in on the table. As the evening went on, we opened the large barn doors so guests could see the stars as they danced and enjoy the amazing September weather. Thanks again to Mother Nature for cooperating! Guests further enjoyed a photo booth with Heather’s props and our antique world map as the backdrop. It was an amazing, beautiful day for a gorgeous couple. I can’t thank them enough for letting me be a part of it, or all of the other vendors for their hard work.

From the Bride… Brian proposed in February 2012, and we were married June 15, 2012. My mom helped us set the date, which seemed a bit soon, but she was in the late stages of stomach cancer. Sadly, she passed away in late April and our wedding plans were up in the air. We finally decided to be married on the chosen date, but we scaled it back to a very private and simple civil ceremony, followed by an informal gathering of our closest friends.

Brian and I had been in a long-distance relationship for almost three years, so we had the additional challenge of planning a wedding from a distance. He from Raleigh, North Carolina, and I am from the interior of British Columbia. Vancouver is where we now live together and it was important for us to have it here. Our dear friend Yvonne volunteered to cook for many days straight to feed everyone at the wedding, making efforts to create authentic North Carolina BBQ dishes (for him) and lots of mushrooms and cheese (for me). We couldn’t decide on one cake, so she baked three! A gluten-free chocolate cake, a layered vanilla cake and a fresh fruit cheesecake. We had many wonderful contributions from friends and family, with personal touches ranging from our handmade wooden ring box to freshly-brewed lavender lemonade.

It was considered inauspicious to perform many of the Chinese wedding traditions so soon after the passing of my mom, including the tea ceremony. When a younger sibling gets hitched before an older one, they are supposed to duck under a pair of their sibling’s pants on their wedding day! That is one thing we did do. And ever since we were young, my older brother had threatened to crash my wedding in a “bear costume.” I was not expecting him to go through with it, but he did. We got the keys to our venue just the day before our wedding and spent the evening there cutting and arranging flower stems and hanging garlands. Everything came together beautifully, and we were able to be relaxed, hang out and eat good food on our wedding day. It was the one sunny Vancouver day that entire week.

From the Bride… I knew Conor and I were going to be married from our very first date, and my bridesmaids have the emails to prove it. And it wasn’t just because he’s a Bell and I’m a Ring. Or because he’s a pilot and I’m a travel agent. Our relationship has been effortless, light and playful, and we wanted our wedding day to have the same feel to it. Working in trip planning, I know that in order for a day to feel effortless, you have to put some forethought into it. We quickly decided to bring Morgan and Melissa of Lustre Events in to pull our easy, breezy day together. Every idea I had, no matter how ridiculous or silly, they managed to bring into reality. I mean, it’s not every day you can find someone who can combine your love of antlers and antiques and make them look delicate and clean.

That’s not to say we didn’t get our hands dirty: we built our own altar, table settings, seating charts, and the herbs were tied with care by a small group of volunteers. We even got our guests in on the act; they participated by bringing the treats for our late night pie bar and were ringing bells and hoisting ribbons for our post-ceremony parade. We rewarded everyone for all their hard work with treats aplenty — games were on hand for cocktail hour, there was a magician on hand for tricks during dinner, and if guests didn’t feel like dancing, marshmallow roasting was the perfect spot to rest weary feet.
But we really have to hand it to all the local vendors, Lustre Events especially, who all went above and beyond to bring together the millions of details we couldn’t pull off ourselves. No one could bring the feeling of fun and play into an invitation like Love Love Me Do. And my seamstress made me feel elegant from my first visit, and if you know me, you know it’s no easy feat. Our photographers captured all the speeches, smiles, kisses and intimate moments without feeling in our faces, and the DJ knew the perfect moment to play our sparkler dance and made our remixed wedding dance on the spot. And the flowers, from the bouquets to the centrepieces, felt natural and light. Did I mention I’m still getting compliments on the food?

Our day completely blew our expectations away, and even with all the planning, there still managed to be a few surprises: Conor managed to sneak in a serenade into our speech that had the entire crowd on its feet, we surprised the crowd with a Barbara Streisand remix wedding dance, and Lustre Events even surprised us with a sweetheart table deserving a magazine spread of it’s own. Conor and I left the day with a million stories and smiles, and it was the perfect way to enter our marriage.
