A gathering of loved ones at your lakeside family cottage has to be one of the very best ways to host a wedding. And sure enough, that’s exactly what these high-school sweeties did. Of course, they made certain Otis – their adorable 2-year-old son – played a major role in the day, and the photos from Rebecca Wood will melt your heart, guaranteed.
From The Bride…Chris and I met back in high school in 1995…..we’ve been together ever since. We have both always had a love for traveling, art, music, fashion, great food…and wanted to incorporate all of our loves into our wedding day. A few years ago we bought our cottage up in Bancroft, and knew right away it would be a magical, intimate place to have our wedding. We held our small, intimate wedding for our closest family and friends on September 7th, 2013, and it turned out to be everything we could have ever imagined and more.
We knew we wanted our wedding day to be casual and fun, we wanted it to feel like we had invited all of our friends and family up to our cottage for the weekend, but we happened to be getting married as well! It was very important the mood we created felt like us. We chose to have our ceremony at 5pm on our dock, with the lake behind us, so lighting was super important. We incorporated candles, paper lanterns and strung lights throughout the surrounding trees. We had our family and friends standing on our sloped property, surrounding the dock as we said our vows. We chose to have Chris’s sister Leanna marry us, which was so intimate, and so personal.. and also made Chris and I feel more at ease. Since Chris and I have been together for so long, and have the most amazing 2 year old son Otis together, it was very important for us to write not only our own vows to each other, but also to Otis. It was just as important that he was a part of the ceremony, as it was a symbol of the unity of our family.
After the short, intimate ceremony we held a casual cocktail reception up on our deck, then Chris and I headed out for a boat ride around the lake to snap some pics, and have a quiet moment together to take it all. It was such a magical moment when we returned, and saw our cottage all lit up from out on the lake, all of our friends and family gather together, having the most amazing time. It will truly be a moment Chris and I will never forget.
We held our reception dinner under a tent, which had 2 long tables that held all of our guests. We wanted it to feel rustic, but not country, casual yet refined. We had a gold, white and peach color scheme that was accented wood and antique pieces. We had the tables done up with beautiful flowers by Alison at Coriander Girl, a quaint flower shop that is at the top of our street in Toronto. She did an amazing job dressing the tables. We wanted everyone to let loose and have fun during dinner, so we placed mickey’s of Sailor Jerry (Chris’s drink of choice) to start the evening off with a toast! We hired The Food Dudes (a Toronto catering company) to create am amazing dining experience for us. Chris and I were blown away by our tasting we had with them, and knew that they HAD to do the food for our wedding. We worked on a menu that suited our late summer cottage wedding, and they executed flawlessly. Their entire team trekked up to Bancroft (3 hours north of the city) portable kitchen and all. Their servers were young, fun, and casual, which suited the vibe we were after. We couldn’t have been happier, as this was our biggest investment for the wedding. My brother Fraser MC’d the evening which had no strict schedule of speeches, we just wanted everyone to feel welcome to raise a toast, or share a memory whenever they felt like it. The environment was loud and fun, full of laughter, tears and amazing memories that were shared by all!
After the dinner we headed up to the deck where we planned on drinking and dancing under the stars until the sun came up! Rebecca Wood, our amazing photographer set up a casual Photo Booth that ended up capturing the best moments of our friends and family that night! We lit sparklers, drank champagne, and danced the night away. Chris even ended up splitting his pants right up the back while twerking at like 3am! It was such a great night, we never wanted it to end! We still look back at the pictures, and it makes us remember it like it was yesterday. We truly couldn’t have asked for a better weekend.
