From the beautiful Bride… Even though my husband and I and the majority of our families live in Chicago, we fell in love with the Santa Barbara area over several vacations there. For a time, we were also debating a European destination for our wedding, specifically, the French Riviera, and traveled there to research. Given the similarities of the areas, I was thrilled to bring a little bit of France to the “American Riviera” when we finally selected Santa Barbara.

In both places you can find a chic ocean paradise not far from rolling hills and wine country. Since our guests were flying all the way out to California, we wanted to give them as much of everything as possible.

Wine is pretty essential to both cultures, so we invited guests to join us on a tasting tour at three of our favorite wineries as a kickoff to the weekend on Thursday.

We also wanted provide our guests with a taste of Saint-Tropez, so we hosted our welcome party on Friday outdoors at the La Pacifica Terrace at the Four Seasons Biltmore, with views of palm trees and the water. We featured themed French cocktails, crepes, seafood and a lively French playlist.

Our wedding ceremony and reception was held at Sunstone Winery with mountain vistas, vineyard backdrops and rosemary and lavender scents in the air. Built with authentic stone and materials shipped from France, the Villa at Sunstone was the perfect way to transport our guests to Provence. We could not have ordered a more beautiful day in a more stunning setting.

Our menu, planned with the brilliant folks at New West Catering, featured a rich duck course, succulent cote de boeuf, a stunning seafood bouillabaisse, a cheese course and, of course, French bread with dipping oils. Planning (and tasting!) the menu was by far our favorite part of the planning!

My husband made one of the biggest contributions to the planning, right at the last minute. The weekend was in full swing and I still had not settled on a first dance song, too entrenched in other details. He stepped in and made the perfect decision: Louis Armstrong’s rendition of La Vie En Rose. It was a great choice for such a sweet moment. We’ve only heard it play once since, on Valentine’s Day at a romantic dinner in New York City. It brought tears to my eyes… proof to him that he made the right choice!

We also wanted to be sure to pay homage to our own families and cultures. We surprised my husband’s family with a hookah lounge outside after dinner and hired an Arabic drummer for our grand entrance. As family traditions, these were really special ways to incorporate their heritage.
And, as a treat for our guests, but especially for me, my mother serenaded us with the Ave Maria during a special moment in our ceremony, something I have been dreaming about for a long time.

We included several things that we were able to take back home with us and keep forever: a Moroccan wedding blanket hung over our bench at dinner now drapes our guest bed; a religious statue used during our ceremony will sit in my mother’s garden; wooden cutting boards for dinner service now get used in our kitchen!

The keepsakes are such a special way to remind us of that incredible weekend, everyday. We were so blessed to have such an amazing setting to begin our lives together, and, somehow, each day since has been even more beautiful!

From Taryn Leach EventsIt was a perfect match: Molly, a beautiful and talented actress meets Joe, a quirky comic-book-loving television writer/producer on a blind date arranged by a mutual friend. The two fell hard and fast as an inseparable team – like artist and muse, the pair was made for each other.

The setting for this storybook wedding was the villa at the Sunstone Winery in Santa Ynez, California, a breathtaking, Tuscan-inspired estate made from reclaimed stone and beams imported from a lavender factory that once stood in a small village in France.

With Molly and Joe’s literary roots at the heart of their love story, we naturally felt it was a great place to look for inspiration for our design concept. Embracing the romantic words of famous poets and playwrights, we adorned the villa with framed love quotes and sayings. Their table numbers were printed on script sheets pulled from some of Molly’s favorite plays. We used antique typewriter keys to indicate each guest’s meal selection on the escort cards, and concluded at the bottom with a simple “xoxo” in typewriter font. Adding a finishing touch to every place setting, we wrapped each of the napkins with a handmade paper flag, imprinted with the words of wisdom of famous authors.

We kicked off the party by welcoming the guests with gold sugar-rimmed champagne for a pre-ceremony social hour. Guests snacked on delicious, hand-pulled mozzarella off a wine barrel bar before heading to the ceremony where Molly and Joe shared their handwritten vows under a chandelier hanging from a 100-year-old oak tree.

To play off the organically rustic nature of the wine country, Molly and Joe decided to keep dinner simple and light-hearted, making their guests feel more at home in the stunningly elegant villa. They dined under the stars on mac and cheese and gourmet hamburgers with family style toppings as they mingled at natural wood trestle-foot tables lined with beaded lace. A vintage airstream trailer served mini cupcakes on antique cake stands as Molly and Joe cut their cake against a custom L.O.V.E. marquee sign backdrop created from reclaimed wood.

Their love story was not completely without drama, however! A warm summer shower arrived out of the blue, gently sprinkling their guests and reception tables before moving along as suddenly as it had arrived, and leaving behind a stunning, surreal, purple-cast sunset. The evening was so enchanting – the guests danced the night away in the beautiful, misty moonlight.

Their wedding was truly unforgettable… or you might say it was “one for the books!

Santa Ynez Winery Elopement

What could be more dreamy than a wine country elopement? This Portland couple escaped to a villa in Santa Ynez to say their “I do’s”, where talents like Alegria By Design, La Tavola and more brought their vision for an elegant gold and blush wedding to life. There’s so much loveliness to see (like adorable “just eloped” signs!) thanks to Anna Jockisch Of Anna J Photography in the full gallery right here.

From Alegria By DesignFor Andrea and Rob, Sunstone Villa was a dream location for their romantic elopement, such in stark contrast from their hometown of Portland, Oregon. They arrived at the villa the day prior to check in to their suite and enjoyed selecting wines for their wedding day at the winery’s tasting room. Andrea envisioned classic elegance with hints of gold and blush pink for her day. We were able to subtly incorporate her color palette without going overboard; “Can’t do too much pink or Rob will think it’s too girly!” our bride advised. The weather, the amazing setting and an adorable couple; we couldn’t have asked for a more beautiful day!

From Alegria By DesignStephanie and Paul contacted us from Calgary, Canada with plans to elope in Santa Barbara. They immediately decided on Sunstone Villa and we started the planning process.

Their adventure began a week before their wedding day with a road trip from Canada down the West Coast, ending in the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley. Stephanie’s only requests were “purple and lace”. Our florist provided a vintage lace tablecloth and we made custom place cards of french baguettes tied together with doilies, twine and olive branches to match the venue.

They were joined by their parents and enjoyed a beautifully catered five course meal in the villa’s courtyard followed by dessert and wine by the fireplace.

Glam Santa Ynez Engagement Session

These two Santa Ynez sweeties are proof that love can found just about anywhere – even in the Trauma Intensive Care Unit, no less. Fast forward five years and countless dates later, and you’ve got an engagement session that’s one for the books. With the help of Team Hair & Makeup and Pat Moyer behind the lens, they captured a whole gallery of memories sure to last a lifetime.

From The Bride…Love can be found anywhere. For us, it was in the hospital. Olu, my fiancé, is a doctor and was called to do a cardiac consult on a patient in the Neurosurgical/Trauma Intensive Care Unit. I was the nurse taking care of the patient right next door to his when we locked eyes. That’s how it all started and here we are 5 years later planning our wedding. Since then, I’ve started my own wedding and event planning company so I can’t wait to work along with friends that I’ve met and developed relationships with along the way.

Olu and I are used to seeing each other in scrubs so getting dressed up for the photo session was a nice change. The location we chose for the shoot was the hills in the Santa Ynez Valley. We fell in love with the beautiful rolling hills and knew our photographer, Pat Moyer, could bring that feeling and romance into life through the photos. Bailey and Marla were my go to girls from Team Hair & Makeup. I really felt confident in their hands and knew they could bring out the glam for the shoot. We had so much fun with this engagement shoot and cannot wait until our wedding day with all our friends and family!
