Don’t you just love a good Art Deco moment? All clean-lined and gilded with deep, gorgeous color for days. We can get on board with that seeing as how gold is probably our most favorite color ever created. Honestly, you should see the sparkling, gold offices of SMP. But back to Art Deco. It’s authentic glamour; a style that feels right at home with a luxe wedding and Locally Grown Weddings is showing you how to get the look. Their team of experts whipped together a gorgeous take on Art Deco Glam held at The Hamilton Ballroom in San Francisco. See the full shoot, including paper goods by Marit Hanson Weddings that will make your heart sing, all right here.
From Aurora of Locally Grown Weddings… What’s not to love about the Art Deco movement of the ’20s and ’30s? Graceful and clean lines, gorgeous details, and lush colors … it’s enough to make a girl swoon. Nestled in the heart of San Francisco is a stunning art deco venue, the Hamilton Ballroom, and the Locally Grown Weddings team planned a styled wedding shoot to highlight the oh-so-classy stylings of the era with a bit of a modern twist. Many of the art deco details were lovingly restored to The Hamilton in the past decade, and our team loved finding ways to incorporate these elements into the look and feel of the shoot. Madeline, who was the mastermind behind the styling, spent time poring over photographs and paintings from the era to bring all the visuals together. An iconic Art Deco painting by Tamara De Lempicka, “Young Lady with Gloves,” provided the color inspiration for the shoot with its rich emerald green jewel tones.
In keeping with the attention to detail that is key to Art Deco, the shoot was all about the little things. Our escort cards were inspired by old bridge playing cards and were reminiscent of couples coming together to play cards as a means of socializing. The guest book was made up of individual paper leaves, evocative of the time, with vintage jewelry layered on gold-accented paper for guests to write their well wishes to the couple. For the centerpieces and bouquets, Madeline wanted the aesthetic to be both modern and traditional. Looking at wedding photographs from the 20’s and 30’s, she found that their flowers would cascade and had a loose, almost wild, appearance. She incorporated ferns to led a touch of greenery, but to also complement the palms scattered throughout the Hamilton Lobby.
Chef Stephanie’s seasonal menu for this winter photo shoot was full of classic pairings, including butternut squash shooters topped with creme fraiche and parsley; baby spinach salad with persimmons, pomegranate seeds, asiago cheese and toasted almonds; and a pan-seared hanger steak with herb-roasted potatoes, blue lake green beans and an arugula pesto and more. Pei-Yee crafted a sweetheart cake inspired by the black and white tiling of the Hamilton’s garden courtyard. Timeless chocolate truffles were given a modern twist into vegan coconut delights rolled in cocoa powder or coconut flakes and a retro classic, the creme filled chocolate snack cake, got an update with a minty cream filling. Aurora worked hard to capture all of the elements that made this shoot really special, from the tiniest of details, to the glamorous fashion, to luscious food photography. As a big fan of photos and films from the era, she worked closely with Madeline to make sure the look and feel of the final images reflected a modern, yet classic and stylish wedding. While mostly using the gorgeous natural light at the Hamilton Ballroom, Aurora loved using her cinematography skills to create a more cinematic and moody look for some of the images. As the event planner, Sadie touched base with our core group then coordinated with our additional vendors to ensure we had everyone on board and ready for “go time!” Sadie also kept the shoot moving so Aurora could capture our gorgeous model in the best light. And what amazing results! We are looking forward to working at the Hamilton Ballroom again this summer.
