Their Classic Spring Wedding Incorporated Korean Tradition

We may be approaching winter in a matter of weeks but this wedding designed by So Happi Together has me dreaming of sunny spring days. It strikes the perfect balance of modern and timeless, with thoughtful nods to the couple’s Korean heritage. “Both our moms wore traditional Korean dresses, called Hanbok, that were color coordinated and held hands while walking down the aisle,” said the bride. Watch it all unfold in the gallery by Esther Sun.

From the Bride…Rewind 5 years from now – Chris and I both sitting at dinner with our mutual friend Tiffany, who’s been wanting to set us up for months. We all thought it will just be another fling. Who would’ve thought after that night, we would date for 4 years, half of which were long distance in different countries, fall in love, and would decide to take that first step to one of the biggest commitments of our lives. We got engaged!

First comes engagement, then comes wedding planning. I knew booking a vendor is the first thing I should check off my list and I knew exactly what I wanted for my wedding. Outdoor greenery, sunlight, garden, someplace captivating yet not too extravagant, someplace grand but cozy. Then I realized my criteria is not the easiest to find especially to find all in one venue…after researching over 100 venues online I was so close to telling myself, I can’t have it all. I need to give up a few of my wants in order to find a venue. Then, we found Kohl Mansion. We visited the venue right away and oh my…everything we want in one place! Beautiful brick walls, an enchanting black and white room, garden filled with roses, the library room, that grand staircase, and so much more than what I envisioned!

Once the venue was set, everything else fell into place. We wanted the wedding to have a soft and romantic feel but balanced with clean and modern lines to be timeless. The color palette that Nancy, our wonderful planner, put together for us was perfect. Different shades of greys, blush, green, muted gold, with grey/black accents. And the outdoor lawn was just so amazing for our ceremony and the cocktail hour after surrounding the fountain. Both of our families are Korean, so it was also important to us to have a part of our culture in our wedding. Both our moms wore custom made traditional Korean dresses, called Hanbok, that were color coordinated, and they held hands while walking down the aisle. That was definitely one of my favorite parts of the wedding.

Now the reception! We loved the overall vibe of intimacy and coziness that was created from such a grand hallway. Candle lights, flowers, the emotional speeches, and all our loved ones altogether just brought out all the feels of that night. So many people reminded us before the wedding to enjoy the day, and oh yes we did. We had so much fun and enjoyed every second of our perfect wedding. It was definitely a lot of hard work and countless stressful days and nights, but it was all worth it. It is a day that we will forever look back on and will always bring the biggest smile to our face.

From The Bride… We chose our venue because it resonated with us both on an intimate and grand level at the same time. The stunning grounds and classical look of the main house gave the space an old-world feeling which we loved but despite its large size, our choice to have our wedding reception in a tent out on the grounds of the property really kept a sense of all of us being together. Even though our venue was in close proximity to San Francisco, it felt like a destination wedding with its majestic views and warm ambience.

We didn’t go into planning our wedding with a specific theme but we both wanted a formal ceremony with a more relaxed, and fun reception. I looked to several wedding websites including Style Me Pretty, Carats & Cake and Instagram but wanted to be sure our wedding felt like our own rather than a copy of something another couple had done. We also had a great time looking at the photos from previous weddings that our photographers had captured!

The most important bit of advice to give other brides is DO NOT go to more than one wedding dress boutique in a day. My mom and I made the mistake of trying to go to THREE in a single day and by the end every dress started to look the same. I had my dress made by a wonderful designer in San Francisco and I am so happy that I did. I was able to build my dress and spent more than just the one day in it!

Reading our vows was incredibly special for the both of us. We had each written our own separately and then read them to each other two nights before the wedding. Promising to be there for one another for the rest of our lives in the presence of our family and friends was incredibly moving and the most intimate moment of our ceremony. We also made the decision to have a “first look” before the ceremony which was a surprise and relief all at the same time! I had to get to the venue several hours before the ceremony and had not seen Will since the rehearsal dinner. While waiting to get ready I felt every emotion I think possible from excited, to nervous, to happy to scared. Once we both were ready, Will and I separately went out to the grounds of our venue. While he waited with his back to me I quietly walked up behind him. As soon as I saw him, I started to cry I was so excited and relieved to see him!

From Rebecca Yale… Michelle and Tianyu were married in an intimate celebration surrounded by their friends and family at Kohl Mansion in San Francisco. The bride and groom met in Los Angeles while she was at school at UCLA and he was her T.A.

They made the wedding incredibly personal by writing their own vows and by incorporating fun facts into their table numbers with information about the two of them as a couple like the number of days since they met (914) and number of cats adopted together (2). The bride mixed berry tones in her bouquet and decor throughout the day and gifted each guest as a party favor a beautiful red Chinese box with delicious Ferrero Rocher inside of them.

The groom surprised the bride with a choreographed dance number with his groomsmen, which he choreographed himself by watching youtube videos and combining them together to make a very special dance just for her.
