From the Bride… This day was the product of incredible generosity and hard work from our family and friends. My mother worked tirelessly on DIY projects for virtually our entire 18-month engagement. She was involved in every meticulous detail, from creating our invitations by hand and sewing tablecloths, to embroidering initials on vintage handkerchiefs for our bridal party and restoring antique furniture for our ceremony and reception. We began by sharing photos of wedding styles that we each loved. Combining ideas, we came up with our own twist, which gave our wedding the exact feel I had hoped for. The affair was what I would call rustic elegance with a lovely color palette of white, cream, and taupe with vintage yellow being the main accent color. Once my fiancé and I chose yellow for our main color, mom combed the discount fabric stores to find the perfect inspiration in a yellow and white damask fabric. It was then that our family home in Orange County was converted into “wedding central,” and when the time came, we rented a large truck and transported every detail 150 miles to San Diego and back.
For our ceremony, we kept the décor simple and natural, letting the stunning surroundings of the tree-lined, ocean-view lawn at Point Loma Nazarene University in San Diego set the tone. Mom restored an antique dresser with a fresh coat of paint and vintage hardware. We draped it with beautiful lace, placed unique glassware on top and filled each vase with a single stem of white mum, dahlia, rose, daisy and hydrangea. The dresser was used for our unity ceremony where we combined sand from three jars. The first jar held sand from Dana Point where I grew up, the second held sand from Santa Cruz where he grew up and the third, a vintage mason jar, held sand from San Diego where we met and fell in love. The mason jar was given to us by my maternal grandmother, who passed away only six weeks before the wedding. Another feature in the ceremony was a small, rustic table covered with a burlap runner which held our communion pieces, including intricately-cut glassware from my great-grandmother’s collection. My musically gifted uncle and cousin serenaded attendees during the ceremony, playing songs by Sting, Coldplay, and Bob Marley on their string base and keyboard. My lovely aunt and her daughter created all of our flower arrangements, bouquets and boutonnieres. I am blessed and beyond grateful to have friends and family (and an amazing day-of coordinator) so willing to share their valuable time, talent and love.
Our wedding day was truly the most special day of my life. The valuable time and hard work that so many people contributed to make it perfect was overwhelming to me, and having the opportunity to express my unconditional love to my husband and him express it back in front of the most important people in our lives was beyond compare. I will always look back on our wedding as the most beautiful representation of who we are as a couple, and an example of how fortunate we are to be loved, not only by each other, but by our incredible family and friends as well. Cheers!
