From the bride… My husband is from originally from Seattle and I am from Los Angeles.  After six years of maintaining a long distance relationship, he finally made his way to Los Angeles. He proposed at LAX, the hub of our travels to see each other. We were able to create a wedding that we had fun creating (I am a graphic designer, and he is an engineer) and was a reflection of us. Our wedding was a combination of vintage finds, DIY projects, and personalized touches. We wanted to have both a Cambodian wedding and an American wedding … in the same day! The Cambodian ceremony took place at my parent’s house in Porter Ranch. Orcutt Ranch is where we had our American wedding ceremony and reception. The location was absolutely perfect because it had the vintage garden sensibility that we wanted, as well the flexibility to hire all own vendors. We also loved that there are several rooms in the house and garden areas on the ranch for our guests to roam about.

Nearly every weekend for the first few months was devoted to scouring flea markets, from Long Beach to Seattle. We bought shabby chic frames off Craigslist and collected old books, vintage luggage cases, turquoise Ball jars and rustic soda crates from flea markets. Some items were new, like our zinc initials, initial cups and wooden colored pencils. There were also many DIY craft nights on our kitchen table. We made our favors out of vintage matchbooks and muslin filled with wildflower seeds. We had wooden “Aimee (hearts) Vantana” and direction signs, which we made ourselves by cutting and painting wooden planks.  I created my own rhinestone sash, using Swaroski crystals sewn on vintage lace, to go with my Ivy and Astor wedding dress.

Every effort was made to have personal touches where we could. I designed all the stationary for the save-the-dates, invitations, programs, menus, place cards, tags, and “love notes.” I kept it to a vintage design with a touch of modern typography. Our major accomplishment was the cake topper, which was created using moss, paper flowers & wooden pieces from a craft store. He chopped, sanded and drilled to create the bodies, while I painted the heads and sewed the clothes. The dress is left-over fabric from my actual wedding dress! We hung pictures in the cake room — it was a unique way we could share memories of us, our family, and friends. My brother Andrew was our wedding officiant, and my husband’s cousin Theary let me wear her Cambodian wedding dress, which fit me like a glove without any alterations! After researching SMP and reading customer reviews, we were lucky to have found our vendors because we were so happy with them. We also couldn’t have done it without the love and generous support of our families and friends who helped make our wedding day seem like a breeze. Our families from both near and far came to celebrate with us. It was a perfect wedding, and I married my best friend and the love of my life.
