There’s nothing quite like a bundle of pretty, pretty inspiration to start the new year off in style, so it’s lucky for us that this darling Sonoma affair by Julie Weisberg Photography is literally overflowing with the pretty inspiration, including a lovely pink and yellow color palette, a plethora or darling DIY details and the sweetest of barn venues.  Even better, the uber-adorable bride and groom infused little pieces of themselves into each and every moment of the day… and from the super cute table numbers to the lavender harvested from their very own garden, the special touches these two lovebirds crafted are guaranteed to make you smile.  And how awesome is that?!?  Click here for more.

From the Bride… Chris and I met over 10 years ago at a BBQ in San Francisco, CA and have been great friends since then.  After getting to know each other slowly over the years, we realized we shared the same passions in life: travel and food.  Over the years we developed a strong bond as we ate our way through many countries: Japan, Fiji, Australia, Cambodia, Thailand, Vietnam, Mexico, France and Italy.  In 2010, we moved to Sydney Australia for a year and a half and began our journey together as life partners.  While in Sydney, we had a beautiful baby daughter Madelyn and decided to have a wedding back home in the Bay area with our closest friends and family.

From the  beginning, we knew we wanted an casual and intimate day, but weren’t clear on the specific theme we wanted.  As luck would have it, we were cleaning out Chris’s childhood items from his parent’s house and came across something that would become the foundation for our wedding.  An assignment from his childhood read: “The world would be better if there were more fireflies” and “When I grown up, I want to be married with children.”  That’s it!  From this piece of paper evolved our vision for our wedding: a cozy, casual, romantic wedding at a barn amidst fireflies.  And in the end, we had just that.

My advice for future brides? You don’t have to buy a lot of new items to make your wedding personal.  Look around your house or better yet in your parent’s garage.  We tied Chris’s childhood red sneakers (also found during cleaning) onto a red wagon used to place name cards. We transformed an old milk crate filled with dust and cob webs into this gorgeous vintage crate used to hold the paper parasols.

Do the things you love!  We both love to garden.  Over the summer, we bought tiny plants and grew them into lush flowers and then used these potted plants as table arrangements. Further, we harvested tons of lavender from our garden (my favorite scent) and incorporated it into the wedding.  We clipped over 300 pieces of lavender onto each menu and made sachets of lavender for our guests.

Get your friends and family involved.  I had small fun bonding parties with tons of girlfriends.  We would sample wine and champagne for the wedding while stamping, clipping and glue gunning wedding items. This made it fun for our guests because they felt like they were part of the wedding!

Choose your favorite meal for your wedding day!  For us, food was one of the most important aspects of the day. We love to eat, and we wanted to eat what we loved on our big day. Don’t go for the traditional fish, steak or chicken option. We wanted the dinner to feel like a southern family style BBQ.  We served an hierloom tomato salad, country fried chicken, grilled steak, mashed potatoes, and jalepeno cornbread.

Used vintage dresses are fun, gorgeous and economical! I found a vintage Priscilla of Boston dress from the 1950s on Preowned Wedding Dresses for $650.  With the money saved here, I was able to spurge on a pair of Jimmy Choos!

Use unique items for Bridesmaid bouquets.  I used purple flowering cabbage for the bridesmaid bouquets.  Each cabbage bunch cost only $5. I tied burlap and yellow checked fabric around each cabbage bunch and viola gorgeous bridesmaid bouquets.

Make your own wedding bouquet.  I had so much fun going to the San Francisco flower mart and choosing the flowers I would use for my special day. If your favorite flower isn’t in season, research other flowers that are similar.  My favorite flower is the peony.  Unfortunately for me, those are out of season in California in August.  I asked around at the flower mart and the next best thing in season is the David Austin rose which looks very close!  I think my bouquet turned out beautifully.

Something for the kids … and the kid in all of us. We have a lot of friends and family with small children and we knew that we wanted to include them all in our day; it just fit our theme.  If you are going to include children at your wedding, make sure they are entertained.  We had hula hoops, a pinanta (in the shape of my favorite food item, a chicken drum stick), croquet, and bocce.  Parents still tell us how wonderful the wedding was for their family.

Share yourself!  We named tables after all of our favorite activities, “Ocean swims, Disneyland, Exploring the world, etc”

Make some things and buy others.  My husband made romantic firefly mason jars (string of 10 battery operated lights + moss in a mason jar) for each dinning table.  I loved my personalized wedding cake topper from etsy.  Wooden figures of bride, groom, our dog Jakey and our daughter.

It’s all about the small touches.  A straw can be something more than a vehicle to transport yummy refreshing liquids into your mouth.  We made personalized paper flags and attached them onto paper stripped straws.  We made menus for each guest and placed them at their dining seat.  We purchased flat cards from Paper Source (brown paper bag style) and printed the food items on each card.  We then attached a checked yellow piece of paper with each guest’s name and sprigs of lavender onto each menu for that personal touch.
