This bride is awesome. I know that for a fact. Because not only have I spent some time emailing with her lovely little self (she’s uber-sweet), but she threw one seriously amazing wedding, as well. A wedding that seamlessly combines vintage chic glamour with traditional elegance, plus a modern twist. From the Bride… I had always dreamed of a small, intimate vintage style wedding but with our Italian and Middle Eastern backgrounds we were destined for a big guest list and a more contemporary venue to accomodate our friends and family. So we decided to style the wedding as vintage as we could without clashing with our reception centre and as a result a more modern, vintage feel emerged… and we loved it!!
We were married at 2pm at St. Columba’s Catholic church in South Perth and the reception was at Frasers State Reception Centre. We had a beautiful string trio playing at the ceremony and we chose songs from (The Beatles- “All You Need is Love,” Henry Mancini- “Moon River,” and David Foster- “Love Theme from St. Elmo’s Fire.”
We had belly dancers to entertain the guests at the start of our reception after we entered and had seated. This was a gesture to my Egyptian heritage and to share something from my culture with our friends and family. It also set a celebratory tone for the rest of the evening and kind of broke the ice for guests to get comfortable and have a good time. Although it was completely off our theme it seemed to fit in so well with the run of the day because of the meaning it had to myself and John and our some of our guests.
Our good friend Philip Webb was our DJ and MC for the evening and had the dance floor packed all night!! Our guests didnt want to leave.
Both of us can be quite traditional about some things and completely left of centre and more modern about others and this came through in all the decisions we made about the wedding. We both love quirky things and I fell in love the handmade and hand drawn elements of my wedding invitations that were personalised especially for our wedding! We even had a personalised drawing of our church for our mass booklets by our amazing stationery girls at Studio Bomba. Our menus were also hand written and doubled as place cards for seating with each guests name printed at the top. These became my inspiration for the rest of our wedding in terms of colours and flowers.
I was drawn to creams and peaches and picked the silks for the girls dresses and had them made by the amazing Hanne Sorenson. Two of my bridesmaid were pregnant and so I had them in matching dresses but different colours and my other bridesmaids I dressed in styles that they would normally wear themselves so they were comfortable. My sister who was also my maid of honour had gold sequins. All the girls had the same HOT shoes that I scored on sale and were apparently the most comfortable shoes ever from Zomp! All of the bridesmaid accessories were from Alannah Hill. The flower girls wore tulle dresses a different shade to the bridesmaids and a gorgeous cream capelet by tutu du monde. The boys all wore matching black Italian wool suits with herringbone shirts and skinny black ties. And John wore an amazing Calibre suit with a matching champagne gold tie to match my antique white feather Aurelio Costarella Capelet. As a gift to John on the day I gifted him some gorgeous Kate Spade cufflinks with left and right inscribed on them.
My dress was made from real vintage spanish lace that was given to me by my grandmother who used to be a wedding dress maker and had her own shop. I wanted a slim fitting style gown and so i had it made by Kevin at Galleria Couture and accesorised with gold accents and wore the most amazing gold Chanel shoes, Chanel earrings and a vintage Oroton glomesh purse I bought from an op shop that was still in its original box.
My flowers and decoration were very much a result of my amazing florist Tali and decorator Leanne. Having seen a wedding set up in the same room where they had mixed chairs styles and table shapes, I decided to come up with my own room plan and I hired clear tiffany chairs, long trestle tables, cream table linen, white chair covers and gave it to the girls who put it together exactly how I imagined. Leanne dressed my gift table witha personalised chalkboard and some very good friends of ours from Wedding and Event Hire loaned us their stunning wishing well ‘Lantern’ which doubled as focal piece on the table and had a little lock to keep everything sfae, and inbuilt light to add a bit of sparkle.
I had asked Tali my florist to put flowers that she though were going to be the best suited to the wedding and so with our bouquets she suprised me and used the most stunning peonies which were subtle but so pretty. The flower girls who are my nieces had brightly coloured pink and yellow bunches which were a great complement to ours so that they werent all ‘matching.’ Tali also put together the most beautiful hanging wooden installation of peach and cream crochet doilies and hung it behind our bridal table and strung some greenery across it. It was the perfect way to tie in the crochet doily and floral centrpieces on each table that were all completely different- no two were alike. There was a mix of gold mirror trays, candles, scattered vases with single blooms and crochet.
Being a massive tea lover I decided to give Wedgewood english tea caddies as the bomboniere and so I had help from the girls and my wonderful mother and mother in law putting them in to clear acrylic cupcake boxes that we lined with pink and white striped paper and filled with Perugina Gianduia chocoloates instead of the typucal Italian tradiotion of sugared almonds. We stickered them with a customised sticker I ordered from Etsy that said Grazie which means thank you in Italian.
I also had customised labels made for the Italian biscuit bags we handed out at the church that my wonderful mother in law and mother handmade and we packed up with the striped paper. The bags and mass booklets were handed out from two wicker baskets that I white washed and tied with tulle that matched the flower girls dresses.
I had a croquembouche and ordered a customised chalkboard cake topper and hand made a garland for the cake table out of the scraps of material from the bridesmaids dresses that Hanne saved for me.
We had photos in the alley of Wolf Lane in Perth city and down King street and enjoyed the day being filmed by Launch Productions and snapped by Karolina and Jodie from Merge.
We had a photo booth set up at our reception and my good friend custom designed props to match my stationery and had them printed as a gift as well as lend me the awesome one she bought for her own wedding from Etsy. I printed a printable chalkboard sign i found from the net and framed it in a white ornate frame from Kmart that Leanne my decorator used to set up the photo booth station
I hand made my own guest book by using a black Kikki K journal scrap book and left over custom stickers and stationery and finished it off with a big tulle bow that matched the ones on the baskets. the journal had black pages and so i Supplied white ink gel pens for guests to write with and to have another ‘chalkboard’ style element in the styling.
We had two brand new champagne gold chryslers – one limo for the bridal party and a sedan for myself and John.
