The first thing that struck me about this wedding was the light and the beautiful, dreamy quality of the images by sunny + scout photography that capture that light so beautifully. And the second? The fact that this Bride and Groom had a wedding that completely reflected their farming lifestyle. Held on the family’s sheep and potato farm (so cool!), this is a dreamy haze of Australian nuptials with so many lovely moments captured on film. From the Bride… It was very important to us to have our wedding day be a true reflection of our farming lifestyle, love of agriculture and all things rustic and natural. A marquee wedding on my family’s sheep and potato farm in Gippsland, called Brindabella, was what I had dreamed of since I was a little girl. Brindabella became the perfect rural setting for our day with it’s giant gums and vistas across dams and potato paddocks. Our ceremony took place in a tiny country chapel in the Narracan valley, just down the road from where I grew up. After the ceremony I had arranged for an ice-cream truck to arrive at the church as a surprise for our guests and ice cream-obsessed Matt! Given the humidity, it was a big hit. We had photos taken at my family’s shearing shed and then at the local sheep saleyards, continuing with our rural theme.
Meanwhile, our guests were entertained at Brindabella by jazz music on the lawn, bocce and croquet, champagne cocktails in personalised bottles and enjoyed canapes while sitting on hay bales. Scattered throughout the cocktails area were wine barrels and some of my great-grandparents’ furniture, which displayed wedding photos of our grandparents, my vintage typewriter for guests to give us ‘words of wisdom’ and a fingerprint tree that we will display in our home. Our escort cards of kraft card with farming illustrations were pegged with twine on an old door. Matt made three light fittings out of rusty old fencing wire to hang in the marquee, as well as a glass jar chandelier made from timber and wire mesh which hung above our dance floor. The guest tables had hessian and lace runners, made by my mum, and various glass jars filled with white peonies, hydrangeas, roses and lambs ear. The menus were printed on kraft card and displayed with sprigs of local herbs.
I designed my dream wedding gown and had it made by a family friend from heavy ivory lace my mum purchased in the Istanbul Grand Bazaar on a trip to Turkey. It had a latte silk lining and waistband with a custom-made gold and pearl brooch. The bridesmaids’ champagne-coloured, 1950s-inspired dresses I also designed and had made by the same dressmaker. I carried my grandmother’s rosary beads around my bouquet as my something old. Having our families play an integral role in our wedding day was also very important to us — we had my four nieces and Matt’s niece and nephew as part of the wedding party, affectionately referred to as “The Golden Delights,” (a variety of potato my family grows). My mum made all the girls’ wheat-coloured skirts, knitted their shrugs and made little Ethan’s waistcoat. Matt’s parents also helped us make over 130 jars of blueberry and vanilla jam using local fruits as gifts for our guests. Everything was handmade, which was just how we wanted it. The day was humid and stormy, with the weather just holding out long enough until our guests were in the marquee. Then it poured rain, with thunder and lightening during the heartfelt speeches. There was not a dry eye in the house.
