I get no greater joy than seeing the smiling faces of the couples we feature day after day. There is nothing better than having the chance to showcase a wedding that is bursting with love and merriment. When I first laid eyes on this country beauty by Murphy Photography my heart filled with glee. Beyond the charming DIY details, which, of course, we adore, there is so much delight between the bride, groom and all their friends and family. From Melanie of Murphy Photography… There’s nothing more Australian than good beer, a country setting, pretty late afternoon light and a relaxed atmosphere – and Will and Kalie combined all of these elements into their dream wedding at Van Dieman Brewing in Evandale, Tasmania — a working farm and brewery — which is also their business. In fact, the aisle Kalie walked down was created from vintage beer bottles tied to wooden stakes with twine with hand-picked flowers put in the tops of the bottles. They were married in the late afternoon light surrounded by family, friends and their little man, 1-year-old Ned, under a huge century-old English oak tree on their beautiful property. They had scattered the ceremony site with hay bales covered in a sorbet yellow cloth, vintage vases, hand-picked flowers, croquet and boules games, and a photo booth. Of course, freshly brewed beer was on hand for wedding guests as they mingled under the oak tree. Many of the details were DIY which had been inspired by wedding blogs that Kalie said she trawled in the lead-up to their big day.
From the bride… It took me a little while to get into the “wedding spirit,” as we had initially planned on a very simple and small overseas wedding. Once we had worked out that actually we wanted to say our vows surrounded by all of our friends and family in a relaxed atmosphere everything started rolling. We decided to get married under a huge old English oak tree on our farm where our business – Van Dieman Brewing – is also located. We loved the symbolism of the oak tree and the fact that we could get married where we one day plan to build our home. I knew from day one that I wanted to create a “room” under the oak tree on the lawn with lots of hay bales. However I didn’t want it to feel like a barndance. We found some nice yellow sorbet-coloured material and that became the colour theme.
One of our more last minute DIY projects was the flowers in beer bottles wrapped in string on wooden droppers that lined the aisles. I couldn’t find anywhere that hired string lighting, so we bought it all ourselves, along with a zillion light globes. It was another thing that I just had to have, and to be honest it really set the night. After the ceremony, we rearranged all of the aisle seating to be in little clusters all around the “room”. We had a range of little wooden coffee tables that were placed with them. For drinks, we didn’t just want the standard beer, wine and soft drink. Of course, we have a brewery, so beer was a given! We had beautiful wine from a fantastic winery just down the road, and we served Pimm’s and lemonade to start with. We had also made a huge batch of non-alcoholic rhubarb champagne ourselves, which went down very well to start with and even better later on when it was mixed with vodka.
