Oh Australia, your weddings just know how to make me weak in the knees. And this Bondi Beach beauty from Kristy Toepfer is the perfect example of why I’ll never tire of weddings from down under. They just epitomize casual elegance – and you can see all the DIY goodness that has me swooning over this fabulous summer fête right here in the full gallery of images.
From Kristy… Darren and Katrina spent a very special ‘Australia Day’ public holiday getting married… It was a typically hot summer afternoon in the gardens of a Historic House venue… Vaucluse House but the heat didn’t slow down the celebration that then kicked on with close family and friends in Sydney’s Bondi Beach.
From the Bride… I could never have asked for a better wedding day. Held at the start of a long summer weekend it was a memorable party for everyone involved. Darren and I had planned the whole thing together, from choosing the venue to spending a number of Sunday crafternoons making chalk boards and wooden signs to give our day some individual love of our own. In an attempt to keep costs down we decorated ourselves; sourcing our wood from old pallets I found at work, our reception ceiling drapes from Spotlight and the lolly table from Candy Warehouse. The planning and preparations where nearly as enjoyable as the wedding day itself, it was so much fun being engaged.
With everything organised the 25th of January 2013 began with a leisurely walk to the coffee store in the main street of Bondi before the girls and I began getting ready. With us safely out of sight and taking over the upstairs of the Bondi Beach House the boys headed for a leisurely surf to pass their morning. I felt so calm and happy until my tears came through when Darren sent up a small box with a personalised poem and a collection of photos of our happiest memories together. After enjoying some champagne and appreciating the sunny weather to calm down we headed to our ceremony that was held on the Lone Pine Lawn in front of Vaucluse House.
The ceremony was lead by Darren’s uncle who is a town crier from England. He put a little bit of quirkiness into our ceremony of which everyone loved. With a small break between the ceremony and canapés before the reception we sent our guests out on a photo scavenger hunt around the grounds of Vaucluse house while we had our bridal party photos. Some creative photos were taken using the props of chalk boards, wooden signs and wood hollow frame that we had placed around the grounds.
Once the reception was underway it was like a sea of chatter, we had mixed up all our guests so they would meet new people at their tables – offering some assistance to get to know each other by having a peg with the name cards so they could wear them. After the meals and some hilarious speeches were completed, it was out to the dance floor with band “The My Tys” who even learnt a favourite of ours- the ‘wine song’ by the Cat Empire so we could dance around in a circle and raise our glasses to the sun.
Leaving the reception via a human tunnel of people and sparklers we headed into Bondi to have the entire Bondi Hotel greet us with cheers and applause by strangers enjoying a drink on a Friday night. My big white dress got even more attention when we decided to call it a night, walking up the main street in Bondi getting a number of congratulatory beeps and cheers.
Although it was a glorious wedding and a very big day Darren and I had made a pact to wake up early and watch the sunrise together the next morning. Our first day of the rest of our lives as a married couple we watched the sunrise over Bondi Beach. A chance to add to our gorgeous memories, before the Australia Day parties began with all our friends and family.
