From Lisa Smith of white+white weddings and events…When I moved to Australia, I was blown away by the ache I sometimes felt at missing Europe. A couple of months before it was on my doorstep and now it took 24 hours and an increase in my credit card limit to get back to a sultry late summer evening eating al fresco in the Sicilian hills. It’s not such a bad exchange however. Australia has so many incredibly beautiful spots that can easily hint at a stunning Italian hideaway. Coorabella in Byron Bay is one such private residence that ticks every box and then some. Steeped in spectacular European decor from it’s Italian/Australian owners, the property radiates an exotic taste of Italy like no other. Religious relics are arranged in front of a stag head mural with a dozen mini disco balls hanging from the living room ceiling, out of place yet in their perfect place too. Antique Italian laces drape over wooden tables made for social dining and red roses sit amongst european porcelain heaving with freshly baked rosemary bread and olive oil dressings. The concept for the shoot was to absorb the elements of this stunning property and create a Sicilian soiree that wouldn’t look out of place in Palermo. With dresses from George Wu and The Babushka Ballerina, the girls wore their hair big and bouncy, just like a young Sophia Loren, courtesy of Julie Corbett. A seductive flick at the eyes and flawless faces from Alex Ouston gave the models a seamless finish. Wil Valor, an Australian based tailor made sure the men were suited and booted as if they had just walked off the Tom Ford Milan catwalk. Beautifully rustic florals from Stem Designs and furniture with clean simple lines from Little Grey Station added an Italian pizazz so delicate, that it didn’t detract from the feast provided by Your Gourmet, which had us all mouthwatering from the very beginning. Captured by the very talented Ale and Kimmi, the food was plated onto beautiful duck egg blue wedgewood plates from Magnolia Interiors with cut crystal glass wear and vintage silver cutlery adding a special touch. The most important aspect is that I wanted to bring the moorish influence so often seen in Europe, especially throughout Italy and Spain, into the concept too. It’s an influence that is dear to my heart with stunning mosaic tiling hinting at an exotic bygone era. It was the mesmerising swimming pool that set the tone perfectly for our soiree setting and as the sun dipped over the lush Byron hinterland, I couldn’t have been any closer to Europe if I had tried.
