Try and try as I might, I just can’t find the right words to describe my complete and total OBSESSION with this darling Gundaroo affair by Thorson Photography. From the Bride… We had such a lucky wedding day. Everything just seemed to fall into place for us, and we had so much fun. Our wedding was held at Grazing at Gundaroo, a restaurant around 30 minutes north of Canberra (our hometown). Grazing is our favourite restaurant — it has beautiful, locally-grown food and wine and a fantastic rustic, down-to-earth feel about it. The idea of a large, elegant wedding didn’t appeal to us, so we tried to avoid fuss and formality as much as we could — we just wanted the day to be intimate and relaxed. We only invited 50 of our closest family and friends and chose not to have a bridal party. We also DIYed as many of the elements as we could, which was so much fun and allowed us to really personalise the day. Our flowers were grown in our garden and sourced through flower markets, and I made the bouquet, buttonholes and all of the table flowers with family and friends helping. Our beautiful table numbers were carved by my father, and my gorgeous hairpiece was made by my husband’s mother. My hobby is baking, and the addition I’m most proud of was the wedding cake, which I made myself in the week before the big day. Our one “something has to go wrong” moment turned out to be that the custom made bird toppers for the cake didn’t arrive until the Monday after the wedding, but oh well.
The ceremony was in a garden out the back of the restaurant, right next to the vegetable patch. We couldn’t have asked for a better setting — after raining for many days (and threatening to do so again all morning), we got sunshine and blue skies. I walked down the aisle to “Dream a Little Dream of Me” by Mama Cass, and just after I took up my position at the front, one of the chickens that roam the gardens ran past as if on cue — it was perfect! Our celebrant Gina did a wonderful job at keeping us both relaxed, and her words reflected our personalities perfectly.
One of the best choices we made was our photographer. When we first saw some of Amanda’s work, we immediately fell in love with her style, and on top of that, our personalities really clicked (pardon the pun). We wanted maximum candid with minimum posing, and she delivered on that perfectly! The most beautiful shots are of us in a nearby field right after the ceremony. My husband’s hobby is music, so Dylan spent many hours creating playlists of our favourite music. The songs were mostly fun oldies with a few modern ones thrown in, and they made for a great atmosphere. Our first dance song was “Happy Together” by the Turtles which then mixed into “You Never Can Tell” by Chuck Berry. Needless to say, that got everybody on the dance floor in seconds! All in all, it was a wonderful day, and we were so happy to be able to share it with our family and friends, who mean so much to us.
