Australia, the land of gorgeous beaches, beautiful views and this gem of a wedding photographed by Stewart Leishman. It’s as bright and happy as they come and the florals by Hello Blossoms only add to the gorgeousness of this affair. Not only is it swirling with a beautiful color palette and a lovely Bride and Groom but there is enough fabulous footwear to melt many a shoe-loving heart. I know I was sold upon first glimpse of those aqua beauties. So get nice and cozy and settle in for all the wonderment this Australia wedding has to offer. From the Bride…Andrew and I met whilst working for the same company almost seven years ago. Whilst we had an instant attraction for one another and a shared a love of travel and adventure, I was reluctant to start a relationship as Andrew had his tickets booked for a two year stint in the UK. He insisted and we dated for four months before he left. The plan was that we would simply break up and keep in touch over the phone. I figured once Andrew got there he would meet other people and forget all about me. We talked on the phone a few times a week and after one particularly tear filled (we missed each other terribly!) conversation I asked him if I could join him in a couple of months and he famously replied: “If you arrived tomorrow, it wouldn’t be soon enough.”
On one of our recent holidays in Thailand we were walking along Phi Phi Island beach one evening admiring the fire twirling and dancing on the beach when Andrew got down on one knee and began to ask me if I would marry him. I was so overwhelmed that my knees buckled as I said yes! Andrew and I agreed that we wanted a relaxed celebration with our closest family and friends and that the important things were great food, music, love and dancing and a great photographer to capture it all. We decided to get married in Sorrento as it was just enough out of Melbourne to make it a destination for our family and friends to make a weekend of it. We also both love the beach and when we found the casual feel of The Baths we knew that it would provide the perfect backdrop for our wedding. Having such a pretty view allowed us to keep things simple.
I always wanted to subtly incorporate my South American heritage and my love of color in the styling. I tried to dismiss some well intentioned friends suggesting that I had to choose a one color theme. I stuck to my guns and decided that I would have lots of color accents but with crisp white backdrop to avoid it looking like a kid’s birthday party! The bridesmaids danced their way down the aisle to “For once in my life” by Stevie Wonder which set the fun, upbeat and light hearted tone of the day. I walked down the aisle to Sarah Mc Lachlan’s rendition of “Blackbird”. During the ceremony my uncle read a beautiful poem by Chilean Poet -Gabriela Mistral ‘Dame la Mano’ in both Spanish and English and Emma the celebrant made everything seem effortless, especially for poor Andrew who was rather nervous on the day.
I am also extremely lucky to have some truly talented friends (Janelle and Samone at CakeInk) who were able to turn my dreams into a reality. They custom designed the stationery suite to match my invitations including thank you tags for the wooden hand fans, ceremony booklet, invitations, etc were totally gorgeous and fun. Our wedding cake was the most amazing cake I have ever seen- no seriously! The sugar flowers were truly a labor of love and matched the flowers in my bouquet perfectly, and it tasted delicious too! The layers were caramel, orange and almond and white chocolate mud. Yummmy! My sister made my cushions, some matched the colors and elements of the stationery, and the others spelled the word “LOVE” in scrabble letters (one of Andrew’s favorite games!). Many of the other details such as the favors and tissue pom poms were made by us. My husband and I spent many evenings in front of the television doing “wedding stuff”.
Stewart our photographer was also fantastic and I found him purely by accident while trawling through various wedding blogs. I loved that very little of his photography is stylized and posed. He has an ability to see beauty in the details which I really appreciate. As we had had the opportunity of doing an engagement shoot with him earlier we felt very at ease on the day of our wedding. For our photos we went to another local beach in the Sorrento area called Shelly Beach and while it was a bit of a trek in my shoes it was worth the effort. We decided to skimp on the details that weren’t so important to us such as my dress and shoes and spend this on things such as the flowers which were absolutely breathtaking. Georgia from Hello Blossoms is a true professional and was able to interpret my fragmented ideas into more than I could have dreamed of. When she pulled out my bouquets I cried with delight! People have asked me since the wedding what was most memorable about that day and I have been telling them that I was surprised by how calm and relaxed I felt that day. I believe that it was simply because I knew I was doing the right thing and marrying the man that I loved.
