From Jessamyn HarrisDaisy Rose (such a wonderful name for a florist!) and I wanted to put together an inspiration shoot that felt styled but unfussy, to celebrate the beauty of Sonoma County in its wild, springtime glory. We agreed on the beautiful painting “Lady of Shalott” as a (very) loose inspiration. The painting is beautiful in that it emanates a verdant, moody romanticism, and the palette is somehow colorful and rich, yet austere. The Lady, dressed in bridal white, floats downstream towards Camelot, which has enchanted her, and while no one could claim the story as a happy one, we loved the wildness of the fairytale scene, and wanted to see what that would turn up when filtered through a more cheery sensibility for a wedding inspiration!

Daisy created beautiful floral headpieces, bouquets, and table arrangements bursting with dreamy colors. The location, on a stunning, expansive property in Sonoma called Sky Farm, was miles from any cell phone reception, and modern life felt very distant as we rambled around creeks, up hills, through meadows of wildflowers, and down dim pathways. Although we kept the palette and dream-like quality of the painting in mind, we made sure it reflected our team’s Sonoma/San Francisco style. So the dresses had a bohemian charm to them, without shouting “bridal!”, and we added touches of sparkling sophisticated sashes and locally made jewelry to fancy it up a bit – plus chickens, dogs, a caravan wagon, a boat, and Sound of Music like hills to keep it grounded. (This is Sonoma, after all!)

The table was styled simply, with painterly light, antique and shining silver, and fruit and a cheese cake. I also used this shoot to test out my new Mamiya 645 AFD film camera, and it felt so great to be back to shooting Fuji color negative film, one of my very first photography loves!
