From the Bride... My parents moved us from New York to London, England when I was 6 years old, but we spent every summer in Little Compton, Rhode Island, where my family has been going for generations, in our house by the sea. Moving around so much when I was growing up, and being a foreigner in another country, always made Little Compton feel like home, a place where I was known and grounded in family roots and a shared history. My backyard, on the sea, was the only place I had ever considered getting married. It was a childhood dream.
I met Marcos on New Years Eve in Cartagena, Colombia, through mutual friends. I told him we should date within 15 minutes of meeting him. When we returned to New York, we discovered we lived within five blocks of each other. He proposed in May after a day filled with surprise adventures to my favorite places in New York, ending in a private screening for two of my favorite movie, The Goonies, at the Crosby Street Hotel.
Little Compton is a decidedly unfussy New England town, and the backdrop of the ocean landscape at our house is so beautiful on its own, we wanted to keep the furniture and flowers natural and organic in feeling. My mom and I both love color, and wanted things that would pop against the blue and green and feel in-season and not too Summery. We chose Harvest hues: cranberry, red, orange and pinks, that picked up the three shades of wine in the bridesmaids dresses and utilized real berries and branches on the tablescapes and in the bridesmaids flowers and floral crowns. My mother has bee hives and makes honey every Fall from her bees, so we designed our own labels for the jars and placed them on the dinner tables as wedding gifts for guests to take with them. Marcos and I have always loved to jump in photos, (our Save the Date was a photo of us jumping off the ‘bluff’ at the local Little Compton beach club) so I carried that theme through the wedding; I had Mr. Boddington’s Studio design a motif of two people jumping for all our paper items, and we had a homemade ‘jumping booth’ that consisted of two trampolines, a camera on a tripod and a nylon backdrop, that guests could take away photo strip mementos from.
We were really lucky to have 75 degree weather in October, so cocktails were served outside on the lawn, where guests could run around, walk down to the ocean, and play games – like the Cornhole set my Dad made himself in his woodshop for the occasion and painted with our initials. I had our floral designer hand-paint wooden signs for the Jumping Booth, cocktail area as well as Bride and Groom signs for the back of our chairs in the reception. One of my favorite things we did was use an old wooden table decorated with live moss, fresh pomegranates and trinkets from my Mother’s house, like an antique birdcage, to place the escort cards on.
